Oh boy spring is getting closer must be time to put the battery's on charge for the first start up soon to be on the
road. Our thanks to Barry for his presentation on Ford ads etc., it was real good and the next meeting we will have a
demo from Auto Glem car wax and other car care stuff. Bring all your questions about cleaning and waxing your car.
Flea markets are starting to come around again and car show dates list is getting longer . Soon it will be time for our
car inspection at Houston Ford in Stouffville, maybe Old Blue will show up with its new motor? Don't miss this.

Ontario Ministry of Transport is to hold a “trailer safety power point presentation” at the United Church meeting hall in
Cookstown, April 7th
at 7:30 pm.
The Region has a new mailing address: 11 Love Crescent, Ajax L1S 4T3.
National EFV8 news - A new President, Vice President and Secretary were appointed at the February face to face
meeting. The expense of delivering the V8 Times to members outside of the USA is being reviewed once again due to
higher mailing costs.

Presentation:
Barry more narrated a power point presentation entitled Motoring Down Memory Lane. Automotive print advertising
from the early 1900s was featured with emphasis on flathead powered Ford Motor Company products. Ford’s efforts
in the ad field was compared and contrasted with that of other contemporary motor companies.

Conrad’s latest restoration, a 1947 Monarch Coupe A few years ago to be exact, my Dad bought the first Monarch to come out to our hamlet. It was November 8
1946 and the car was a four door sedan, pear green and Dad paid all of $1,950.00 for it.
The next car to come to our hamlet was a 1947 Coupe purchased by a farmer known as Frank Card. I loved it
when I first saw it in its nice dark blue paint job. I thought I would like one like it one day.
A lot of years later I heard of one owned by a Mr. Stevenson in Brooklyn. A nice maroon colour but too rich for
my blood but in 2010 my friend Mr. Dan Davis who had bought my 1947 Monarch Sedan which I had restored,
telephoned me to see if I would go and look at a Monarch coupe with him. It was in the Millbrook area and owned by a
Mr. Barry Head for over 25 years, but never got around to restoring it. Because of moving to Newcastle along with
having some health problems, he had decided to sell it. We went to see the car but Dan on his way home said to me “I
have decided to pass on the car.” So when I got home I called Barry and we made a deal where I would buy it. It was
pretty well in need of a complete restoration.
I brought it home in the spring and started in August to restore it, wow what a job. The rad, engine and
transmission were done and painted. Then I found the second gear did not work so well. Tires are wide whites in good
condition. I replaced the gas tank with a new one that I picked up at spring Carlisle when I saw the one in p.3
it was wrong. Then I overhauled the generator, starter, new brakes, cylinders, drums and brake lines. Body work had
been started and it had to be reworked, straightened, sanded and primed, red primer. I took the car to Watts &
Sunderland Body Shop to be painted in December 2012. They gave it a coat of grey primer and finished it in
“Candy Apple Red” acrylic enamel. Dash and interior painting was done by me after the exterior was done. Then I
buffed all of the stainless, rebuilt the grill and the bumpers had been re-chromed however the bolts had been tightened
too hard and cracked around the bolts.
The interior panels and seats have been recovered in maroon vinyl with a diamond pattern and I installed it the
way I received them. The original was a cloth material however the new vinyl looks okay as is and goes well with the
candy apple red exterior and the new carpet on the floor.
The undercarriage is fair but in the spring I will give it an undercoat. This was not a frame off restoration like
many of my other two projects. It is not as much fun now as the years have crept up on me, as many of you know the
feeling eh!
I worked all winter on it and finally in early September last fall I got to drive it to our local cruise and have
worked on it since then to iron out the bugs. It is a cute little baby in its nice Candy apple paint job. Some more
finessing to be done on it but with the years rolling by I really need to down size so if you need a cutie call me and
maybe we can make a deal.
This car will be a good driver but not a 95 point show car. I have a radio that needs to be checked out, and then
installed with a new aerial.
I have just purchased a Grand Torino and it needs some work to make it Shown Room, perhaps I will see you at a
cruise night this summer. Thanks Conrad Brownson, Bancroft, On.
FORD & THE COMPETITION
A Video Presentation by Barry Moore
At the meeting on Tuesday night I showed a sample of about 100 images on screen from my collection of
automotive sales literature - sales brochures and advertisements covering the years from about 1900 to the 1980's.
Many of the early ones were originally hand drawn - some with colour added by the artist. Later it was photography
that captured the vehicles and finally it was film that was the order of the day. All three venues in my opinion require a
great deal of skill and artistry. While the images were on screen, I tried to point out how the products of the Ford
Motor Company compared at all price levels - Ford - Mercury and Lincoln. For example, from a styling point of view,
the Lincoln Zephyr was, in my opinion, heads and shoulders ahead of the Chrysler Airflow. I also tried to point out
some of the mistakes that the Ford Motor Company made over the years as well as their successes. The following is a
brief summary -
MISTAKES:
1. Kept the Model “T” in production too long
2. Mr. Ford should have gone into partnership with the Dodge Brothers and made a middle priced vehicle
about 1915. Instead, they waited until 1938 to introduce the ‘ 39 Mercury
3. The Model “A” should have been introduced about 1923 - not 1928
4. The Monarch should have been sold in the USA in 1958 instead of the Edsel.
SUCCESS:
1. The introduction of the light simple, serviceable, inexpensive Model “T” in 1909
2. The introduction of the V/8 in the low priced field in 1932.
3. The introduction of the Mustang in 1964 as a ‘65 model.
The above list is just a start - there are many more that are suitable for debate. In any event the presentation seemed to

he inadvertently happened to favour a vehicle other than Ford.
TECH TIP - Golf Tees
Keep a few wooden golf tees in your tool kit. Their tapered shape makes them ideal plugs for use in hydraulic
brake lines to prevent loss of fluid when the wheel cylinders are removed. You may find plastic tees usable, but wood
seals better than plastic. These tees also work well in sealing a rubber vacuum line. - Submitted by Barry Moore

FORD OF CANADA- 1904 to 1907
August 29, 1904: the stockholders of Ford of Canada hold its first meeting, electing Gordon McGregor as Secretary to
the board and General Manager of the Company.
February 20, 1905; first sale of a Canadian built Fords is recorded – 2 Model C’s and a Model b are shipped by
express. The new owner - Canada Cycle & Motor Company of Toronto who wanted the cars in a hurry and they paid
an invoice for $3,545.
November 8, 1905; a single Ford is shipped to New Zealand. It is the second of many Universal Cars to be built in
Canada and shipped abroad.
December 31, 1905; Sales for the calendar year 1905 were $110,114. The workers turned out 114 Model C and 7 of
the Model B.
August 6, 1906; the first Canadian made Fords are loaded onto a ship for export to the Commonwealth of Australia.
They are all Model K.
December 31, 1906; Ford has built 101 automobiles for this year of which 76 were exported and 25 were sold here at
home.
July 1907; a branch is opened in Toronto and assembly will be added in 1916 during the war to solve both a box car

Building National Unity. One Car Guy at aTime!

The picture says it all, a group of “old car guys” after a meal when they are “full up again” and are smiling and ready
to go. I have attached Laurus’ note he sent me and it is exactly as how I would describe my first visit with Les, Cliff and
Bruce – a great time and all good old car guys. Take care Lloyd
The photo shows the members of the club that I met with. I am not sure of the name of some of the members, but I will
try to explain what we saw at each shop. The third from left (Bob) had 2 very interesting 1940 vehicles: one was a
Woodie Wagon, and the other was a 1940 convertible which was dropped and rodded very tastefully. These cars were
set up in a man cave garage featuring all types of memorabilia and vintage items. This fellow also took us into his
workshop that was attached to the rear of his house. In it were a vintage wooden boat and a Ranchero that he was
working on installing a big block in. The big block had three carbs on it that were so huge they were basically touching
each other and looked like one huge carburetor. The shop of this guy was also filled with all types of memorabilia,
vintage photos, signs and antique outboard motors hanging on the wall etc.
The fourth person from the left (Les) had a very extensive collection. You could eat off the floor of his shop, as well
as the workbench! He had a Thunderbird, a 40 Ford Coupe, a 32 Ford (both the 40 and the 32 were Dearborn award
winning cars.) This fellow also had a wall with racking that showcased over 60 vintage pedal cars, some restored and
some in original condition. Apparently his house is also filled with pedal cars.
The third guy from the right is Ray Mitchell. He was a hoot! He was continually joking with the other guys. He's 75
years old and you would never know it. I know who he is because he gave me his business cards (one for each vehicle
in his shop! I believe the first one is a 51 Ford convertible that he redid as a replica of his first car. The second one is a
36 Ford and a beautiful driver, and the third one is an early 50's Mercury Monterey) Again you could eat off the floor
and the shop was filled with vintage ford parts and memorabilia. The memorable part of this fellows shop was the
second floor hideout or getaway that he built in the attic of his shop. He said he goes up there every night and has 2
martinis!
The second guy from the right is Ross. I’m going solely by a business card he gave me that features a 34 Ford. This
fellow had a beautiful 34 ford in his garage that is ready to get back on the road. The day started at his house with
coffee, and chatting with a lot of ribbing and flathead talk happening. The other guys were helping Cliff put the
finishing touches on this car. I really got the feeling that true friendships were apparent among this group. From Laurus
Sinke. The day was organized by Bruce Brown, after a phone call from Laurus who was visiting from Southern Ontario. Laurus was
