By Lerato SereroVANDERBIJLPARK.- A case of attempted murder is investigated by the Vanderbijlpark police fol-lowing an incident that occurred in the CBD on Friday afternoon.

It is alleged that one of the police vehicles was out on a routine patrol in the CBD when they saw a group of people gathered in front of a hardware shop in Hans Strydom street. Since it looked sus-picious the police decided to investigate further. On arrival they found a seriously injured off-duty paramedic (29) lying on the ground. It was appar-

ent that he was severely assaulted and the com-munity informed them that the suspect ran into the hardware shop after a community member managed to stop him from assaulting the victim further. There were also other paramedic person-nel busy treating the victim.

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Kinnie Steyn says that the police managed to arrest the fleeing suspect (36) and had to remove him from the scene as the community wanted to assault him. The suspect was taken to the

Vanderbijlpark SAPS and detained on a charge of attempted murder. The suspect is a truck driver from Thokoza, Johannesburg.

The victim sustained serious injuries to the head and was airlifted with a medical helicopter to a hospital in Alberton.

Police are investigating an allegation that the victim and the suspect had an argument about parking and that a steel pipe was used to assault the victim. The suspect will appear in the Van-derbijlpark Magistrate’s Court soon.

Dude, where’s my car? By Sonqoba Kunene SEBOKENG.- Police officers from Sebokeng and Evaton police precincts and those of the Flying Squad were hard at work on Friday as they recovered two hijacked vehicles – proving their mettle ahead of what is ex-pected to be a busy festive season.

In the first incident, a white Nissan Tiida was recovered in Kanana, Sebokeng. The vehicle had been hijacked in Evaton and when it was spotted by police officers, a chase ensued. Realising that they were cornered by several police vehicles, the hi-jackers dumped the vehicle in Kanana and fled on foot.

In the second incident, hard-working men and women in blue recovered another stolen vehicle, a panel van carrying cigarettes. Po-

lice spokesperson Colonel Maria Mazibuko says that one suspect was arrested on the scene. The bakkie was found on the Old Golden Highway near the Machaineng shopping center.

By Lerato Serero VEREENIGING.- The festive season is a season where by criminals feel that they can do as they please, particularly with women. One example is a man who is on the run after raping a mother and her daughter in Vereeniging recently. It is said that the mother and daughter were

Lost and lost innocencewalking in Vereeniging when they got lost and were not sure of the right di-rection that they should take to where they were destined. The rape occurred after the victims asked direction from the unknown man who was standing at a street corner. The suspect told them that it will be easy for them to

get to their destination because he was also going in the same direction. He led them in the direction of a nearby highway. Police says that the three walked through the bushes and suddenly the suspect stopped and turned to the victims. He demanded money and threatened them that if they don’t have money he is going to rape them. The mother started to cry and threw herself on the ground. The suspect continued threatening the mother as she cried and he took from his bag a gun which looked like a toy gun. The sus-pect raped the mother first, the daughter and then ran away. “This office is ap-pealing to members of the commu-nity to assist with informa-tion to bring the suspect to book. Anyone who might be having informa-tion that could assist po l i ce may contact the investigating officer, Detective Constable. Thabo Ram-oipone on 016 450 2500 or 082 839 6531,” says the police.

Vereeniging police have issued this identikit of a man that can help them in investigating a rape case that oc-curred recently.uk

By Mduduzi Mathebula EVATON. - Ephraim Phathedi was nearly killed while driving from Eva-ton West on the Golden Highway.

This route has turned into a poten-tially lethal hazard for any road-user.Phathedi narrowly escaped death on Thursday night when he was hit by a red car at a crossroad, capsizing his taxi, rolling it several times till it came to a grinding halt.

Phathedi, was on his way home from Johannesburg, says death nearly snared him in the blink of an eye. Phathedi says the red car just cut through the intersection, hit him on the side and threw him into the stream with the taxi upside down.

Passing motorists stopped to help and discovered that the driver of the red car was badly injured. It is alleged that he was driving recklessly while listening to loud music, which was

why he had not stopped at the inter-section. A passerby says the culprit is widely known for his recklessness.

The reckless driver of the red car has not won much sympathy from community members despite his in-juries. As far as they are concerned, he had flouted the law as set in K53 rules.

Phathedi, who works for a widely known businessman, says he feels that this might be a sign of bad luck for them since this is not the first time something like this has hap-pened.

“I thought I was going to die,” says an emotional Phathedi. “The taxi was turning continuously with me inside it. Thank God I’m alive. The bastard could have killed me.”

A case of reckless driving was con-firmed by late police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Jabulani Timane.

By Mduduzi Mathebula BOIPATONG.- A man lost his life on Monday evening after he was run over by a truck. The police have confirmed speculations that the victim was one of many scrap thieves operating near the robots in the area.

Apparently, Simon Shirinda (27) was trying to off-load scrap from a moving truck when he lost his footing, fell underneath the truck and the heavy duty vehicle crushed him to death. The incident occurred at around 18:00 and left onlookers and passengers in passing taxis in shock.

Police spokesperson, Constable Thembeka Koago says that a culpable homicide case is investigated. Koago says, “We have been warning these men for several months without suc-cess. We are now planning a joint op-eration with the members of Emfuleni traffic in order to stop these deaths.”

In recent weeks, the so-called scrap thieves have caused mayhem for road-users and police officers. One of them died in a similar incident when he lost his grip on a truck in motion and fell to his death. They have also been blamed for causing a fatal crash earlier in the year.

By Mduduzi Mathebula VEREENIGING.- A woman was scared to death on Thursday when their car, a “BMW” did not stop at the cross road intersection and collided with a Nissan van.

Motorists alleged that the acci-dent occurred because the couple occupying the car was arguing. This was apparent when they were still going at it after the accident. Apparently the couple was rushing to Vereeniging from Westernarea.

The Yellow BMW was travelling at a high speed as it was crossing the intersection at the Old Potchestroom Road. Un-fortunately there was a Nissan Van that was al-ready at the intersection as the BMW crashed into it injuring a woman.

When Vaal Weekly ar-rived at the scene the two cars where apart from each other while both drivers when confused, trying to make sense of what had happened.

This accident caused a huge traffic jam which forced the traffic department to deploy traffic officers to the scene.

The BMW driver says to Vaal Weekly he did not see the notice road signs on the side of the road, which made him free to drive fast on the road since he claims he was rushing in order to drop the woman and the child in Vereeniging and rush back to Westernarea.

Another crash before Cristmas!

By Lerato SereroVEREENIGING.- The driver of a Hyun-dai 1-ton truck sustained very serious injuries after a head on collision on Hout-kop Road in Vereeniging recently.

The Hyundai is believed to have crashed into the front of a heavy duty coal truck, leaving the driver, a man in his 30’s, entrapped in the driver’s seat of the Hyundai. ER 24’s spokesperson Vanessa Jackson says that how the accident ac-tually happened will need to be investi-gated but that the collision happened at the KlipRiver Drive and Houtkop Road intersection.

The Fire and Rescue workers used

their heavy duty equipment to cut away at the Hyundai in order to free the trapped driver. Paramedics then stabilised the man while the ER24 Discovery Medicopter was called in. The man was taken from the wreck-age almost an hour later and he was loaded into the waiting Medicopter for transport to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg. The man required ex-tensive treatment for severely broken bones and internal injuries.

The driver of the coal truck was left with minor injuries and he refused further treatment and left the scene with private transport.

By Sonqoba Kunene VANDERBIJLPARK.- Gauteng Commu-nity Safety MEC, Faith Mazibuko vis-ited Vanderbijlpark on Saturday where she was briefed about the state of crime in the Sebokeng Cluster by General Deliwe De Lange. Following her arrival at the police precinct, Mazibuko was joined by the Sedibeng District Munici-pality’s Public Safety MMC Mmakgomo Raikane and her Emfuleni counterpart Veli Mcera. General De Lange delivered a presentation which focussed on rape, domestic violence and child abuse cases

for the past six months in the Sebokeng Cluster (Sebokeng, Evaton, Orange Farms, The Barrage, Vanderbijlpark, Boipatong and Ennerdale policing pre-cincts). It emerged at the meeting that the Evaton was the leading station in the number of registered domestic violence cases in the Gauteng province. Other concerns raised by De Lange include the raping of men by other men and police officers involved in crime. “It is a fact we have to deal with: there are even police officers involved in criminal activities,” says De Lange.

By Sonqoba Kunene SEBOKENG.- The initiation season has started and it is usually at this time of year that several complaints of chil-dren going missing come to the fore.

Sebokeng SAPS spokesperson, Cap-tain Bheki Thwala says that the most recent case is that of a woman in Zone 20, Sebokeng who has reported her son missing on Monday after he was alleg-edly taken to an initiation school.

Sebokeng SAPS Community Policing Forum (CPF) Cluster Chairperson, Jabu Dlomo adds that the police sta-tions most affected by the initiation schools intake are Sebokeng, Evaton and Orange Farms where kidnapping and missing people cases are begin-ning to surface. “The problem is that most of these children are under aged

and between the ages of 11 and 12 years old.

On Friday, reports came through that a man was seriously injured after a fight between initiates in Boitu-melo, Sebokeng. This has become a common occurrence as the festive season approaches – that initiates form themselves into groups that often fight against each other upon returning from their respective initia-tion schools.

In De Deur, the police spokesperson in the area, Constable Ntshidiseng Phakoe says that the police have al-ready destroyed one illegal initiation school. “It is a huge problem. The parents are coming in numbers to report their missing children,” says Phakoe.

Kidnapping is a serious crime!Police recently destroyed an illegal initiation school in De Deur where youngsters were found and taken back to their parents amid a regional problem as traditional surgeons have been busy recruiting for their festive season intake.

The greatest sorrow

By Mduduzi Mathebula EVATON.- Vaal Weekly news- and the staff members are touched by the death of the recently appointed Evaton police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Jabulani Timane.

Timane passed away on Sunday when he shot his long-time partner and then turned the gun on himself.

Timane’s lover survived the shoot-ing.

Vaal Weekly had an interview with his station commissioner, Director Hester Bischoff.

“We have lost a real soldier, Timane was happy in the newly appointed role as the communication officer.

He promised to deliver, what he was appointed for.

As the Evaton Police Services we are very upset and we are sympathising with all who knew and worked with him,” says Bischof.

Vaal Weekly further spoke to the communication cluster Commander, Colonel Maria Mazibuko.

She says they have lost a hard worker and officer that loved his job.

“We have to make use of all the neces-sary resources which are applicable to us to use to our advantage," she says. She further asked police officers to find help if they feel like the walls are clos-ing in on them.

She concludes that in her cluster this year, this suicide is not the first but she hopes it to be the last.

You’d better start praying...By Mduduzi Mathebula ORANGE FARMS.- Angry Orange Farms community members appre-hended a young man in his 20s who allegedly raped a 77-year-old gogo on Sunday. It was in the early hours of the morning on Sunday in Extension 1 when an old woman was raped by a child who is young enough to be her great-grandchild. The suspect is alleged

to have forced his way into the house of the old woman. Then he further forced his sexual needs onto the old woman by raping her several times. The suspect did not end by raping the old woman, but also robbed her in the process. While he was looking for a way to escape the brave old woman screamed for help and the community heard her cry. Captain Keke Motsiri says police were quickly deployed to the scene and the suspect was already apprehended by the angry community.

COMMUNITY DIARY

By Lazarus DithagisoVANDERBIJLPARK. – Solomon Mth-walo, the former president of Wilde-beesfontein Evaton Community Or-ganisation (WECO) was shaking with rage following the committee members showing him the middle finger and slam-ming the door in his face. A dismissal of Mthwalo and some of the executive members began after he apparently failed to attend several meetings. A final resolution was taken at a meeting hosted at Soul Tsotetsi Sports Complex on September 18. Mthwalo was not the only one to be shown the door. The members proclaimed it, ‘The rise and fall of Mthwalo.’ Mthwalo rose to fame after being elected president of WECO in 2000. This was after the split between Thuys September, President of WECA (Association) and Mthwalo.

Initially WECA started in 1967 fight-ing for Weldebeesfontein Farms. After the split of Mthwalo and September, WECO was born, which started fighting for Land Claim in 2000.

According to the documents in the possession of Vaal Weekly, registered with Land Claims Court in Randburg dated October 6, “It was resolved that the purported mandate of Steven Ma-luleka and Mabutho Attorneys to act on behalf of WECO on the pending Land

Claim matter be with immediate effect terminated.”

It was resolved that Shabangu At-torneys (Bembe) together with their substitutes should be appointed again to proceed with the land claim case. The WECO executive structure is mandated to proceed with the claiming of land and Mahlaba substituting erst-while Mthwalo in all required court leadings. The new committee consists of two elected members including deputy secretary, F Tshomela and deputy chairperson N Mdwayi. The rest of the committee has served dur-ing the period of Mthwalo. “We have initiated the attorneys to deal with the matter in court while we try to sort out our differences” says Mahlaba. We are not the break-away group as alleged by the controversial spokesperson of Mthwalo, Miles Bhudu. However, the fuming Mthwalo has crossed fingers that he is still a leader and a king of WECO. Instead, WECO has threat-ened legal action against the break-away-group. Mthwalo called a public meeting recently to introduce some of his new committee members who will be replacing Mahlaba. He says he is the only person known by the Land Claim Court fighting for land.

HIV/Aids stats to be releasedJOHANNESBURG.- Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi will release the 2010 national antenatal HIV and syphilis survey on Tuesday. “The survey is used to estimate the national prevalence of HIV and syphilis infection among pregnant women and then establish HIV prevalence estimate among the adult population of 15- to 49-year-olds,” the department said. The study is expected to determine the geographical distribution pattern of the diseases among pregnant women who visited antenatal clinics at national and provincial level by both district and age groups. Last year, the 2009 survey found that the HIV-prevalence among pregnant women was estimated at 29.4%.

COP 17 delegates drink tap waterDURBAN. - There was minimum use of bottled water at Durban’s Albert Luthuli convention centre during the first day of an international climate change confer-ence on Monday. When delegates from countries where tap water is not regarded as clean were served water in jugs, they asked whether it was safe to drink. Most attendees had no problem swigging back the Adam’s Ale from a tap once it was explained to them the water was perfectly safe. The reduction of bottled water was one of Durban’s initiatives to help reduce the use of energy - and preparing bottled water uses a lot of energy, say activists.

Ministers don’t have to scan hand luggageCAPE TOWN. - President Jacob Zuma has instructed the government protocol unit to ensure that no minister is ever again obliged to put hand luggage through an airport scanner. He emphasised that under the Vienna Convention, VIPs such as ministers are afforded certain privileges and protections. The president referred to an incident in September when International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane missed a flight in Norway when she declined to put her handbag through a scanner.

Pooe: They are a joke!By Lerato SereroSEDIBENG.- The Pan Africanist Congress in the region is in the news again after a recent meeting by the party’s regional task team that resolved that its members, Apa Pooe and Abel Radebe should be removed from their posi-tions as councilors with the Sedibeng District Mu-nicipality.Speaking to the task team’s secretary, Oupa Shume-ni, he says that the PAC Regional List Conference dated 13 November 2011, resolved that Apa Pooe and Abel Radebe will be removed from the party’s representation at Sedibeng and Emfuleni Municipality under the following rea-sons; that Pooe manipulat-ed election processes for his own personal interest and undermined PAC members at regional level by appear-ing as number one, in both PR list Sedibeng and Emfu-leni Municipality. Accord-ing to a list that has been

sent to the IEC, Radebe will be removed from the Regional Secretary Gen-eral position because he also appeared twice on the PR list, number two at Emfuleni and, number four at Sedi-beng municipality.

The list states the fol-lowing concerns:

1. PAC is a political party and it is not gov-erned or managed by individuals but its mem-bers, structures and the constitution.

The mentioned friends above had violated dem-

ocratic principle, which as the party we believe in a “one man one vote.”

2. Members and elect-ed structures (BEC, s) were not part of decision making, but they were expected to mobilise and make sure that the party perform better in the 2011 elections

3. Therefore the PR list that was submitted to the IEC does not represent the views of members in this region but those of individuals.

When contacted for com-ment, Pooe says that the task team is a joke and that they are not recogn-ised by both the local and the national structure of the party.

“Their mandate has long passed it’s sell by date as they were only elected to form branches, so they are not a recognised structure within the party. Shumeni has since resigned from the party.

Brand new wheelchair for town heroine!By Mduduzi Mathebula EVATON.- It was last year when the Mavundla and Mokoena fam-ily lost everything in a fire: their house, clothes, and belongings. Through God’s grace they are still alive though they lost everything else, including Mokoena’s wheel-chair. On Saturday the fire fight-ers and community of Evaton West, including business people acknowledged Mokoena’s heroic deed after she saved herself and her grandmother.

Mokoena and her grandmother were both sleeping when the fire almost killed their family. Mokoe-na, with her disability screamed loud to wake her grandmother who jumped up and responded to her granddaughter’s call.

Mokoena was celebrated as a

brave woman despite the fact she is disabled. Businessman, Jurie Bester who donated a wheelchair to Mokoena says when he thinks of her, he becomes very emotional. “Mokoena has made me value my life and everyone in it.

Today we celebrate her as a hero-ine. She should know that we ad-mire her,” says Bester.

Mokoena was given gifts and she enjoyed spending time with strang-ers as she passed her love to every-one who was there.

Mavundla had no words to say when she thought about what could have happened if Mokoena did not wake her up.

Bongi Mokoena, a 21-year-old mentally and physical challenged young woman was cel-ebrated by the community for saving her grandmother.

We want but refuse help!By Sonqoba KuneneVANDERBIJLPARK.- David Gladile (61) and Marius Landman (45) have been sleeping side by side, sharing a mattress on Becquerel Street for four years.

The two men rely on handouts from their friends and strangers who often give them food and coins. Gladile says that he trav-elled from his hometown of Dover in the Free State Province to Vanderbijlpark with the hope of finding employment. During his interview with Vaal Weekly, it was clear that Gladile was in pain and when asked about this discomfort, he says, “I was ran over by a motorcycle recently and suffered injuries to my legs and that’s why I cannot walk properly.” Walking with the help of crutches, Gladile adds that all his family members and relatives have died.

Landman says that all his belongings were stolen including his Identity Document. “They came and robbed us in the night,” says

Landman, who explains that like Gladile, he also came to Vanderbijlpark looking for a job. Originally from New Castle in Kwa-Zulu Natala, Landman says that he has a son who is living in Cape Town. “We have been here for several years and it is not just us, there are two other guys who sleep here,” he says.

The Ward Councillor in the area, James Wright, who was present when Vaal Weekly interviewed the men and took their pictures, says that he has been begging the men to go to a place of safety he had organised for them without any success. “They refuse to go, they are not willing to move to a place of safety,” says Wright.

Gladile and Landman concede that they were offered shelter at a nearby center and continue to refuse to be moved. Johan Hei-nemann, one of the kind people who have been helping the homeless men with food over the years says that their situation is sad and painful.

By Marietjie Bothma and Sonqoba KuneneSEBOKENG.- Itumeleng Florence More died a shocking and brutal death – one that has left tongues wagging, eyes crying and many questions unanswered. This is after the remains of the 26-year-old were found outside a block of flats in Vanderbijlpark last Wednesday.

Sadly, it is also on that Wednesday that Vaal Weekly carried the story of her disappearance. At the time, Vaal Weekly published information that More’s family had launched a frantic search for their beloved daughter after she was last seen a week earlier, on Friday, November 18. She had told colleagues that she was waiting for a male friend and that was the last time she was seen alive. After five days, her body was discovered by a gardener who was going about his duties at a flat complex on Junker Street at around 08:00. More’s body was found in a big refuse bin and the police were immediately summoned to the scene.

Following this gruesome discovery, a suspect, Sithembiso Desmond Musukwini (29) was arrested. He has since appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Mag-istrate’s Court facing a charge of murder. The trial

was postponed to December 2 in order to allow further investigations into the case.

Sithembiso is the son of business mogul, Vely Musukwini, owner of popular tavern Velly’s Place in Zone 12, Sebokeng.

Colleagues, friends, family members and relatives who knew “Tumi,” as More was affec-tionately known, say that she was an outgoing person with a bubbly personality.

The manager of a financial institution where More used to work says, “Her death is hard to accept.” At the funeral in Kanana, Sebokeng on Sunday, all speakers on the programme ex-pressed their deepest condolences. Mourners came in their numbers as Pastor Lefa Pheto led the proceedings. When her coffin was taken out of the hearse moments before the procession headed to the Vanderbijlpark cemetery, several mourners were overcome by grief and some fell to the ground in shock. Born 01 February 1985, More leaves behind her father Dijara, siblings Lebogang and Mabasetsana and her child, Pabal-lo. At the time of her death, she was an employee of Orange Cash Loans in Vanderbijlpark.

God is our only hope!Phehello Mosala from Kanana, Sebokeng writes:

This letter is written in a tribute and loving memory of the late Itumeleng Florence More. “Make a chain,” wrote the prophet Ezekiel. “For the land is full of bloody crimes, and the city is full of violence.” These words were written more than 2 500 years ago and cannot be more true today than they were then. The conditions the prophet saw would get so bad that one brutal crime would follow another, just like a chain.

On this note, the surge of feeling for the slain Itumeleng More this past week has been a spontaneous, collective, religious act of a traumatised nation. This is a plea to our God Almighty: Reveal the spiritual dimension to us and make our lives meaningful. We need God’s intervention and vision as we have had enough of these barbaric acts.

I was personally sickened inside when news of Itumeleng’s tragic end reached me. Such tragedies are never easy to stomach. Why the massive amount of human suffering? Unless we search for God, we will continue to ask that ques-tion of ages from Brook Benton’s masterpiece – “Oh Lord, why Lord?” We need to unite as a nation.

Every year various global agencies, including the American Associa-tion for World Health, take the lead in coordinating this day and in educating people about HIV/AIDS, which has claimed millions of lives in the years since the first AIDS cases were diagnosed. The message here should be loud and clear: at this age and time let us stop being ignorant. Let us give ourselves time to learn more about this disease, to have compassion for those that are suffering from it and to finally practice the principle of ABC (Abstain, Be Faithful, Condomise). Fellow South Africans, let us respect, love and live.To end this all, we should know that if we are not infected we are definitely affected…

On poignant note, Vaal Weekly bids farewell to our Editor Nthabiseng More who moves to greener pastures after a loyal six years with this publication. This is her last message to our loyal readers: "All living creatures have life cycles and so do all processes that human beings go through. This rings true as I thank all Vaal Weekly, Sebokeng Vision, Evaton Vision and Home Grown readers for welcoming and embracing our publications in their homes during my term as editor of these prestigious titles. I truly enjoyed the posi-tive responses as well as constructive words which, you, my dear readers gracefully contributed to make my time at Mooivaal Media valuable. I am confident that the publications will continue to enjoy your unwavering support as I move on to a new chapter in my career. I wish you only good things this festive season. Thank you, ngiyabonga Sedibeng! My strength cometh from The Lord.”

Rantlo Mlangeni from Zone 7B writes:Jealousy is destroying this beautiful land. Close friends hate each other and serious and strong relationships and marriages end up in tragedy all because of jealousy. South African jails are packed to the rafters because of jealousy. The graveyards are chock-a-block because of jealousy. High-ranking soldiers and police officers hate each other because of jealousy.

Children become orphans and women become widows be-cause of jealousy. Children become victims of abuse because of jealousy.

Can the child afford for YOU to raise them?

Bongani Simelane from Groenpunt Maximum Correc-tional Center writes:There are lot of people who do not have respect for the art of parenting. I ask myself, why are these people making babies if they are not ready to be parents? It is heartbreak-ing to see stories of cruel mothers who have dumped their newborn babies. Our sisters do not think before they say they love somebody. A secret lover will do you no good but will only bring isolation and hatred. I can say that life is dull

without dreams and that a child’s future is doomed without a role model. I despise the cruelty of separation and I hate the boldness of death as it takes away those you love who are the light and pillars of your life. Don’t forget, nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent.

What is happening to our children?

Solomon Gibson from Groenpunt Correctional Center writes:I am shocked and worried by the youth of Mzansi. They are careless about issues that affect Africa and the global village. They are only committed to lifeless entertainment such as drug abuse, alcohol and crime. It is better for the leadership of the ANC Youth League to take up a program of motivating the youth before it is too late. This country needs to create job opportunities and fight crime.

Let us protect our women and children

Star Hlongwane, Branch Secretary of the ANC's Johan Heyns Phahamang Branch, writes:25 November to 10 December marks the 16 Days of Activism against violence and abuse directed against women and chil-dren, under the battle cry/theme “From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World”. The struggle against violence against women and children in our society cannot be taken out of the violent context we are in. For Johan Heyns Phahamang Branch (Ward 9 & 10), this means that on the one hand we must ac-celerate and deepen our campaign for a more equal and caring society, in fact a Socialist Society. On the other hand, we must try and build it now by challenging gender stereotypes and arguing for gender equality and an end to all discrimination.

Boo!Do we control our fear or does it control us? As individuals we have different personalities and ways in which we deal with fear. Sometimes we even fear ‘fear’ itself! Mduduzi Mathebula finds out how people deal with fear and what they fear in life. Vaal Weekly readers share their phobias and terrors!

Lerato Tshabalala from Evaton says that the Bible says that we should fear God. Tshabalala says he is not scared of anything but God. Though he says witchcraft makes him a little uncomfortable.

Moipone Mahlatsi from Sharpeville is afraid of crime and death. She is unable to relax for one moment, and she is always alert and on guard.

Alex Mahlatsi from Sharpeville, “My greatest fear is pride. I don’t like people who look down upon others,” says Mahlatsi.

Lebohang Sibeko from Evaton says, “ I am very afraid of going to jail. I heard a lot of bad things about jail and that is the last place that I would want to end up!”

Jacobeth Mofokeng from Zone 13, Sebokeng writes:The brutal killing of Itumeleng Florence More has shocked the entire Sedibeng region and my heartfelt condolences go out to her family. It is with regret that we experience such a brutal death when were just beginning to forget the brutal death of another young person who was killed and mutilated in Polokong last December.

What kind of human being does such a thing? As I listened to speakers and priests at the funeral on Sunday, I began to understand why Vaal Weekly ran an article earlier this year which asked the burning question: Are we becoming a nation of violent and merciless deaths? So many people have lost their lives in the most painful of ways in recent months in this region and we need political will from our leaders to stand up and condemn these crimes at once!

Itumeleng’s story touches us all!

Celebrating world Aids Day Farewell Nthabi!December 1 of each year should be marked as an important day in the lives of every South African. It should be a date about remembering those who have died, those who are suf-fering and finally those who are still living with the dreaded disease called HIV and Aids. Although only a day has been set aside in a year, we should continuously remind ourselves about the disease and about how best we can take necessary precautions. This piece is all about celebrating those who have taken the bold step of knowing their status, those that have decided to live healthy lives and those that have decided not to ignore their situation, but to learn more and more about this sickness so as to help themselves and others. In order to promote more social tolerance and a greater aware-ness of HIV and AIDS, the World Health Organisation (WHO)

ARIES (Mar. 21-April 20)You may be on an emotional high this week. Nevertheles, you may not welcome this because rela-

tions with authority figures are a bit stiff and dare we say unfriendly? Don’t expect too much from others this week.

Pay no attention to those who discourage your travel plans

or your ideas about the media, publish-ing, medicine and the law. People are too quick to condemn and criticize this week.

Issues concerning bills, taxes, inheritances and shared property might be discouraging this week.

This is a poor week to sit down and decide how to share things with others.

Be patient with partners and close friends this week because others feel withdrawn or shut-

down. For example, they might feel upset about imagined criticisms.

Everything at work seems to be drudgery this week. Every job has

its aspect of drudgery, even the best job in the world (whatever that would be). Don’t let this get you down.

Children might feel like an in-creased burden or responsibility

this week. Well, wake up and smell the coffee. Children are a burden, no matter how much we love them.

This is not an ideal week to talk about important subjects with

parents or older family members. Their response will simply be, “Talk to the hand.”

Remember Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh? “My birthday? It will prob-ably rain.” Ever the pessimist. It’s

very easy for you to fall into pessimism and negative thinking this week.

Your finances might be crunched this week. Many Sagittarians are disappointed about cash flow is-

sues or perhaps something you own. For example, you might lose something.

Pessimism is rampant this week. Nevertheless, the Moon is in

your sign and this gives you a tiny advan-tage over all the other signs. (Always take whatever you can get.)

Many of you will feel lonely and cut off from others this week.

Don’t worry about this. It’s the spores in the air. After next week, these feelings will be gone! Abracadabra!

You might feel disappointed in a friend this week or vice versa. Do not let this disappointment with

others (possibly even a group) cause you to change your future goals.

SEXY OF THE WEEK

By Zacharia NaleSASOLBURG.- Mozag is one of the local up and coming Hip-Pop groups that is set to take South African music by storm.

This is a group of five talented artists from Sasolburg who came together to form a band early this year. During an exclusive inter-view with Vaal Weekly’s entertain-ment “guru” – Zacharia Nale, the group believes that the role they play in the lives of youngsters in Sasolburg area is big. The group’s spokesperson Maxydo who is also a Karabo FM presenter says one of the group’s objectives is to dis-tract young people from crime and drugs by keeping them busy. “We want to use music to change lives of many young people in the area and one of the young people we discovered through Karabo FM is Ndyebo Sikweza, who is 14 years old. The boy is very talented and there is no doubt that he is going places with music,” says Maxydo. The motor-mouth artist says they have already produced a single called “Ride with us.” They say they intend to produce an album that will come out next year Janu-ary. The group is also excited as they were invited to perform at the forthcoming Annual Fezile Dabi Jazz Festival. Maxydo says this is great news for the group as it will be their first time sharing the stage with high profile artists of the continent. As this is not enough, the group is also invited to perform at the Lesotho Music Festival on December 28.

Stop and think before you drink! By Sonqoba KuneneSEBOKENG.- The festive season is upon us and it is during this time that money is wasted and alcohol is abused. In an effort to highlight these issues, the members of the Sebokeng Liquor Traders Forum Against Crime took to the streets on Friday morning and marched on Moshoeshoe Street. Joined by scores of commu-nity members, the march started at the Zone 11 Post Office and headed to the Thabong Shop-ping Center near the Sebokeng Hostel. Led by traffic officers, the marchers then proceeded to the Zone 14 Community Hall where a briefing was held. Sebokeng SAPS Community Policing Forum (CPF) Chairperson and Coordinator of the Liquor Traders Forum Against Crime, Bikie Nketle says that the purpose of the dem-

onstration is to create awareness of alcohol and substance abuse, which is rife during De-cember. “We also wanted to improve relations between the police and liquor traders as this partnership is crucial, particularly now that we are in the 16 Days of No Violence Against Women and Children,” says Nketle.

Nketle adds that the members of the forum also took time to listen to the concerns of ordinary residents which included underage drinking, alcohol based crime and the impor-tance of saving money in December for the New Year. Representatives from the Gauteng Liquor Board were also in attendance and they shared with the guests all the important infor-mation on acquiring liquor licenses including the paperwork involved.

The nationwide 16 Days cam-paign seeks to highlight the scourge of women and child abuse and runs annually from November 25. Police officers in Sebokeng came out in numbers to support the roadblock which saw several vehicles stopped and searched near the Masoheng robots. Senior members of the Sebokeng SAPS and traffic of-ficers from the Emfuleni Local Municipality also made their presence felt as they pulled over motorists to check for roadworthi-ness, permits and licenses. One of the officers, Constable Maria Molefe called on all residents of Sebokeng and surrounding areas to do their part in curbing the spread of violence against women and children.

East and West says our home’s the best!

By Sonqoba KuneneVANDERBIJLPARK.- Emfuleni Local Mu-nicipality Executive Mayor, Greta Hlong-wane welcomed an Asian delegation from the Quzhou Municipal People’s Government on Monday at the Riverside Hotel.Upon arrival, the Chinese delegation received a warm welcome in the form of a traditional dance which was beautifully executed by the mem-bers of the Zibambisene – a cultural group under the directorship of local musician Xoli

Nosenga. Chaired by Emfuleni’s Communica-tions Manager, Paseka Rakosa, the gathering saw MMC Sello Pitso and other officials sit-ting side by side with their colleagues from the Quzhou Municipal People’s Government.Mayor Hlongwane started proceedings by informing the visitors about plans to turn the Sedibeng District Municipality into a Metro by 2016. Hlongwane also announced plans to work with the German government to create an industrial hub and the Regional Sewer

Works Project, scheduled to start next year.

Following a brief welcoming message from Municipal Speaker Msebenzi Gqelosha, Emfuleni’s Deputy Municipal Manager for Economic Development and Plan-ning Dr. Hein Wiese delivered a presentation which included the state of the local economy. Wiese noted that unemployment cur-rently sits at 71.8% in Emfuleni. “We have a dream of a big city with a bridge and a river,” says Wiese, turning the focus on the free land that is available for development in Emfuleni.

Wiese’s presentation also cov-ered ways to grow the local econo-my including plans for a logistical hub. “We are also looking into the purification of our water and hydro power generation,” says Wiese. The mayor of the Quzhou

Municipal People’s Government Shang Qing also spoke on be-half of his delegation which con-sisted of municipal officials and representatives from corporate companies back home in China. Qing says, “We have a rich cul-tural background and our people work and study hard and they are friendly as well. I wish for the two cities to work together.” The meeting ended on a high note as members of both delegations exchanged gifts.Emfuleni has strong ties with the Eindhoven Municipality and recently this partnership led to joint programs in the South African municipality. With talks that another Chinese municipality is due in the coun-try on Wednesday, it is safe to say that Emfuleni takes direct foreign investment opportunities seriously.

By Mduduzi Mathebula VEREENIGING.- Tshidi Nkemele is a young woman with a vast heart and the mind of an angel decided to put others before herself. Rehauetsoe Old Age Home hosted a get together on Sunday for the Elders.

This was very special for the elders, who say that they are not used to be treated as such and this really

shows that they are not just dumped at the old age, but that they are still loved.

There were a number stakeholders who came to grace the event. Some were from the Vaal University of Tech-nology FM, and the community at large. Nkemele says they started with only three elders, but today they are running an old-age-home of 15 elders with a number of staff members. She says for them to see people from out-

side is an honour they will cherish this event for the rest of their lives.

Gogo Thembi Mthimkhulu, an elder declared her happi-ness and the love she gets from the home. She proudly says she love seeing visitors. She further says being old does not mean she is a nobody or does not have a life. The Ndiphewe Mahlangu, gave a motivational speech to the elders and young people that we should love and treasure them.

“They are our parents, we should show them the love they have granted us all these years, she says.” Stanley Leseane quoted from the Bible saying “You should respect elders in order for your days to be increased in life." Gogo Lipolelo Mokonyane showcased her talent, reciting the attendees a short story (tshomo/ Ingane kwane).

Young at heart!

Since 1978 Rev.T.A. Ralekholela and Gospel Fire Ministries has been travelling nationally and internationally proclaiming the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Many souls have come to know Jesus as their Lord and Saviour, the blind received sight, the crippled walked, the deaf heard, barren wombs bore sons and many were delivered from evil spirits. We thank God that these miracles are still happening even today and will continue until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Reminiscing on the past years in ministry we are so humbled by the favour God has shown us because it is not by our own strength that we are

where we are today but by the grace of God.Even though people did not eagerly anticipate

the year of 2011 as they did 2010, not many prophecies were spoken concerning this year as they were for 2010 and 2012, it has nonetheless proved to be a year of God’s favour. We visited Botswana, Lesotho, and the North West Province filling stadiums as we quenched the thirst that the people have for Jesus.

We are closing off the year with the annual Gathering of Eagles Conference as we celebrate 31 years in ministry. We give God all honour and glory as His fire continues burning in Africa and the world.

Arise and shine for your Lord has come!

Jumping castles in true fairy tales!

By Sonqoba KuneneEVATON.- The Sedibeng Sa Bophelo Drop-in Center in Phase Four, Bev-erly Hills held its annual year-end party on Saturday. The organisation works with orphaned and vulnerable children and uses the St. Anthony Catholic Church in the area as its base. Children and elderly members of the community visit the center from Monday to Friday for food. To date, Sedibeng Sa Bophelo has over 120 children on its books and runs its programs without any funding support from the government. Speak-ing to the organisation’s Mirriam Sekhosana, she says that with the support of the church, its congrega-tion and members of the structure’s committee, they were able to organise jumping castles and free meals for the children for the year-end party. The children also received food parcels and stationery packs which will ease the burden on their guardians to provide for them. “We are happy as the children were also handed party packs which made them feel really special and I would like to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude to all those who offered a helping hand to the children and our organisation,” says Sekhosana.

By Mduduzi Mathebula VEREENIGING.- Deliver-ance Gospel Mission Inter-national honoured four best students who completed the deliverance classes that took about five months. The cel-ebration was held on their church premises in Vereenig-ing. The consecration was led by the head of the house, Pas-tor Matthews Sogunro from Nigeria. He elaborated on the importance of the deliverance course and why it is needed for a born again Christian to make a study of this sub-ject. Sogunro says the four month course was devided into different segments. He says there were 20 students who attended the deliverance course, but only four students managed to push themselves to the end. According to So-gunro, the four month course is very important to the saints, to be delivered from captive influences like religiousness, culture and life at large. He says deliverance is about the transformation of the soul and spirit. Sogunro says that even though we do not rea-lise it, some pastors, bishops, worshipers and other workers leading the church are still bound to their ways of life and dealing with matters. Deliver-ance classes are very impor-tant to the Christians in order for them to get delivered from their past and their souls to be free from the captive operation of the devil. The celebrated four students who made it are Puleng Tshabalala, Kokotjie Tsiri, Jeremiah Mabaso and Gift Mashie.

They are basically bringing back Apartheid!By Lerato SereroSEDIBENG.- “What a sad day for the democracy of South Africa,” says COPE Caucus Leader in Gauteng, Ndzipho Kalipa. This after two hun-dred and sixty four members of the ANC voted in favour of the Information Bill in National Assem-bly recently. Kalipa says that with the passing of this bill, South Africa’s press freedom and its long-fought-for democracy will all be in vain. He adds that the ANC refuses to consult the public in a free and fair manner and will not listen to civil society movements, public representatives, media houses and constitutional activists and therefore they are openly violating the public’s right to know the truth. “This bill goes against

everything that our nation’s father, Ntate Nel-son Mandela and all the other freedom fight-ers fought for. I am sure that influential black South African journalist, author, and outspo-ken critic of the apartheid government, Percy Qoboza is turning over in his grave today for the shame enforced upon South Africa’s press by the ANC. It is highly ironic that as the ruling party’s centenary looms, their accord to vote in unison for the Protection of State Information Bill now mimics the attitude and dictatorship of the Apartheid regime. The ANC is naive to believe that they can easily place a gag order on the masses; should the bill be passed, we shall meet the ruling party in the Constitutional Courts,” says Kalipa.

Some sun for Moshate’s seedlings! By Sonqoba KuneneVANDERBIJLPARK.- The Af-rican National Congress (ANC) has taken 60 orphans from the Moshate Secondary School in Zone 17, Sebokeng under its wing in its attempt to push back the frontiers of poverty.

These learners were treated to a special outing to Caravan Park, Vanderbijlpark on Fri-day in a social responsibility program initiated by the ANC, working hand in hand with the school’s governing body. The rul-ing party’s Sebokeng West Zon-al Chairperson, Sello Pitso says that project came about after the ANC Youth League under-took a door-to-door campaign in ward two and came across sev-eral households where children, who are learners at the Moshate Secondary School, had lost both parents. “The Youth League then relayed this information to us and we made arrangements with the school principal and the SGB to help,” says Pitso. On Friday, the excited learners were served breakfast at the

school before taking a trip to Caravan Park where more food and entertainment was waiting for them. Following lunch and brief motivational talk, the children had the opportunity to mingle with the SGB members and ANC officials responsible for the project. More importantly, the children walked away from the event smiling after they were handed food par-cels. Pitso adds, “It takes a village to raise a child. We wanted to show Ubuntu and let these children know that we are here for them. We are also looking into helping them with school uniforms from next year.” Ward two coun-cilor, Mamokho Mntambo and ANC’s Sebokeng West Zonal Secretary, Vuyani Sotsu were also present. Social activist and African People’s Conven-tion’s (APC) Patrick Sindane also offered his support to the initiative, seeing as he is a member of the school’s governing body.

By Mduduzi Mathebula EVATON.- It was in 2006 when the Eva-ton Plaza was officially opened under the leadership of Velile Mkhontwana for the community of Evaton and the surrounding area. This year the ever growing Evaton plaza celebrated its birthday turning five years in existence. Speaking to the centre manager, Koos Mofokeng he says that what he saw on Saturday was out of this world. The centre hosted over 15 000

consumers on Saturday which was good for business and the centre. He says for the centre to turn five years is a privilege for them as a business and the management to have had so much success. To show their appreciation the centre presented attendees with free gifts. Mofokeng says they started with 20 shops five years back, but today they have 300 shops in the centre. He further says he would like to acknowledge the Evaton community and the surrounding area for their support.

SEDIBENG.- The Commu-nity Correctional Component in conjunction with Tough-est Minds, embarked on a successful road-show to visit local schools and prisoners recently. The Community’s Correctional Component which consists on ex-convicts saw it necessary to educate the school learners about life in prison as well as the consequences of drug abuse. Some of the schools that these two organisations visited, include Thito-Tito Secondary School, Botebo-Tsebo Second-ary School and many others. The organisations also visited local prisoners such as Groen-punt Correctional Services, Sasol Correctional Services and Leeuof Correctional Ser-vices. The Toughest Minds Chairman, Mzwakhe Mosibi says the maim aim of the road-show was also to prepare the prisoners psychologically when they come out of prison so that they can be able to face the outside the world. “We want to help the prison-ers so that they can adjust to the outside world as soon as they come out of prison.

It is difficult for the community to accept the ex-convicts as soon as they are released from prison. So we want to help them to understand that it will not be easy for the community to welcome them. Mosibi also warns the youth about abusing substances such as nyaope because it destroys their cognitive abilities. He says if these young people knew how nyaope demolished brain cells they would not use it.“It is our responsibility to save our youth and ensure a bright future for them. We want to see tomorrow’s leaders, not criminals. We want to thank all the people who made this campaign a success.

VAAL ECHOES OF LOVE

News[18] Vaal Weekly, 30 November - 6 December 2011

By Zacharia NaleEVATON.- In a turn of events – after dumping Pooe Festive Soccer Tourna-ment, the Emfuleni Local Municipal-ity has reconsidered its decision. This was after Weekly Sport ran the story under the headline ‘Phew! Pooe still going strong!’ whereby the tournament organiser, Khaole “Kgogi” Pooe claims that the municipality has withdrawn from financing this popular festive soc-cer tournament. However, on Monday Pooe called this newspaper to inform us that the municipality has decided to continue financing the tournament. According to Pooe, after the article he had a meeting with the municipality in which they informed him about their decision to continue to associate them-selves with the tournament. “I am very excited because the municipality will

continue assisting as they did in previ-ous years. They approached me after the article appeared in the newspaper and I explained my frustration to them and they agreed to continue supporting this tournament. I am happy and I want to thank the Mayor Gretha Hlongwane because this tournament played a sig-nificant role in the lives of the local youngsters, especially at this time of the year. I also want to thank Weekly Sport because many people were concerned after reading that the municipality has withdrawn from the tournament,” says Pooe. Meanwhile, Pooe has revealed that the junior category will start with their tournament programme this coming weekend. The teams are invited to at-tend the meeting scheduled to take place at the Pooe Bottle Store on Wednesday at 17:00. And we’re

back in the game!

The jun ior soccer teams are expected to start with the Pooe Festive Soccer Tourna-ment programme this coming weekend.

Give us some more of Samora!

Sports Beat wants to high-five the person who decided to appoint former Premier Soccer League referee, Jonas “Samora” Nhlapo to officiate in the Vaal Milling Promotion League. I know some local football administrators would question Nhlapo’s appointment but the truth of the matter is that everyone deserves a sec-ond chance. For example, it was highly motivational for our youngsters to be officiated by a high profile referee like Nhlapo. How can our football suffer having experienced referees like Nhlapo who still loves this game? The man is still passion-ate about refereeing and he definitely needs our help and support to pick up the pieces. He is or should I say was one of the most experienced refer-ees to have emerged in South African football. Truth be told, Nhlapo was a victim of a power

struggle in the Safa national referees committee. He was made to pay for other people’s mistakes. There was profes-sional jealousy which saw Nhlapo being “suspended” but the man was never found guilty as far as I know. Not long ago, Weekly Sport ran an article where by one of the local talented referees by the name of Jabu Mkhwanazi decided to quit refereeing be-cause of the same politics that led to Nhlapo’s “suspension.” Those who suggested that Sports Beat – blew the PSV missing equipment story out of proportion – must go and jump in the “Dlomo Dam.” If there are people who still will not believe that the soccer balls that were used dur-ing this programme’s soc-cer coaching clinic were not missing, then show us where they are!
