Letter to Our Readers

To start, for those who don’t fully recall last month’s celebrations, our staff pho-tographer has captured the images of March’s events in a “memorable” two-

page photo montage of 2013 St. Patrick’s Celebrations. Take a look and see who you might recognize. Next, as Spring emerges and warmer weather allows us to “get out of winter hibernation,” we look to burn off some pent-up energy. What better way than to visit some of our state’s racing venues...both horseracing and motor sports. Take a few minutes to read this month’s main editorial feature NJ Racing Venues. Then, a scrumptious meal is always the right next move. Our writers will intro-duce you to a tavern-style restaurant offering American fare with an international flair. All set in a comfortable, homey atmosphere. Read all about The Pine Tavern located in Old Bridge, NJ. Naturally, you expect us to introduce you to a local musical group for your lis-tening pleasure and an interesting mixologist to satisfy your libation desires. This month, meet Rock Bottom, a versatile local band who prides themselves on being able to play any cover song from the 60s right up to today’s hits. Then, read about a spirited bartender who went from being a Mustang convertible-driving Las Vegas cocktail waitress to a Honda SUV-steering NJ “soccer mom” -- our Mixologist-of-the-Month Anicia Guinto -- who will welcome you to the Colts Neck Inn Steak & Chop House. Then read why the Algonquin Arts Theatre is a must-stop in quaint down-town Manasquan. The balance of this month’s issue will provide you with the timely information you seek to help make your decisions on where to find and when to go to get the most out of your dining and entertainment leisure time. Enjoy.

Visit The Pine Tavern in Old Bridge, and enjoy a dining experience the way it was meant to be.

This tavern-style restaurant exudes a “homey” warmth as you enter it, with its welcoming and gracious staff, its warm paneled walls and wood-en floors ..... all that invite you to sit down, settle in and make yourself comfortable.

Artwork such as old black-and-white photo-graphs and an eye-catching wall mural depicting “Olde Matawan,” will also welcome you to the tavern. The large mural depicts the old Matawan train station, the chapel and library and a horse and carriage, among other images.

The Pine Tavern, which offers American fare with an international flair, has a variety of tempting dishes for lunch and dinner. The busi-ness, owned by Stefano and Concetta Bongiovi, is run by their son Luigi Bongiovi, who serves as General Manager. Stefano, Concetta and Luigi will go out of their way to make your experience at their restaurant a memorable one -- and you will surely want to return regularly.

The Bongiovi family has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the restaurant business, which they have been involved in for 18 years. In addi-tion to The Pine Tavern, which the family has owned for five years, the Bongiovi family also owns and operates City Tavern in Elizabeth.

The interior of The Pine Tavern, which seats 190 patrons, features a separate bar and din-ing room that provide both a special place for a group of friends to hang out and relax and watch their favorite sports games on TV, as well as a perfect place to enjoy an intimate dinner. The restaurant also welcomes children and is “fam-ily-friendly.”

The Pine Tavern offers daily specials. Monday is Steak and Chicken Specials, Tuesday offers Lobster Specials, Wednesday is “Pasta Day” and Thursday offers Chicken Specials.

Start off your meal with an appetizer such as Baked Goat Cheese with endive, julienne pears, dried cranberries, and candied pistachios in a balsamic syrup. Or try one of the house spe-cialties, such as Grilled Octopus, served in a hot

cast-iron plate with crispy delicious toasted gar-lic bread. Buffalo Wings or a Shellfish Combo featuring oysters, jumbo shrimp and crab cakes are also on tap. Try some delicious crispy Da Se-limunte Bread, a flat bread with luscious melted mozzarella and prosciutto, topped with fresh marinated sliced tomatoes.

Pasta dishes are plentiful and include Penne al Vodka, Fettuccini Alfredo and Rigatoni Bolog-nese, among others. Chicken lovers will enjoy Chicken and Shrimp Francaise, egg battered, pan-seared chicken breast with shrimp in a lem-on sauce. Skirt steaks and juicy prime rib are also popular dishes at The Pine Tavern. Lamb chop lovers will enjoy the grilled New Zealand Lamb Chops with sweet, dried cherry Port wine sauce and served with sweet mashed potatoes.

And for burger lovers, there is the Tavern Burg-er, served on an English muffin and plated with

homemade fries topped with any mouthwatering topping of choice.

And make certain to save room for some of The Pine Tavern’s homemade Bread Pudding or Brownies. There is also a melt-in-your-mouth Hazelnut Ice Cream Pie. (The ice cream is homemade!)

Lunches are near legendary at the Pine Tavern. The restaurant offers specials, which include some unbelievable menu choices for under $6. Choose items such as Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad, Cheese Steak Sandwich, a Breakfast Bur-rito, Chicken Caesar Wrap or the Tavern Burger.

Although this restaurant is “family-friendly” it also welcomes sports fans who can fit comfort-ably and enjoy a variety of games on the TVs in the bar. It also hosts live bands on Saturday nights. Enjoy Happy Hour Monday through Friday from 3:00 to 6:00 pm, when half-price drinks are the order of the day. And on Sunday, patrons can enjoy half-priced drinks all day long. Ladies, visit The Pine Tavern on Friday and Saturday nights and enjoy half-price drinks after 9:00 pm.

One of the standouts at the Pine Tavern is its staff, who consistently receive rave reviews for their unflappably cheery service. “I try to hire people with good personalities, and who are very friendly,” says the equally gracious Bongiovi, adding, “I hire people like myself.”

For example, he points out, Claudia, the popular Pine Tavern Manager, is “an extremely friendly, beautiful person and she works very hard for us.”

That’s what makes this popular restaurant work -- its ownership, which leads the wait staff, and its respect for its customers. Add in delicious, hearty and satisfying freshly prepared meals, a lively and welcoming atmosphere, Happy Hour and live weekend music, and you have the recipe for a memorable experience.

R ock Bottom is a versatile band that prides itself on being able to cover any hit song from the 1960s

until today. The Beatles, Journey, Styx and numerous Motown hit acts are just a small sample of all the bands that receive attention from this group that has been rocking together since 2008. “We have a huge repertoire of songs, we have hundreds of tunes that we can bang out,” said drummer Tony Bisulca.

They are able to play so many different songs because each band member has his and her own skill set they bring to the mix. And the band loves to mix it up, playing often in the Toms River area and Monmouth County.

Al Smith is the lead singer and the one who gives Rock Bottom that rare front man energy that keeps the crowd entertained. “He’s very good with the people. He deals with them and they love seeing him,” said Bisulca, adding that the vocalist is a happy-go-lucky guy with a powerful voice, great qualities for the front man of a band that strives to make every song as lively and danceable as possible.

Marc Coccio is one of the guitar players, but can also cover a lot on the keyboard when the occasion calls for it. His ability to play the synthesizer is a big reason why Rock Bottom is able to play a variety of music other bands don’t, namely the electronic rock from the 70s and 80s. Smith, Coccio and Bisulca are the original members with guitarist Pete Weber, singer Alicia Ellis and bass player Charlie Kovacs being added more recently.

Weber is the musical coordinator, handling the multi-part harmonies and melodies to ensure that every second of their shows are live with no reliance on any backing tracks or sequences. Bisulca calls the harmonies the best thing about Rock Bottom.

Ellis can cover a wide array of vocal styles from different eras. From the classic big voices of Aretha Franklin and Patti Labelle to the harder, growling rock of Led Zeppelin

and Pink, she has a large range that she’s proud of.

Bisulca was inspired by the big rock groups of the 60s and 70s, especially Led Zeppelin and Bad Company, but also has a solid background in jazz. He has a direct connection to some of the top talents from decades ago including legendary jazz drummer Joe Morello and pianist and composer Dave Brubeck. He worked and

studied with both musicians, experiences that have helped make Rock Bottom’s overall collection of songs even more extensive.

“As long as it’s a danceable tune, they all love it,” said Bisulca about which of Rock Bottom’s songs are the most popular. They get constant requests to perform “Mustang Sally” by Mack Rice along with multiple Motown and Zeppelin songs. Grand Funk Railroad’s “I’m Your Captain,” Golden Earring’s “Radar Love” and AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell” are the band’s favorite songs to play, but they can cover a lot more than that including current hits like Pink’s “Raise Your Glass,” and Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out of Heaven,” which are well within their range.

Rock Bottom can be found at its home base at Mulligan’s Grill in Toms River; the band also plays at The Cabin in Freehold and was on rotation at The Coastal Dive in Sea Bright before Hurricane Sandy. Once the cleanup and rebuild are completed the band will be back in that area again.

Bum Rogers Tavern & Crab House in Seaside is one place that stands out to Bisulca as always exciting to play. “Every time we’d play a party there or a gig there, people would go nuts,” he said. “They wouldn’t let us leave the place; they kept going on, throwing money at us like ‘Keep playing!’”

The long winter tends to coop many of us up. It’s not that easy to move around when one is swaddled in layers of clothes to ward off the biting chill. But as spring approaches and the weather gets warmer -- spring fever hits. And when spring fever consumes us, we don’t want to just

walk outside -- we want to run out of our human caves, because that first burst of energy is real and requires excitement to burn it off in a memorable way.

Enjoying racing events -- cars, motorcycles and horses -- is something that fits that energy bill.

And...They’re Off!There is something truly magical watching horses run -- either with a pilot on top (thoroughbred racing) or in a harness behind (standard bred or harness

racing). The speed and grace in both are majestic.

Thoroughbred racing began at the Jersey Shore on Independence Day, 1870, in Monmouth Park. The day was deemed successful and that track grew to offer the highest purses of any other in the

country. The track thus received a resplendent makeover in 1890 to reflect its status. But after only one year of operation, state legislation against gambling forced the meetings to relocate to New York and forced the track to close in 1893. Monmouth Park was, regrettably, put up for auction in 1897, and horse racing would lie dormant in the Garden State until 1939, thanks to the efforts of Amory Haskell of Red Bank, who spearheaded the legalization of pari-mutuel wagering in NJ, and led the efforts to rebuild Monmouth Park, which opened anew in 1946. If his name is familiar, it’s because the famed Haskell Invitational race, the shining star of racing at the park (and nearly as famous as the Triple Crown races) was named in homage to his successful efforts. The present-day Haskell Invitational, for three-year-old thoroughbreds, has been a calendar staple since 1968, according to Monmouth Park. The track also hosts the Monmouth Stakes, which began in 2008; this popular race is for horses three and older, and features a $200,000

purse.

Monmouth Park (monmouthpark.com) kicks off its live racing this year on Saturday, May 11. The racing occurs on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with added holiday racing on May 27 (Monday) July 4th (Thursday) and September 2 (Monday). But Monmouth

Park is so much more than the awesome rush of graceful live

horse racing; this venue is distinguished as a full family-fun event host with numerous activities to enjoy. On top of special events, every Sunday and holiday (noon to 4:00 pm) are family-fun days for the little ones, who will love the pony rides, face painters, clowns, bounce house and live music. A day at the races is only $3 per person, grandstand admission, and children 12 and under get in for free.

Up north, at the Meadowlands Racetrack (meadowlandsracetrack.com), equine racing enthusiasts can enjoy both harness racing and thoroughbred racing. It opened on September 1, 1976 with an exciting harness race held on September 6. And with the exception of its inaugural year, Meadowlands’ live racing card is dedicated to thoroughbreds in autumn and harness racing the remainder of the year.

This track is distinguished by its night-time racing, and it is home for the Hambletonian, the famous second race of the Trotting Triple Crown, since 1981. The Hambletonian first took place at the New York State Fair in Syracuse, NY in 1926; it had several homes before settling in New Jersey.

A trotters/pacers-only track is the famed Freehold Raceway (freeholdraceway.com), established in 1853.

The racetrack is also open seven days a week and seven nights for year round thoroughbred and harness racing simulcasts from tracks throughout North America. Live racing is held starting in late August and through mid-May (Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and on certain holidays).

I t isn’t just horses that can rev up the racing excitement in New Jersey; we have several outstanding auto racing venues for those who prefer their tracks featuring mechanized contenders.

Raceway Park (Englishtown; etownraceway.com): A full slate of appealing auto-related events is on tap for the 2013 season at this huge 320-acre complex. The 44th annual Toyota NHRA Summernationals (back to its original name) will take place on May 30, 31 and June 1, 2.Sportsman racers launch their quest for the 2013 Sunoco points series champion crown on Sunday, April 7 on the quarter mile. Drag racing on the quarter- and eight-mile tracks is underway, as is motorcycle racing on the motocross semi-pro dirt track and the motocross practice track. Also exciting is the Exotic Driving Experience (EDE), which will take place April 12-14; this event features supercars from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Porsche, Audi and Nissan GTR. This summer, the family fun series continues, highlighted by the 38th annual P.C. Richard & Son Night of Thrills (Wed., July 17th). Other delights include monster trucks, fuel funny cars, outlaw pro mods and more.

Wall Speedway (Wall; wallspeedwayracing.com): After nearly closing a few years ago, Wall Speedway is back … and better than ever. Its Grand Opening is set for Saturday, April 27th, fans are welcome to enjoy the on-track party at 5:00 pm, to meet the drivers and get an up-close view of their cars. All divisions will be taking the track, including its exciting

new 4-Cylinder division. The schedule is packed with numerous family-friendly events such as: Wall Speedway’s first demolition derby, May 5th; Little League Night, June 7; Father’s Day Special, June 15; Garden State Classic, June 29; Route 34 Day, July 13; First Responders’ Night, August 10; and NASCAR Night, August

24. Grandstands open every Saturday at 5:00 pm and qualifying starts at 6:00 pm; events begin most Sundays at 1:00 pm. Wall Speedway is also available for parties and fundraisers.

New Egypt Speedway (New Egypt;

newegyptspeedway.net): According to its press release, this venue’s 2013 racing schedule highlights the switch to the 358 Small Block Modifieds. New Egypt’s new headline division will be joined again on the schedule by the Sportsman, Street Stock, Fastrak Crate Sportsman, Fastrak Late Model, and the TSRS 305 Racesaver Sprint divisions on alternating weekends. Along with themed nights and fan giveaways, there are several special races planned. Opening Day is Saturday, April 6. Saturday, May 18 will mark the inaugural NASCAR Night. On Tuesday, May 21, the World of Outlaw Sprints is scheduled for the first time since 2007. Also is the Super Dirt Car Series. Also, New Egypt Speedway has partnered with The Wounded Warrior Project for 2013 -- the Military Heroes 30, on Saturday, July 6, features URC Sprints, 358 Modifieds and Modified Match races. Saturday, August 24 is Big Brother/Big Sister Night sponsored by the Rockin’ Country Thunder106 radio station. Many more events are scheduled.

New Jersey Motorsports Park (Millville, njmp.com): This venue, perhaps the largest auto and motorcycle racing venue in the state, is located on 500 acres adjacent to the Millville Airport. It’s home to the ARCA Racing Series powered by Menards, an American stock car series, considered a minor, but professional, league of stock car racing, perhaps two steps down from the top-level NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and one step down from its minor league, the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Numerous events are scheduled for 2013, including the 5th annual NJMP GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing “Devil’s Showdown” (also with battle of the bands and bikini contest); the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association August 2 -4; and many more.

Other smaller auto racetracks (outside our area) are :Island Dragway (Great Meadows, NJ), Bridgeport Speedway, and Atco Dragway. No matter if it’s hoof beats or tires, New Jersey has amazing races for everyone.

Anicia GuintoColts Neck InnBY CLARE MARIE CELANO

Anicia Guinto went from a Mustang convertible-driving Las Vegas cocktail waitress to a Honda SUV-driving New Jersey soccer mom and has loved every bit of her journey.

Guinto has tended bar at the Colts Neck Inn for four years, since she moved to New Jersey from Las Vegas to be with her fiancé, Bobby, whom she met in Las Vegas, but who lives in New Jersey.

Guinto, who was born in the Philippines, says that growing up, she always wanted to work as a flight stewardess so she could travel the world and also, come to America. “My brother had already moved to the states

and we all wanted to come here to have a better life,” she says.

Guinto came to California by herself at 18, in the early 1990s and then moved to Las Vegas securing a job at the Las Vegas Hilton where she worked for 11 years. “It was like a different world for me out there,” she relates. “It’s totally different than anywhere else in the world. Businesses never shut down. And there are lights everywhere. It never gets dark there. The whole lifestyle is different. I loved everything about Las Vegas.”

She migrated from the Las Vegas Hilton to become a cocktail waitress at Treasure Island,

a job that required her to “be completely put together” before she went out on the floor. “Everything had to be just right, from hair to makeup to my outfit to my nail polish, even my earrings,” she laughs.

Along the way she got married and had a daughter who is now 17. The marriage did not work out and Guinto had to work as a single parent. “I was one-half cocktail waitress and party girl, and one-half mom,” she recalls.

Currently, the popular bartender lives with her fiancé who has two teen daughters.“Now I have also become a soccer mom,” she says with amusement.

“I love my job,” Guinto emphasizes. “At the Colts Neck Inn, we get a lot of regulars. You learn about them, they learn about you, and you slowly become a part of each other’s daily lives.”

Behind the FootlightsThe Algonquin Arts Theatre is a non-profit located in the picturesquely quaint town of Manasquan on the Jersey Shore right on Main Street. It was founded in 1992 as a venue to, “provide cultural enrichment for residents of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.” It is known for its vast array of shows, concerts, plays and ballets. More important, they provide a home to countless new and young performers making their premiere stage appearances.

Until 1992 the Algonquin wasn’t much more than an abandoned movie theater. That’s when Jack and Fran Drew came into the picture. According to David Applegate, executive director, they bought the theater with a vision of creating a cultural and -- here’s the key word -- educational experience for the Jersey Shore. Creating more than a theater, it became a multi-use cultural center as well as housing the

adjacent performing arts center.

The purchase of the theater seems to have been something of a cross between a historic and artistic “passion project” and a real estate investment. Combining both a historic storefront and an apartment building represented a vision that they were able to bring to fruition. The whole story of how this theater got from then to now is something of a fairytale when one considers our relationship with banks post 2007.

In 1996, OceanFirst Foundation was conceived as the nation’s first community, charitable foundation as part of the initial public stock offering of OceanFirst Bank. Their goal was to help raise a total of $2.5 million to aid in the transfer of ownership from the Drews to the Algonquin Arts Nonprofit Corporation. As of 2009 the goal had been reached and the nonprofit is now the owner.

From its website it is stated that the Algonquin’s mission is “to provide cultural enrichment and arts education for the Jersey Shore through high quality performances and programs.” Applegate states that the theater’s tagline is “Performing Arts, Education, Film.” The performing arts is clearly the most visible part of its mantra. With such varied shows as, “Spamalot,” “Tuesday With Morrie,” and “Oliver,” it is in the forefront in local production value. Quite often the Algonquin will bring in professional actors and directors, for example, Sally Struthers was recently featured in the critically acclaimed “Always Patsy Cline.”The film part is tied to the historic beginnings as a movie theater. First-run films are not the norm though. Besides the showings of classics, like “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” it also presents Reel History Film Series and Kidz Films.

By visiting the Algonquin website -- algonquinarts.org -- notably, the “Page and Stage” under the “education tab,” you can easily get an idea of just how involved it is in the entire educational process. While many non profits may pay lip service to education (let’s face it, many FOR profits do the same), this group goes above and beyond. Beginning with children as young as three years old, the Algonquin Arts Theatre is constantly working towards inspiring young people to get involved with the arts. With our public schools continuously cutting, generally beginning with the arts, the service that Algonquin provides locally is truly incalculable. Also offered is a Teen Night. This Friday night program offers free improv classes, giving teens and pre-teens a forum to discuss the social issues that affect them directly. There is always something fascinating occurring at Algonquin Arts Theatre, for people of all ages and art and music fans of all styles. This could very well be one of the hardest-working theatres in show business!

A Review

A new play about Ann Richards is funny and tedious, simplistic and tender.

For anyone playing that old game in which you pick a historical figure to share a meal with, former Texas governor Ann Richards has to be an attractive candidate. Famously feisty and richly quotable, Richards remained an entertaining and beloved figure right up to her death in 2006.

But a great dinner companion is not necessarily an ideal subject for a nearly two-hour play. It’s not belittling Richards’ considerable accomplishments to observe that she was most appreciated for her inspiring back story and outsize personality; and in Holland Taylor’s Ann at Broadway’s Vivian Beaumont Theatre, those qualities -- particularly the latter -- are stretched pretty thin.

Taylor, a stage and screen actress best known for her work in television -- most recently on Two and Half Men -- both wrote and stars in Ann, essentially a one-woman play. (Julie White’s voice is heard as that of Richards’ beleaguered secretary, but she never appears onstage.) It would be a tall order even for an experienced playwright, and Holland has, to her credit, crafted a deeply affectionate, often clever tribute that provides more than a few laughs.

But the comedy can become tedious, especially after the setting shifts back from a Texas

college auditorium where Richards is addressing a graduating class to the office where she spent her one term as governor (before losing the 1994 election to George W. Bush). For a good chunk of the show, we watch as she fields an endless array of phone calls from staff, other political figures (among them then-president Bill Clinton) and her four grown children.

In these conversations -- of which we hear only one side, but can frequently imagine the other -- Taylor’s Richards is alternately cantankerous and charming, earnest and profane. We are relentlessly reminded, in discussions that veer from the plight of a death-row in-mate to the question of who’s cooking the turkey for an upcoming family retreat, that this is a woman with a mind, tongue and temper as sharp as tacks, and a heart as big as the state she represents.

Richards is treated, in other words, much like a sitcom character. Her notable achievements are eluded to -- revitalizing the local economy, reforming the prison system, championing civil and reproductive rights -- but in ways that are both simplistic and pedantic. There’s also something slightly patronizing about all the “y’all”s and “yegods” with which Taylor -- litters her speech.

Ann is most affecting when Taylor focuses on Richards’ personal challenges and joys, from her battles with alcoholism and cancer to her relationship with the adored father who pro-vided her formidable confidence. “Daddy, you were right, I was smart,” she cheers at the end. “And I could do anything I wanted to!”

PARTNERINGClose cooperation between parties

having shared rights and responsibilities; a common enterprise.

In our day-to-day lives, whether personal or business related, we all have reasons to “partner” or work together with others

toward a common purpose or goal. Reaching this goal or completing this task often requires compromise and flexibility

on both sides.

Whether in a personal relationship (marriage) or a business transaction (working with a vendor or contractor), each party must complete his/her responsibilities, while keeping in mind the rights of the other party. If this cooperation is kept “top of

mind” the outcome will usually result in success.

In the hospitality industry particularly, there is a “partnering” between the venue owner and his/her staff. Each party

has responsibilities to be carried out, as well as rights to be recognized and addressed.

Likewise, the proprietor and staff of an establishment have an unwritten partnership with their customers. The former have

the responsibility to provide product and service mutually agreed upon, while the latter is expected to respect the rights of the owner and staff as well as to provide fair compensation

for the services delivered.

Cooperation, compromise and flexibility between all partnering parties will usually lead to better understanding,

The Last Word. Responsibility Behind The Bar

Venues NJ is proud to support an effort on behalf of Prevention

First and the Prevention First Coalition of Monmouth County,

which is offering a FREE training seminar to bartenders and bar

managers about responsibility behind the bar. We’ve all enjoyed

conviviality with friends or dates in a bar establishment only to

have our merriment curtailed swiftly by an “over-served” or under-

age individual.

This free training for Monmouth County businesses with liquor

licenses will occur on Monday, April 15, from 4:00 - 6:00pm in

the Encore Events Center at iPlay America, 110 Schanck Road in

Freehold. The event includes free dinner and giveaways.

Bartenders, bar owners and managers will gain

expert knowledge through presentations from

the New Jersey Department of Motor Vehicles

(DMV) and the Division of Alcoholic Beverage

Control (ABC). According to event organizers,

this training will assist servers and vendors in

preventing illegal sales of alcohol to underage

youth. Attendees can expect to learn more

about staying on top of the latest trends in false identifications,

developing innovative strategies to prevent selling alcohol

to underage customers, understanding the legal and social

consequences of serving underage youth, and helping to protect

your community and becoming a part of the Hero Campaign.
