COPING WITH A BREAKUP – WHY IS IT SOMETHING TO EXAMINE Has been a common factor for adaptive problems for
individuals over time Can cause anxiety, mood symptoms and sometimes
even psychological disorder There is much research about coping strategies but
not so much in this spesific situation To gather knowledge about what are those things that
make a breakup stressful life event – what kind of emotions are experienced and how does everyday life change
To get knowledge that can be applied to support coping when a relationship terminates
THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY To find out what things does a breakup cause
to that need to be dealt with To find out what different strategies are used
to cope with these things
HYPOTHESES A breakup causes many things that need to
be dealt with Compared to stressful life events in general,
ending of a relationship is a highly emotional which causes a need to deal with these occuring emotions
Many different coping strategies are used Social coping – instrumental or emotional - is
a common way to deal with a romantic relationship termination
DATA GATHERING METHODS An internet questionnaire
- Demographic background- Open-ended questions about things that are
experienced to be difficult in breaking up- Open-ended questions about coping strategies
that are used to cope with breakup
