Wow! One semester down in Pre-k! It has flown by! These
kiddos will be in kindergarten before you know it. We had so
much holiday fun the last six weeks. We learned about the Indians, Pilgrims, and the
first Thanksgiving. We even had an Indian parade around the school. The Christmas
season was full of good times and lots of activities. Polar Express Pajama Day was the
best! Thank you, families, for the fun Christmas parties. I am starting to see so much
progress and maturity in this group of kids. It is my favorite part of this job! We are
starting some good things during this second half of the year. Let's keep up the great
work!
Pre-K
We hope everyone had a restful Christmas Break! Kindergarten jumped into January with a
unit on Martin Luther King, Jr. and a snowman unit. We've also enjoyed a book study on The
Mitten by Jan Brett. Parents, don't forget to read the Monthly Newsletter in your child's
folder, as well as completing the daily homework.
Page 7 Valley View Elementary
Kindergarten had a lot of fun watching The Polar Express and drinking hot chocolate.
It's hard to believe that another 6-weeks has finished. We were busy
preparing for the holidays. We created many projects to help with our
celebrations. Our students enjoyed "Eagle Craft Day." Everyone made
an ornament, enjoyed a holiday movie, and visited with Iggy the Eagle!
Please continue to work with your student on their homework and high
frequency words. We will administer the mid-year TPRI in January to
measure reading progress. We are looking forward to wonderful second
semester!
Christmas party fun!

2017 is off to a great start! In Math, we have been
practicing subtraction and counting money. Keep
practicing those skills at home! In Science, we have
studied animals of the arctic as well as the people and
environment. The students created a project about their
learning. For Social Studies, we learned about Martin
Luther King, Jr. Our third six weeks BASH was a "cool"
trip to Dairy Queen for frozen treats.

In Health we learned about fire safety and developed escape
plans for our homes. Students also learned about ways to
prevent diseases. This six weeks we are talking about good
nutrition and how to take care of ourselves by eating healthy
foods.
In Social Studies, we are learning
about land and water. We have
identified the 7 continents of the
world and the major oceans. We are
also learning how the U.S. is divided
into 5 regions and how geographers
group these regions based on their
location and land forms they share.
In Science we learned about force and motion
and how simple machines affect the way we
do work. The students designed balloon cars
and tested them to see how far they would
go. We are now exploring the Solar System.
We have learned about the layers of the sun
and the phases of the moon. Students will be
able to learn about the planets as they work
on models of the Solar System.
More fun Christmas parties!
Page Valley View Elementary
The third six-weeks was great in the 4th grade! We learned
how to add and subtract decimals, interpret remainders, and
decipher input/output tables. Students had so much fun cre-
ating interesting and detailed sentences with the “Ba-Da-
Bing” and “Show Don’t Tell” writing techniques! In Science,
the kids were excited to learn about the water cycle and food
chains and how they affect our ecosystem. They also learned
about the Early Texans in Social Studies. Along with learning
how our culture was shaped, students learned about the major
Texas rivers that shaped our land. We finished the six-weeks
with fun-filled, sugar-laden, joyous
Christmas parties!

PTO News
If you have any questions, please ask any one of us.
Thanks for all you do to support our school!
Kristi Tarrant, PTO President
Melinda Milner, Vice President
Chelena Minhinnett, Secretary
Lacee Jones, Treasurer
Heather Lybbert, Volunteer Coordinator
Cathy Ritchey, Reporter
Stephanie Stewart, Box Top Coordinator
The PTO had a busy six weeks! Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make both Christmas
movie day and Christmas craft day big successes. The personalized eagle-themed Christmas
ornaments turned out very cute. We also sponsored a “Souper” bowl themed luncheon for the
teachers in January. We appreciated everyone who made all of the yummy treats.
Thanks to your generous support, the PTO was able to purchase
wi-fi access for part of the school. This will help the students
access all sorts of educational programs, including the BrainPOP
program we bought for the fourth grade. Mr. Shelburne received
student headphones to use in his new computer lab and Mrs.
Spragg really appreciates her new classroom printer.
Interested in becoming a PTO officer? The
positions of Secretary and Treasurer will be
open next year. Elections will be toward the
end of the current school year. Please see
any of the PTO officers for details and to
pick up a nomination form!
