Background to HPE

Facilities

HPE Head Office is in Kya Sand, Randburg where the majority of the administration is based and is also home to the HPE drill manufacturing segment of the business. Our Krugersdorp based workshop is where the manufacturing of mechanised equipment viz drill rigs, loaders, power packs, etc., takes place as well as our high pressure valve range.

Profile

Design and engineering

The HPE Innovation Team, in collaboration with the client, will investigate the project requirements and turn the problem

into an innovative and workable solution. By sourcing from the existing HPE product range and utilizing the latest Solid

Works computer software, 3D printing technology, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Finite Element Analysis etc., the team

will find a safe workable solution to the customer’s needs. The whole HPE product range is designed in house by our team

of engineers and CAD office.

Product and solution development

Ongoing research and development ensures that the company’s product range remains at the forefront of hydropower

technology. A dedicated research and test facility enables HPE to continually strive towards new solutions to the industry’s

demands for enhanced performance and safety.

Implementation

The objective of this team is the transfer of knowledge and skills to the end user which is fundamental for the sustainable

success of any new technology. The team consists of qualified instructors who are NQA certified trainers and experts who

interact with the users daily.

Valves

The HPE valve range covers a broad spectrum of requirements and is mainly used in underground applications where the valves are exposed to high pressures, arduous conditions in terms of the corrosive environment and dirty contaminated water.

Pump Control Valve (Hydrologic Control Actuator)

Purpose

To protect pumps and pipelines against any damage that may result from start/stop or flow surging caused by an electrical tripout by minimizing the pressure surges (water hammer) by slowly increasing or decreasing the velocity of the water.

Features

• Throttles and maintains the pump pressure when the downstream column is empty or partially full

• Throttles the pump outlet when the pump is stopped to prevent water hammer

• High cavitation resistance due to poppet and cage design

• Stainless steel and bronze internals with UHMWPE seals and bearings

Pump Control Valve (Electric Control Actuator)

Purpose

Manual Isolation Valve

Purpose

To manually isolate flow at high pressure but with a low hand wheel force as well as the ability to throttle flow for extended periods of time.

Features

• Very low hand wheel force due to ‘servo assisted’ design

• Can be throttled for an extended period of time e.g. repeated draining of a column

Surge Relief Valve

Purpose

To open rapidly when the pressure in a pipeline reaches a pre-set limit, thereby eliminating excessive pressure surges or over pressurization.

Non Return Valve

Purpose

To minimize pipeline pulses (water hammer), generated by a pump trip out, by closing rapidly in the reverse flow direction. It is mainly used with Pump Control Valves in mine dewatering applications.

Purpose

To destroy pressure energy in fluids by a finite desired amount.

Surge Anticipation Valve System

Purpose

The Surge Anticipation Valve (SAV) is designed to prevent pressure surges above the steady state pumping pressure in the event of a pump trip out, entirely by mechanical means, thus eliminating the need for electrical systems that require a battery UPS back-up.

Features

• Soft ‘catch’ action of the valve system minimizes pressure surges due to fluid velocity changes

• Simple mechanical design eliminates the need for instrumentation and back-up electrical power supplies

• The SAV incorporates an isolation valve that allows maintenance of the Surge Relief Valve (SRV) without draining the column

• The SAV operation can be tested with no risk of generating pressure surges by simulating a column pressure drop when the pumps are not operating. This allows the opening and closing times and pilot pressure to be set and checked. The SAV will open when the pilot set pressure is reached, the SRVs will dump water and then the SAV will close. This can be done regularly as part of planned maintenance

Simulation of system after a trip - A

The graph below shows how a 34 bar pressure surge, caused by a pump/motor trip out, is reduced. This was conducted with three different charge pressures in the Surge Relief Valve nitrogen chamber. The lowest gas charge pressure (100 bar) produces the lowest peak pressure.

Excess Flow Control Valve (Safety Isolation High Pressure)

Purpose

To shut off in the event of an excess flow condition resulting from a pipe burst or in circumstances where maximum flow rates need to be controlled. This must be done without causing a pressure surge (water hammer) in the process. The trip mode is in 2 stages – initially very rapid to prevent runaway flow, then slowly to give a soft shut off. The trip flow is normally set at 35% above the working flow rate.

Excess Flow Control Valve (Safety Isolation Low Pressure)

Purpose

To shut off in the event of an excess flow condition caused by pipeline failure or excess consumption from downstream operations. This must be done without causing a pressure surge (water hammer) in the process. The valve can be manually or hydraulically (water pressure signal) closed and then reopened without an excess flow condition occurring. The trip flow is set at 35% above the working flow rate.

• Shuts off flow in a pipeline when closing trigger is activated

• Valve will close when flow rate exceeds a preset limit

• When opened by activating the opening trigger, the pipe line downstream is filled without causing an excess flow condition during the process

Turbine Control Valve

Purpose

To achieve rapid closure followed by slow shut off on turbine nozzle pipelines. This minimizes pressure surges (i.e. water hammer) and prevents pelton wheel turbines from over speeding in the event of electrical load loss.

• A single low voltage electric ‘on’ signal will open the valve

• Removal of the signal through whatever cause will result in immediate and controlled closure of the valve

Purpose

To control the level of water in underground dams. The valve is typically coupled to a manual isolation valve and an energy dissipator to form a system which will maintain dam water levels.

Pressure Reducing Valve

Purpose

Pressure Ratio Valves accurately maintain a set ratio between upstream and downstream pressures.

Pressure Regulating Valves accurately maintain a constant preset downstream pressure, or the upstream pressure changes rapidly, with controlled response designed to ensure stability and minimal line surging when the downstream flow changes rapidly.

• Downstream pressure can be regulated from 8 bar to 200 bar • High cavitation resistance due to poppet and cage design

• Can be maintained in line • Operation at differential pressures of up to 100 bar

• Stainless steel and bronze internals with UHMWPE seals and bearings • High sealing integrity and dirt tolerance

Pressure Reducing Station (PRS)

Pressure Reducing Stations typically consist of one duty and one standby leg. Each leg will comprise of an Inlet Isolation Valve, Strainer, Pressure Reducing Valve and Outlet Isolation Valve. A Surge Relief Valve is typically installed on the common downstream line.

Optional extras would include Safety Isolation Valves and Compensators. The Manual Isolation Valves may also be fitted with electric actuators to allow remote operation.

The PRS pipework is hot dip galvanised with flanges and face to face dimensions to customer specifications.

Stations are rated up to 250 bar (max) working pressure and up to 300NB in size.

Descaler Valve

Purpose

To supply high pressure water for the descaling of rolling mill products in the steelworks industry. The valve has the characteristic in that it first fills the descaler manifold before it fully opens to eliminate water hammer in a partially empty descaler system which occurs during the waiting period.

• Throttles and maintains the pressure when the downstream manifold is empty

• Opening and closing of the main poppet is done in 2 stages with both stages controlled over a certain time to prevent water hammer

• Air operated actuator

• Stainless steel and bronze internals with UHMWPE seals and bearings

• Cast steel body (galvanised body optional)

Backfill Diverter Valve (Slurry)

Purpose

To divert the flow of backfill material from one point of placement to another. Furthermore, to ensure that the placed backfill material is not diluted or washed away by the flush water, the valve can be switched to divert flushing water away from the placement point at the end of a backfill placement cycle.

• Port for drain valve to indicate when flush water reaches the valve

• The ‘flip-flop’ principle prevents the valve from being in the middle position so as to avoid operator injury when it flips under full flow conditions

80NB, 100NB, 150NB

• Valve can be completely disassembled if backfill sets

• Smooth passages for cleaning purposes and lowest friction losses

• Electrically actuated directional control under no load

• Ports for automated water flushing options which keep the internals clean

• Highly durable UHMWPE seals
