DESCRIPTION
Varicose veins are a frequently occurring condition with up to 40% of women and 25% of men likely to suffer from symptoms such as fatigue, pain and swelling of the lower limbs. Soft tissue breakdown leading to ulceration can result if left untreated. Treatment can take the form of varicose vein surgery, or a new laser treatment for varicose veins, laser ablation, which includes techniques such as EVLT (Endovenous Laser Treatment) and ELVeS (Endolaser Vein System). These new varicose vein treatment techniques mean that suitable patients can be treated as outpatients, under local anaesthetic in around one hour.

What does the new treatment consist of?
The new treatment consists of a radio frequency “microwave” catheter, which is inserted into the vein through a tiny pinhole 2-3mm incision just below the knee using an ultrasound scanner. Once the catheter is correctly positioned and local anaesthetic injected, the microwave catheter gently heats the diseased vein sealing it from the inside, e"ectively closing it down.
Blood then !nds its way back to the heart through more healthy veins. A surgical stocking is applied and after a short rest the patient simply walks away treated.
