POWERLINES DECEMBER 2018 5 6 1 Volunteer Energy Cooperative Newsletter DEC 2018 As we look to finish up 2018 at Volunteer Energy Cooperative (VEC), I am glad to be able to report to you that your Electric Cooperative is in good shape from both a financial and system operation standpoint. From an electric system capacity standpoint, VEC has never been in better shape. Our ongoing system maintenance programs of replacing aging poles, investing in new substations, updating system protection equipment and clearing the right of way around our power lines continue to improve. This year VEC is investing a record amount on these maintenance programs to improve service to our member consumers. We are always looking for opportunities to improve our service. The less positive and a primary concern the management and VEC Board have at this time deals with the ongoing rate increases from our wholesale power supplier, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). For eight of the last ten years, including the most recent six years in a row, TVA has raised the wholesale rates they charge the local power companies in the Tennessee Valley. TVA’s current annual revenues cover all their costs including operations and maintenance, all capital costs and all debt service. TVA wants to pay down a significant portion of their long- term debt, and we agree with the plan to reduce some of TVA’s debt. Our concern is that TVA’s rates are so high now, in addition to paying down debt they will be building up billions of dollars of excess cash that is not needed for any of their operational costs to run TVA. TVA has now become one of the highest cost wholesale power suppliers in the Southeast United States. We continue to try to engage TVA on this vital issue for our members. Unfortunately, they are already planning another rate increase for next year. The good news is your Cooperative, after eighty-three years in operation, continues to get better as we look forward to a new year. We will continue to work on ways to improve our service and represent our member-consumers, whether that is in meetings with TVA or our legislators in Nashville and Washington. We wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Rody Blevins President/CEO Volunteer Energy Cooperative 2018 Annual Meeting 2018 Annual Meeting was an unqualified success. More than 900 co-op members attended and enjoyed a day of music, free food, giveaways, and exercising their vote. Voices of Lee performed a fantastic tribute to the armed forces, a few oldies and took requests from the audience. Several of the survey cards turned in at the end of the meeting stated that this was the best annual meeting they had attended. Thank you to all who participated. VEC Statement of Nondiscrimination 2020 Calendar Contest The 2019 VEC Calendar is available at your local VEC office. This year’s Calendar is different from those given away in previous years.
