Why Use a Nonlinear Solution?
Good engineering requires skillful approximation.
All structures can behave in nonlinear manner depending on
loading and boundary conditions.
In many situations, a linear approximation and solution is
valid and the preferred solution as it is easier and more
efficient to solve.
But …
• All physical systems in the real world are inherently
nonlinear in nature.
• Linear analysis is “wrong”, because life is nonlinear…!

Why Use a Nonlinear Solution?
Reasons that a nonlinear solution may be needed:
• Boundary Nonlinearity: Connection area between parts
changes with loading and/or movement
• Geometric Nonlinearity: Structure rotates and/or
deforms significantly and hence load directions change
with increased loading
• Material Nonlinearity: Material stiffness changes as the
load changes

Challenge:
• Needed non-linear solver to analyze thermal and
mechanical response of engine components and
system
• Large displacement, plasticity, creep, user-defined
materials and contact at high temperature duty cycles
• Needed to replace in-house solver
Solution:
• NX Nastran Nonlinear with SC Thermal selected
• Close working relationship with customer to enable
workflows
• Started with compressor stage deployment. Planning
move to other stages.
