Versatile imager modes

We built the VENICE camera around a Full-Frame sensor with the classic 36 x 24mm dimensions that have been a staple of photography for over 100 years. Sony’s choice of imager modes enables you to take full advantage both for spherical and anamorphic projects. VENICE is also fully capable of supporting

your S35mm glass in all the traditional aspect ratios.

VENICE: Sony’s next generation motion picture camera

Developed in close collaboration with leading cinematographers, Sony’s VENICE motion picture camera is a major advance. DPs have hailed its innovative color science, with natural skin tone rendition right out of the box. The Full-Frame sensor enables an extraordinary range of imager modes including large format and S35mm, spherical and anamorphic (anamorphic and Full-Frame modes require licenses, sold separately). And operators have praised such chassis innovations as the dual left/right control panels, form factor and build quality.

Based on ongoing discussions with filmmakers, VENICE is gaining significant new capabilities through firmware upgrades.

Sturdy E-mount with professional lever lock

With the initial release, VENICE supported PL mount lenses, including spherical and anamorphic, Super35mm and Full-Frame. The mount includes data pins for Cooke® /i technology, to record frame-by-frame metadata with compatible lenses.

Version 2.0 introduces E-mount lens support. Not only does this accommodate the growing ecosystem of E-mount lenses, but it also accepts a world of third-party SLR and rangefinder lenses through third-party adaptors, sold separately. Simply remove six hex screws to instantly detach the PL mount, revealing the native E-mount. For added security with large lenses, the camera incorporates Sony’s professional lever lock E-mount system. The VENICE camera can control E-mount lens iris via assignable button, however Auto Focus and Auto Iris are not available.

Apple® ProRes recording

VENICE supports a broad range of genres, projects and workflows. For productions committed to Apple ProRes

recording, Version 2.0 introduces Apple ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 422 and ProRes 422 Proxy recording in Full HD.

Select FPS

The Select FPS function lets you choose frame rates from 1 frame per second to as high as 60 fps, depending on imager mode. Firmware Version 2.0 supports Select FPS for all the available imager modes, while Version 3.0 enables Select FPS for the two additional imager modes noted in the firmware timeline.

Dual Base ISO / High ISO 2500

While VENICE has a native sensitivity of ISO 500, Version 2.0 adds a second base sensitivity: High Base ISO 2500. Taking advantage of the Full-Frame sensor’s unique characteristics, High Base ISO 2500 excels in low-light High Dynamic Range capture, with an exposure latitude from 6 stops over to 9 stops under 18% Middle Gray, for a total of 15 stops. High Base ISO 2500 is ideal whenever you’re using slow lenses or shooting dimly lit environments, such as exterior night, or indoors where lighting may be limited. For greater flexibility, VENICE incorporates an internal eight-step Optical ND filter system. Combining High Base ISO2500 with the various ND’s offers tremendous flexibility with the ability to emulate different ISO’s while maintaining maximum latitude of +6 and -9 stops, enabling you to use VENICE as an ISO1250 camera.

Surround View (Look Around)

Camera operators always appreciate a warning when mic booms, C-stands or other distractions threaten to enter the frame. That’s why Sony has implemented Surround View mode. While the camera records only the active area, the viewfinder and on-set monitors can display a 5% margin around it. Surround View supports three imager modes: 3.8K 16:9, 4K 17:9 and 4K 4:3. The function operates on the VF, SDI 3/4 and HD Monitor outputs. Surround View changes the maximum available frame rates. In normal 4K 17:9 mode, maximum frame rates are Project up to 59.94p, Variable up to 60FPS. In Surround View, these become Project up to 29.97p, Variable up to 48FPS.

High Resolution Magnification

High resolution content requires highly precise focus. To accommodate, Sony provides Dot-by-Dot magnification of the viewfinder image. At 4.0x magnification, you have a high precision view for focus accuracy.

In digital image capture, the viewfinder doesn’t always tell you what’s happening in the extreme highlights and shadows. Sony solves this issue with High/Low Key, a powerful tool for ideal exposure. This assignable button function makes it easy to check highlights and shadows both in the viewfinder and over the HD Monitor Output. To check highlight latitude, High Key reduces exposure to 64 EI (Base ISO 500) and 320 EI (Base ISO 2500). To check shadow detail, the camera doubles the exposure index. The assign button cycles from Normal exposure - > High Key -> Low Key -> Normal (off).

Wired LAN Control

You can control one or more VENICE cameras on a PC or Mac® OS computer with a web browser. For direct control of a single camera, connect an Ethernet cable from the camera to the computer. For control of multiple cameras, connect the cameras and the computer to a common Ethernet router.

In Version 2.0, you can control Record Start/Stop, Assignable Buttons and five major items: Frames per Second, Exposure Index, Shutter, ND Filter and White Balance. In Version 3.0, wired LAN control will support all menu settings. 192.168.0.1
