ValUes-in-actionThe Swiss Values-In-Action Programme (VIAP), continues to (i) deliver the desired student outcomes, (ii) generate positive impact on the beneficiaries and (iii) forge sustainable and mutually-benefitting partnerships between Swiss Cottage Secondary School and our community partners, both local and international.
It has been refined over the years to become a key
lever to develop student character, leadership and spirit for volunteering. With a two-tiered whole-school approach to deliver the programme since 2008, (1) all students experience VIA through diversified cohort programmes over the years as well as (2) student-directed VIA.
The VIA curriculum is delivered through the “Awareness-Action-Advocacy” (3A) learning framework to ensure that our students gain the essential knowledge, skills, experience, values and attitudes for them to continue VIA beyond school.
stUdent leadershiPAs part of the TLP to develop Thoughtful Leadership in our students, the Swiss SLP strengthens our students’ character development with leadership knowledge, and through leadership training and practice. Much of leadership is demonstrated through Class Committees, CCA and Student Council platforms.
Increasingly, the SLP is tuned to provide more opportunities for our students to take the lead in VIA or social action projects as well as to imbue our students with a leadership attitude to be transformational so as to bring about positive influence and change through community service and volunteerism.
character as the centre and coMPetencies as the enabler oF leadershiPTLP is set to propel the school towards its direction of TL because we enjoy the pre-requisites of strong Instructional and Student Development Programmes that develop intellectual and character excellence in our students. May our students lead themselves and others to bring about meaningful and sustainable change to the community!
swiss thoughtful leadership niche ProgrammeIn 2013, the integrated Total Curriculum Approach brought together the endorsement from MOE for the Swiss Thoughtful Leadership Niche Programme (TLP) at the end of 2013. The Swiss TLP encompasses glocal Perspectives, Values-in-action and Student leadership programmes. The TLP was positioned as Swiss Cottage’s flagship niche programme to develop thoughtful leadership in our students as well the school’s Learning for Life Programme.
The year 2013 was a year of preparation in setting the blue print for the Total Curriculum development over the next six years with TLP as a catalyst to propel students towards the TL journey. Clusters of staff came together to develop the TLP programmes and to chart a six-year action plan.
thoughtful leadership
glocal PerspectivesGlocal Perspectives (GP) is an anchor Thinking Programme developed with the aim of developing our students to think ethically, positively (in a forward-looking manner) and be aware of their global/local contexts.
To be conducted through weekly 1-hour lessons, GP would be a springboard for students to analyse the authentic world environment through collaborative learning in order to be aware, act for and advocate relevant change in society, i.e., service learning. A range of topics will be explored through phases – (i) the familiar and personal understanding, (ii) the familiar but less personal local views (iii) the less familiar and less personal global stand-points – before arriving at an informed and locally rooted personal perspective.
The programme would be piloted in 2014 among the Sec 1 Express cohort. The Sec 1 Normal Academic and Technical students would experience a taste of GP during the Integrated Learning Week that would be planned in Term 2 Week 1 of 2014 to bring a heightened focus on the Total Curriculum Experience.

In June 2012, Swiss Cottage started our 50th Anniversary celebrations with the
Swiss Carnival. The carnival not only strengthened the ties between the Swiss
family and the community, we raised funds to support our needy students and
the setup of the Swiss Heritage Gallery. In April 2013, we held a successful
Homecoming dinner with more than 300 Swiss Alumni and former staff gracing the
event to reconnect with their friends and the School.
We have also published two Swiss Books in 2012 and 2013. The Swiss Book
One “Our Joy, Our Pride” recorded the personal accounts of our illustrious alumni
on how they have benefitted from Swiss. The Swiss Book Two “Blaze a Path of
Glory” is a valuable pictorial collection archiving the glorious moments, peaks of
excellence and fond memories over the 50 years of the school’s history.
On 9 November 2013, the Swiss Alumni came together for another grand reunion
to witness the opening of the Swiss Heritage Gallery, the launch the Swiss Book
Two and a brand new Swiss Website.
Our Swiss Heritage Gallery showcases the legacy of Swiss and how she has
nurtured her students for 50 years. It includes the Thoughtful Leader Board which
features three Swiss winners of the Lee Kuan Yew Award for All-Round Excellence
and two Swiss Outstanding Youth in Education Award winners. We want to inspire
our students to develop themselves to their fullest potential and our teachers to be
the best student nurturer they can be.
Moving forward, Swiss Cottage devotes herself to nurturing every student to be a
Thoughtful Leader. The revamped Swiss Website features the school’s new vision
and our plans to develop our students as Thoughtful Leaders who Think, Care and
Lead with P.R.I.D.E.

swiss spirit at the chingayMarking the close of Chinese New Year at the end of February 2013, Swiss Cottage Secondary School participated in the Chingay Parade 2013 and performed for the President, the Prime Minister and Singapore for the first time. The 300 strong ukelele contingent consisted of the Secondary one cohort of 2013, led by the Swiss Chinese Orchestra. Through this event the students got to experience the SWISS P.R.I.D.E. values and appreciated the importance of building the Swiss identity, by representing the School at the the national level.
Though new to the school, the Secondary One students have quickly fostered positive relationships with their fellow classmates in the cohort during the hours of training and performance and have learnt how to play the ukelele as a musical enrichment from the Swiss Chinese Orchestra in two months. The end result was an impressive spectacle.
Not only did the event involve the Secondary One and the Swiss Chinese Orchestra, the School Management, the Swiss teachers, the participants’ parents and the Parents’ Support Group were all there to support the students at the parade. While several Swiss Chinese Orchestra students highlighted in their reflection that the experience was “memorable and meaningful”, the Secondary One students in the contigent cited that the opportunity to bond and experience something outside of the curriculum with their new classmates was priceless. All of them agreed that being there in the heart of the action was beyond words. They felt proud when the name of the School was announced and they performed their item with passion and pride. Our students really demonstrated the Swiss spirit of ‘Going far, Going together’!

partnerships
The home, school and community have a shared goal to create an environment that best supports the child’s learning and development. The school continually seeks to build a collaborative culture of partnership with parents, alumni and SAC to achieve the shared goal of nurturing Thoughtful Leaders in our students.
school advisory committeeThe School Advisory Committee (SAC) is our key partner who plays an important advisory role to the school. It comprises grassroots leaders, parents and alumni. The SAC members work closely with the principal and give their strong support to enhance school development and programmes for student learning and welfare.
Parent support groupParents are the key navigators and nurturers of a child’s growth. The close partnership between parents and the school will lead to the parents’ better understanding of their children’s learning experience in school and provision of the necessary family care, support and reinforcement at home. This will in turn bring out the best in their children and our students. This year, the PSG has sustained the annual Dads for Life event; organised Breakfast or Coffee with Principal sessions, family bonding and healthy lifestyle events; and supported school events like Swiss Cross-country, Study Nite, Swiss Homecoming Dinner and Swiss Open House.

alumniThis year marks a significant year for the school alumni as the school celebrates 50 years of Swiss history. The Swiss Homecoming Dinner facilitated the strengthening of ties between the alumni and the school. The Swiss Cottage Secondary School Alumni has also contributed to the school in various ways this year - by having alumni speakers during its Career Talk; contributing to a
gift donations to teachers during Teachers’ Day and students during their Study Nite; and a touch screen television for the Swiss Heritage Gallery. The Alumni will also embark on a new journey in 2014 as they officially register themselves with the Registrar of Societies to be ‘The Swiss Cottage Secondary School Alumni Association’.

Professional development In our journey towards Thoughtful Leadership, the teaching staff revisited 3 important guiding principles to ensure that every lesson was a good lesson; every staff and student was well cared for and every staff learn and reflect. Teachers were encouraged to plan and implement engaging subject-based lessons which infused values and the 21st century competencies. Teaching strategies, which included modelling, observation, pedagogy, learning experience, reflection and extension of learning (MOPLoRE), were employed to enhance the students’ learning experiences. While the School Management Committee learnt how to express their ideas of Thoughtful Leadership through various art works at an art gallery, the support staff went on a fun learning journey at the River Safari. The climax of the year was our Staff Day: ‘Towards Excellence and Transformation’
held at the Jurong Bird Park where all the staff members were encouraged to be innovative in their thinking and practices. All were engaged in activities which promoted creativity, collaboration and communication, which were essential qualities to help us to make progress in our vision of building Thoughtful Leaders.

lee kuan yew awardSwiss Third Recipient of the Lee Kuan Yew Award for All-Round Excellence
Calvin Voo Jun Jie (Class of 2012, 4T1)
Calvin was Swiss Cottage’s third recipient of the Lee Kuan Yew Award for All-Round Excellence. Calvin was a humble servant leader who had always rendered his service with a smile. He was an invaluable member of the AVA/IT crew of the school who came up with innovative ICT ideas to support the school’s daily administrative operations and major events. In 2012, he initiated and led a ‘Dare to Try’ class project to bring a group of twenty Cambodian children for a 5-days-4-nights learning journey to Singapore. As an alumnus of the school, he continued to serve Swiss Cottage as a mentor to his junior AVA/IT crew during major school events, like the Secondary One Orientation.

total defence day & international Friendship day
racial harmony day
will you Stand with Me
The focus of the Total Defence Day commemoration 2013 was on the Spirit of Resilience, Empathy and Unity that Singaporeans displayed during the WWII period. Students participated in the specially prepared CME packages, designed to encourage thinking on issues such as a Singaporean’s duty to defend the nation through actions like sharing limited resources during the war period. Re-living history through memoirs and videos, students learn to appreciate the peace and stability they are enjoying.
the world in Singapore
2013 International Friendship Day saw strong collaboration between the Citizenship Committee, the English Department and Humanities Department. Credits go to the teachers who helped to prepare selected Sec 3 students for a debate on the effectiveness of ASEAN which made the afternoon assembly programme a meaningful and engaging experience for the Upper Secondary Cohort.
The event also provided the Swiss Family with the opportunity to demonstrate empathy and contribute to the society via the first ever in-house blood donation drive, conducted in collaboration with the Singapore Red Cross Society.
Celebrating Singapore!
The highlight for 2013 Racial Harmony Day Commemoration was the student-led language learning activity that was coordinated by the Citizenship Representatives. Students were taught to speak the various Mother Tongue languages by their peers, opening themselves to more opportunities to communicate with friends of a different race.
Not forgetting the students’ favourite section of the commemoration: to don themselves in the ethnic costumes.

Many Stories… one SingaporeWhile continuing the tradition of commemorating our Nation’s birthday with a marching parade that showcased the Swiss Uniform Groups’ love for their nation, the thoughtful student leaders also performed the Fancy Drill which added a splash of youthfulness to the event. The Swiss Drama Club students played their part by writing a play set on a very familiar HDB scene to highlight this year’s National Day theme. The day was made even more memorable with the School Leaders leading everyone in the sing-along sessions, singing our favourite National Day songs like ‘Home’ and ‘Stand Up For Singapore’.
