From the Desk of the Cabinet Secretary

Welcome to the 2019-2020 Lions year! Well, it appears that my “year with training wheels” has finished! I would like to thank all those Lions who helped me during my year as Assistant Cabinet Secretary, their guidance and advice has been im-measurable. I would also like to thank DG Dennis for offering me this opportunity to serve as YOUR Cabinet Secretary for 2019-2020. As you would all be aware, there have been a few problems with Lions gaining access to the Your Lion Account, hopefully by now most of these issues have been rectified for you all. However, if you are still experiencing difficulty, please do not hesitate to let me know. For those of you who attended the Club Develop-ment Days, thank you for giving up your time, and I hope that the Club Secretary Forums were of value to you. As I expressed in the forums, I am always available to assist with any queries and if I am unable to give you an answer straight away, I will endeavour to get back to you promptly with the information you re-quire. At the time of writing this, our District still has just under 500 Lions Members who do not have an email address (and some recorded incorrectly), in-correct phone numbers, addresses and date of birth, entered against their record in MyLCI. One of my goals for this Lions year is to get all these rec-ords updated as it is imperative that this infor-mation is accurate to allow the administration of our District to run efficiently. I look forward to working with all Club Secretaries and the District Cabinet Team over the following year. Lee-Ann Anselmo Cabinet Secretary [email protected]

Shirley’s Snippets After a tour of Italy (Rome, Florence and Venice), DG Dennis and I will be attending the International Convention in Milan, Italy, where we will complete our District Governor requirements before our return to Australia. Thank you to Lion Nick for organising the Partners’ tours as part of the Cabinet weekends. These have been interesting, giving us Partners the opportunity to appreciate the local history, cafes and wineries. Best wishes to IPDG Biddy and Lion Nick in your future endeavours. I am looking forward to meeting all the Lions and Partners as we visit each Club during the year, and hosting all the Cabinet Members’ Partners on the Partner Tours. I am looking forward to catching up with old and new friends at the District Changeover in Camperdown.

V2 NEWS July 2019

Why Do We Lose Members? Member feedback is important, both to you and the District. We must know why we are losing Members. To date surveys have indicated four primary areas. Failure to work together as a team – Political and personal difference MUST be left outside of the meeting room. Personal differences can lead to poor communication and dissatisfied Members. We must learn to share the load and work together towards the same end. WE ARE A TEAM. Poor Meeting Quality - Lengthy, boring, unruly and uncoordinated meetings, poor chairmanship and the lack of agendas are some of the reasons why. Harmful Club Dynamics - Again those political, selfish and sometimes overbearing is-sues (eg poor attitudes towards new Members). Remind the Members of the Lions Ethics. Lack of involvement - People join to be involved - involve them!

DEVELOP THE GROUND RULES FOR YOUR MEETINGS REMEMBER ME? I'm the bloke who was asked to join the Club. I'm the bloke who paid twenty-five bucks to join, stood up in front of all of you and promised to be a loyal and faithful Lion. I'm the fellow who came to every meeting since that time, but no one paid any atten-tion to me. I tried several times to be friendly to some other fellows, but they all had their "buddies" that they had to talk to and sit next to. I hoped very much that someone would have asked me to take charge of the last fundraising project, but no one asked me. I wanted very much to do the job but no one noticed my hand when I volunteered. When I missed my first meeting because my wife was sick, no one at the next meeting asked me where I was. Gosh, I guess it didn't matter much to them whether I was present or not! So I decided to stay home and watch TV on the next meeting night. The following meeting I attended. Yet again, no one asked me where I was at the last meeting. You might say that I'm a good bloke, a good family man, that I hold a responsible job, and love my community. And you know who else I am? I'm the bloke who never came back! MUCH NEEDED EXPANSION TO CURRENT PREMISES AT VERDON

IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA

This is the exciting news released at MD Convention at Geelong early in May, and above are the Artist’s images of the planned expansions, showing the enlargement and renovation of the existing Administration Building and the overall extensions to the Training Areas and State-Of-The-Art Kennel complex to house 50 dogs and two purpose built training houses. Alterations will be completed in four stages to allow the staff to continue working, training and delivering dogs with minimum disruption to routine. Stage One (The Administration Building) is expected to commence in 2021 with total project completion five years from that date. The Lions Clubs of Australia will not be asked to fund this building project, we are sourcing Corporate funding. However, if any Clubs chooses to make a donation to the Building Project, it would be gratefully accepted. Our Annual Appeal will still be conducted early each year as we still need the support and donations from your Clubs to finance the acquisition and training of dogs. City of Horsham Collection

The City of Horsham Lions Club Inc. have established a Lions Cub Program to encourage young families to be involved in Community Service.

The Cubs assist in many of our projects but this new project is run by the

Cubs with the assistance of Members.

They are collecting bottle caps Type 2 & 4 to assist Envision, a not-for-profit Organisation, who use them to make and then donate 3D printed prosthetic

hands and arms for children in under resourced countries. The Cubs sort the caps and get them ready for packaging.

Pictured are Lion Cubs Cameron, Calista & Emma with City of Horsham President PDG Allan Henderson sorting bottle tops for the Cubs Project.

Laptops from lions project

A Portland lions club project in conjunction with

I founded the project after I ran out of space on my laptop, (it apparently didn’t want to accept another 5000 photos from our recent holiday). After thinking about different options, expanding the memory/new computer/clearing crap off my computer (not that I had a lot of crap on it, maybe a few backups from my I Phone, and literally thousands of photos), I decided to up-grade to a new laptop with bigger memory. I was about to do what most people do with old laptops – put it in the cupboard and forget about it. I wasn’t too happy about stuffing it in a cupboard, as it was only a few years old and still in really good condition. Then a family friend in Queensland, who was originally from Heywood, was talking about how she was struggling to be able to afford a computer for her son who was about to start year nine. So I set about getting my old laptop cleared and refurbished. Once this was done, we posted it to her for her son. They got it just in time for Christmas last year. That’s when I started thinking about how many other students’ parents were struggling to be able to afford a laptop for their sons and daughters, for school. Also how many other laptop computers are sitting in drawers and under beds collecting dust? So I started to make a few enquiries to local schools on how a project of refurbished and free laptops would be able to help local students in need. The response was quite amazing on how many students there were just in our local area. So I had a conversation with Lion Michael Hunter about my ideas (Michael owns and runs Icon Investments, Portland’s largest computer store). He agreed to refurbish the laptops at no charge for the project. Next on my list was to sort out the legalities of people handing over personal items to be cleared and refurbished and then being given to students. Lion Pat Howman (who owns and runs HBH Legal) was next on my list of people to see. After speak-ing with him for about half an hour one afternoon, a meeting was set up with Lion Michael Hunter about getting a legal docu-ment drawn up for the change of ownership for the laptops to be donated, which his company did for us. Final person on my list was Andrew Bryant from Portland Signworks to get a logo drawn up for the project. Andrew is not a Lion but I knew him from when I was in business. He not only designed the logo, but also helped with the certificates, stickers and our large sign. We then decided that we needed to have an official launch to help get the project out there into the community. So we held a night at Michaels’ shop for the launch. The ‘Portland Observer’ did an article to also help get the project out into the public. Also many shops in Portland and businesses have also displayed our A4 poster in their shop windows and on staff and commu-nity notice boards. As of last week we have had about 35 laptops donated, which is a fantastic start to the project and have about six ready to go out to local school students. So now the project is up and going with the hope that other Lions Clubs may also look at the project for their local area. For further information please email Lion Wendy Godfrey at [email protected] **If other Clubs are interested in taking on the project, I will have a package set up shortly with all the paperwork ready to go for them. (So they don’t have to get legal forms drawn up etc.) Therefore all the Club has to do is determine a need in their local area, and find a computer store willing to clear and refurbish the computers. Package will include: (All will be in PDF format and sent out by email) when I get this sorted Letters to schools Request forms for Laptops/I Pads Thank you Certificates Waiver & Release document Posters for shop windows etc General Information on Project Maybe some stickers to start them off??? CONGRATULATIONS LION JOHN OLSEN OAM

Thirty people attended a “Very Special English Breakfast” on the Queen’s Birthday, Monday 10th June 2019, to celebrate the announcement of Lion Kerry “John” Olsen, as recipient of an Order of Australia Medal for his services to children suffering from Cerebral Palsy and Leukodystrophy. John’s extraordinary long term commitment to helping these children has included three solo long distance fundraising walks across Australia. Past District Governor Trevor Hirth, former Chairman of the Australian Lions Children’s Foundation (ALCMF), congratulated John on behalf of the ALCMF and Lion Brian Edward read a congratulatory letter from Sister Julie Thomas, CSB, OAM, a Leukodystrophy sufferer and the founder of the organisation now named Leukodystrophy Australia Inc. Needless to say, John was elated by the announcement and is presently wearing a permanent 24 hour grin - so well deserved! Should you wish to extend congratulations to John, he is contactable (M) 0427 849 901 and his postal address is 59 Barrabool Road, Belmont, 3216

Cakes and Mints

Hi All I am pleased to advise that I will be your District Cake Chairperson for 2019-2020 and I look forward to continuing with the great job that outgoing chairperson Terry Parsons has carried out over the past few years. Our “Lions Christmas Cakes” have been a great fundraiser for Clubs for many years but I wonder how many Members understand that they are also a “Magical” resource because, on the 26th December, they then become “Lions Fruit Cakes” and so still ready to be sold all year round. Clubs are also encourage to order Mini Fruit Cakes and have them on hand at Barbecues, street stalls etc. or to sell them on to local business-es, Nursing Homes, sporting clubs, su-permarkets etc. The possibilities are end-less. By selling our Lions Christmas Cakes, both large and small, Clubs not only raise funds directly from the profits of their sales but that the makers, Westons Foods Top Taste also pay a premium on overall sales to our District, thus providing more funds to help our communities and keep Members’ costs down. Lion Mints For all those Clubs that currently sell our Lion Mints, you may be pleased to know that there are now sugar-free mints available as well as a new product, Travel Mints. These are delicious mints in a plastic container which are ideal to put in your car or truck when travelling, for example. Suggested ideas for these, and the other Mint items, are to place them in Caravan Parks, Transport Companies, Nursing Homes, Local Supermarkets, Estate Agents, Car Sales Offices or wherever else comes to mind. Our Cake and Mint sales have been dropping off in the past few years and we must all do our best to ensure that these don’t fall by the wayside. They are not only a great fundrais-ing opportunity but also great advertising by putting the Lions name out there in front of the public. PDG Terry Uniacke Cakes & Mints Chairperson

DISTRICT V2 TRAVEL GAVEL

The “Travelling Gavel” , inside a beautifully built red gum box, continues to travel around our District. The purpose of the box is twofold. The Gavel will raise money for our own “V2 Charitable Fund”, because the Club in possession of it must pay $5 per day for the time it is with them. This, in turn, will encourage Clubs to visit one another to pass it on. There are wonderful advantages to visiting other Clubs. The sharing of Fellowship is paramount, but often as a bonus, you will see and hear other ideas that your as a Club can try. Inside the box under the gavel you will find information about the Charitable Fund as well as details about where to send your Club’s donation. Remember $5 a day until it is passed to another Club. There is also a small book in the bottom of the box that we ask you to fill out when you are transferring the box to another Club. This allows us to see which Clubs the box has been to. Just for your information, donations are to be sent to: V2 Charitable Fund Treasurer PDG Bill Duncanson PO Box 86 Camperdown VIC 3260 We ask that the box is brought to the District Changeover each year, by the Club in possession of it at that time. PDG Trevor Hirth

From the Editor At the last Cabinet Meeting in June, it was decided that, as from January 2020, there will no longer be District Governor’s Newsletter mailed out to Members. This means that Members who do not have email access will need to ask another Member, or the Secretary of their Club, to print off a copy for them. It will also mean that there will be a reduction in District Dues in the second half year Club invoice. There will be another reminder contained in the November edition so that those Members affected can make other arrangements. Valda Pritchard Newsletter Editor
