DESCRIPCIÓN GENERALDE LA RUTA

La ruta está dividida en dostramos y ha sido diseñada paraque sea recorrida en vehículo. Através de este trazado podrávisitar localidades de importanciaclave en el desarrollo histórico,cultural y económico de la VIRegión, y además podráreconocer parajes de gran valorpaisajístico y natural.

Por medio del recorrido decada uno de los dos tramos,podrá empaparse de la historiay cultura de cada una de laslocal idades, a través demanifestaciones materiales comoarquitectura típica, evidenciasarqueológicas y visitas a lugaresemblemáticos en el desarrollo dela identidad propia de la zonahuasa de Chile Central. Visitaráantiguas haciendas donde podráobservar el contraste entre la casapatronal y la casa de losinquilinos, visitará el antiguoconvento de San Pedro deAlcántara y los poblados surgidosen función de la hacienda y de laeconomía rural, podrá efectuarpaseos por sus calles que aún

The trail has been divided in twoparts and it is meant to be done bycar. Throughout this trail you will beable to visit places which have beenkey to the historical, cultural andeconomic development of the VIRegion and you will also have achance to see areas of great naturalbeauty.

By going through the different partsof the trail you will be in touch withthe history and culture of eachplace. Traditional architecture,archeological sites and visit to placesthat have contributed to the rise ofthe Huaso identity in Central Chileare the elements that shape thisexperience. You will visit some oldestates where one can witness thecontrast between the Landlord’shouse and the tenant farmer’shouses, you will visit San Pedro deAlcántara convent and the villagesassociated to the estates and therural economy, you will be able totake walks along their streets whichstill keep a reminiscence of the pastand you will meet people who on adaily bases have contributed to the

El Corregimiento de Colchaguacorresponde a la circunscripciónterritorial creada por el GobernadorMartín García Oñez de Loyola a finesdel siglo XVI, con el objetivo demejorar el control y la administraciónde los territorios rurales más alejadosde Santiago. El territorio ocupado poreste Corregimiento abarcaba el áreacomprendida entre los r íosCachapoal y Rapel por el norte, y losríos Teno y Mataquito por el sur,cubriendo una superficie aproximadade 14.500 Km2. Shortly after the village wasfounded a plan was made from thePlaza de Armas, north-south bound.In 1830 it is named a city. SanFernando is today one of the keypoints in the development of theColchagua Province. It has 63.732inhabitants and it concentrates agroup of fruit and wine productioncompanies, including packing andr e f r i g e ra t i o n o f a g r i c u l t u ra lproducts.

El recorrido comienza en elMuseo Lircunlauta ubicado en laciudad de San Fernando deTinguiririca, fundada en 1742 por elgobernador José Antonio Manso deVelasco en un terreno donado en1739 por Juan Jiménez de León,propietario de la haciendaLircunlauta. Poco después de lafundación de la villa, se procedió aefectuar su trazado a partir de la Plazade Armas con orientación norte – sur.En 1830 obtiene el título de ciudad.En la actualidad, San Fernando es unode los ejes de desarrollo de laprovincia de Colchagua; con sus63.732 habitantes, participa en laproducción frutícola y vitivinícola;además, concentra un conjunto deagroindustrias dedicadas al embalajey refrigeración de productos agrícolas.

” “From Colchagua to Pichilemu”

The Lircunlauta Museum islocated where two roads meet : Rutadel Camino Real a la Frontera andthe Ruta Real del Centro delCorregimiento de Colchagua. Thehouse of the museum is from the18

th century and it has a colonial

architecture. As you walk inside, youwill find an impressive courtyardand then at the back a “U” shapedcourtyard, typical of colonialbuildings. Today the north wing isprivately owned and it is used as awarehouse. The larger central partof the building is owned by SanFernando Town Council and holdsthe Lircunlauta Museum. This housewas given the status of a NationalMonument in 1981 and can bevisited from Tuesday to Sundaybetween 9 am and 7 p.m. The southwing of the house includes the oldcoach houses , it is state owned andthe Ministerio de Bienes Nacionales plans to set up a room to hold anexhibition on Heritage Trails.

Near the museum are theChapel and courtyard of the SanJuan de Dios Hospital. This buildingis from 1884 and it was enlargedwith the arrival of the “Hijas de la

Caridad de San Vicente de Paul”. Theconstruction of the chapel started in1884 and finished in 1899 and itreceived state founds. Regarding itsarchitecture, it has a gothic stylefacade with bricks. The chapel is inits final state or restoration, all itsstained-glass windows have beenrestored, it is considered a jewel ofreligious architecture and it wasgiven the status of NationalMonument.

To go back to the highway, takethe Bernardo O’Higgins Avenue until road I-50 which runs parallel to theTren del Vino railroad, go on for 12km from San Fernando to thecrossing with Dolores EcheverriaStreet. At this point, known also asManantiales town you must turnright, go on for 2 km until GuidePost 1 , Casona de la HaciendaManantiales de Placilla , an adobeconstruction with arched corridorsand “L” shaped plant. The house isunfortunately highly deterioratedand it even has some partiallydemolished sections.

Nacionales proyecta habilitar una salareferente a las rutas patrimoniales.

En las inmediaciones del museo,se recomienda visitar la capilla y patiodel hospital San Juan de Dios. Esteedificio data de 1848 y fue ampliadacon la llegada de las “Hijas de laCaridad de San Vicente de Paul”. Laconstrucción de la capilla se inició en1884 y finalizó en 1899 con aportesdel gobierno. En cuanto a suarquitectura, destaca por su fachadade estilo gótico y su factura conladrillo a la vista. La capilla seencuentra en la fase final de surestauración, presenta sus finosvitrales restaurados; aunque seconsidera una joya de la arquitecturareligiosa y ha sido declaradaMonumento Nacional.

Amongst the owners of thisestate during the 19th century, wasM r s . D o l o r e s E c h e v e r r í a , a naristocratic and wealthy womanwith important social connections.She was the ant of feministw r i t e r I n é s E c h e v e r r í a B e l l o(granddaughter of Andrés Bello) andclose friend of writer Hernán Díaz(Alone) with whom she organizedgatherings at her home.

Across the street from the houseis the Rinconada de ManantialesChurch built approximately duringthe first decade of the 20th century.Is has a nave and a neogothic brickconstruction. It is today separatedfrom the estate but it is believed thatin the past they were part of thesame architectural group. Thechurch is undergoing restorationsponsored by the town council andthe neighbors.

Echeverría. En este punto, conocidotambién como el poblado deManantiales debe virar hacia laderecha y avanzar unos 2 kilómetros,hasta acceder al Hito N°1, quecorresponde a la Casona de laHacienda Manantiales de Placilla,construcción de adobe concorredores porticados y una plantaen forma de “L”. Su estado actual esde deterioro llegando a presentaralgunas demoliciones parciales.

Entre los dueños de estahacienda destacan, durante el sigloXIX, doña Dolores Echeverría, mujeraristócrata y adinerada muyvinculada a los círculos sociales dela época. Fue tía de la escritorafeminista Inés Echeverría Bello (nietadel intelectual Andrés Bello) ytambién fue amiga cercana delescritor Hernán Díaz (Alone) junto aquien organizaba tertulias en supropiedad

Cruzando la calle, frente a lacasona, se encontrará con la iglesiade Rinconada de Manantiales, quefue construida aproximadamentedurante la primera década del sigloXX; posee una nave y unaconstrucción de ladrillos al estiloneogótico. Aunque actualmente estáseparada de la hacienda, se cree queen el pasado formaron parte de unmismo conjunto arquitectónico.Actualmente la iglesia está enproceso de restauración con la ayudadel municipio y vecinos del sector.

Destaca además la grutadedicada a la Virgen ubicada en lascercanías de la iglesia, lugar idealpara recorrer en familia en unentorno de gran valor paisajístico. Enesta localidad, encontrará unrestaurante y una posada dondepuede tomar un buen desayuno decampo.

Para salir de Manantiales,retome la ruta I-50 y avance por 7kilómetros hasta el cruce con lacalle Miraflores; luego doblehacia el sur hasta

Near the church there is also a grotto dedicated to Virgin Mary. Thisis an ideal place to take a stroll withthe family enjoying the landscape.There is a restaurant and an innwhere you can have a good countrystyle breakfast.

To leave Manantiales, retakeroad I-50 and go on for 7 Km untilthe crossing with Miraflores street,then turn south until Oscar Gajardostreet where you will find Guide PostNº 2, Centro Historico de laLocalidad de Placilla. Here you cansense the

characteristics of this trail , that iscountry charm, nice Master´s Housesand their colonial architecture, largecultivated areas. Placilla originatedin the estate by the same namewhich served as a resting place orplaza for travelers on their way tothe capital of the region. In thehistorical center of Placilla is SanFrancisco Solano church whichconstruction began in 1897 andfinished in 1902. The first priest todirect the church was Fidel MaríaPalieres who started the traditionalSan Francisco Celebration held each

encontrarse con la calle ÓscarGajardo, donde se ubica el Hito N°2,que corresponde al Centro Históricode la Localidad de Placilla, en el quereconoceremos la tónica de todo elrecorrido, es decir, encantocampestre, hermosas casaspatronales con arquitectura colonial,y grandes extensiones de terrenoscultivados. Placilla tiene su origen enla hacienda del mismo nombre y sudenominación se origina a que en elpasado sirvió como lugar dedescanso o plaza para los viajerosque se dirigían a la capital regional ahacer sus papeleos. En el centrohistórico de Placilla destaca la iglesiaSan Francisco Solano, cuyaconstrucción se inició en 1897 yconcluyó en 1902. El primer curapárroco que la dirigió fue elfranciscano Fidel María Palieres,quien instauró la típica fiesta de SanFrancisco celebrada cada 4 deoctubre, con peregrinaciones y labendición de pan dulce hecho parala ocasión.

En este recorrido se encontrarácon una serie de restaurantes yquintas de recreo que ofrecendiferentes alternativas para degustarla comida típica de la zona central y,en cuanto a la creación artística podrávisitar una gran cantidad de centrosde artesanías que ofrecen productosconfeccionados a partir del mimbrey del cuero.

Desde la calle principal, OscarGajardo, tome la calle I. Riquelme yllegará a la Casa del Ferroviario; aquídoble a la izquierda y siga el caminode tierra hasta llegar a la estación de

From the main road, OscarGallardo, take street I. Riquelme andyou wil l get to the Casa delFerroviario, turn to the left andfollow the dirt road until the Placillarailroad station. It was part of thebranch line that went from SanFernando to Pichilemu. This was thefirs part of the railroad track thatwas built until the Colchagua stationnear the El Huique estate. It wasnamed a National Monumentin 1993. It has an interestinga r c h i t e c t u r e w i t h a s i m p l erectangular plan and a ridge roofwhich extends to the south platformproviding the passengers withshelter. To leave downtown Placillatake Miraflores street again until I-50 road.

Go along I-50 road for 8 kmuntil the next crossing, turn right intoJosé Domingo Jaramillo street (infront of the gas station) and thenturn left into Armando Jaramillostreet. Here you will find GuidePost Nº 3 Centro Histórico deNancagua. There are severalmeanings to the word Nancagua butthe most accepted is “animal heat orrut”. Nancagua was one of theeleven Indian villages under thejurisdiction of the Corregimiento deColchagua. In 1574 Alonso deEscobar was granted control ofNancagua as well as Indians to workfor him (encomienda) due to hisservices during the conquest. Suchcontrol was later granted to Rodrigode Quiroga. The town started as asettlement for the extraction of goldusing mills. Colonial records give

ferrocarriles de Placilla. Esta formabaparte del ramal que iba desde SanFernando a Pichilemu. Correspondeal primer tramo que se construyóhasta la estación de Colchagua enlas cercanías de la Hacienda ElHuique. Fue declarada MonumentoNacional en el año 1993; llama laatención la riqueza arquitectónicade esta construcción, pues poseeuna sencilla planta rectangular y untecho a dos aguas que se prolongahacia el andén sur, conformando unalero para dar protección a los pasa-jeros. Para salir del centro de Placilla setoma nuevamente la calle Miraflores,hasta encontrarse con la ruta I-50.

Se continúa por la ruta I-50 alargo de 8 kilómetros hasta un nuevocruce, doble hacia la derecha por lacalle José Domingo Jaramillo (frentea una bomba bencinera) y luego enla esquina de la calle ArmandoJaramillo, doble a la izquierda; en estelugar se encontrará con el Hito N°3,que corresponde al Centro Históricode Nancagua. Los significados de lapalabra Nancagua son variados,aunque la versión más aceptada esque significa “celo de animales”.Nancagua fue uno de los oncepueblos indígenas que estuvieronbajo la jurisdicción del Corregimientode Colchagua. En 1574 lae n c o m i e n d a d e N a n c a g u apertenecía a Alonso de Escobar, aquien le fue otorgada por losservicios prestados en la conquista.Más tarde la recibió Rodrigo deQuiroga. El poblado se habríaoriginado en función de la extracciónde minerales de oro en trapiches.Documentos coloniales del siglo XVIIIprueban la existencia de trapichesen Nancagua, Apalta, y Millagüe.Actualmente sus fértiles tierrassustentan grandes plantaciones deviñedos y frutales.

En su casco histórico destacanuna serie de construcciones de estilocolonial, como la casa patronal de laex Hacienda Nancagua, dondeactualmente se ubica el edificiomunicipal. Su construcción data de

account of mills in Nancagua, Apaltaand Millagüe. Nowadays its fruitfullands have large vineyards and fruitplantations.

In its historical centre there areseveral colonial style buildings suchas the master´s house of theNancagua estate which today hoststhe town hall. Is construction datesback to the end of the 19th century.In 1870 the property was bought byAdolfo Ortuzar Gandarillas, a deputefor Rancagua who later sold it toMrs. Juana Ross de Edwards, one ofthe richest person in Chile and aphilanthropist. This building hadseveral owners until 1960 when itbecame a property of the towncouncil. It is a beautiful building , inthe outside it has tiled corridors andoak pillars. The main entrance, whichtoday is the back part of thebuilding, has a park with many trees,especially cypresses. These treesmotivate the visitor to stroll alongthe park and sit in their shade.

Next to the town hall is theNuestra Señora de la Merced church.Bishop Manuel de Alday created thisparish in the Nancagua estate in1769 and Miguel Paredo became incharge of it in 1770. Years later, in1885, the church was repaired withfounds provided by Juana Ross whoordered the floor of the nave to betiled so the tenant farmers could alsoenjoy some comfort. After the 1906earthquake the church was restoredonce more.

The whole area reflects thetypical architecture of the 19

Century: terraced houses, and tiledridge roofs. Orange trees have beenplanted in the streets and are thecharacteristic seal of Nancagua.

To leave Nancagua take JoséDomingo Jaramillo street southbound, cross road I-50 and finallytake route I-82 towards Puquillay.

Along road I-82 and after some3.5 km you will come to a fork to

Esterecinto pasó por varios dueñoshasta que en 1960 se transformóe n e l e d i f i c i o m u n i c i p a l .A r q u i t e c t ó n i c a m e n t e e s t aconstrucción destaca por su belleza,en el exterior posee corredoresembaldosados con pilares trabajadosen recio pino Oregón. La entradapr incipal , que ac tualmentecorresponde a la parte posterior, nosofrece un parque formado porañosos árboles, en su mayoríacipreses, que invita al visitante apasear por sus recodos y descansarbajo sus frondosas ramas.

A un costado del edificiomunicipal se encuentra la iglesia deNuestra Señora de la Merced. Elobispo Manuel de Alday creó estaparroquia en la Hacienda Nancaguaen 1769, tomando posesión de ellaMiguel de Peredo en 1770. Años mástarde, en 1885, la iglesia fue reparadacon aportes de doña Juana Ross,quien mandó embaldosar toda lasuperficie de la nave para que losinquilinos también pudiesen disfrutarde algunas comodidades. Luego delterremoto de 1906, esta iglesianuevamente fue refaccionada yreparada.

En toda la localidad seevidencian los ejemplos de laarquitectura típica del siglo XIX: casascon fachada continua y techos detejas a dos aguas. Las calles delpueblo han sido plantadas connaranjos y constituyen el sellocaracteríst ico de Nancagua.

Por la ruta I-82, al cabo de unos3,5 kilómetros, se encontrará con labifurcación entre Puquillay yChépica; tome la ruta de la izquierda(I-810), avance por 1,5 kilómetroshasta llegar a los faldeos del cerroPuquillay. Aquí se ubica el Hito N° 4,correspondiente al Santuario de LaVirgen de Puquillay, ubicadoaproximadamente cinco kilómetrosal sur de Nancagua. Esta construcciónque data de 1908 no estuvo exentade problemas; entre estos, la dificultadde subir la pesada imagen de LaVirgen, que medía tres metros de altoy estaba forjada en fierro bronceado.El problema se resolvió con el auxiliode los feligreses que construyeron uncamino empedrado por el cual losbueyes arrastraron la imagen hastala cima. El artífice de esta titánica obrafue Eufrasio Montero, párroco deNancagua en aquel entonces.

Desde la cima del santuario seofrece al espectador un asombrosopanorama: hacia el Este, la Cordillerade los Andes con sus picachosnevados; al Norte, los cerros de Yáquily Apalta; al pie del cerro se observael valle, rico en viñedos y árbolesfrutales, atravesado por el ríoTinguiririca; en las laderas de los cerrosdestaca la presencia de rocas ymatorral esclerófilo, predominandoel quisco (Echinopsis chilensis).

Here you will find Guide PostNº4 Santuario de la Virgen dePuquillay, which is about 5 kmsouth from Nancagua. This shrine isfrom 1908 and its constructiuonposed some problems, amongothers, the placement of the Virginwhich is a 3mt iron forged statue .The problem was solved with thehelp of the congregation who builta stone road along which oxenpulled the statue to the top. From the highest point at theshrine you can enjoy the view; to theeast there is the Cordillera the losAndes with its snowed peaks, to thenorth the Yáquil and Apalta hills. Atthe skirt of the hill there is the valleywhich crossed by the Tinguiriricariver gives life to vine yards and fruittrees. On the slopes of the hills onecan see rocks and esclerophyllusforest where quisco trees (Echinopsischilensis) dominate.

painted in colors), the rural road hasmany houses alongside it. Thesehouses have the typical sidewalkfacing façade. The street of this towndo not follow the typical Spanishgrid system. The architecture of thehouses, corridors and terracedhouses give the sensation of aroofed sidewalk which protectspedestrians from sun and rain.

Amongst the public buildingsmention must be made of the townhall with a “U” shaped plant andneoclassical façade. The parishbuildings and parish house are alsointeresting and amongst the ridgeroofs raises the bell tower. Thechurch was originally built 5 kmfrom Chépica in the San Antonioestate. In 1860 some land wasdonated and the church could bemoved to town in 1875. It had to berebuilt after the 1906 earthquake.

A couple of blocks away fromdowntown, walking along 18 deSeptiembre street you can get toCasa Gabarda (former Casa Massa)built in 1910. This house breaks withthe traditional style predominant inthe area. It has two floors, a longsidewalk facing façade and ahanging balcony. Its unusual andmixed decorative elements makethis house unique and give it aneclectic look. To leave this area goalong 18 de Septiembre until road I-89 which will lead you to Santa Cruz.

2003 due to its architecture andpicturesque landscape which give ita cultural identity worth preserving.The owners of the houses in theprotected area must therefore keeptheir original design.

There was no urban plan sincethe town developed following preexisting roads. In this town the longsections of adobe houses with theirfacades to the sidewalk are animportant feature. They follow theroad as it twist and turns and thegeographical forms which givesLolol an especial rural colonialappeal. Some decorative elementssuch as wooden plinths, pillars andeaves are worth noticing. This typicalarchitecture is complemented bystreet lamps which before electricityworked on carbide.

The church and the parishhouse in Lolol are interesting to visit.The Natividad de la Santísima Virgende la Merced parish was created in1824 and the present church wasbuilt between 1914 and 1918. Por ello los propietariosde las casas ubicadas en la zonaprotegidas deben conservar sudiseño original.

La trama urbana es libre ya quesigue los caminos preexistentes. Elpoblado se caracteriza por los largostramos de viviendas de adobe concorredor a la calle, siguiendo lascurvas del camino y los accidentesgeográficos, lo que le confiere a Lololun atractivo singular propio delmundo rural colonial. them have been removed), there arestill wooden bridges and of coursethe simple architecture with theoutside corridors which have somebenches for pedestrian to sit on. Dryfarming and the little familyvegetable gardens are also part ofthe rural atmosphere.

From San Pedro de Alcántaratake the same road that took you totown and go back to road I-72, northbound for about 33 km until you getto Pumanque, Guide Post Nº 11.The name of this municipality is fromMapudungun language and itmeans “many Condors”. This isanother example of a typical ruralvillage, with a simple architecturethat takes you back in time as youlook at the traditional terracedhouses with their open corridor andtheir beautifully decorated woodenpillars.

A m o n g s t t h e i n t e r e s t i n gfeatures on its historical centre is theVirgen del Rosario parish. The firstdata that is kept about this churchgive evidence of the bishop’s visit toNuestra Señora del Rosario chapelin 1767 and a census conducted in1787. The parish was probably builtin 1824 and given the name ofVirgen del Rosario which imagedating from 1700 was probablybrought from Cuzco by the owner ofthe Pumanque state Mrs. MarianaCastillo de Valenzuela. The originalchurch had adobe walls, a thatchedroof and dirt floor. It was rebuilt in1913 and restored after the 1985earthquake.

The legend tells that Mrs.Francisca Segura is buried in thePumanque church, she was themother of Juan Esteban Rodriguez,son of Manuel Rodriguez. It is saidthat this guerrilla man, came toPumanque as a spy. This characteris usually covered in a veil of mysterysince he many times had to act ondisguise to carry on his espionagemissions. Story goes that he oncepretended to be a drunken peasant

Esta localidad, bastante alejadade los grandes centros poblados, secaracteriza por mantener de formarelativamente intacta su enormeencanto rural reflejado en algunosdetalles en las calles, como los farolesque datan del siglo pasado (pese aque algunos han sido renovados), lospuentes de madera que aún seconservan y su sencilla arquitecturadonde predominan los corredoresexteriores con algunos bancos queinvitan al transeúnte al descanso enun entorno rural caracterizado porlos cultivos de secano y las pequeñashuertas para el consumo familiar queposeen los campesinos de la zona.

Desde San Pedro de Alcántararetorne por el mismo camino hastala ruta I-72, siguiendo la direcciónnorte por aproximadamente 33kilómetros, hasta acceder a laLocalidad de Pumanque, cuyocentro histórico corresponde al HitoN°11; el nombre de esta comunaproviene del mapudungún y quieredecir “muchos cóndores”. Estalocalidad es otro ejemplo del típicopoblado rural, con una arquitecturasencilla que evoca el pasado y secaracteriza por conservar los rasgostradicionales de la casa de fachadacontinua con corredores expuestos,destacando el trabajo de carpinteríaen los detalles de los pilares.

D e n t r o d e l o s r a s g o sinteresantes de su centro histórico,se encuentra la parroquia de laVirgen del Rosario. Los primeros

antecedentes que se tienen de estaiglesia son la visita obispal a la capillade Nuestra Señora del Rosario en1767 y el censo de población de1787. La parroquia habría sidoconstruida en 1824 bajo el título dela Virgen del Rosario, cuyaimagen, que data del año 1700aproximadamente, habría sido traídadesde el Cuzco por la dueña de lahacienda Pumanque, doña MarianaCastillo viuda de Valenzuela. La iglesiaoriginal poseía paredes de adobe,techo de paja y piso de tierra; en 1913la iglesia fue reconstruida, siendoretocada luego del terremoto de1985.

Estos humedales amparanuna importante diversidad biológicay en muchos casos constituyenalbergues para aquellas especiesseriamente amenazadas, principal-mente aves, muchas de las cuales sonespecies migratorias que vienendesde el hemisferio norte y queanidan en este humedal y otros dela zona, transformando el sector enun importante corredor biológicopara la fauna silvestre, un reguladorclimático y una fuente de agua paradiferentes usos. To start the second part of thetrail from Pichilemu towardsCiruelos, take Cáhuil Avenue (do nottake the road to the coast), this is adirt road. When you come to a forkin Las Comillas town, take the roadto the right, to Ciruelos.

Some 13 km south of Pichilemuis Guide Post Nº13, Los Ciruelos .This is one of the oldest towns onthe coast of Colchagua, itsconstructions have a simplearchitecture. Strolling through thistown you will be taken back to therural past of the central coast.

On the other sideis Ciruelos´s elementary school andthe Niño Rural museum (Museumof the rural child), created by thechildren from the school. Across from the station, takeroad I-50 to the east and drive alongit for approximately 7 km until ELHuique, Guide Post Nº16 . Hereyou will find the old bridge acrossTinguiririca river , known as “Puentetechado”. This bridge connectedPalmilla and El Huique and it wasbuilt in 1875. It used to have a ridgeroof but it was taken out in the 60´s.

Across from the bridge you willfind the gardens around the PalacioErrázuriz de Pupilla, which wasdestroyed in the 1906 earthquake.Nowadays its garden is a publicpark and it is a reminder of thesplendor of old times.

From “Puente Techado” bridge go 2km until the new bridge that crossesthe Tinguiririca river, then go intothe El Huique town for 1.5 km untilyou see the San José del Carmen delHuique master’s house. This housewas named a National Monumentin 1971 and today it is used as amuseum kept by the army. Mentionmust be made of the fact that thebuildings which are part of thisgroup are the most outstandingexample of the “master’s house”typology of Chilean architecture.This explains why they are part of a

The San José del Carmen delHuique estate has its origin in theLarmahue estate which was startedat the beginning of the 17th centuryby the conqueror Juan de Quirogabased on grants and acquisition ofland. In the midst of the 17th

century, the land passed to theEcheñique family and at the end ofthat century the first division of theland in two shares took place, theywere named Almahue and ElHuique. In 1828, the owner of “ElHuique” was Juan José EcheñiqueBascuñán who began building thehouses as well as increasing theland. In 1852 he built the beautifulchurch.

The only daughter of Juan José, Ms. Gertrudis Echeñique was theonly inheritor of “El Huique” andcontinued the work of her father.She and her husband- FedericoErrázuriz Echaurren who wasPresident of the Republic between1896 and 1901- invested energy andmoney in the construction,increasing the number of rooms

Para salir de El Huique tome elcamino I-345 hacia el norte, continúepor 5,5 kilómetros aproximadamentehasta el cruce con Santa Ana delHuique donde debe doblar hacia eleste (izquierda) por un camino detierra bordeando un pequeño cerro;en este sector destaca la existenciade algunos viñedos, grandesextensiones de praderas dondepredomina el espino (Acacia caven)y algunas viviendas muy aisladasdonde puede comprar tortillas y panamasado. Continúe por el caminorural durante aproximadamente 2,8kilómetros, luego siga hacia el nortebordeando algunos cerros donde seencuentran laderas de umbría(recubiertas con abundante matorralesclerófilo de poca altura) y laderas

de solana (aquellas que recibenmayor radiación solar y por tanto

poseen menos vegetación),continúe por el camino rural

Go on I-860 road for 9.2kilometers until Guide Post Nº17,Santa Amelia de Almahue, whereyou will find Santa Amelia estatewhich house was built in 1905 in aclear French style with adobe androof tiles. At the left side of the stateyou will find the Chapel dating backto 1935. Inside the chapel (mass iscelebrated on Wednesdays at 8 pm)there is a painting depicting theVirgen de la Medalla Milagrosa(Virgin with the Miracle Medal)brought from Paris. In front of thehouse we find Molino Santa Amelia (Santa Amelia Mill) which was alsopart of the estate and a necessarytool to make flour from the mainproduct of the estate : wheat. Thismill was built between 1860 and1870 and i t is undergoingrestoration to use it as a museum inthe future.

Take the rural road to the rightuntil you get to H-76 road . Alongthis road you will see a large

number of hills and you will gothrough a mountain crossing from the Colchagua valley.

The characteristics of this valleyare the vineyards, river Cachapoalvalley, a dry landscape withprairies and some areas withsclerophyllous forest. Go along

hasta acceder al Hito N° 17, quecorresponde a la Localidad de SantaAmelia de Almahue, donde seencuentra el fundo Santa Amelia,cuya casona fue construida en 1905,con un claro estilo francés, de adobey tejas. Al lado izquierdo del fundopodrá observar La Capilla de lahacienda que data de 1935. Al inte-rior de la Capilla –donde se realizamisa los días miércoles a la 8 de latarde- destaca una pintura querepresenta a la Virgen de la MedallaMilagrosa, traída desde París. Frentea la casona nos encontramos con elMolino Santa Amelia, que tambiénformó parte del fundo y que eranecesario para fabricar harina a partirdel principal producto cultivado enel sector: el trigo. Este molino fueconstruido entre los años 1860 y1870 y actualmente se encuentra enproceso de restauración paraconstituir un futuro museo.

Siga a mano derecha por elcamino rural, hasta llegar a la rutaH-76; a lo largo de esta travesía,caracterizada por la gran cantidadde lomas y cerros que se suceden,usted cruzará por un portezuelo,desde el valle de Colchagua,caracterizado por los cultivosvitivinícolas, al valle del ríoCachapoal, en un ambiente másbien de secano, donde predominala vegetación de praderas y algunossectores con bosque esclerófilo.Continúe por la ruta H-76, doblandohacia la izquierda por el cruce conla calle Parroquial, donde seencontrará con el Hito N°18, quecorresponde a la Iglesia de NuestraSeñora del Rosario de Pichidegua,ubicada en la localidad de La Torina.Esta iglesia y su casa parroquial seubican en el acceso al predio desdeel camino público. Llaman laatención sus gruesos muros deadobe y el finísimo decorado delcielo realizado a mano. La iglesia seconstruyó ocupando planospresuntamente confeccionados porJoaquín Toesca, arquitecto italianoque llegó a Chile el año 1780,introduciendo la arquitectura de

Leave for Larmahue takingroad H-76, driving along the southside of the Cachapoal river and becareful not to cross the Codaobridge. Go along until the crossingand take the road to San Vicente,at the second crossing take I-75road to the east (Larmahue) andyou will come to Guide Post Nº 19,Azudas de Larmahue (LarmahuePaddle Wheels) , a NationalMonument since 1998 . Along the road there are fourpoints from where you can see thesewheels at work, they take waterfrom the channels from Septemberuntil early winter.

Go along road I-75 until thefork leading to a dirt road and apaved one, take the dirt road to SanV i c e n t e d e Ta g u a Ta g u aarcheological site. From this pointgo on for 3.6 km until the firstdetour where you must turn left, inthis area you will find the so called“socavón” (hole) which was used totake the water out of the lagoonwhen it was once emptied. Here onecan see marshland vegetation. Goon for half a mile until the seconddetour, where you must turn rightand you will reach Escuela de laLaguna (Lagoon’s School) whereyou will start the part of the trailnamed Sector Arqueológico deSan Vicente, Guide Post Nº20. Thehistory of human presence in thearea of Laguna de Tagua Taguagoes back some 11.000 years. In thisarcheological site you will see fossilsfound in the area the Laguna deTagua Tagua ( Tagua TaguaLagoon) used to cover, you will alsobe able to visit the southernmost“pucará” (pre-Columbian fortress)of the Inca Empire and find one ofthe oldest Indian cemeteries inChile.

The first colonist grantedcontrol of land and Indians(encomendero) in Tagua Taguawas Juan Bautista Pastene. Towardsthe 18th century the Tagua Taguaestate was one of the largest in theregion. The town develops later dueto the activity in the estate and thewater courses. The Tagua Tagualagoon was once dried and thushuman and pleistocene faunabones were found, the latter weremainly from mastodon and deer.

Continúe avanzando por la rutaI-75, hasta la bifurcación entre uncamino de tierra y otro pavimentado,tome el desvío de tierra hacia la zonaarqueológica de San Vicente deTagua Tagua. A partir de este puntosiga por 3,6 kilómetros hasta llegaral primer desvío donde debe doblara la izquierda; en este sector seencontrará con el llamado “socavón”que sirvió como desagüe para lalaguna Tagua Tagua al momento deser vaciada; desde acá es posibleobservar la vegetación característicade los sectores pantanosos. Continúepor medio kilómetro hasta elsegundo desvío, donde deberádoblar hacia la derecha accediendoa la Escuela de La Laguna, donde seinicia el recorrido del SectorArqueológico de San Vicente,correspondiente al Hito N°20. Lahistoria de la ocupación humana enel sector de la Laguna de Tagua Taguase remonta a aproximadamente11.000 años de antigüedad. En estesector arqueológico usted podráapreciar restos fósiles hallados en ellugar que ocupaba la Laguna TaguaTagua, también podrá visitar elpucará más austral del ImperioIncaico y finalmente podrá encontraruno de los cementerios indígenasmás antiguos de Chile.

There is also theEscuela de la Laguna where thereis a small museum exibiting objectsfound in the area such as arrowheads, tools and decorativeelements made of stone and bone.

Going along the north side ofthe old Laguna Tagua Tagua thereis Cerro La Muralla (La Muralla Hill)which is presumed to be one of thesouthernmost Pucarás in Chile. Itwas apparently used as a watch ordefense point since from the top onecan see both the north valley andthe south basin. This Pucará canonly be accessed from the south.Evidence suggest that this Pucaráwas built by the Incas due to thetype of stones used, the size of therooms and the terrace structure insome areas.

Going along the trail you getto the third archeological site whichis Cerrillo de Cuchipuy (whichmeans soul smell) . This place isapproximately 7 km from thelagoon, following the rural road andthen taking the left at the detour.There is a large burial site wherefour overlaying Indian cemeteriescan be found , the deepest level ofthis burial site is the oldest in theAmericas being more than 8000years old. The site has human bonesare in a foetal position , ceramicsand stone artifacts (knives, toolsand arrowheads) which shows theritual nature of the burials. Thebones belonging to more than 100individuals have been found.According to the archeologicalevidence, small human groupscame on a regular basis to thelagoon as part of their hunting-gathering activities.

Go along the road parallel tothe water channel skirting CerroMina de Cuero (Mina de Cuero hill)

una de las más extensas de la región.El poblado surge posteriormente enfunción a la hacienda y de los cursosde agua. En primer lugar destaca elsector de Laguna Tagua Tagua, queal ser desecada, dejó al descubiertouna serie de restos óseos tanto deseres humanos como de faunapleistocénica, destacando los huesosde mastodontes y de ciervos; ademásde los vestigios de los primeroshabitantes cazadores recolectores enChile, estrechamente relacionadoscon la mega fauna que habitaba lossectores otrora pantanosos de lalaguna. En este sector se encuentrala Escuela de La Laguna donde existeun pequeño museo con piezasencontradas en el sector comopuntas de flecha y artefactosu t i l i t a r i o s y d e c o r a t i v o sconfeccionados en piedra y hueso.

Prosiguiendo el recorrido por laorilla norte de la antigua LagunaTagua Tagua, destaca el Cerro LaMuralla, que sería el Pucará Inca másseptentrional de Chile. Se presumeque fue utilizado como un punto deobservación o cuartel de defensa, yaque desde aquí se domina tanto elvalle norte como la cuenca sur. A estePucará sólo se puede acceder por ellado sur; las evidencias hacensuponer que esta construcción fueefectuada por los incas, debido altrabajo de la piedra en bloques, ladimensión de los recintos y lasestructuras en forma de terraza dealgunos sectores.

Continuando el recorrido sellega al tercer punto de importanciaarqueológica, que corresponde alCerrillo de Cuchipuy (que significa“olor de almas”); ubicado aaproximadamente 7 kilómetros delsector La Laguna, por el camino rural,donde aparece un desvío a manoizquierda frente al que se presentauna extensa área de entierros, dondese pueden encontrar cuatrocementerios indígenas superpuestos,siendo el nivel más profundo, uno delos más antiguos de América, conmás de 8000 años de antigüedad. este sector además de osamentashumanas dispuestas en cuclillas seencuentran cerámicas y artefactoslíticos (cuchillos, herramientas ypuntas de flecha), lo que evidenciael carácter ritual de estos entierros.Hasta e l momento se hanencontrado los restos óseos de másde 100 individuos. Según la evidenciaarqueológica, se presume quepequeños grupos humanos llegabanperiódicamente a la laguna con unaforma de subsistencia basada en lacaza y la recolección.

Arquitectónicamentedestaca por sus aleros, las finasterminaciones de carpintería y por elactual uso de sus aparadoresoriginales.

Para salir del centro de SanVicente de Tagua Tagua, tome la calleDiego Portales hasta el cruce con lacarretera de La Fruta, doble endirección hacia la costa (hacia laizquierda), continúe hasta el primercruce, donde deberá virar hacia laderecha, continúe por 9 kilómetroshasta acceder al Pueblo de Zúñiga,que corresponde al Hito N°22, quedebe su nombre al párroco dePeumo, Antonio Zúñiga. En laactualidad esta localidad está enproceso de ser declarada Zona Típicay algunas de sus construccionesMonumento Nacional.

Este poblado surge en torno ala parroquia, construida a finales delsiglo XVIII y reconstruida en el año1847, donde a su vez se acondicionaun parque a su alrededor. Destacanlos vidrios de colores en las ventanasprotegidos por barrotes de fierroforjado. Las casas ubicadas en elentorno de la plaza datan del sigloXIX y presentan la arquitecturacolonial típica, donde predomina lafachada continua, los materialesmantienen la línea original, siendosus muros de adobe y techos de tejade arcilla. The name of the town comesfrom the name of Peumo´s priestAntonio Zúñiga. This town isundergoing the procedures to benamed a Zona Típica (typical zone)and some of its constructions mightbe named National Monument. .

This town developed aroundthe church, built at the end of the18th century and rebuilt in 1847 thistime with a park around it. It hascolor glasses on the windows whichare protected by forged iron fences. The houses around the plaza arefrom the 19th century and have thetypical colonial architecture,terraced houses, adobe walls andtile roofs. Strolling along the mainstreet you will find the “Casa Lisboa”built between 1850 and 1860 byR a m ó n L i s b o a M u ñ o z , ad e s c e n d a n t o f Po r t u g u e s eimmigrants who arrived to Rapelin 1776. This house is unique, it hasa “U” plan with reinforces structureson both storeys and a corner pillarunder the corridor.

To return, go back to SanVicente de Tagua Tagua and takethe road to the south which leadsto El Tambo driving along I-80 roadfor approximately 11 kilometers.You will see large crop fields amongthe first hills of the Cordillera de laCosta. “Casa Lisboa”, que fue construidaentre 1850 y 1860, por Ramón LisboaM u ñ o z , d e s c e n d i e n t e d eportugueses avecindados en Rapelhacia 1766. Esta construcción es únicaen su estilo, posee forma de “U” congalerías fortificadas en sus dosplantas, destacando un pilar deesquina bajo el corredor.

Para retornar devuélvase hastaSan Vicente de Tagua Tagua y tomeel camino hacia el sur, que lleva alsector de El Tambo, por la ruta I-80,avanzando aproximadamente 11kilómetros; en este sector observaráextensos campos cultivados entre lasestribaciones que conforman lacordillera de la Costa. Siga avanzandopor 8,8 kilómetros hasta la ruta 5 sur,donde accederá nuevamente a laciudad de San Fernando, puntodonde finaliza el recorrido.

As the ranches consolidatedtheir economies and diversificationwas achieved through, for examplethe exporting of new products suchas wheat, they had an increasingimportance. Thus the land started tobe delimited and the formation of the“haciendas” began (states) whichbecame a land administrationsystem with closed economies, selfsustained and self-sufficient. Thismeans that the estates had , forcenturies, an existence and adevelopment in isolation, they wereautonomous and had no connectionsto the outside. Within their borders,everything needed by a rural man ofthose times could be found: food,clothing, wines , candles, leather,blacksmith’s, fruits, etc. Within thiscontext, the house of the masters, thewarehouses, stables, and otherbuildings are one of the most preciousexamples of the Chilean ruralarchitectural heritage.
