STUDENT CHALLENGE 2018

Instructions to Applicant The Student Challenge provides 48 Grade 11 and 12 students a unique opportunity to learn about the application process, training, and a career in law enforcement. The students enrolled in this program will receive instruction in legal studies, patrol tactics, firearms, force options, drill, and reality-based simulations. All applicants must be attending a school within the Vancouver School District.

APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• interested in pursuing a career in policing• Grade 11 or 12 student in good standing (16 years or older)• good school grades and attendance• physically fit• 1.5-mile run in less than 12 minutes• non-smoker• positive attitude• demonstrated leadership in school• good citizen in the community

The Student Challenge is an nine-day program, running from Sunday, March 17 to Sunday, March 25, 2018. It is an excellent learning experience, and extremely challenging, both mentally and physically. The focus will be on teamwork, confidence building, and teaching the students about what a career as a police officer requires.

The Student Challenge Program provides an opportunity for the participants to learn about policing as a career, and the variety of sections within the VPD, through guest speakers.

Training will include:

• use of force• firearms• legal concepts• traffic law studies• problem solving• physical training

Students will then have the opportunity to put their newly acquired knowledge to the test through reality-based scenarios.

Please complete the following application form / questionnaire using complete sentence structure. Once finished, submit the application form to your School Liaison Officer by November 24, 2017. Late applications will not be accepted.

All applicants are subject to a criminal record check.

Honesty, integrity and lifestyle are areas that are closely scrutinized in considering Student Challenge applications.

Successful candidates will be required to pay a non-refundable fee of $175.00 once they have received their acceptance letter from the Vancouver Police Department. Cheques should be payable to VPD Student Challenge. All materials and uniforms will be supplied.

Please note that all successful applicants will be screened prior to commencement of the Student Challenge. If there are integrity issues, the applicant is subject to termination.

An information session will be held approximately six weeks prior to the start of the Student Challenge program. A parent/guardian must attend the information session with the student.

ASSUMPTIONS OF RISK The Vancouver Police Department's Student Challenge course will involve, among other things:

(a) a test of physical abilities, including an obstacle course; (b) control tactics training; and (c) firearms training.

Each of these activities involves inherent risks, dangers and hazards. On behalf of myself and my child, I freely accept and fully assume these risks, dangers and hazards, including the possibility that my child may suffer injury or death, and that damage or loss of my property may result.

RELEASE OF LIABILITY, WAIVER OF CLAIMS AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT In consideration of my below named child being allowed to participate in the Student Challenge course (the “Course”), and by my signature below, I agree:

TO RELEASE AND SAVE HARMLESS AND INDEMNIFY each of the Vancouver Police Department and the City of Vancouver, their employees, agents, servants or representatives, and each of their successors and assigns (together “the Releasees”), from and against all claims, demands, actions or causes of action, and from all claims or demands whatever in law or in equity, in respect to death, injury, loss or damage to my child whatsoever and howsoever caused, arising out of, or in connection with my child taking part in the Course, notwithstanding that the same may have been contributed to or occasioned by any act or failure to act including, without limitation, the negligence of the Releasees, which may be brought against the Releasees by or on behalf of the below named child;

Guidelines: Social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, YouTube, personal texting, and others, are powerful tools of communication that have a significant impact on your personal reputation, as well as the reputation of the Vancouver Police Department and the Vancouver Police Department 2018 Student Challenge. Your parent/guardian and yourself must read and sign this contract acknowledging the responsibility as a member of the Vancouver Police Department 2018 Student Challenge to use social media within the guidelines set out in this contract. Please use the following guidelines when posting on Social Media sites.

1. I will not post or share information or photos about 2018 Student Challenge activities, participants, or instructors online in any form (including but not limited to: email, texts, websites or social media websites) without the approval of a 2018 Student Challenge Instructor. NOTE: Social media sites are actively monitored by the Vancouver Police Department and will be monitored throughout the Student Challenge, as well as before and after.

2. A Facebook page for the 2018 Student Challenge may be set up. The page should beprivatized and by invitation only. This Facebook page will be monitored by the 2018Student Challenge Instructors.

3. Cyberbullying is the willful bullying or harassment of another person or persons throughthe medium of social media. Any participant of the Vancouver Police DepartmentStudent Challenge who engages in any form of cyberbullying will be asked to leave theprogram immediately and will be required to return any Vancouver Police DepartmentStudent Challenge apparel.

Loon Lake Participant / Parent / Guardian Agreement & Acknowledgement of Risks

I, (participant's name or name of the parent/guardian of ), recognize that I/my dependent will be involved in indoor and outdoor activities at Loon Lake. Activities involved in this

trip may include but are not limited to hiking, orienteering, horseback riding, rock or wall climbing, archery, ropes courses, swimming, games and sports, and team building initiatives.

I understand that outdoor activities offer a wide variety of risks, hazards, and conditions to the participant with not all of them easily foreseeable, which could result in loss, damage, expense, or injury, including death These conditions may include, but are not limited to variable weather conditions including heat, cold, and wetness, steep or uneven

terrain, evacuation difficulties, darkness, animal and plant life, and use of equipment, including various types of safety gear. I understand that such risks simply cannot be eliminated without jeopardizing the essential qualities of the

activity.

I agree to accept and assume all of the risks existing in these activities, during this trip, that are in my control. I/my dependent understand that I/my dependent do not have to participate in the activities if I/they do not feel comfortable or confident in doing so. I certify that I/my dependent have/has no medical or physical conditions that could interfere with the safety of any activity. Otherwise, I am willing to assume all the costs and risks that may be created, directly or

indirectly, by any such condition.

I understand that Loon Lake will endeavor to instruct, protect and care for the well-being of myself/my dependent, including making decisions regarding the medical care of myself/my dependent. I also understand that, following all

trip activities, they will continue to maintain professional standards of behavior regarding myself/my dependent.

I understand that I/my dependent will need to uphold the standards of behaviour expected of them from Loon Lake and the organization with which they come (if any). I/(s)he will be expected to listen to and honor any request, suggestion,

advice, or rule given by the staff, employees of Loon Lake, and other supervising adults on the trip, with the understanding that this is in the best interest of all participants. I/(s)he will be expected to act with responsibility and

care for my/him/herself, the retreat facility, and for others on the trip.

I understand that the camp staff will take reasonable steps to prevent injuries to participants, and that some degree of risk is inherent in the nature of these activities and may occur without fault on the part of the participant or Loon Lake. By participating in this activity or allowing my dependent to participate, I am agreeing that the activities described above are

suitable for myself/my dependent, and that there is a risk of injury associated with these activities.

I have read this agreement at my leisure, and have understood its nature and its contents. I am aware that there are risks involved in this program, and I choose to participate in the program or allow my dependent to participate in the program and all activities involved in the program as s/he wishes.
