Get Exam Ready!Top Tip #6: Research shows that reading, highlighting and copying your notes just won’t cut it for revision. You need to engage with the information on a deeper level. Reorganise your notes; produce flash cards; make

posters; create charts; design mind-maps and draw pictures. These are all really good ways of making your brain work harder during the revision process and therefore memorise information much more effectively.

School ShowUnfortunately, due to the snow and school closure the School Show, ‘School of Rock’, had to be postponed. Although it has been rescheduled, for 12-14 March, the cast were of course very disappointed. However, on Friday, Mrs Newton received a call to invite the principal cast of the show to perform at the Barbican on Saturday night as part of ‘A Night to Remember’. Students were thrilled at the invitation to perform. Mr Donaghy knew how much time and effort students had put into the production and to have it cancelled by snow was devastating. Giving them a chance to perform at the Barbican certainly added a silver lining to a disappointing week.

Sports Corner

You may remember that as part of BBC School Report, students were asked to write a news article about a story that sparked their interest over half term which they found inspirational in some way. Here’s Oliver’s take on the Space X Falcon Rocket…

BBC Schools News Report - SpaceX Falcon Heavy Test-Flight

Elon Musk’s company ‘SpaceX’ has just launched the Falcon Heavy rocket into space. They did this in order to test the rocket was able to carry out future missions. After a very successful take-off the rocket then soared into space before detaching with its payload. The payload was a brand new, red Tesla roadster worth $100,000. After detaching from the payload both rockets made a graceful landing back on earth: almost as if it was choreographed. While all the action unfolded there were 500,000 people littered all over the ground eagerly gazing at the spectacle occurring before their eyes.

The Falcon Heavy is the most powerful rocket that has ever been launched. It is like the Saturn V rocket of the Apollo era. With this much power and a reusable rocket, Elon Musk believes that this could spell “game over” for other commercial space companies.

This story is important because in the future the population of earth may become too overwhelming for its resources or the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere just makes the earth inhabitable. If that happens then the human species may have to move away from the planet in order to survive. An example of a planet humans could move to is Mars, this is because Mars has a slight atmosphere and traces of water. However, with current technology that seems undoable, but if the development of Elon Musk’s rockets continues then that won’t be such an impossible task because the rockets will be reusable cutting costs, and the power of the spacecraft will suit the requirements. This clearly highlights the fact that this story is very important because space travel may become an aspect of everyone’s lives in the near future.

Transition: A movement special effect that takes place as one slide replaces another in a slide show. (Trans - from Latin transire, ‘go across’.

OF THE WEEK

KarateOlivia Teasdale has been doing Karate almost 4 years. She works very hard, training twice a week at Haxby Shotokan Karate Club, 4 hours in total (a little more when teaching some of the younger kids’ class, which she does as part of her DofE) Olivia’s progressed well and is working towards hopefully grading for her Shodan (black belt) next February.

GCSE PEA big well done to the Year 9 GCSE PE students who spent a morning running a Year 4 Multi-skills Competition for over 160 pupils from across the city. The feedback from staff was exemplary.

FootballThe Year 8 football team got back to winning ways beating Tadcaster Grammar School 3-1. The side went in 1-0 down but eventually won the game 3-1. Special mention to Cain Harrison and Charlie Petch who were the stand out players.

Literacy NewsAHS English Writing BlogStudents are warmly invited and encouraged to visit the new AHS English writing blog at www.ahswriting.wordpress.com.

Here, students can explore examples of their teachers’ writing, as well as having the opportunity to submit their own writing to be read by peers and teachers. Students are encouraged to submit examples of their own personal, creative writing, or pieces they have done in class and are proud of. Through the blog, students can then read and comment on each other’s work, or directly Tweet their writing to the AHS English Twitter feed.

All students need to do is click on the ‘Submit Writing’ button on the main menu, type it up or copy and paste it from a document, and wait for it to be approved by their teacher. After that, their writing will appear on the website for all to read!

Of Fox, O Fox

O fox, o fox

How is your heart?

Is it as bright as can be,

Or darkest of dark?

O fox, o fox,

When you kill

Over the lake

And near the hills.

O tell me,

Is it natural?

Or is it not?

When you splatter your prey’s blood

All over the rock…

O fox, o fox,

Were you raised like this?

To kill and to hurt?

To let out a bark?

O fox, o fox,

How is your heart?

It looks to me like its

Darkest of dark…

Adverse WeatherHopefully summer will be on the way very soon and the following will not be required until next year. However, in the event of any more adverse weather where we are required to close the school for ‘health and safety’ or ‘insufficient staff to operate safely’, we will do the following.

Closing school before school starts

• We will make a decision as early as possible and text home, regularly update our social media sites, inform local radio stations, inform the Local Authority for those who travel by taxi and add a notice to the school website. (We are aware the school website ‘crashed’ last week due to the volume of traffic and are working with our hosting company to remedy this).

Closing school during the school day

• If the weather forces us to close during the school day, we will text home, add regular updates to our social media sites, inform local radio stations, inform the Local Authority for those who travel by taxi and add a notice to the school website. We will also work with our bus companies to ensure these are brought forward. If you do not wish us to send your child home, please contact us and we will keep them until 3.10pm as normal.

Please be assured we want school to be open and it is only on very rare occasions that we will be forced to close the school. For further information please see our ‘Adverse Weather Policy’.

Year 8 Visit to Pocklington Buddhist CentreStudents will be visiting the centre on Tuesday 13 March, they will be taking part in a Q&A session and have the opportunity to practise meditation. Please return permission forms to Sixth Form Reception by Friday 9 March.

Archbishop Holgate’s School… working for Justice and CompassionEaster Eggs - In addition to our usual giving, this Lent we are collecting Easter Eggs for York families who need to use the food bank. Every form is challenged to collect the loose change of each member of the class in order to purchase one or more Easter eggs – 20p, 50p, £1. A small egg may be given to an individual child, a larger egg may be given to a family to share. Families are also very welcome to purchase Easter Eggs themselves and donate them at Reception. All eggs will be gratefully received. Thank you for your help this Lent 2018.

Year 8 student shows true Community ValuesThis week we received a message from Miss Platts (Year 5/6 Teacher) at Park Grove Primary Academy with high praise for one of our Year 8 students, Onett Perera.

She said: “I just wanted to let you know about a project one of your Year 8 students is doing at our school. Onett was one of my students two years ago, and I knew from then he had a keen interest in coding. Around October last year, he came to visit me at school and proposed leading a Coding Club for Year 5/6 pupils, sharing his expertise and interest with some of his old school mates. We started the Coding Club on 20 February and I am so impressed with the planning and effort Onett has taken in preparing each session. He has been emailing me to share his thoughts and ideas, he has coded a shooter style game with written tips and advice within the code to share with the club and is teaching the skills very eloquently, with his friend Jacob.”

We cannot praise Onett highly enough for giving something back to his community and showing the school values in action. Well done Onett.
