1 Executive Summary
The quality of service (QoS) is the capability of a service provider to meet the demands of
users. For network services, the QoS relates to factors such as the bandwidth, latency, and
packet loss rate. The network service quality can be adjusted based on eSight QoS to reduce
network congestion and packet loss, implementing an appropriate QoS for different services
such as voice, video, and data services.
eSight QoS is a QoS-based traffic monitoring tool. It measures the network performance
counters such as the actually consumed traffic, discarded traffic, excess traffic, and traffic
efficiency for interfaces configured with traffic policies.
eSight QoS provides the following functions:
QoS traffic monitoring
Dashboard-based QoS data representation
Historical QoS data representation

2 Introduction
The IP network bears an increasing number of various services. The enterprise network traffic
needs to be adjusted to implement the following purposes:
Prevent network congestion and packet loss
Provide dedicated bandwidth for enterprise users
Meet diversified QoS requirements of different services
Currently, the IP network is confronted with the following challenges in operation and
maintenance (O&M):
Network performance monitoring mechanisms are incomplete and cannot generate
performance deterioration prewarnings.
Proper QoS cannot be provided for different services.
eSight QoS periodically checks the QoS of services on the network and displays QoS data
through historical data diagrams, alarms, and reports. This provides quantitative network
quality data and helps network maintenance personnel to deploy QoS policies properly.

1. Maintenance personnel deploy the QoS policy for various services running on the IP
network such as voice, video, and data services based on the site scenario.
2. Maintenance personnel find network devices for which the QoS policy is deployed and
create QoS monitoring tasks in eSight.
3. eSight collects service quality data based on the configured interval.
4. Maintenance personnel view the historical data, alarms, and reports to check the service
quality.

3.2 Implementation
3.2.1 Process of Collecting and Representing Service Quality Data
The traffic classifier, behavior, and policy have been configured for devices, and traffic policy
has been applied to interfaces.

1. Add a device to eSight.
2. eSight reads the device MIB information to obtain the traffic policy, classifier, and
behavior information.
3. If the function of automatically creating the QoS template is enabled, eSight
automatically creates a task for collecting QoS counters.
4. eSight periodically accesses devices to obtain service performance data and stores the
obtained data to the eSight database.
5. eSight displays the collected top N data on the dashboard for maintenance personnel.
6. Maintenance personnel set the time segment and view historical data through line charts
and stack areas.

Monitor service quality of
each QoS queue in each
channel
Two enterprise regions are connected to the wide area network (WAN) through routers A and
B. Routers A and B are configured with a QoS policy respectively. Voice streams are
transmitted through the EF queue to meet requirements of low latency. Video streams are
transmitted through the AF queue to ensure that they are transmitted with a high bandwidth.
Data streams are transmitted through the BE queue to send service data that does not impose
high requirements on QoS. The traffic and bandwidth efficiency of each queue can be
monitored based on eSight QoS.
To create a QoS performance monitoring task, perform the following steps:
Step 1 Choose Monitor > Monitoring Settings > Performance Collection Task, as shown in
Figure 3-3.

Step 2 On the Performance Collection Task page, click Create. The page for creating performance
tasks is displayed, as shown in Figure 3-4.

Step 3 In the Set parameters step on the displayed page, set the collection task name, collection
period, and description.

Step 4 Select a performance counter template. In the Select an index template step, select a
template from the Index template drop-down list. You can click View index details to view
the counters contained in the template.
Step 5 Select resources.
Based on the types of selected performance counter templates, resources can be selected By
group, By device, or By object. Buttons next to the resource selection mode also vary
according to the selected performance counter template.
The following uses the Preconfigured QoS CAR counter template as an example to describe
how to select resources. The Preconfigured QoS CAR counter template allows resources to be
selected by group and object.
To collect statistics on a specified QoS counter group, click Select group to select
resources.
a. In the Select resources step, click By group.
b. In the Select QoS counter group dialog box, select QoS counter groups.
c. Click OK.
Figure 3-5 Selecting resources by group to create a QoS monitoring task
Select object applies to a small number of resources or a large number of device types.
a. In the Select resources step, click the ROOT node in the navigation tree on the left.
b. In the Select Measurement Object dialog box, select devices and ports.
c. Click. OK.

Step 6 On the Performance Collection Task page, click OK.
After the performance collection task is created, eSight collects QoS traffic data based on the
configured period. Users can query historical QoS traffic data or view QoS data in dashboards
on the QoS Management page.

The QoS dashboard displays the top 5–20 tasks with the highest QoS performance counters,
which helps you find regions where network quality degrades.

QoS traffic monitoring
eSight QoS periodically generates network traffic monitoring and analysis reports based
on the traffic classifier. These reports help maintenance personnel to learn about the
network traffic distribution.
QoS configuration verification
eSight QoS can authenticate the consistency between the actual network configurations
and the network plan, and provide the configuration scheme effect report.
