b
Case a → “Generator-source short circuit“ AC-component decays faster as DC-component. Resulting asymmetrical current can cause delay of current zero for several cycles at the time of contact parting
Case b → “System-source short circuit“ No delay of current zero since DC-component is up to 75% only. Magnitude of current is comparatively high at the time of contact parting
Current magnitude
t ( contact parting )
Verification of suitability is done by short circuit calculation based on IEC 60909-1. Complex network studies are done with simulation software PSS ® NETOMAC

Siemens generator switchgear Vacuum technology – advantages over gas generator breakers
Compared to gas generator breakers with hydraulic driving mechanism …
… Vacuum interrupters are hermetically “sealed for live”
• Breaking capability not affected by gas pressure no locking-out of operation at low gas pressure
• No deterioration of contact resistance no monitoring of interrupting current required
• No low ambient temperature concerns no heaters required down to -25 C°
• No toxic decomposition products at the end of life time
… Spring-drive mechanism is maintenance free throughout is lifetime
• Opening time and speed is not affected by pressure and temperature
• No locking-out of operation at low oil pressure

Siemens generator switchgear Vacuum technology - competency
Siemens is the market leader for vacuum generator circuit breakers
• More than 2,400 total generator vacuum circuit breaker installed since 1990
• Delivery of > 19,000 vacuum interrupters for high-performance applications ≥ 63kA
• Core components and technologies used in > 25,000 circuit breakers p.a. worldwide.
Vacuum technology has well proven its benefits in medium voltage and is used today in 96% of all medium voltage circuit breakers. These benefits apply for generator applications as well
