VALLEY of COOS BAY

INTRODUCTION

The Valley of Coos Bay, one of the older Valleys in

this Orient, is numher four in order of Lodge of Perfection

date.

Organized Freemasonry began in this region of the Ore­

gon Coast with the Chartering of Blanco Lodge at Marshfield

June 21, 18 70. Blanco Lodge ff48 is now in Coos Bay , the name

of the city having been changed from Marshfield to Coos P.ay

in 1944. This region is r.rand Lodge ~istrict #24 which in­

cludes four other Lodges: Chadwick Lodge #68 in roquille

[Chartered June 14, 1876]; Myrtle Lodge f/:78 in '1yrtle Point

[Chartered .June 13, 1883] ; Bandon T~odge !I 130 ~ in Bandon [Char­

tered June 14, 194 7; and North Bend Lodge #140 in ~Torth Bend

[Chartered June 17, 1909].

A. Many of the records and minutes of the early days of

Marshfield Lodge of Perfection have been misplaced [perhaps

lost]; much of the following results from the diligent efforts

of Ill. Bro. John H. Smith, 33°, Secretary of the Valley of

Coos Bay.

Julius ~1. Swanson came to the Coos Bay area, probahly,

in 1919 or 1920. lle was quite an entrepreneur in the busi­

ness world, being involved in several kinds of business ven-

tures~relying principally on the wood-fuel and oil sales

,Bandon Lodge #115 was Chartered June 11, 1896, and had its Charter revoked June 14, 1906 , (due to factional differences) . Bandon Lodge #130 was Chartered June 14, 1997, having its orig­inal Charter renewed, and assigned a new number.

and delivery, and when the wood-fuel became scarce, he limit­

ed his business to that of fuel-oil. Bro. Swanson had moved

to Oregon from California, having been convinced of the

Frank M. Buffington was born in Colorado and came to

this growing area of Oregon, probably, in the latter part

of the second decade or the early part of the third decade

of the twentieth century. He was a C.P.A., and, like Bro.

Swanson, teceivea: the Scottish Rite Deirrees: elsewhere• ~ ·, ··

naving · receivea" them in Eugene in· 1947. He was a Charter !1em­

ber of both the Council and Consistory.

Leslie G. Johnson was a Charter Member and the first Ven-

erable Master of Marshfield Lodge of Perfection and the first

Wise Master of Marshfield Chapter of Rose Croix. Edward P. ·

Lewis was a Charter Member and the first Junior Warden of

Marshfield Lodge of Perfection. Each of these Brethren could

·have been involved in obtaining Letters Temporary and/or the

Permanent Charters of these Bodies.

In later years the names of Bros. Claude G. Stotts, Clar­

ence W. Wray and Dale W. Holden appear as officers in some of

the Bodies, and certainly could have participated in the ef~

forts to start this Valley.

No doubt, several other early-day Brethren, whose names

escape us, were involved in these processes. None-the-less,

both Marshfield Lodge ·of Perfection and Marshfield Chapter

of Rose received Letters.Temporary in 1921 and started to

work.

B. PERSONAL REPRESENTATIVES

Bro. Julius M. Swanson, 33° who was known, fondly, as MR. MA-

SON in this are~ for decades; he probably acted in this cap­

acity from the mid-1940's until 1980.

Ill. ~ro. Sherman W. Spelbrink, 33 ° was appointed,: by·· Ill.

Bro. David O. Johnspn, 33°., Active member of the Supreme Coun­

cil and Sovereign Grand Inspector General in Oregon, as Per~

sonal Representative in 1980 and served until 1990 when com­

plications following a severe automobile accident forced him

to resign.

Following Ill. Bro. 'Sherm's' resignation, Ill. Bro.

Johnson appointed Bro. Delbert E. Atkins, 32°, KCCH, who con­

tinues in this position.

Upon receiving Letters Temporary in 1921 ~Rrshfield

Lodge of Perfection and Marshfield Chapter of Rose Croix met

twice each month in the second-floor hall of a building across

from the Egyptian Theater on Broadway Avenue in Marshfield

(now Coos Bay). In 1945 the Bodies of th~~Valley of Marsh­

field had opportunity to purchase the Thernwacker Funeral

Home building on North Second Street - for $12,500; the. build­

ing was remodeled to -accommodate·_ the~ requirements of these

Bodies and it became the Scottish Rite Temple. for several •.-,

years.

Urban renewal was being considered in 1960 in the area

in which the Temple was located, forcing the search for a new

Temple location. In 1962, through the generosity of the own­

er of the v.acant Sunset Theater in the City of Empire (now a

part of Coos Bay), and because of his favorable opinion and

admiration for Masonry, the owner agreed to sell his property

to the Building Committee for $15,000. After extensive remod­

eling at a cost of approximately $11,000, the building was

appropriately furnished and is the present Temple.

f. Anecdotal/Historical

As was common throughout all Fraternal Orders in the de-

pression years, there was a remarkably large decline in mem-

bership, and Scottish Rite Freemasonry suffered accordingly.

Many factors were involved in addition to the unemployment

with its subsequent decrease in family income, hence - less

money.in dues. Another factor having its 'depressing effect'

in the Valley of Marshfield [Coos Bay] was that of the widely

spread~~ cuul., ~-,!1~ ~ that

had spread to the Pacific Coast of the United States. In 1944

the membership in the Valley of Marshfield had declined to

just thirty-nine, half of them livin- far from Marshfield ma­

kin~ attendance at meetings almost impossible.

In the years following the depression, especially during

and following WW II membership grew both considerably and rap­

idly. In 1951 requests for change in ~ames from Marshfield

Lodge of Perfection and Marshfield Chapter of Rose Croix to

Coos Bay Lodge of Perfection and Coos Bay Chapter of Rose

Croix were approved as a result of the, previously accom-·

plished, change in ~ity name.

Prior to 1955, when the Coos Bay Council of Kadosh and ·

Coos Bay Consistory were granted Letters Temporary, all can­

didates for the nineteenth through the thirty-second Degrees

had to travel to Eugene, sometimes by 'busload', thereby be­

coming members of the Valley of Eugene.

~rothers Julius M. Swanson and Deskin Bergey were elec­

ted to have:.~the thirty-third Degree conferred and to be made

Honorary Members of the Supreme Council. They journeyed to

Portland for this impressive Ceremony which took place Decem­

ber 29, 1955; thus, they are the first men so honored from I.

the Valley of Coos Bay.

One of the 'landmark events' of the Scottish Rite in

this Orient occurred in June, 1956 when a group of Brethren

from this and other Valleys in the Orient of Oregon were form­

ally presented to Grand Connnander Luther A. Smith, 33°, in

an auspicious ceremony in the Valley of Eugene.

Continuing into the early part of the decade of the 1980s

membership in the Valley of Coos Bay maintained an upward spi­

ral, and in 1989 approximately $30,000 was expended in remod­

eling the Temple's interior, removal of the old 'theater pi~',

greatly enhancing the interior appearance of the facility.

A contingent of individuals from other Valleys attended

the 1.em:pi:e R~ fl~ October 6, ·, 1989, :,which.-.was

performed by Inspector Johnson.

Easter Sunday March 30, 1986 Coos Bay Chapter of Rose

Croix held an -~'open:.meeting' for its observance of the Cer-,·

emony of Relighting the Lights. Anticipating a large atten­

dance, arrangements were made to conduct the Ceremony in the

Lodge Room of the Blanco Masonic Temple. One-hundred twenty

members and wives and guests attended the inspirational ser­

vice; after which they were served an excellent breakfast by

members of Pacific Counnandery #10. Profits from theis event

went to the Knight Templar Eye Foundation.

During the summer of 1987 the Valley of Coos Bay dona­

ted enough copies of Dynamic Freedoms, Volume #1, to the Ban­

don Highschool to provide each student with a personal copy;

additionally, several copies were placed in the Bandon High­

school Library.

Many Brethren of the Valley of Coos Bay are members of

Bandon Lodge #130 in Bandon, which Lodge, annually, provides

two scholarships to Bandon Highschool Seniors; the choice of

these recipients always is based on excellence of an essay.

The subject in 1991 was titled: THE UNITED STATES CONSTITU­

TION [emphasizing our Nation's Bicentennial Celebration of

the adoption of our Constitution].

The Valley of Coos Bay has produced five Grand Masters:

Andrew Nasburg [Blanco Lodge ff:J+8, Marshfield] was Grand Mas-'

ter in 1887-88; Ralph Thompson Moore. 32° (Bandon Lodge #130,

Bandon] served as Grand Master in 1956-~7;, Julius M. Swanson,

33° [North Bend Lodge #140, North Bend] served as Grand Mas~

ter in 1960-61; Edwin Alva Troyer, 32°, KCCH (North Bend

Lodge #140, North Bend] served as Grand Master in 1973-74 and

Vern E. Garvin, 32° [Sidney Croft Lodge #206, Brookings)

served as Grand Master in 1985-86. John H. Smith. 32°, KCCH

was District Deputy of the Grand Master in District #24 in

1990-91; John H. Smith, 33°~ Secretary of the Valley of Coos

Bay was appointed Senior Grand Deacon of the Grand Lodge for

1991-92 and elected Junior Grand Wa~den for 1992-93. He is

Past Master of North Bend Lodge 1140.
