7:30 am Continental Breakfast

8:00 -12:00 pm 1. Mastering the Carotid Exam: Getting all the Information Holly M. Beals, BS, RVTThe carotid workshop will include live demonstration on how to perform a complete carotid artery duplex evaluation based upon ICAVL standards and accredidation requirements. Additional medical/surgical technical information will be demonstrated based upon UC Davis vascular surgery protocols (including vessel diameters, length of lesion and distance of lesion from angle of jaw). The workshop is designed to allow registrants hands-on participation and open forum for questions.

2. Upper Extremity Venous Scanning Jeremy Gray BS, RVTThe upper extremity venous workshop will include live demonstration on how to perform a complete upper extremity venous duplex to evaluate for venous thrombosis/obstruction. The workshop will focus on techniques and protocols consistent with ICAVL standards and accreditation requirements. The demonstration will include evaluation of the deep and superficial veins to the level of the wrist. The workshop is designed to allow registrants hands-on participation and open forum for questions.

3. TCD: Protocols and Techniques Colleen Douville, BS, RVTThe TCD workshop will include scanning techniques and live demonstration on how to perform a complete transcranial Doppler evaluation. TARGET AUDIENCEThe program focuses on the education needs of cardiologists, surgeons, and radiologists who treat peripheral vascular diseases. Vascular Care 2013 will introduce special tracks for primary care providers. The program is also in-tended for other health-care providers, including nurses and advanced prac-tice nurses, podiatrists, endocrinologists, wound care specialists, as well as radiology, cardiovascular and vascular laboratory technologists.

NEEDS ASSESSMENTAs the population ages, there is an increasing need to recognize and ef-fectively manage vascular diseases. Arterial diseases commonly affect older adults, especially those with cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes, hy-pertension, tobacco use and hyperlipidemia. Venous thrombosis and chronic venous insufficiency are even more common problems, with disabling and potentially life-threatening complications. This seventh annual installment of the UC Davis Vascular Center’s Vascular Care series addresses the challenges of managing arterial and venous diseases, with an examination of the evi-dence upon which practice guidelines have been based.

As diagnostic and therapeutic technologies have developed rapidly in the past several years, vascular care specialists now have a broader array of choices and options. This educational program broadly addresses many of the aspects of vascular disease management, emphasizing the value of a multi-disciplinary approach and applications of novel technologies. In addi-tion to reviewing the clinical care and diagnostic evaluation of these patients, the program examines contemporary surgical and endovascular options for revascularization, reviews practice standards, and addresses the challenges of clinical decision making for problems with limited evidence to guide choices. The program includes opportunities for audience participation in sessions and case-based discussions.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES• Identify challenges to be met in recognizing and treating peripheral

vascular disease to achieve the best functional outcomes and quality of life

• Discuss medical, surgical and interventional therapies for peripheral artery disease

• List the current roles of surgery and endovascular therapies for aortic aneurysm, both straight forward and complex

• Introduce novel approaches for use of vascular ultrasound and review best practices with the use of the vascular laboratory

• Recognize the need for awareness of PAD associated risks in primary care practices and discuss how to identify, treat and follow up

ACCREDITATIONThe University of California, Davis Health System is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

CREDIT DESIGNATIONPHYSICIAN CREDIT: The University of California, Davis Health System designates this live activity for a maximum of 18 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

MISSION STATEMENTTo educate health care providers through evi-dence-based activities that emphasizes advances in medicine, new medical technology, biomedical research, and changes in health care delivery to improve clinical outcomes.

VISIONProviding medical education for health care professionals to improve patient care.

DISCLOSURE OF RELEVANT FINANCIAL RELATIONSHIPSAs a provider accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, the University of California, Davis Health System Office of Continuing Medical Education must ensure balance, independence, and objectivity in all CME activities to promote improvements in health care and not proprietary interests of a commercial interest. The provider controls all decisions related to identification of CME needs, determination of educational objectives, selection and presentation of content, selection of all per-sons and organizations that will be in a position to control the content, selection of educational methods, and evaluation of the activity. Course directors, planning committee members, present-ers, authors, moderators, panel members, and others in a position to control the content of this activity are required to disclose relevant financial relationships with commercial interests related to the subject matter of this educational activ-ity. Learners are able to assess the potential for commercial bias in information when complete disclosure, resolution of conflicts of interest, and acknowledgment of commercial support are pro-vided prior to the activity. Informed learners are the final safeguards in assuring that a CME activ-ity is independent from commercial support. We believe this mechanism contributes to the trans-parency and accountability of CME.

UC DAVIS VASCULAR CENTERThe UC Davis Vascular Center is a national leader in addressing vascular disease, including peripheral artery disease, cerebrovascular disease and diabetes associated vascular issues. The center’s board-certified surgeons, clinicians and researchers offer comprehensive care using a team approach that emphasizes prevention, early diagnosis and minimally invasive treatments. Through state-of-the-art technology and a strong focus on continuity of care, patients receive the best in both technical support and follow-up treatment. Collaborations between the center’s experts and UC Davis stem cell investigators are leading to new cellular therapies that generate new arteries and restore blood flow in diseased legs and arms, reducing the need for amputations.
