We were so fortunate to get through this epic flood with little damage to our school and families in our community. People have been giving through our “Hats for Hope” campaign to support our Coal Creek families who have been displaced. Patience has been shown with changing road conditions and bus schedules. Teachers have taken time to listen to the stories from children as this will be a memory of a lifetime. I consider myself a very transparent principal who informs the community of our celebrations as well as challenges. I believe our choir directed by Ted Carpenter is a huge area of pride. They just performed at the Rockies Game, and I heard they were fabulous. (Sorry to have missed the event as I was closing on a house in Minnesota.) Another celebration is the entire staff at Van Arsdale. This group is committed to you and your children. They form relationships with students and parents, take extra courses and professional development and provide enriching opportunities for their classes. I take immense pride in being their leader. 1:00 p.m.

For the Love of ReadingPTSA is excited to introduce a book club for kids The book club For the Love ofReading will meet monthly by grade level over lunch to discuss the selected book We will meet seven times throughout the year

This book club is not focused on reading ability OR the childrsquos reading level We aresimply hoping to foster a love of reading If your child would like to participate but isunable to read the book independently we would encourage an adult to read the bookaloud

Each group of children will be led by an adult facilitator The book needs to be readprior to the book club meeting We encourage children to come to the group with a copyof the book Sticky notes are a great way to mark certain passages or jot down notesabout thoughts as the child reads the book

The goals of the book club arebull Encourage readingbull Make reading a social experience as well as an individual activitybull Develop verbal expression of ideas and feelingsbull Encourage critical thinkingbull Develop the feeling of belonging to a group being respected and treating othergroup members with respectbull Bond with others of similar age or cross-generationalbull Time for reflectionbull A chance to see others in a new waybull An opportunity to see literature in a new way

Meeting dates will be the first Friday of the month October 4th November 1stDecember 6th February 7th March 7th April 4th and May 2nd
