N adie sabe de dónde vino. El saltó hacia nuestro patio una noche fría y obscura. Los ladridos

de nuestros perros nos despertaron. Mi papá cotejó el patio y nos dijo que era un perro de apariencia malvado y asustado. Por la mañana, el misterio se descubrió: el perro era salvaje, estaba sucio, hambriento y algo más, no tenía ojos. Definitivamente, el animal no era muy bonito a la vista. Mi papá le dio algo de comer y como un milagro se convirtió en un ángel. Acordamos amarrarlo y velarlo por algunos días. Pero no funcionó, no había correa que pudiera prevenir que fuera libre. No sabíamos como rompía cada correa, pero sí sabíamos que teníamos que llamarlo Houdini. Decidimos quedarnos con él; así es que lo llevamos al veterinario para un chequeo. El veterinario confirmó que Houdini no tenía ojos y que nunca vería; nos dijo que delineando sus alrededores, él podía vivir una vida casi normal.

Pero, ¿cómo llegó a nosotros aquella noche? Mi Mamá dice que una estatua de San Francisco de Asís que ella tiene en el patio fue la ayuda que Houdini recibió de allá arriba para saltar a nuestras manos protectoras y a nuestros corazones.

Houdini es un perro muy feliz y juguetón. Él vive dentro de mi apartamento. Le fascina jugar con juguetes blanditos que hagan ruido. Ambos hemos sido bendecidos: yo por tener un amigo fiel siempre a mi lado, y Houdini por tenerme a mí para cuidarlo bien.

Houdini fue el Gran Campeon del Sato Show 2010 y obtuvo el primer premio en la categoría Rescatado de la Calle.

n obody knows where he came from. He just jumped into our backyard one cold dark night.

The barks of our dogs awakened everyone. My dad checked the yard and said it was an evil-looking scary dog. In the morning the mystery was uncovered- the dog was wild, dirty, starving and something else- he had no eyes. Definitely the animal was not a pretty

sight. Dad gave him something to eat and magically he became an angel. We agreed to put him on a leash to watch him for some days. But it did not work. No leash could stop him from being free. We couldn’t figure out how he broke each leash, but we knew we had to call him Houdini. We decided to keep him, so we took him to the vet for a check-up. The vet confirmed that Houdini had no eyes and would never see, and he said that by mapping his surroundings he could live an almost normal life.

But how did he get to us that night? Mom says that a statue of St Francis of Assisi she has in the backyard represents the help Houdini received from above … to jump into our protective hands and into our hearts.

Houdini is a very happy and playful dog. He lives inside my apartment. He loves to play with noisy plush toys. We are both blessed: me for having a loyal friend by my side, and Houdini for having me to take good care of him!

l a Real Academia define la palabra humanitario(ria) como; “persona que mira o se

refiere al bien del género humano”. La definición que le da el Webster New World Dictionary , “a person devoted to promoting the wewelfare of humanity”, la traducimos comp; “una persona dedicada a promover el bienestar de la humanidad”. El Webster’s Collegiate tiene como una de sus definiciones ; “having what are considered the best qualities of human beings” en traducción leería; “que posee lo que se considera las mejores cualidades de seres humanos”.

En resumen, si aceptamos estas definiciones entonces una persona humanitaria es aquélla que promueve las mejores cualidades del ser humano para conseguir el bienestar de la humanidad. Alguien podría preguntarse cómo esto se relaciona con el bienestar de los animales. Si hacemos una lista de algunas de las mejores cualidades del ser humano, pondríamos en esa lista: compasión, bondad, honestidad, generosidad, valen-tía, perseverancia, humor, sabiduría, integridad y muchas otras. Es claro, que si desarrollamos estas cualidades tendríamos que ser compasivos con los animales, tratándolos con honestidad y generosidad. También tendríamos la valentía de perseverar en nuestra meta y la sabiduría para ser íntegros en nuestra forma de ver y tratar a todo ser viviente; humanos y no humanos. Y finalmente el sentido de humor nos haría disfrutar de las travesuras de nuestras mascotas y así desarrollar la comprensión que necesitamos para lidiar con asuntos difíciles en nuestra vida.

APAYPA, recientemente ha hecho contacto con una educadora humanitaria que siempre que alguna escuela o grupo lo solicite estará disponible para charlas al respecto. De hecho, nos gustaría preparar y ofrecer un campamento de verano que promueva estas cualidades que tanta falta hacen aquí en Puerto Rico. Veremos a ver si para el verano del 2011 hacemos realidad este proyecto.

W hat does it mean to be humane? The Royal Academy defines the word humane as? " a person concerned

with the good of humans. The definition in Webster's New World Dictionary is "a person devoted to promoting the welfare of humanity." Webster's Collegiate has as one of its definitions "having what are considered the best qualities of human beings."

In summary, if we accept these definitions, then a humani-tarian is a person who promotes the best human qualities for the good of humanity. One might wonder how this is

related to animal welfare. If we make a list of the best human qualities, we would include: compassion, kindness, honesty, generosity, courage, perseverance, humor, wisdom, integrity and many others. Clearly, if we develop these qualities, we would have to be compassionate with animals, treating them with honesty and generosity. We would also have the courage to persevere in our goal and the wisdom to be honest in our treatment of all living beings, human and non-human. And finally a sense of humor would enable us to enjoy the antics of our pets and thus develop the understanding we need

to deal with difficulties in our lives.

APAYPA has recently engaged a humane educator who is available to visit schools and groups that request her services to provide talks and activities on the topic. We would also like to prepare and offer a summer camp that promotes these badly needed qualities in Puerto Rico. We hope we can make this project a reality for the summer of 2011.

Diferenciando entre Crueldad y Cuidado

Distinguishing between cruelty and caring

i found an article on MSNBC* about an animal shelter in Toronto, Canada, that had turned

into a “House of Horrors”. The Toronto Humane Society had boasted of its low euthanasia rate which was 6%. However, this so-called model animal shelter was a place where infections spread unchecked, and animals lived in unhygienic conditions with little food available. The pressure to have a low euthanasia rate was a direct cause of animals suffering and dying without adequate medical attention.

An official of the ASPCA said that there are too many shelters in the U.S., who in their desire to have low euthanasia rates, end up “hoarding animals” or keeping them way too long and not thinking of their “quality of life”.

The responsibility of overseeing animal shelters varies from state to state, but inspections are rare and many times non-existent. Everyone starts out with good intentions and wanting to do the right thing, but they are often overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals they receive.

Here in Puerto Rico many animal protection groups have different policies regarding accepting animals and practicing euthanasia. Some groups do not have shelters but keep animals strictly for adoption. Some have facilities known as sanctuaries and have an open door policy. The overcrowding of animals in these shelters is a serious problem with resulting negative effects. There are still too many animals on the street as well as people who have to give up their pets for different reasons coupled with too few decent facilities available to accept these animals. Some of these end up having so many animals that the conditions are horrific.

At Villa Michelle we receive animals not just from Mayaguez but from other towns that have no shelters. In order to make room for all the animals received and to give these animals a reasonable life, we have to practice euthanasia.

The only way to reduce the number of animals euthanized is for everyone to have their pets sterilized. Villa Michelle offers low rates to perform this operation. We also ask those who would like and are able to have a pet, to please come to Villa Michelle where you will find puppies and dogs, cats and kittens that are waiting for a home. You will be helping us to reduce the euthanasia rate in a most positive way.

encontré un artículo en MSNBC acerca de un albergue de animales en Toronto, Canadá, que

se ha convertido en una “Casa de Horrores”. La Sociedad Humanitaria de Toronto se ha jactado de tener un por ciento de eutanasia bajo de 6%. Sin embargo este albergue de animales modelo era un lugar donde las infecciones corrían sin ser cotejadas y los animales vivían en condiciones poco higiénicas con muy poca comida disponible. La presión de tener un por ciento bajo de eutanasia era la causa del sufrimiento de los animales y la muerte de los mismos sin atención médica adecuada.

Un oficial del ASPCA dice que hay demasiados albergues de animales en EU, que en su deseo de bajar la eutanasia, terminan “almacenando animales o manteniéndolos mucho tiempo y no piensan en su calidad de vida”.

La responsabilidad de supervisar los albergues de animales varía de estado en estado, pero las inspecciones son pocas o muchas veces no existen. Todos empiezan con buenas intenciones y con las mejores intenciones de hacer lo correcto, pero muchas veces se abruman con la cantidad de animales que reciben.

Aquí en Puerto Rico muchos grupos de protección animal tienen diferentes políticas en cuanto a la aceptación de animales y la práctica de eutanasia. Algunos grupos no tienen albergues pero tienen animales estrictamente para la adopción. Algunas facilidades se conocen como santuarios y tienen una política de puertas abiertas. La superpoblación de animales en estos albergues es un problema serio con resultados negativos. Hay todavía muchos animales en las calles como personas que tienen que dejar a sus mascotas por diferentes razones y esto lo agrava el hecho de que hay muy pocas facilidades decentes para aceptar estos animales. Algunas de estas facilidades terminan teniendo muchos animales en condiciones horribles.

En Villa Michelle recibimos animales, no sólo de Mayagüez sino de otros pueblos que no tienen albergues. Para poder acomodar todos los animales que recibimos y poder darle a estos animales una vida razonable, tenemos que practicar la eutanasia.

La única forma de reducir el número de animales para la eutanasia es que todo el mundo esterilice a sus mascotas. Villa Michelle ofrece precios bajos para esta operación. También pedimos a todos los que quieran y estén capacitados para tener una mascota, que por favor vengan a Villa Michelle donde pueden encontrar perros, cachorritos, gatos y gatitos que están esperando y necesitan un hogar. Estarían ayudándonos a reducir la eutanasia en la forma más positiva.

Sato Show 2010 Sato Show 2010

T he Sato Show was held on the 21rst of February in the Parque de Los Próceres. In spite of the rain showers,

171 dogs participated. As always it was an enjoyable family day with music and refreshments. Many dogs were colorfully dressed. The winner was Houdini whose guardian is Ivys Rivera, Houdini is a special dog having been adopted from the street and being blind.

We thank all those who helped in any way to make the day a success. As always we thank the municipal government for letting us use the park and for the big tent that they set up for us.

E l Sato Show 2010 se llevó acabo el domingo 21 de febrero en el Parque de los Próceres. A pesar

de la lluvia, 171 perros participaron. Como siempre fue una tarde familiar muy agradable con música y refrigerios. Muchos de los perros estaban vestidos con mucho color. El ganador fue Houdini cuya guardiana es Ivys Rivera. Houdini es un perro especial adoptado de la calle y ciego.

Agradecemos a lodos los que ayudaron para que ese día fuese un éxito. Como siempre, agradecemos al Gobierno Municipal por el uso del parque y por la carpa grande que instalaron para nuestro uso.

S ome airlines have established restrictions in order to insure that animals are not exposed

to extreme heat or cold. During some months, your airline may not let you transport your pet in the cargo area while others may be more flexible. Pets are not accepted when the current or predicted temperature at either the point of departure or point of arrival is over 840 F (290 C) degrees or over 750 F for dogs and cats with snub noses. Pets are not accepted when the ground temperature is lower than 450 F, unless you have a statement from your veterinarian certifying low temperature acclimation. International airlines usually do not have these restrictions.

We suggest :

• Check with various airlines

• Choose a flight that leaves after dark and arrives early in the morning.

The PuppyQuarantine Room

W e are pleased to inform you that we now have a special room for puppies that have

been vaccinated prior to adoption. The purpose is to keep them separate to make sure that they have not been incubating any of the diseases for which they were vaccinated, and that they are not liable to catch any sickness from the other puppies.

They are to be kept for 20-25 days before being available for adoption. We invite those wanting to adopt a puppy to come and see these cute animals once they are put up for adoption. Of course we will require that they be sterilized. We cannot risk letting them add to the problem of animal overpopulation.

We are grateful to Pegasus Foundation for their help in the construction of this room.

El Cuarto de Cuarentena de los Cachorritos

N os place informarles que ya tenemos un cuarto especial para los cachorritos que se

han vacunado antes de su adopción. El propósito; es tenerlos separados para asegurarnos que no han estado encubando alguna de las enfermedades para las cuales se han vacunado, y además para que no estén propensos a coger una enfermedad de los otros cachorritos.

Se mantendrán allí de 20 a 25 días antes de estar disponibles para la adopción. Invitamos a aquéllos que quieran adoptar un cachorrito, vengan a verlos una vez se pongan en adopción. Por supuesto requerimos que salgan una vez estén esterilizados. No podemos arriesgarnos a que contribuyan con la superpoblación de animales.

Puppy Mill Case Resolved

O n July 3, 2008, at the time when APAYPA was administering the Ponce Shelter, we participated in

a puppy mill intervention where 212 dogs were seized under the existing Law 67 against cruelty to animals. The dogs were distributed among the shelters in Ponce and Mayaguez. Many of them were placed in provisional homes while we were waiting for the court decision. In fact, we still have two Pekinese in Villa Michelle that could not find a temporary home. On March 18, 2010, the case was finally resolved. The owners accepted the guilt. They had to pay a fine and were put on probation for one month. The sentence was not very severe but at least, the dogs in provisional homes are free to be formally adopted by their guardians.

Caso Puppu Mill Resuelto

e l 3 de Julio de 2008, APAYPA administraba el albergue de Ponce, e hicimos una intervención en

un “Puppy Mill” (fábrica de cachorros). Sobre 212 perros fueron incautados por crueldad contra los animales bajo la entonces Ley 67. Estos animalitos se distribuyeron entre el albergue de Ponce y Villa Michelle en Mayagüez. Muchos de ellos fueron puestos en hogares provisionales en lo que se resolvía el asunto. De hecho todavía en Villa Michelle hasta este escrito, quedaban dos perros pequineses que no encontraron hogar provisional y se quedaron en el albergue sin enfermarse. El 18 de marzo del 2010 finalmente se resolvió el caso. Los dueños se declararon culpables. Tuvieron que pagar una multa y cumplir con un mes de probatoria. La sentencia no fue muy severa pero por lo menos ya los perros en hogares provisionales están libres para ser adoptados formalmente por sus guardianes.

W e have a clinic in the shelter, but after more than twenty years of use, we would like a

more spacious and modern one. We have some money set aside for this purpose but we need more. We know times are difficult, but please contribute whatever you can spare. Sterilization is of prime importance in trying to control the animal population. If you make a donation, please indicate that it is for the clinic.

uso nos gustaría tener una más moderna y espaciosa. Tenemos algún dinero guardado para ese fin pero nos hace falta mucho más. e ver since my little Llasa Apso, Anita, died, I had wanted another little dog, although I knew that

no one could ever really replace her. So I was interested when I heard that there were several Shih Tzus at Villa Michelle that had been rescued from a puppy mill. But I had my doubts about Paco. He was not at all sociable. Whenever I went to visit him at Villa Michelle, he would always run to his food. Apparently the only human contact he ever had at the puppy mill was when they brought him his food.

But we brought him home anyway and put him outside on a terrace where he was under a roof, but with access to the yard. Since he had no interest in humans, he seemed to be content there. He really didn’t pay much

attention when we visited him there. But little by little we spent more time with him and one day when we went to visit him, he wagged his tail and danced on his hind legs. We took him out in the front yard and he began to run all over, something he had

never been able to do when he lived in a cage at the puppy mill. After about a month he began to recognize his name and it wasn’t long after that he was no longer content to be by himself on the terrace.

So we brought him to live inside the house. Now he loves people. He has his rug and basket of toys downstairs in the study and he is happiest when someone is there with him. He never tires of playing, and I can never start the day without playing a game of catch with him. He still doesn’t know how to climb stairs. When he is left alone and hears people upstairs, he barks until someone goes to get him. After all of those years spent in a small cage in the puppy mill, we think he deserves to be somewhat spoiled.

D esde que mi Llasa Apso, Anita, murió, he querido tener otro perrito pequeño aunque sabía que

nadie realmente podía reemplazarla. Así es que me interesó saber que en Villa Michelle habían varios Shih Tzus que habían sido rescatados de un “puppy mill”. Pero tuve dudas en cuanto a Paco; no era nada de sociable. Cuando yo lo visitaba en Villa Michelle, siempre corría hacia su comida. Parece que el único contacto humano que él tenía en el “puppy mill” era cuando le traían su comida.

Pero de todas maneras, nos lo traímos para casa y lo pusimos en la terraza con techo y con acceso al patio. Como no tenía interés en los humanos, parecía contento donde estaba. Él no ponía mucha atención cuando lo visitábamos. Cada vez pasábamos más y más tiempo con él y un buen día cuando lo visitamos, movió su rabo y empezó a bailar con sus patas traseras. Lo sacamos al patio del frente y empezó a correr por donde quiera; algo que nunca había podido hacer cuando vivía encerrado en una jaula en el “puppy mill”. Luego de un mes, empezó a reconocer su nombre y no pasó mucho tiempo hasta que ya no se sintiera contento solo en la terraza.

Así es, que lo entramos a vivir dentro de la casa. Ahora le fascina la gente. Él tiene su alfombra y una canasta de juguetes en el estudio del piso de abajo y está feliz cuando alguien está allí con él. Nunca se cansa de jugar y no puedo empezar el día sin jugar a la pelota con él. Todavía no sabe subir escaleras y cuando se queda solo y oye voces arriba, empieza a ladrar hasta que alguien va y lo busca. Después de todos esos años en una jaula en un “puppy mill”, sólo procreando, creemos que se merece que se malcríe un poco.
