UNDERSTANDING INSTRUCTOR QUALIFICATIONS AND THE APPROVAL PROCESS

FIRST THINGS FIRST: OVERVIEW OF THE INSTRUCTOR APPROVAL PROCESS

The instructor approval process is not a one-time requirement that will cover all instruction activities of an approved instructor applicant; rather, it is a recurring process that requires the submission of an instructor approval application and the application processing fee for each course that the applicant will instruct.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR INSTRUCTOR APPROVAL: TWO AREAS OF QUALIFICATION

To qualify as an approved instructor, applicants must meet at least one qualification in each of the following categories:

CATEGORY 1: KNOWLEDGE OF COURSE TOPIC

• A professionally recognized real estate designation• Bachelor’s degree plus as least three (3) years full time experience• Six (6) years full time experience in a profession, trade, or occupation

Example 1:

If the course title is Home Inspections, the applicant must meet at least one of the qualifications listed:

Knowledge:

• A professionally recognized real estate designation in Home Inspections• Bachelor degree plus as least three (3) years full time experience in Home Inspections• Six (6) year full time experience in a profession, trade or occupation in Home

Inspections

Example 2:

If the course title is Real Estate Finance, the applicant must meet at least one of the qualifications listed:

Example 3:

If the course title is The Closing Process, the applicant must meet at least one of the qualifications listed:

Knowledge: • A professionally recognized real estate designation in The Closing Process• Bachelor degree plus as least three (3) years full time experience in The Closing Process• Six (6) year full time experience in a profession, trade or occupation in The Closing

Process

CATEGORY 2: EXPERIENCE

• At least 25 hours of teaching experience (Important - Only formal classroominstructional settings in real estate and related fields will apply. Programs that do notqualify as teaching experience include online courses, committee reports, paneldiscussions, forums, meetings, planning, training, or task group settings.)

• Credentialed instructor of real estate courses who is or has been engaged in the practiceof teaching

• Professional designation such as a designated real estate instructor• Approved to teach by the governing body of a college or university• Professionally recognized instructor development workshop of at least four (4) hours

within the previous 12 months

BE AWARE – It shall be the responsibility of the vendor to determine the qualifications of each applicant based on teaching experience and knowledge of subject matter per course topic.

Vendors are cautioned that they will be held accountable for verifying the qualifications of an instructor, who is later determined to be unqualified. Vendors shall maintain documentation that supports the submission of the Certification of Instructor Qualifications for each course topic and that said documentation shall be submitted to the Louisiana Real Estate Commission upon request.
