The completion of this CPD short course supports the development of leadership and evidence, research and development skills in order to promote the value of occupation. Learning outcomes: The combined learning outcomes for the three components include:

To effectively communicate key messages within and about your service Generate actions to get involved in the Occupational therapy: improving lives, saving
money campaign to promote your service and new initiatives. To gain experience of articulating key messages to others To apply the skills and knowledge gained from practicing your key messages within the

Occupational therapy: Improving Lives, Saving Money The Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) started a campaign in 2015 to raise awareness of the profession with stakeholders across all four UK nations. Based on best practice examples six reports have been published demonstrating how occupational therapy improves peoples’ lives while also saving money for the public purse. The reports identify from the best practice examples the elements of service delivery that ensure most effective use of occupational therapy expertise. To this end, recommendations are made for commissioners, managers and providers outlining the most effective deployment of the occupational therapy workforce, within hospital services, the community and in mental health. The campaign has enabled RCOT to reach a wide variety of national stakeholders, from key politicians to well-renown think tanks to demonstrate the value of the profession in delivering health and care across the system in the 21st Century. campaign with data impact examples have been able to raise the profile of their service within their organisation and outside with local media and stakeholders. This course gives you the tools to be able to use data to influence stakeholders and promote your service using a data impact example (see CPD short course ‘Producing a data impact example for your service’). Developing key messages is a valuable skill. Learning how to influence with your key messages can raise the profile of your service within your organisation and in the wider system. This course with support you to identify key messages explaining what your service does simply and succinctly to stakeholders and, also, identify suitable opportunities to raise the profile of your service. Three years into the campaign RCOT has developed overarching recommendations based on common themes from the reports which are applicable across the profession. These are: The RCOT campaign Occupational Therapy – Improving Lives Saving Money is making the case that to empower people to manage their health and wellbeing, occupational therapists should be deployed across the health and care system to:
1. Intervene early within primary care
2. Embed personalised care through training and supervising others
3. Develop wider partnerships to further innovation
4. Expand therapy-led services
On completion of all three components you are asked to identify three key learning points to inform your future practice. A certificate is available at the end of this workbook. This session is designed to be completed in a group to enhance debate and peer-learning although it is possible to adapt it to working as an individual. In total it should take about two and a half hours although more time may be required to complete the suggested further reading and follow up the links to other resources.
