I am very proud this month to announce that VantagePoint has become a member of Surrey Hills Enterprises, a body that seeks to bring together and promote independent companies, organisations and artisans based within the area. Please take a look at our main article this month which explains more about this wonderful local initiative.

Another initiative we mentioned last month is the CowParade, the world’s largest public art event, which is coming to Surrey and West Sussex from May to September. It’s an exciting project which will raise money for local community projects and enterprise schemes that benefi t and enhance the Surrey Hills landscape. VantagePoint is a media partner for this exciting event and

there is lots planned to take advantage of the sight of these beautifully decorated cows within our magnifi cent landscape.

I recently went to a very interesting and informative tour of the Silent Pool Distillery near Albury. They have a great story to tell about a process that is suprisingly complicated and I am quite a fan of the end product. It is well worth a visit to fi nd out for yourself and meet the friendly team, and of course, enjoy a tasting afterwards.

Finally, we welcome a new member to the VantagePoint team. Lauren Broughton has joined us part-time to help out in the offi ce and we are delighted to have her on board!

Barrow Hills SchoolAs I may have mentioned before, I have quite a connection with Barrow Hills. Apart from myself, my brother, brother in law, son and grandchildren all went there and, my son and daughter in law teach there. So, I was delighted to be invited to the Grand Opening of their Nursery Section on 29th January. They have a lovely room (my old classroom!) that opens onto a covered outdoor area overlooking the beautiful gardens. The little ones looked very contented if a little bemused at what was going on! The ribbon was duly cut by the Mayor and the Nursery declared fully open. It now means that you can start at Barrow Hills from 2 years old and stay until you are 13; great in terms of continuity. The beautiful surroundings were, of course, not appreciated by me when I was there!

Is Pilates just for women? Definitely not..!

Men equally benefit from Pilates workouts. A man did invent the concept after all.

Joseph Pilates came up with the idea that core muscles were key, way back in the 1920’s. Joseph Pilates was a professional boxer who was born a sickly child and he overcame his many disabilities by exercising. He developed his Pilates regimen over many years. Whilst he was held in a P.O.W. camp, during WW1, he started inventing machinery to assist and resist his exercises using the bed springs and other items available to make pulley systems. His exercise programme kept him and his fellow prisoners strong in both body and mind.

Pilates does involve a lot of mind over body processing, but don’t let that put you off. Engaging your mind

allows you to be fully aware of your body alignment as you make subtle focused movements. You don’t have to get in touch with your feminine side, chant or wear a leotard! This focus on perfect form (body alignment) and subtle controlled movements is what Pilates is about. What looks simple is in fact challenging to achieve. For example, a Pilates push-up might seem at first glance to be the same as a standard push up but the focus is different.

A healthy body is one that has an equal balance of strength and flexibility. Pilates develops long lean muscles that are strongest closest to the spine protecting your back, improving your posture and allowing more controlled movements of your arms and legs, in-fact providing the building block on which to base your strength and performance training. More and more athletes and sportsmen have turned to Pilates to improve their performance, be it body-builders, cricketers, footballers and, like Joseph Pilates himself, boxers. There’s nothing remotely ‘girly’ about it.

Is Pilates a worthwhile exercise for men? To answer this we invited Vantage Point’s very own Marcus Atkins and a slightly more reluctant Stefan Reynolds, to join us for a Men’s Pilates class at Physio 1to1. Prior to the class Marcus was already a Pilates convert however Stefan was new to Pilates. We questioned them afterwards to find out how they got on and what they thought about Pilates for men. These are their responses to the questions we asked:

Q: Do you know what your core muscles are and what they do?

Stefan: I know more now than I did before yesterday but could probably do with a more detailed appreciation!

Marcus: The core muscles are the deep internal muscles, around the stomach, lower stomach, back and lower back, and not forgetting the pelvic floor. These muscles surround

the spine, lower back, and pelvis, and it’s important that these muscles are strong as they allow safe movement of the arms and legs, and allow the body to bend and twist without causing injury. Arms, legs and head are very heavy, and when moved away from the body, lots of stress is created along the spine due to leverage.

Q: Did you enjoy your Pilates class?

Stefan: Yes, I did. Apart from walking, I lead a fairly sedentary life so it was good to do something different. You were a great teacher and it was good to have the attention to stop me doing things wrong. Also good from my view to be in a small group! Not very good with the breathing though and I do need to be less tense - not sure why I am!

Q: Was it what you expected it to be?

Stefan: It was tougher than I expected and that is no bad thing. I was also a bit unsure about whether my posture was right and I was doing things correctly so you do need a small class to start with until you know more about what you are doing and to ensure what you are doing is correct.

Marcus: Yes it was generally, however, there were a few differences to my regular weekly class. Firstly there was a noticeable difference by having the full length mirror in front of me. I’m not used to watching myself, scary. The individual one-to-one element was great, very specific, and excellent to make sure that every little movement is done correctly. In a large class, my mind-set (having done Pilates for 3-4 years now) is to get through a class without being told that anything needs correcting, very self-conscious. In an individual class, like we had, I felt that your corrections to any of my positions was an aid to me, not a criticism.

Q: Do you consider Pilates to be a worthwhile exercise for men?

Stefan: Yes and especially so for those with certain issues. I can see that it would help me creak less (!) and it must be worthwhile to use and develop inner muscles. I will probably do some of the exercises at home.

Marcus: Pilates is excellent for men, and I can see why more men are turning to it. It’s not just for men with injuries, or men who are elderly and have less flexibility or movement, it’s for all men. Pilates will prevent lots of issues further down the line, helping with core strength, posture etc. Before I did Pilates, when I was standing watching my son’s football match, my lower back would seize up after just 10 minutes or so. With only going to Pilates for one hour a week, it makes a massive difference to me, so there’s no going back, I’ll have to continue for the rest of my life!

We run lots of individual and ‘Men-only’ Pilates classes at Physio 1 to 1. All our Physiotherapists are also Pilates instructors. We offer both mat-work and equipment circuits. Everyone gets a pre-class screening session to allow us to analyse posture, flexibility and strength.

Our classes are small so that individual needs and progressions can be addressed. The small classes allow us to make individual corrections to ensure the exercises are being performed optimally. You don’t have to be injured to attend our sessions and you don’t have to be a fitness freak. We teach all ages and abilities and can focus on individual needs whether that is to be free from back pain or to be able to power-lift more effectively.

As Joseph Pilates said “I must be right. Never an aspirin. Never injured a day in my life. The whole country, the whole world, should be doing my exercises. They’d be happier.”

Men benefit from Pilates because:

1. It strengthens the muscles that count. The pelvic floor, deep abdominal and back muscles that form the protection for your spine and allow you to move more effectively without overloading your spine.2. It develops flexibility. In Joseph Pilates’ own words “You are only as young as your spine is flexible”. 3. It allows your muscles to develop in balance with each other and supporting each other. This allows all your movements to be more powerful and controlled which helps with day to day activities as well as sports activities.4. You are developing your pelvic floor, lower abdominal muscles so all the benefits that come with that control….do I need to explain this one? I’m sure your wives will understand what I’m trying to say!5. It will help improve your posture. You will stand taller, hold your head higher and naturally look more composed. Once you start Pilates this will be the first thing people who know you will comment on.

Step 1: Get on your hands and knees on the floor. Step 2: Walk your hands forward to form a long plank position. Flex your toes and lengthen your calf muscles stretching them towards your heels. Straighten your arms with your hands placed directly below your shoulders (not under your armpits). Lengthen your neck and keep your body in a straight line from your heels to the crown of your head. Step 3: Exhale and engage your stomach muscles by drawing them towards your spine, making sure your hips are in line with the rest of your body, and not sagging towards the floor or elevated up in the air. Step 4: Inhale, and bend your elbows straight back (so your arms brush past your ribs) to lower your body in one piece, making sure your head and neck stay in line. Your breast bone needs to remain lifted between your shoulder blades so your shoulder blades don’t lift up or squeeze together. This is an essential element to teach you control over your shoulders and upper back. Your stomach should not drop nearer to the floor. The aim isn’t to get your nose to touch the ground but to keep your alignment. Step 5: Exhale and straighten your arms. Repeat the press-up as many times as you can whilst maintaining perfect form. Pilates press-ups are done in a slow controlled manner with focus on form and breath control.

The latest addition to the CowParade herd was unveiled at the end of January at Coverwood Farm, the official CowParade HQ. Affectionately named ‘Trusty the Surrey Hills Cow’ by Chairman of the Surrey Hills Trust Fund, Neil Maltby, the Cow was designed to help raise awareness and understanding of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

Said Neil Maltby: “I’m delighted with the design of ‘Trusty the Cow’. I felt strongly that this was a perfect opportunity to raise awareness of the Surrey Hills landscape and the organisations that are in place to help protect this special area. ‘Trusty’ will not only form part of CowParade Surrey but will also help us longer term to promote and educate people about the Surrey Hills when we take her around the County to shows and events.“

Designed and painted by local artist Ali Clarke, who took her inspiration from the established Surrey Hills trademark and the rolling hills, Ali commented: “‘The design for the Surrey Hills cow was inspired directly by the established brand of the organisation. The trademark represents the undulating Surrey Hills landscape and was inspired by the work of Walter Bailey the sculptor commissioned for the boundary markers and artworks across the AONB. The fluid shapes transfer so well on the undulating form of the cow. It was apt that I should paint this alongside real cows on a farm in the heart of the Surrey Hills.”

‘Trusty’ is the second cow to be officially unveiled, with lots more planned in the coming months.

CowParade Surrey is the world’s largest public art event and will see cows positioned around Surrey (and West Sussex) from May-September. The idea is that each cow is ‘sponsored’ by a business, school or charity and decorated by a local artist. The cows, which can be standing, sitting or grazing, will then be herded to the inaugural Surrey Hills Food, Drink and Music Festival on 3rd September where they will be auctioned off for charity. Those judged to be extra special will be auctioned at a gala dinner held at a unique London location later in the year.

Cow ‘sponsors’ can choose a charity of their own to benefit from half of the auction proceeds, with the other 50 per cent going to the Surrey Hills Trust Fund, a charity established to conserve and protect the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, leaving a legacy for generations to come.

CowParade Surrey has already secured offers of support from key organisations including the National Trust, schools and Surrey businesses such as Sandown Park Racecourse and Vines BMW. The Vines BMW Group, as well as sponsoring a Cow, have also supplied the promotional vehicle to Surrey Hills CowParade.

Sean Kelly, Vines Group’s Managing Director, said: “The Surrey Hills CowParade is a brilliant arts initiative to promote enterprise in the county and

we are delighted to become a sponsor. As well as branding a BMW X5 to promote the CowParade, we will also have our own dedicated cow and we hope to encourage

other businesses across Surrey to support this wonderful event which will hopefully raise lots of money for good causes.”

Haslemere Walks for HealthAs part of Waverley’s Walks for Health scheme (in conjunction with Places for People Leisure), Haslemere Walks for Health provide free organised walks with trained leaders around Haslemere and the adjacent countryside.

Following the recent retirement of Martin Osbourne, the two new co-ordinators are Elizabeth Holland and Susan Hitchen both experienced Walk Leaders. They hope to continue the good work Martin has done over the last 10 years and promote the importance of activity and exercise in helping to maintain good health. The social side of Walks for Health is also important helping people who live alone to socialise meet other people and have more interests.

Walks for Health has been very busy over the last year. As well as their usual weekly walks they have had an away day to the South Bank, a pub quiz, a barbecue and a Christmas lunch together.

They aim to vary the weekly walks as much as possible and are always looking for new members and new Walk Leaders.

Walks at the present time take place as follows

Tuesdays - leave from Haslewey at 2.30pm

Thursdays - leave from High Lane Community Centre at 1pm

Saturdays - leave from Haslemere Leisure Centre at 11am

There is a special walk for those who require a walk at a slower rate for half an hour on Tuesdays at Hasleway at 2pm.

Andrew Blagden, HamptonsIn this day and age it is somewhat frightening that £1,000 can go at a blink of an eyelid especially when one factors in the VAT element. With this in mind I would be recommending making a really good first impression – It is amazing how a really well presented front garden, front door and entrance can make, especially as they are features that prospective buyers will notice again as they leave.

Jeremy Orchard, Emery & Orchard With a £1000 budget I would recommend a home owner who is considering a sale should spend the money improving and embellishing the front of their property with works that could include making sure that any paintwork is in good condition, the garden and driveway is well maintained and perhaps adding hanging baskets to add some interest and colour. As buyers are often first attracted to the photograph of the front of a house these works will insure a good first impression and help generate enquiries from internet listings.

Paint peeling from windows is also not a good first impression, so a quick paint and clean will always be worthwhile. It is also easy and inexpensive to upgrade bathrooms with new suites and tiling which can quickly become features rather than being dreary and uninviting. Light and airy bathrooms are very important with bright tiling and good lighting which will always aid the saleability of any home.

Therefore money spent on making the front garden look appealing with some colourful flowers in pots or flower beds and hanging baskets. Cut the grass and trim the hedges and get rid of leaves and debris on the drive. If you have any budget left over look to declutter and maybe put some things in store or hire a skip if the items are not going to move with you.

What will happen is that first time buyers, who have been faced with strong competition from investment buyers in the past, will have a better chance of securing a property in conjunction with continued low interest rates.

Wey & Arun Canal A major step towards completion of a new canal crossing in Surrey was made when volunteer bricklayers began work on laying the brick cladding on the new bridge, which spans the Wey & Arun Canal at the Alfold entrance to Dunsfold Park aerodrome and business complex. The Trust aims to re-open most of the canal between Tickner’s Heath in Dunsfold and Fast Bridge on the A281 at Alfold at the beginning of October. Small boats will be able to navigate that stretch for the first time in more than150 years. The re-opening will coincide with the Trust’s celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the 23-mile Wey & Arun Canal being declared open at the Compasses site. Liphook in Bloom Sunday 6th March Members of Liphook in Bloom are getting ready for another busy year. National Eczema Society Saturday 12th March 2pm The West Surrey and North East Hants Support Group of the National Eczema Society are once again organising an information afternoon at The Surrey Technology Centre, Surrey Research Park, Guildford GU2 7YG. Their speaker is Dr. Susan Chan, Biomedical Research Centre Clinical Research Consultant in Paediatric Allergy, who will talk about the ADAPT trial, which is a clinical study to find a treatment for severe eczema in children and adolescents. Eczema is a skin condition that affects up to 1 child in 5 in the UK. Eczema can have a serious impact on both the child and their family, with constant itching and disturbed sleep. Some children have such severe eczema that the usual treatments do not help them. Everyone is welcome to come along and learn more about this distressing, itchy skin condition. There is no admission charge but a raffle will be held and donations are most welcome. National Eczema Society literature will be available. The Haslemere PlayersThe Haslemere Players is an amateur theatre company which has been delighting local audiences for over 110 years. It is dedicated to staging popular musical theatre productions of the highest possible standard and regularly wins awards of excellence from NODA (the National Operatic and Dramatic Association). Audiences, performers, musicians, technicians, scenery makers and painters, props and production teams come from Haslemere and surrounds, making this a genuine community effort in which ‘there’s a role for everyone’. In addition, the Players support an individual charity – usually a local one - with each musical production.

The Players produce three shows a year; two stage musicals in March and October and a cabaret style production, Showstoppers, in mid June. This is a cornucopia of exciting, smash hit songs from popular musicals, which the audience enjoy with either a delicious two course supper or afternoon tea and homemade cakes at their table. All productions are staged at Haslemere Hall.

This year sees the Players entertaining audiences with the multi-award-winning production, ‘Sister Act’, in mid March and iconic Oscar winner, ‘Singin’ In The Rain’, at the end of October. This year, Showstoppers will be on 11th and 12th June with Memories of the Movies Part III – an affectionate salute to the Silver Screen!

Sister Act runs from Tuesday 15th – Saturday 19th March at Haslemere Hall, with a matinee performance on the Saturday. The Haslemere Players are supporting the Breast Cancer ‘MoonWalk’ with this production.

Haslemere Players Members are part of a fun, warm and friendly team dedicated to creating the best possible musical and stage performances. They actively welcome new members of all ages and stages in life.

There are lots of opportunities to get involved, from treading the boards, being part of the nine-piece plus orchestra to working behind the scenes. This includes opportunities such as stage management, being part of the props team, building and painting scenery and maintaining the extensive costume wardrobe. No previous theatre experience is needed - just energy, enthusiasm and a good sense of humour!

John Richardson visited the Pantanal primarily to see the Jaguar but the world’s largest freshwater wetland area serves as a lush reservoir with thousands of exotic plants which support a huge number of birds and animals. John was able to photograph at close quarters not only the Jaguar, but Giant Ant-eaters, Tapirs, Armadillos, crocodiles, the Capybara and some of the 475 species of birds. SCHOOLS“I don’t want to go to school” - every parent’s nightmare

”I don’t want to go to school today.” These are the words that every parent dreads hearing, especially in the fraught chaos that usually accompanies the

morning routine of most families. But before the panic sets in, visions of having to find another school at short notice, potential home schooling, not to mention new uniforms take over, it might just be worth reading this article. A child may not want to go to school for a number of reasons. I can certainly cast my mind back 38 years and recall quite clearly not wanting to go to my Reception class on a handful of occasions. I can’t even remember why, but I do remember clinging to my mother for dear life, crying, kicking and making a noise that must have emanated throughout every corridor in the building. I can also remember being aged 13 and getting out of the car on a Sunday night to be dropped off at boarding school and not being terribly happy about it. But to put these events into perspective, what I know now is that after all those years of attending school as a pupil, I definitely got over those occasional ‘off days’ and actually came to really enjoy the school environment. So much so that I’ve invested the last 25 years working in one as a teacher! Whilst it is not a common occurrence in the school where I teach , there are – and I’m sure always will be – some occasions when children simply don’t want to come to school. For the parent, this can be - depending on the scene a child makes or what they say – at the very least frustrating, often upsetting and sometimes extremely worrying. Typically, these scenes tend to play

themselves out when time is at a premium and everyone is rushing around determined not to be late for their morning appointments. Quite often the statement comes as a bolt out of the blue and you have absolutely no idea why your child is showing a sudden resistance to school. But rest assured, there are steps that you can take to get to the root cause of the issue – if indeed there is one at all. So, what are the potential reasons behind your child’s clear aversion to school? Unsurprisingly, there could be just one or just a few reasons. These include being separated from the established bond with mum who provides a sense of security and support; the change of routine which can trigger anxiety; feelings of inadequacy if they are struggling to complete a particular task / in a particular subject or friendship issues. It can sometimes even be the stark realisation that school is now part and parcel of everyday life and your child is rebelling against the fact that the freedom to choose what to do most of the day is gone. Or even something as simple as not wanting to use a different lavatory! What is important at this stage, is how you as a parent respond when faced with a child who simply does not want to let go. Firstly, let your child know that you are in charge, not them, so be quietly assertive but stay calm. Hand your child over to the teacher quickly and do not linger (tempting I know) in the background to check that all is well. Children rarely stay unsettled for

more than a few minutes but are quite capable of putting on a show if it means it might get the parents’ attention. Even the youngest children will know how to ‘press your buttons’. Any school worth their salt will call to provide reassurance that your child has settled on the first day or two that he / she might exhibit this type of behaviour. After that, no news is good news and you can assume that your child is fine and getting on with their day. The teacher will most likely confirm this to you at pick up time. Do talk to your child’s teacher so that you can both dig deeper and try and identify the reason behind the reluctance to go to school. You can then work together as a team to develop a strategy to deal with the problem - and then stick to it. At home, focus on talking about the positive aspects of school, create a sense of excitement about what might be happening during the upcoming week (the teacher can tell you this) and yes, possibly use simple rewards such as a play in the park (but not money or sweets) to encourage the appropriate behaviour and acceptance of the need to go to school with minimum fuss. It’s not easy being a parent and sometimes you may find it helpful to share your experiences with other mums and dads, as most have had to deal with this type of issue at some point in their child’s life. Likewise, staff at the school will have a wealth of experience you can tap into, along with useful practical solutions to change your child’s perception of the school environment. Getting to the bottom of what is upsetting your child is key. Once that is sorted, you can look at how to overcome the problem and soon, not wanting to go to school will be a thing of the past.

Haslemere Decorative And Fine Arts Society Tuesday 15th March 2pm ‘Rescuing Zeugma from The Floodwaters of the Euphrates’ is the exciting title of the next lecture at Haslemere Hall. Lecturer and Archaeologist Louise Schofield, who was instrumental in setting up the multinational rescue excavations at the Roman city of Zeugma on the Euphrates before it was flooded for the Birecik dam, will describe the race to preserve Zeugma from the rising water of the new dam built for irrigation and energy production. Container plants for bees and butterfi les

Whether you’ve got a garden, patio, balcony, or a windowsill, remembering to choose fl owering plants that produce pollen and nectar that bees and other pollinating insects can access is a wonderfully worthwhile thing to do. By encouraging nature into your area you can really transform your garden, bringing the whole area to life. There’s nothing more entertaining than watching bees, butterfl ies and moths in your garden. These fascinating insects will raise your spirits and inspire you.

If you’re looking for beautiful plants that will grow well in containers and encourage bees, hoverfl ies, butterfl ies and other precious pollinating insects to your garden, the following suggestions will help you:

Erigeron karvinskianus is such a pretty fl ower. It adds a delicate softness to walls, steps and other areas of hard landscaping, giving them a touch of beauty, and a delicacy that might have previously been thought impossible. It’s also a super choice for hanging baskets, containers and window boxes, fl owering non-stop from early summer to the fi rst frosts.

I love growing hardy Gerbera garvinea in containers. My plants have survived without any special care through the coldest of our winters, growing larger in size each year. They produce such an abundance of fl owers that I also use them for cut fl owers. With regular feeding and deadheading, my Gerbera garvinea have fl owered non-stop from early spring until they have really been hammered by the frosts in winter. Gerbera garvinea ‘Sweet Surprise’ is part of a new series of hardy Gerbera that have been specially bred to provide hardy plants that produce a continuous display of fl owers

over three seasons. This particular cultivar has large, candy pink fl owers, but you’ll fi nd diff erent coloured fl owering Gerbera from the same series.

Thyme is another super plant to grow in containers. When you’re harvesting thyme, resist temptation to remove your stems in their entirety from the very base of the plant. Instead cut your harvest from the tips of your plant which will encourage bushy growth. There are so many varieties of thyme to choose from, varieties of Lemon thyme provide a delicious fl avour in cooking, as does Orange-scented thyme.

Other worthy candidates to grow in containers to provide pollen and nectar for pollinating insects include: Lavandula angustifolia, Origanum, Cosmos, Limnanthes douglasii, Calendula offi cinalis, Osteospurmum, Aubrieta, Clarkia, Sarcococca, Sedum and Scabious. Single-fl owered varieties provide accessible pollen and nectar – avoid double-fl owered varieties. Try wherever you can to provide a continuous supply of nectar throughout the year. Look out for the ‘Perfect for Pollinators’ logo on plants at your local garden centre or nursery.

None of the plants I have mentioned here require a peat-based compost, so use a peat free alternative growing media. I’ve had excellent results using Dalefoot Composts, a range of peat-free composts made from 100% natural ingredients including bracken and sheep’s wool. Dalefoot’s wool-based potting compost is ideal for containers, the sheep’s wool that’s incorporated into this compost has naturally absorbent properties which provide extra water retention. This means that your containers require less watering which is a bonus.

If you have the choice, position your containers in a sunny spot as butterfl ies like the warmth and will be more inclined to visit your plants. Deadhead your plants regularly to encourage further fl owering and keep your containers well watered. Avoid using any insecticides or pesticides in your garden as they are very damaging to insects and wildlife.

Baking at Easter

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/350°F/gas mark 4.

2. Cream the butter (or margarine) and sugar together in an electric mixer.

3. Slowly add the eggs, then the flour and vanilla and mix until fully combined. Make sure you scrape the bowl with a spatula between mixing.

4. Place the cupcake cases in a muffin tin and spoon approximately 50ml (1¾fl oz) of mixture into each one. Bake in the oven for 20–25 minutes.

5. Once the cakes are baked and spring back to the touch, take them out of the tin immediately. Leave to cool before decorating.

6. Brush the top of each cupcake with a little cooled, boiled apricot glaze. Roll out the yellow-green sugarpaste to a 3mm (1/8”) thickness and cut out twelve 6cm (2 3/8”) circles of paste. Place these onto the cupcakes and smooth them down with the palm of your hand.

7. Shape 4g (just under ¼oz) of Bridal White sugarpaste into a long teardrop shape for the bunny’s ear. Flatten it slightly with the palm of your hand and taper the top of the ear into a point. Roll out a small amount of Pink Sugar Dough and cut out an inner ear shape. Attach it in the centre of the ear with edible glue.

8. Make another ear in the same way but fold it over in the middle. Trim the bottom of each ear straight and use edible glue to attach them to the cupcake. Repeat to make 11 pairs of ears for the remaining cupcakes.

9. Roll out the yellow SFP thinly and cut out 36 little blossoms. Pipe a small dot of royal icing into the centre of each flower using a no. 1 nozzle. Stick one to the straight ear with edible glue. Secure the remaining blossoms over the top of the cupcakes.

4. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to 5mm (¼”) thick. Line a large baking tray with parchment paper, place the biscuit dough onto the tray and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

5. Cut out 24 egg shapes using the egg- or oval-shaped cookie cutter.

6. Place the cookies on two baking trays lined with parchment so they are not touching then bake in the oven for 10–15 minutes. The biscuits should be slightly brown around the edges when baked. Leave to cool.

7. Brush the biscuits with cooled, boiled apricot glaze. Roll out the green-coloured sugarpaste to 3mm (1/8”) thick and cut out eight egg shapes from the paste. Lay a piece of sugarpaste onto each cookie and smooth down with your hands. Repeat this method with Pink and Yellow Sugar Dough to make eight pink and eight yellow egg cookies.

8. Roll out a small amount of the remaining green sugarpaste thinly and cut out a circle using each of the different-sized round cutters. Attach the green circles randomly over the pink eggs using edible glue.

9. Make up the royal icing according to the packet instructions and divide it into two bowls. Colour one half with Rose dust food colour and the other half with Yellow and a spot of Orange dust food colours.

10. Fit a small piping bag with a no. 1.5 nozzle and fill 2/3 with pink royal icing. Starting from the left and piping one line at a time, pipe a crisscross pattern over the yellow cookies. Pipe loops across the middle of each of the green cookies in pink royal icing.

11. Fit another small piping bag with a no. 1.5 nozzle and fill 2/3 with yellow royal icing. Pipe zigzag lines above and below the pink line on the green cookies.

1. Place the butter, sugar and vanilla extract into an electric mixer and cream them together until well-combined and creamy. Avoid over-mixing as this will cause the biscuits to spread as they are baking.

2. Add the egg until well combined, then turn the mixer down to the lowest setting and add a little of the flour. Gradually add all the flour and mix until a dough is formed.

3. Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/375°F/gas mark 5.

1. From the off-street parking on Sandy Lane, walk back down towards the A3100 until you see a signed footpath, the North Downs Way, on your left just past Manor Cottage. Passing Piccards Manor, you soon en-ter countryside with a green field on your right with houses beyond. Continue into light woodland and the houses soon give way to the ridge of the Hog’s Back on your right.

2. You soon reach the farm buildings for Piccard’s Farm and continue ahead on the lane past the farm-house. Follow the lane round a left-hand bend and shortly after, turn right through a pair of open gates, still on the North Downs Way. This track is the driveway to Conduit Farm, so please keep an eye on any off-lead dogs. Keep straight on following the line of the Hog’s Back until you reach a sharp right bend to the farm-house. Leave the track and fork left and then right onto a narrow sandy path, maintaining the original direction.

WALK - Artington and Loseley

The walk

This is a very pleasant and fairly short walk which goes through some lovely, peaceful countryside at the foot of the Hog’s Back. It then doubles back through the grounds of Loseley Park before meeting the river Wey for a brief final stroll along the towpath. I walked it in early February and happily it was not at all muddy. It is also dog friendly as is the pub at the end of the walk, which is reputedly Guildford’s oldest.

3. This sunken footpath goes past the Loseley Estate Nature Reserve on your left and soon you will reach a 4-way signpost. Turn left here and do downhill on an-other sunken footpath. Pass (and ignore) a footpath on your right up stairs and you will come to the end of a lane by Little Polsted. Turn left here and go past a closed metal gate, keeping ahead past Polsted Lodge on your left. When you come to a closed wooden gate into the Loseley Estate, follow the footpath left and then right. You will have a fine view of Loseley House on your right.

Loseley House was built between 1562 and 1568. The new house replaced a smaller one which Elizabeth I declared was not ‘adequate’ for her to visit and requested some-thing larger be built. As was common, much of the stone was reclaimed from earlier buildings, in Loseley’s case from the Cistercian Abbey of Waverley ten miles away at Farnham where ruins can still be seen. The great hall is the principal room containing panelling from Henry VIII’s Nonsuch Palace, a minstrel’s gallery, carvings by Grinling Gibbons, panels from Henry VIII’s banqueting tents and a collection of royal and family portraits.

4. Keep ahead over a stile and you will see a pictur-esque lake ahead. You can take a small detour here through a swing gate and take advantage of the pic-nic tables conveniently sited around it. Keep ahead skirting past the lake through an open gateway and through the middle of a large field. There is a lovely view ahead of the small hamlet of Littleton with the majestic North Downs in the distance. Go through another open gateway and head towards a charming

half-timbered cottage. Go through a swing gate past the cottage to meet a lane.

5. Cross straight ahead and join a footpath just past the driveway to Orange Grove. Keep on the footpath, which passes the Surrey Police headquarters at Mount Browne on your left, until it ends. Keep ahead until you meet the A3100. Turn left along the pavement for 50 yards and then cross to follow a signed track which goes under a railway bridge to reach St Catherine’s Lock on the River Wey. Turn left on the towpath and follow the river past the foothill of St Catherine’s Chapel.

6. Go under a footbridge over the river and shortly afterwards, turn left alongside a spring and meet Ferry lane which meets the A3100 at the top. Turn right here and shortly you will reach Ye Olde Ship Inn. Cross the road and rejoin Sandy Lane and the end of the walk.

Home Start in Waverley Tuesday 19th April Their volunteer training course starts on Tuesday 19th. Home-Start in Waverley provides home visiting support to families struggling with the demands of coping with young children. Their next Volunteer Preparation Course will run in Godalming on Tuesdays for 9 weeks, breaking for half term



week, so it is ideal to attend if you have school age children! If you have parenting experience, can spare just 3-4 hours a week and would like to support a young local family please don’t hesitate to contact them for more information. Haslemere Festival ChorusFriday 22nd April at 7.30pm Haslemere is celebrating the Queen’s 90th Birthday in style. There will be a Celebration Concert in St Christopher’s Church featuring the Haslemere Festival Chorus. The programme will consist of readings and music to mark the 90 years of the Queen’s life. Entry is free with a retiring collection and cash bar. On Saturday 23rd April a Carnival Procession will leave Lion Green at 2pm and make its way to Haslemere High Street for a giant tea party. The Procession will consist of cars from every decade of her life accompanied by fl oats from local businesses, schools and societies. As the date is 23rd April the procession will be joined by the Society of St George for a double celebration. Go along and watch the Procession and join the Tea Party. Entry is free with a modest charge for tea and scone.

Haslemere Festival’s Little Lumpy Cycle Sportive is back in Haslemere for its 8th year, to test the stamina of local cyclists - and it’s bigger and better than ever! There are now four levels of endurance: – Taster – New for 2016! This is a 19 mile cycle with 1,435ft of climbing, ideal for cyclists new to The Little Lumpy and families of all ages. Sport: 38 mile cycle with 1,970ft of climbing; Challenge: 59 mile cycle with 4,073ft of climbing and the aptly named, Epic: 100 mile cycle with 7,320 ft of climbing. The Little Lumpy Cycle Sportive start and fi nish location is again at Haslemere’s Woolmer Hill Sports Association Clubhouse, who are also kindly providing free parking, changing facilities, showers and all the comforts of a modern clubhouse. Cyclists who have competed before will know that the delicious food provided is all home cooked and is becoming quite legendary, plus there is free tea / coffee and a bacon butty provided at the beginning to kick start you! Wildlife and gardening activities are run at the commu-nity garden in the school holidays, and Petworth Com-munity Garden have created permaculture gardens in Petworth Primary School and Duncton Junior School where they run weekly eco clubs for the children. They also helped to create the amazing ‘Dragon garden’ at Graffham nursery and infant school, to help children enjoy early years gardening and play.

Petworth Community Garden is part of ‘Local Offer’, of-fering activities to children with extra needs, and they are partnered with Petworth Family Centre with the ‘Parent Volunteering’ programme, offering parents a variety of opportunities as a stepping stone back into working life.

The projects are always full and busy, enjoyed by a wide range of people. This spring the community gar-den needs to restart their Thursday group due to huge demand for the services, and are currently looking for funding towards this. They are committed to being ac-cessible to people on low incomes and offer the ser-vices for donations only, and are looking for interested partners and sponsors.

The garden group is a great way to meet people from all walks of life, and enjoy the many and varied bene-fits that working in a supported community group can provide. There are people of all ages and abilities in the group and there are indoor and outdoor activities and jobs for all abilities.

Petworth Community GardenPROFILE

Petworth Community Garden is an organic garden project, grown for the community by the community, and has its roots in the ‘Organic Food for all’ scheme which was set up to help local people with limited means learn to ‘grow your own’ and have access to free fresh organic fruit and vegetables.

It has been running for just over 10 years now, and started with a small group of local volunteers on a hugely overgrown allotment in Petworth. Over the years it has grown and developed, becoming wheel-chair accessible, with wildlife ponds, wildflower areas, and a children’s garden area, and has run many dif-ferent projects, including therapeutic horticulture ses-sions with adults and children with special needs.

Current projects include Tuesday ‘Learn and Grow’ ses-sions from 10am-2pm, supported by Comic Relief. This is a wheelchair accessible mixed group where partic-ipants can learn and enjoy organic gardening togeth-er. All volunteers work according to need and ability, enjoy a seasonal soup for lunch and everyone receives a share of the harvest at the end of the session. Fresh produce is grown year round, and partnered with Pet-worth Food Bank, the project offers opportunities for locals on low incomes to enjoy a share in the harvest whilst learning how to grow sustainable food at home.

Petworth Community Garden is presently looking for sponsorship towards their ‘Plot to Plate project’ for 2016, here harvest is gathered from the garden in the morning then participants learn to transform it into healthy delicious and low cost meals with help from The Organic Cookery School. Wonderful jams and chut-neys and preserves from the produce are also made to sell at local events.

A Men’s Shed project runs from 10am-2pm on Wednes-days, thanks to the generosity of Petworth Community Church. Here volunteers design and create beautiful rural crafts over a cup of tea and a bowl of soup in the accessible activity shed on site. Again this is a mixed group with opportunities for all abilities, and the crafts are sold at local events with proceeds going back into the project.
