QUANTUM the high-speed electronic roll feed with
unprecedented capabilities

QUANTUM - innovation
The best possible performance of a
high-speed press can only be
achieved if it is equipped with a high-
speed and accurate feeding system.
For this reason VAMCO invented the
Quantum: the world’s first and only
fully programmable, high-speed
electronic roll feed. VAMCO has
produced over 900 Quantum feeding
systems and is the proven leader in
high-speed feeding technology.
Through continuous research and
development, the Quantum remains
one of the fastest, most advanced
high performance feeding system
available today.
The Quantum Concept
Traditionally, high-speed presses
were equipped with mechanical cam
driven feeds in order to achieve high
production rates. Although, with the
onset and development of servo
technology, servo driven press
feeds became an integral part of
press room productivity. However,
the increase in flexibility gained with
servo driven equipment was offset
by their limitations in overall per-
formance and accuracy. Thus, the
use of conventional servo feeds was
restricted to low speed and low pre-
cision applications.
In 1994, VAMCO introduced the
Quantum; a feed designed to com-
bine the speed and performance of
a cam driven unit with the flexibility
and ease of use of a servo feed.
Equipped with two high perform-
ance custom built servo motors,
both the drive roll axis and the ma-
terial release axis are electronically
cammed to the press through a
press mounted resolver. This
closed loop feedback system coor-
dinates precise movements of the
feed with the position of the press.

Advanced Man Machine Interface (MMI)
The Quantum interface is powered
by a user friendly graphical operat-
ing system. From the MMI, the user
can program the following variables
for every job:
Feed Length Feed Angle Roll Separation Amount Roll Separation Angle Material Grip Force Material Thickness Once a job is optimized, this data is
stored in the Quantum’s job data-
base for later recall.

Operation & the Remote Pendant
Once a job is either programmed or
recalled from the database, the
complete operation of the feed unit
can be accomplished from the Re-
mote Pendant. This cast aluminum
device is robust enough to be
mounted directly to the press yet it is
light enough to remain portable.
The most frequently used feeding
functions easily performed from the
Remote Pendant include:
Select Mode of Operation Open/Close Feed Rolls Manual Jogging of Feed Rolls
(forward or reverse) Drive On Error Reset Emergency Stop

Digital Oscilloscope, Signature Analysis and Die Jam Anticipation & Correction
QUANTUM - advanced technology
Every Quantum is equipped with a
Digital Oscilloscope which records
and displays feed and system data.
This data can be displayed in “real
time” on the MMI for the operator’s
viewing. Drive roll torque and veloc-
ity information is displayed for each
advance of the stock material.
The Quantum’s Signature Analysis
tool can be used to analyze the
data acquired by the Digital Oscillo-
scope to detect and troubleshoot
many die related problems including
pulled slugs, incorrect pilot timing,
die jams, stock material camber,
equipment misalignment and many
other common stamping problems.
By learning the signature of a “good”
feeding cycle (Figure - 1, red curve),
adjustable tolerance bands (Figure -
1, green curves) can be created
around the known “good” signature.
This signature is then compared to
all future feed cycles. If at any time
during the feeding process the ac-
tual value of the signature violates
the user defined tolerance band
(Figure - 2), the feeding system im-
mediately takes a user defined cor-
rective action. Possible actions in-
clude an operator warning, top stop
of the press, or the immediate stop-
page of the press and feed system.
Furthermore, Vamco’s patented Die
Jam Anticipation & Correction
feature can be utilized to command
the press to stop while simultane-
ously pulling the stock material back
to the position where it was last
stamped. This ensures that the
stock material is placed in a safe
position for any subsequent die
strikes which occur while the press
is coming to a stop.
Press Shut Height Variation Compensation
VAMCO’s patented Press Shut
Height Variation Compensation
(PSHVC) technology solves the
problem of misformed parts that
result from changes in press shut
height due to dramatic changes in
press ram velocity. By allowing the
feed unit to be programmed to only
advance the stock material when
the actual press speed is above the
user defined press speed, the
Quantum feed unit will simply hold
the material in its current position,
on progression, ensuring that only
good parts are produced. This fea-
ture is available on any Quantum
feeding system but has proven to
be most useful in the production of
high precision electrical connectors.

Automatic Pilot Timing Set-Up
The most difficult and time consum-
ing aspect of the feed set-up proc-
ess is determining the exact press
angular position when the drive rolls
must separate to allow the pilot pins
to enter the stock material. Incorrect
separation timing reduces pilot pin
effectiveness and leads to acceler-
ated die wear, defective parts, costly
die crashes, and lost production.
The Quantum’s patented Automatic
Pilot Timing Set-Up software auto-
mates this once tedious task by
actually sensing the pilot pin entry
into the stock material. This elimi-
nates hours of time wasted during
feed set-up as well as the possibility
of any release timing set-up error.
advanced technology - QUANTUM
The Quantum was designed to
withstand the vibration of the most
severe stamping applications.
Each feed unit is engineered to
mount directly to the press ensuring
the highest possible feeding accu-
racy.
Typical applications include:
Electric Motor & Transformer Laminations
Single & Multiple Piece Electri-cal Connectors
Electrical Switches Razor Blades Coin Blanks Lead Acid Battery Grids Perforating Applications Automotive Chain & Power

QUANTUM - advanced applications
By eliminating the power transmis-
sion components of mechanical
feeds, the Quantum feeding system
is ideal for applications that require
multiple feed units.
The Quantum-C45 Double Feed
System is ideally suited for feeding
stock material into tools that re-
quire multiple strips. As shown in
Figure - 3, a single Quantum Con-
troller coordinates the motion of two
independent feed units, each
mounted on a bracket with both
vertical and lateral adjustment. The
unique cantilever roll design allows
the distance between the parallel
strips to be varied from 0 mm to the
maximum permitted by the press
opening.
A further advantage of the cantile-
ver roll design is the ability to
quickly interchange feed rolls for
the processing of preformed stock
material.
As shown in Figure - 4, the Quantum
Push/Pull Feed System is ideal for
feeding very soft materials including
lead or plastics. Again, the use of a
single Quantum Controller ensures the
coordinated feed roll motion necessary
to maintain constant tension in the
stock material as it advances across
the die.

Tandem Feed System (Rotor/Stator Laminations)
Tandem press production lines (Figure -
6) are commonly used when the bed
length of a stamping press is not large
enough to stamp both the rotor and the
stator of an electric motor in the same
die. This is an ideal application for the
Quantum feeding system as two feed
units can be configured with different
drive roll widths ensuring that the drive
rolls of the second feed unit completely
covers the blank diameter of the first
operation. Furthermore, both feed units
can be controlled from a single Quantum
Controller allowing for easier set-up and
overall system monitoring.
advanced applications - QUANTUM
The Quantum feed system can be con-
figured to handle coiled stock material up
to 1550 mm wide. Despite the massive
size of this machine, the Quantum - 1550
(Figure - 5) still delivers coiled stock ma-
terial up to 90 meters per minute. Even
at this high production rate, the Quantum
maintains the accuracy required for ap-
plications without pilot pins. Since the
Quantum feed unit requires no mechani-
cal power takeoff from the press, it can
be mounted on a pivoting bracket to al-
low quick and easy access to the die.
