CONTENTS
In Year 7 and 8, students have 25 learning hours per week, divided according to the chart below. Students study an integrated
Humanitiesoption,‘Explore’,inYear7whichhasastrongemphasisonliteracyandcoreHumanitiesknowledgeandskills.The
ArtssubjectsandDesignTechnology/Computingaretaughtusingacarouselmodelwherestudentsspecialiseinasubjectfor6-8
weeksatatime.PSHCEandCharacterEducationaretaughtthroughdiscrete‘SEARCH’dayswhichtakeplaceonahalf-termlybasis.
WeencourageallFoundationStagestudents toselect2-3afterschoolenrichmentactivitiesorclubswhichrun from3.10pm-
4.10pmeachdayandwhichcomplementthecorecurriculumoffer.Wealsohavehighexpectationsofourstudentsintermsof
HomeLearning,whichisanessentialpartofdevelopingacultureofscholarlyexcellence,wherestudentshavetheself-discipline
andmotivationtobeabletostudyindependently.Thesearecriticallearninghabitstoformearlysothatstudentsarewellprepared
forthedemandsofpublicexaminationlateron.
HOURS PER WEEKThisbookletisdesignedtogiveyoudetailedinformationaboutthecurriculumyourchildwillstudyinYears7and8,the
FoundationStage.DuringYear8,allstudentsatHeartlandsHighSchoolmakedecisionsaboutwhichsubjectstheywishto
continuestudyinguptoGCSElevel.This‘optionsprocess’allowsthemtospecialiseinthecurriculumareastheyprefermost
whilstretainingabroadandbalancedcurriculumwhichisatthecoreofoureducationaloffer.
OurCoreCurriculumObjectivesare:
• Allstudents,irrespectiveofbackgroundorpriorattainment,areenabledtomakeoutstanding,acceleratedprogressacross
the curriculum.
