“i make art not for the eye but for
the mind.” - Marcel Duchamp
Marcel Duchamp is credited with inspiring the
Conceptual Art movement with many of his pieces,
in particular his readymades, most famous of which
is Fountain (1917), a standard urinal basin signed by
the artist with the pseudonym R.Mutt.
This piece is not meant to be beautiful, but to
bring attention to the ownership (or lack thereof) of
artwork by the artist and to call into question the
nature of art. It is meant to be considered rather
than admired.

“It means that all of the planning
and decisions are made beforehand and the
execution is a perfunctory
affair.” - Sol LeWitt
Conceptual art emerged as a movement during
the 1960s. Many of the artists in this movement
discarded the conventional art object in favour of a
documented critical inquiry into the artist’s social,
philosophical and psychological status. By the
mid-1970s they had produced publications, indices,
performances, texts and paintings to this end.Vito Acconci, 1969
