Turkey, a country that embraces two continents, is a land of historic treasures from 13successive civilizations spanning thousands of years. The Western part of the city is in Europe, with the Eastern part in Asia, both divided by the magnificent watercourse known as theBosphorus. With a glorious past as the intellectual, cultural and political center of the world,Turkey remains today an extraordinary and cosmopolitan country. We begin and end in Istanbul

the former capital of three successive empires: Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman where thispast year the city enjoyed the role of 2010 European Capital of Culture. Throughout our tour, theemphasis on the abundance of natural and ancient wonders found in the countrys westernregion will simply take your breath away. And, our dates are ideal. We are catching the lateautumn weather while it is still pleasant for sightseeing, but without the crowds. It should beperfect for touring the archaeological sites, shopping in the bazaars, enjoying the cuisine and

just strolling the streets to soak up local culture.

Special Highlight : Hotel stays in Old City Istanbul, New City Istanbul and a Cave Hotel inCappadocia! On our tour you will get to know the two sides of Istanbul. We base in Old City atthe start of the tour, and finish in New City, giving you the chance to feel the best of both worlds.Historic Istanbul, or Old City, is home to innumerable museums, churches, palaces, grandmosques and bazaars. Across the harbor known as the Golden Horn, is the modern, cosmopolitan New City where fashion, arts and commerce abound. And in between, we addthe unique experience of staying in a cave hotel surrounded by the surreal landscape of Cappadocia.

    Women INspiring / Women INspired

Our tour will include several interesting WIN / WIN gatherings with local women who have aninspiring story to share. Some of the events we are planning include:

Meeting some of the women featured in the film, Voices Unveiled , directed by Binnur Karaevli. This acclaimed documentary explores the challenges of modern Turkish women asserting their identities in an Islamic society.

Day 2 Monday, November 7 Old City Istanbul

Breakfast at the HotelTour of Historic IstanbulFree Time for Lunch On OwnAfternoon Tour ContinuesDinner with Cultural Entertainment

We begin our day with a visit to the impressiveTopkapi Palace, residence of the OttomanSultans between the 16 th and 19 th centuries. The Palace is, literally, a maze of hundreds of rooms, garden-filled courtyards, richlydecorated chambers, pools and passagewayswhere the sultans and their court lived andgoverned. Other highlights include the ImperialTreasury, with its 86-carat diamond and a 7-pound emerald, plus the pleasure kiosks, thegilded Council Chamber and kitchens boastingexhibits of fine Chinese porcelain. In addition totouring the magnificent gardens and opulentsurroundings, we will also visit the ImperialHarem, the secluded quarters where the wives, concubines and children of the sultan resided.Following our tour of the Topkapi Palace, we will break for lunch in a nearby area that offersnumerous dining options for your selection. Then, we will continue on to the Blue Mosque.

With its massive central dome flanked by six slender minarets, the elegant Imperial Mosque of Sultan Ahmet I stands as the single most recognizable monument on the Istanbul skyline. Builtbetween 1609-1616, the enormous complex also included a hospital, public kitchen, marketplace, schools, a caravansary (roadside inn for travelers on the Silk Route), and theMausoleum of the Sultan. Its immense interior, flooded with sunlight streaming through 260windows, is decorated with more than 20,000 precious Iznik tiles detailing traditional flowers of Ottoman design. It is the deep blue glow of the tiles in sunlight that gives the building its name.

Next, we will visit the Byzantine Hippodrome and the Basilica Cistern, both situated a short walkfrom the Blue Mosque. The Hippodrome was the center of Byzantine life for 1000 years, wherechariot races and competitive athletic events took place. At the northern end of the Hippodrome, beneath a small park, lies the Basilica Cistern. Also known as The Sunken Palace, this reservoir is the grandest of all the hidden, Byzantine cisterns that lie below Istanbul. Covering over twoacres, and with 336 marble columns, the Basilica Cistern was notably filmed in a scene from theJames Bond movie From Russia With Love .

Our first stop today is the famed Church of the Divine Wisdom, better knownas Hagia Sophia or St. Sophias Basilica. Built by the Byzantine Emperor Constantine the Great in the fourth century, this was the greatest church inChristendom for a thousand years, and remains an architectural masterpieceto this day. Its immense dome rises nearly 200 feet above the ground and ismore than 100 feet in diameter. The Ottomans converted the basilica to amosque in the 15 th century, but today the Hagia Sophia serves as a publicmuseum, known for its majestic serenity and fine Byzantine mosaics.

An unforgettable cruise along the Bosphorus that majestic strait that links Europe and Asia is next on our agenda. From our private boat we will view the dramatic sights lining the woodedshores, including 19 th century mansions of the Ottoman elite, fanciful gingerbread palaces andhunting lodges of the Sultans, a bridge that was for a time the worlds longest, and a greatfortress called Rumeli Hisari that was built by Fatih the Conqueror. Its strategic location at thenarrowest point of the strait allowed for control of commercial and military traffic in preparationfor the siege of Constantinople.

We will leave Istanbul on a short flight to Cappadocia, Turkey's most visually striking region. Here you will find a wonderland of unusual geographic formations sprinkled with greenvineyards, fruit orchards and frescoed churches. Wind and rain have eroded the brittle volcanicrock to form rock cones, capped pinnacles and fretted ravines in colors that range from warmreds and golds, to cool greens and grays. To truly experience this surreal landscape, we willspend the next two nights in a cave hotel, the Yusuf Yigitoglu, located in Urgup, a town in theheart of Cappadocia. A restored 19 th century residence, the hotel is tastefully appointed in asetting carved from soft volcanic rock. Guest rooms are spacious and equipped with satellite TV,telephone, high-speed wireless internet, mini bar, safe, and hair dryer in the bathroom. Withineasy walking distance are restaurants, shopping, and a winery with scheduled tastings.

From the airport, we will go directly to visitKaymakli Underground City, one of manysubterranean towns extending seven or eightlevels into the earth. Constructed by peacefulfarmers who lived in the region centuries ago, these were originally meant as undergroundhideouts for early Christians and for othersfearing attacks by warlike tribes. The performance was originally a religious ritual done by Sufi Dervishes or Mevlevi, thefollowers of Mevlana Jelaleddin Rumi. Their spellbinding worship service , the Mevlevi sema , isdemonstrated while wearing long white dresses and whirling ecstatically to ancient Islamichymns. Depending on our schedule today, we may see this presentation before dinner.
