Introduction In Vault Workgroup and Professional 2015 R2, the Copy Design function was updated. The release of Vault Workgroup and Professional 2016 has further refined the Copy Design process. This document discusses the Copy Design features available in Vault Workgroup and Professional 2016. The Copy Design functionality in Vault Basic has not been updated and remains a great tool for many designers.
Accessing Vault Copy Design Copy design can be run as an individual application or by right clicking on a file or files in Vault Workgroup or Vault Professional. To start Copy Design as a standalone application, choose Start / Programs / Autodesk / Autodesk Data Management / Tools / Autodesk Copy Design 2016 for Vault Professional. Starting a standalone copy design will allow you to browse the Vault Explorer for reference during the process.

From within Vault Workgroup or Professional, right click on a file or files and select Copy Design. Copy Design is model driven, so always select the model geometry when using Inventor files. Starting copy design from within Vault Explorer will not allow you to browse Vault Explorer until the copy design dialogue is closed.
Note, you can also use the Edit / Copy Design or the toolbar button to initiate the copy design process.

Copy Design Interface There are 3 areas in the new Copy Design dialogue, Command ribbon, Main Pane and the Panels.
The command ribbon allows adding of files, controls display and settings of the copy design. The main pane is read only and shows the files, properties and actions applied. There are right click menus available in the main pane to initiate steps. The Panels area is editable, so this is where you change file names and set folder locations.

Command Ribbon The first menu on the command ribbon set options for the copy process.
Refresh – Refresh the view if necessary
Drawing View toggle – Default OFF By default, the Drawings and Presentations are not displayed in the main pane but will be copied and renamed by the copy design process. The drawing view can be toggled on and off to show these files if necessary
Select References toggle – Default OFF This toggles behaviour when there are multiple instances of a part. When off, and an instance of a part is selected, all instances of the part will be selected. This reflects the behaviour of the previous Copy Design. When on, instances can be selected and copied or replaced individually.
Automatically Copy Parents toggle – Default ON When off, selecting a part will highlight that the parent sub-assemblies and top level assemblies will have edits applied and the user should copy these files. When on, selecting to choose a part will automatically set the parent sub-assemblies and top level assembly to copy.
Link Drawings and Models toggle – Default ON When off, changes to model file names are not reflected in the drawings and presentations. When on, drawings and presentations are automatically renamed to match the model.

Copy Design Process Walkthrough Aim: To have a version of the Carb assembly with a metal carb body and a black plastic intake plate. New files will be in a new folder.
1. Right click on the Carb.iam file in the Vault and choose Copy Design
2. Add Thumbnail column to the Copy Design dialogue for ease of identification
3. Copy the Carb intake plate and Carb body parts (assembly will copy automatically)

8. Execute the copy design. Copy Design is now run on the server, not the client. This will improve the processing speed over the previous Copy Design.
9. Notice the green ticks confirming success
10. Before closing the copy design dialogue, note you could edit the copy design and create
another variant from the original assembly. 11. Open and modify the files in Inventor

Action Rules Configure Action rules from the main application drop down in the copy design dialogue
Action Rules will set or clear the selected properties during a copy design process. For example, users often wish to ‘take ownership’ of copied files by changing the AUTHOR property from the original value to the current user. This used to be a separate process of modifying the properties but can now be done automatically as part of the copy design.
The Default Rule Set cannot be removed or edited and represents the legacy behaviour of the previous copy design.
NOTE: The Action Rules menu option is only available to administrators.
Action rules are configured in the Windows profile, so are windows profile specific settings.

The default rule applies to all files and ensures that:
The PART NUMBER property is mapped to the new FILE NAME
The CATEGORY is RESET forcing the category assignment rules to apply a category
The iLogicRuleStatus is mapped to REMOVE iLogic Rules
You may wish to copy this default rule and add further rules to suit your workflows. Consider:
CHECKED BY property is set to BLANK
ENGR APPROVED BY property is set to BLANK
AUTHOR property is mapped to current USER
ENGINEER property is mapped to current USER
MASS property is RESET (Resetting a property will apply the default value which may in this case be =<MASS> to pull through the physical properties from Inventor.
Rules are set per Windows user profile but are saved to this location and could be distributed to all workstations.

Only one rule set can be applied during a copy design, but may rules may be created in each set.
Each rule applies to a condition such as FILENAME is * (all files) or FILE EXTENSION is IDW (just inventor IDW files)
Consider the PROVIDER, CLASSIFICATION and IS CONTENT properties as well as standard and custom properties when building rule conditions.
This example resets all properties for IDW files.
Note when multiple rules are created in the rule set, you can change the order of the rules to suit your requirements such as MANUFACTURING drawings has only the PART NUMBER reset followed by ALL remaining drawings (customer drawings and sketches) which have all properties reset.

For each rule, some actions will occur. These are configured in the Property Behaviour section of the dialogue.
The property behaviours will need to match your workflows.

Copy Design Notes
You can copy an entire folder.
You can right click and exclude models. In this example, the top level assembly was excluded before the Clutch Bearing was copied, normally all parent assemblies are selected for copy but the exclude effectively limits the scope of the copy design. This has the same effect as doing a copy design directly on the Clutch Bell Assembly.
