Soccer Player. Career Changer. World Shaper.Matt Clemson considers himself fortunate. In Murray, Kentucky, he grew up in a family that “advocated the pursuit of excellence.” His younger brother, a nuclear engineer in the U.S. Navy, has served a tour in the Middle East. His younger sister, spurred by a desire to help people with disabilities, is pursuing a doctorate in physical therapy.

Inspired and motivated by his siblings, Matt, a former college soccer player, decided to seek a Vanderbilt MBA after three years of managing the procurement of raw materials for Bridgestone. For Matt, it was less about personal advancement than the opportunity to build the skills “to leave my community and the people around me a little better off…”

You’ll earn a door-opening degree that carries a prestigious name.

The rigorous curriculum—built around a strong foundation of general management skills and career concentrations and specializations—

is carefully crafted with input from business professionals so that your education is market-driven. The emphasis on immersion experiences and practical, hands-on education allow you to apply what you’re learning to real companies.

No part-time or undergraduate students will compete with you for resources, career services or professors’ time. The emphasis here is on the

full-time graduate program.

The unique seven-week modular calendar means you’ll complete significant study in your career field sooner than you would with more

traditional programs—this is a real advantage as you interview in the fall for the first-year summer internships that will lead to the job you want after graduation.

21 reasons students and alumni recommend the Vanderbilt MBA.

International study opportunities on six continents will give you a global perspective that’s critical in today’s business world.

The whole program is focused on you—your interests, your needs, your

goals—and you can shape your experience to suit them. While building a strong core of knowledge, you’ll have an unusual degree of flexibility to choose electives (including courses from other schools within the university). Even your campus visit as a prospective student will be tailored to your interests.

You’ll learn from world-renowned faculty who are leaders in their fields. They do more than impart knowledge. They’re incredibly accessible and serve as mentors as well as teachers. Long after graduation, Owen alums often call on professors for ideas and advice.

Compared to many schools, the Vanderbilt MBA program is small by design. That means smaller class sizes (9:1 ratio of students to

faculty), more opportunities for interaction and more individual attention.

owen.vanderbilt.edu 3

10 You’re not just part of a school. You’ll be part of a community

of colleagues and friends who work hard, play hard and enjoy Owen’s rich social life together. Students commonly say it’s an atmosphere they didn’t find when visiting other schools, but you’ll notice it from the first day you’re here.

Want to start a new club or initiative? Just ask! Administration and faculty here are incredibly open to new ideas. In fact, many of

Owen’s most successful undertakings—from the Global Food Festival to hosting the international Net Impact Conference to the multi-disciplinary Project Pyramid to alleviate global poverty—were developed and are led by students.

Owen is renowned for having one of the top Finance departments in the world and has a strong history of placing students in

leading financial institutions globally.

With a Vanderbilt MBA, you’ll be in demand among recruiters. Students here are known for their innovative problem solving, analytical skills

and strategic thinking that help them make a difference in an organization from day one. Recruiters say that Owen students are the people they want to work with—determined, well-prepared team players.

Vanderbilt MBA ranks #19 among private U.S. graduate programs and is one of only six schools of similar size (total MBA enrollment in the

200-400 range) to make it into the top 30 (U.S. News and World Report).

You’ll be among winners. Vanderbilt MBA students consistently excel in national case competitions, outperforming some of the world’s best-known business schools.

You’ll benefit from a supportive network of alumni who will help you not only while you’re in school but throughout your career.

Lily CrawfordVanderbilt MBA 2011Associate Brand Manager, Mattel, Los Angeles, CAHometown: Madison, MSUndergraduate: College of CharlestonOwen Activities: Vanderbilt Entrepreneurship Association (Board), Vanderbilt Marketing Association

“Nashville is an entrepreneurial city, and almost all students here tap

into that and work on awesome projects. There is enough going on in

terms of commerce and entertainment to keep you busy for two years,

but it is also a really easy place to live. It is cheap, there is plenty

of parking (especially compared to D.C.!), people are nice and the

weather is amazing!”

owen.vanderbilt.edu 5

You’ll find especially strong support for entrepreneurship here. Owen offers a total of $185,000 in funding each year to highly

motivated students to help them start businesses while in the program. But that’s just the start—you’ll have access to the priceless connections and mentoring from professors and successful alums, not to mention the incredible resources of the Entrepreneur Center.

Owen’s Career Management Center prepares you for success throughout your career. It’s not just a two-year relationship. It’s for a lifetime.

You’ll enjoy a highly diverse community, with students from all regions of the United States and 35 different countries. Three-fourths of the

Luke Froeb, William C. Oehmig Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship and Free Enterprise

“After Professor Froeb’s microeconomics class, I always consider things from an economist’s perspective. Froeb has a truly unique way of connecting with his students that I will always remember. I have developed a new appreciation for economics.”

The finest scholars, researchers, teachers and practitioners make up Vanderbilt’s accomplished faculty.

Educated at the best universities and seasoned with significant experience, these faculty members

are in demand as conference speakers and panelists, consultants, authors and referees for prominent

academic journals, and experts for leading media outlets.

What Students Say

Brian McCann, Assistant Professor of Strategic Management

“Professor McCann’s Corporate Strategy course made me a better problem-solver by encouraging me to think creatively and critically, consider all possible solutions to problems and frame my analysis and solutions in a logical manner. Several courses required this, but what I learned in this class will especially help me in my post-Owen job as a management consultant.”

Jennifer Escalas, Associate Professor of Marketing

“Jenny, as she prefers to be called by her students, brings brand marketing to life through developing compelling narratives and incorporating real-world examples into her teaching. She is able to facilitate discussion in such a way that her classes feel less like a lecture and more of a group of professional colleagues working together to solve the latest issues in business. Jenny’s combination of professionalism, expertise and personal attention to her students makes her a hallmark of the already stellar marketing faculty.”

David Owens, Professor of the Practice of Management and Innovation

“Professor Owens teaches for the love of teaching. He is passionate about helping people and organizations push the boundaries of what they consider possible. His focus on innovation—and the group dynamics that either celebrate or kill innovation—translate into the best courses I have had here at Owen.”

Germain Böer, Professor of Accounting; Director, Owen Entrepreneurship Center

“When I came down to Nashville from New York for my campus visit, I randomly knocked on a professor’s door to talk about some of my business ideas and whether I could work on them at Owen. Professor Germain Böer gave me thirty minutes of his time, and it was at that point that I knew that Owen was the right place for me.”

Nancy Hyer, Associate Professor of Operations Management, Associate Dean of Academic Programs

“Managing and Improving Processes was incredible! Professor Hyer is so energetic and truly loves the subject matter. I thoroughly enjoyed the class and look forward to referring to the material in future endeavors.”

Here, great professors are also great mentors, advisers and friends.

World Traveler. Entrepreneur. World Shaper.Paige Brown has an abiding love of new places and experiences. At SMU, the self-confessed “travel fanatic” spent four months on a ship sailing the world. After working for an ad agency in Denver (Coors was her primary client), she spent a year in Karlsruhe, Germany, as a technology transition consultant for Accenture. Perhaps it’s not surprising that Paige was President of Owen’s Global Business Association. Or that she was a coordinator for Owen Bridges, which promotes closer ties between the school’s U.S. and international students…

Recruiters say the quality of candidates among Vanderbilt MBAs is outstanding. That’s why

these and other prestigious firms hire Owen students who have the skills, the drive and the

determination to move their organizations forward. Below is a select list of companies that hired

students from the classes of 2011 and 2012 (full-time and internships).

Vanderbilt University offers one of the most beautiful campuses in one of the most livable U.S. cities—Nashville, Tennessee. Nowhere will you find a more appealing combination of warmth and energy. It surprises many who come for a visit, and it hooks those who stay for a degree.

Vanderbilt’s history began in 1873 when Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt had a vision of a place that would “contribute to strengthening the ties that should exist between all sections of our common country.” It has since become an internationally recognized research university with strong partnerships among its 10 schools, neighboring institutions and the community.

Nashville, too, has become a gem— a major southern city with a rich diversity in population and world-class amenities. Vanderbilt MBA students, especially those from the Northeast and far West, rave about the unexpected appeal. Many find it impossible to leave post-Owen and choose to live and work here.

Vanderbilt Fast Facts• Ranked #17 by U.S. News &

World Report

• 330 parklike acres and designated a national arboretum

• World-class concerts and some of the hottest alternative acts on campus annually

• 6,900 undergraduates, 5,800 graduates and professional students from 90 countries and 50 states

• Faculty awards including Nobel, Fulbright, Guggenheim, MacArthur and Mellon

• Comprehensive Student Recreation Center and more than 40 intramural sports

• Division 1-A NCAA sports including basketball, football, baseball, soccer, tennis and golf

Experience a world-class research university in a vibrant, livable city.

Picture this: Cutting-edge research combines with natural beauty. Southern charm mixes with big-city

buzz. A low cost of living complements a high quality of life. A state-of-the-art medical center emerges

from an educator’s vision some fourteen decades ago. Seemingly paradoxical, Vanderbilt University

and Nashville, instead, reflect those contrasts in wonderful ways. Their unique combinations make the

campus and the city an amazing place to get an education and to enjoy life.

Path Finder. Wealth Manager. World Shaper. After several years with an executive recruiting firm in New York City, Julie Vavrichek realized she wanted to pursue a different path. It was an ideal time, she reasoned, to earn an MBA. She chose Vanderbilt in part for its strength in Human and Organizational Performance, which related to her previous experience, and in part because she wasn’t sure what she wanted to pursue next. “Owen had such a strong academic program across disciplines,” she says, “that regardless of what area I focused on, I would get an excellent education…”
