Regional Update By Paula McDonald

Urgent: the WE Local San Jose conference registration is open and space is limited to 400! All Region A members should have received an email from SWE headquarters with an active link to register. The conference will be held February 24-26, 2017 at the San Jose Marriott, with technical tours being offered one day prior on February 23, 2016. For more information, visit welocal.swe.org or email [email protected].

Life’s Variable, SWE is Your Constant: I was pleased and privileged to represent our Section in Philadelphia, where our annual conference broke all previous records and expectations with over 11,000 attendees! Development sessions were robust and addressed a wide range of common issues and goals across our membership. Personally, I enjoyed attending sessions on mid-career level issues and experiences.

A Region A meeting was held in Philadelphia during the annual conference. As a reminder, the Region A Facebook page is helpful for the most current and detailed information on events, or also our region website: http://regiona.swe.org/.

Some Pass-downs:

x Region Award nominations are due December 15, 2016, and will be presented at WeLocal in February. The Region Awards process is designed to reflect similar evaluation criteria as the

National awards. Please contact me if you are interested in submitting an award nomination.

x SWE Star Photo Contest: photos are due May 31st, 2017. Let’s get creative and get some fun photos of our SWE Star at our events! Email to [email protected]

x A region social event has been planned for May 19-21st in Sonoma; a house there has been rented to attend local wine tasting. More details to follow soon…

x Governance: Pearl Yamaguchi gave an overview of the latest plans for the restructuring effort. It is planned to dissolve the Regions by the end of FY18. SWE membership is now over 35,000 members, worldwide!

As we drive on through this busy time of year that manages to hit us from every possible direction and holiday season, I want to wish everyone peace and glad tidings! Thank you for all you do in SWE and your careers to drive our mission forward. We have so much to be proud of and thankful for.

New Member Profile TALINA BARAJAS

Talina Barajas received her BS in Civil Engineering in 2008 from Cal Poly Pomona and her MS in Architectural Engineering from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 2013. After earning her BS, she had a 1-year internship with Riverside County Transportation & Land Management Agency. She was involved in a local construction project to replace the Miles Avenue Bridge in Indio, which she especially enjoyed because it was right behind the house where she grew up. Talina's masters thesis weighed the financial and environmental benefits of higher performance structures, which go beyond the required standards and are designed to sustain bigger earthquakes. She looked at a new building at California State University East Bay and redesigned it from top to bottom based on existing code and then again using more extensive requirements. She compared the financial estimates and carbon footprints of each design. She concluded that the higher performance design was more expensive but the expected life for that material (steel rather than concrete) was worth the investment; the structure would last longer and have a smaller carbon

footprint. After completing her MS coursework in June 2012, Talina went to work as a design engineer for Stork Wolf & Associates, a structural engineering firm specializing in small commercial buildings and high-end residential structures. After a little more than a year, she moved to Alta Vista Solutions in Sacramento, where she worked on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and high speed rail projects in California, Colorado and Wyoming. In September 2016, Talina started a new job at Unico Engineering as a project engineer working on Construction Package 4 of the California High Speed Rail project. This is the southernmost segment, with the first 3 segments already under construction. Talina is currently in the verification and validation phase of the project, which involves intense quality control to make sure the specifications comply with all the requirements. Once construction begins in March 2017, she will be in the field to oversee the work. Talina wasn’t involved much in SWE in college, but now as a professional, something kept nagging at her to get involved and give back to the community. She taught a course in the spring of 2015 in Sacramento State’s Civil Engineering Dept., and she mentors at the local high school through CREATE Mentor. She also took part in the recent SWE SVS speed mentoring event at Sac State, which she learned about on our website. She said she definitely wants to help more with the SWE SVS Outreach Program. In her spare time, Talina enjoys reading, competitive power lifting, and gardening. Welcome to SWE Sac Valley, Talina!

2. Friday Speaker Series guest speakers are needed throughout the school year. Students gather in the career center to listen to the guest speaker presentation regarding their career or particular industry sector. There is generally one speaker for each date. The guest speaker talks consist of a 10-15 minute presentation followed by a 10 minute Q&A. Presentations may include PowerPoint, video, and/or show & tell objects. Related industry swag is acceptable and enjoyable for students. You can find the Friday Speaker Series dates on the SES web site school calendar:
