Tuesday Jan 4th, 2022 Hotel Breakfast Depart for Birmingham, Selma, Montgomery 16th Street Baptist Church

Organized in 1873 as the First Colored Baptist Church of Birmingham, Alabama. Sixteenth Street was the first black church in Birmingham. Sunday, September 15, 1963, at 10:22 a.m., the church became known around the world when a bomb exploded, killing four young girls attending Sunday School and injuring more than 20 other members of the congregation. This currently active and vibrant church’s vision is to have a Bible-centric ministry that will Reach, Rebuild and Reproduce disciples through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Birmingham Civil Rights Museum

Unique to sharing the experience of segregation in Birmingham and the demonstrations that were reported on national TV news casts in the 1960’s. Most of the marchers were school children and several thousand were arrested. The marches and demonstrations did break the bonds of public segregation in Birmingham.

Samford University Tour Edmund Pettus Bridge

Now a National Historic Landmark, this Selma bridge was the site of the brutal Bloody Sunday beatings of civil rights marchers during the first march for voting rights. The televised attacks were seen all over the nation, prompting public support for the civil rights activists in Selma and for the voting rights campaign. After Bloody Sunday, protestors were granted the right to continue marching, and two more marches for voting rights followed.

Wednesday Jan 5th, 2022 Hotel breakfast Civil Rights Memorial

Created by Vietnam Veterans Memorial designer Maya Lin, the Memorial is located across the street from the Southern Poverty Law Center's office building in Montgomery, Alabama, a city rich with civil rights history.

Dexter Avenue Baptist Church

In this National Historic Landmark, see the modest pulpit where Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. first preached his message of hope and brotherhood. This church was also a center point of the Montgomery bus boycott. A large mural in the church depicts King’s civil rights crusade from Montgomery to Memphis.

National Memorial for Peace & Justice

The nation’s first memorial dedicated to the legacy of enslaved Black people, it was conceived with the hope of creating a sober, meaningful site where people can gather and reflect on America’s history of racial inequality. The memorial displays writing from Toni Morrison and Elizabeth Alexander, words from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and a reflection space in honor of Ida B. Wells. Bryan Stevenson heads the organization that runs this museum and AP Language students read excerpts from his book Just Mercy. In African American Literature, students read excerpts from Ida B. Wells.

The LEGACY MUSEUM is part of a consortium of museums at Tuskegee University that includes the Dr. George Washington Carver Museum, The Booker T. Washington Home-The Oaks and the Tuskegee Airmen Museum. The HeLa Cell exhibit celebrates the life of the Virginia born Henrietta Lacks.

Friday Jan 7th, 2022 Spelman College Tour High Museum of Art

With more than eighteen thousand works of art in its permanent collection, the High has an extensive anthology of nineteenth- and twentieth-century American and decorative art; significant holdings of European paintings; a growing collection of African American art; and burgeoning collections of modern and contemporary art, photography, folk and self taught art, and African art. The High is also dedicated to supporting and collecting works by Southern artists.
