Benefits of this class The Vegetable Gardening 101 course is designed to educate clientele on the benefits of home garden production. With an increased desire to produce one’s own food, vegetable gardening is a fun and easy way to start. This workshop will aid participants in making decisions about the home garden and properly manage what they plant. Everything from variety selection to plant management and season extension will be covered. No matter if you just started or have been growing a garden for 50 years, we will have something new for you to learn! We will not focus solely on one crop, but cover some of the things that are important to helping you grow those prize winning tomatoes or the best watermelon you ever tasted!

Site Selection & Soils—February 20

This class will cover how to select the site for your garden and how to manage the soil. We will discuss the benefits of soil types, soil amending and the use of soil samples.

Plants & Planting—March 19

From micro-sized container varieties to large, heavy yielding ones, this class will help you determine the best varieties for your home garden. We will also cover rotational cropping and its benefits.

Raised Beds & Composting—April 16

From ease of maintenance and faster planting to longer seasons and soil-building, raised beds are an excellent option for the home gardener. This session will detail many of those benefits.

Garden Management—May 21

Irrigation, mulching, weed prevention and trellising are all considerations in helping to make managing your garden easier. This session will focus on making you as successful as possible in your home garden.

Vegetables Pests & Diseases—June 18

Is that a beneficial insect or pest? Maybe that is bacterial spot or is it bacterial speck? This session will focus on some of the common garden pests and diseases as well as how to control them.

Harvest, Storage & Season Extension—August 20

Topics such as when to harvest your crop, ways to store it into the winter and how to extend your growing season will be covered. There is an added bonus of leaving with a jar of fresh salsa!
