  • VAM EIS

VAM EIShigh-torque connections are fullyintermateable with API drill pipe connections.

    VAM EIS is a high-torque

    connection that is fully

    intermateable with API connections

    but incorporates a double-shoulder

    tool joint design. As additional

torque is applied, the pin nose

    makes contact with the internal

High-Grade Material forLighter and Stronger Solutions

Complex drilling environments, including ultra-deep and extendedreach wells, deep offshore orhigh-temperature and high-pressureconditions, are a real challenge fordrilling contractors and operators. For the most challenging drillingprojects, VAM Drilling hasdeveloped high-strength gradesincluding VM-140 DP, VM-150 DPand VM-165 DP.

VAM Drilling guarantees thesuperior mechanical properties ofits steel alloys through proprietarychemistry, strict quality proceduresand true vertical integration fromsteel making to drill pipe heattreatment and dedicatedmanufacturing process controls.

High-strength grades are idealfor the lighter drill pipes requiredto minimize torque and drag inultra-extended reach wells. Byusing high-strength material toreduce tube body wall thickness, lighter drill pipe joints can bemanufactured without compromis-ing mechanical performance.Reducing wall thickness alsoimproves hydraulic programs, making it easier to reach drillingtargets efficiently.

When stronger tubulars are neededfor ultra-deep or landing stringapplications, high-grade materialsoffer additional tensile capacity ascompared to API grades.

content of phosphorus and sulfur andalso a reduced content of inclusionand oxides increases the toleranceto damage and prevents fatiguecrack initiation.

This process control (micro alloyingaddition in the steel and heattreatment control) can successfullylower the transition temperature.Proprietary arctic grades already existfor temperatures as low as 40C.However, for high-strength drill pipe itis necessary to meet the drilling loadsin arctic conditions with temperaturesas low as 60C. VAM Drilling is atthe forefront of developing solutionsfor these types of environments.

    Maximizing Safety and

    Performance in Low-

    Temperature Environments

Arctic drilling is one of the most vividexamples of how the oil and gasindustry is called upon to adapt toever-increasing demand for energyresources. This evolution has driventhe industry to develop more suitabledrill string solutions adapted toextreme conditions, including arcticenvironments.

The need for such drill pipe wastriggered by the wells topology(mainly Eastern Europe, CIS, Alaskaand Canadian markets) where thefracture toughness behavior of drillpipe at temperatures as low as 60C(76F) has to be controlled andguaranteed. The underlying issuebehind this constraint is not relatedto the service temperature of thesetubulars, but instead to potentialdamage during ground transportationand handling in the arctic permafrost.Steel grade ductility decreasesdramatically below a certain temp-erature called transition temperature. The transition temperature is specificto the metallurgy and grade of steel. When the transition temperature ofthe steel grade is too high, the steelcan become brittle even at 20C.Therefore, it is desirable to use steelwith very low transition temperature, which is typically difficult to achievefor high-strength steel. Nevertheless, the transition temperature can beimproved by controlling the way thesteel is manufactured. In particular, the use of carbon steel with a low
