THE HEAD COACH: A new era o Washington ootball begins this all when thenewly-renovated Husky Stadium opens its doors on Aug. 31. The 93-year old legendhas undergone a thorough rebuild that will make it one o the grandest, most beauti-ul sports venues in the nation. With the new stadium come heightened interest andenergy around the Husky program as the Dawgs look to springboard into yet anotherera o on-eld successes. Poised to take them there is th-year head coach SteveSarkisian, who has assembled the pieces on oense and deense, in recruiting andnow in acilities and inrastructure to put the Huskies back on top. Since arriving atthe UW ater the 2008 season, Sarkisian has taken the Dawgs rom their lowest olows to three bowl games in his our seasons. Now his task is to continue that upwardmovement. In 2012, the Huskies posted a 7-6 overall record, going 5-4 in Pac-12 play, despite acing one o the nations most rigorous schedules, which included a seven-game stretch that included matchups with ve teams ranked in the top 11 in the APpoll. Washington posted a pair o memorable victories over top-10 oes, beating 8th-ranked Stanord, the eventual Pac-12 champs, 17-13, on a Thursday night in Seattle. In the eighth week o the season, the Dawgs handed seventh-ranked Oregon State itsrst loss o the season, 20-17, in another down-to-the-wire win. For the season, theHuskies made considerable strives on deense, cutting nearly 100 yards and more than11 points per game o o its per-game average rom the previous year. On oense, the UW had its ourth straight season with a 1,000-yard rusher as sophomore BishopSankey ran or 1,439 yards. The 2011 season, Sarkisians third as head coach, providedmore highlights or his up-and-coming program. The Husky oense posted one o itsmost prolic seasons ever, scoring 434 points over the course o the season, the most

by a UW squad since the 1991 national championship team and the second-most inschool history. The Huskies scored nearly 12 more points per game than they did theprevious year. They also had marked improvement in passing yards (65 more yardsper game) and total oense (47 more yards per game), while the teams third-downpercentage improved vastly over the previous season, rom 32 to 46 percent. In 2010,Sarkisians second season in Seattle, the Huskies made another clear step orward. The Dawgs went 7-6 overall and nished third in the Pac-10 Conerence with a 5-4record. Then, in the Holiday Bowl, Washington provided one o the bowl seasons topgames, beating an 18th-ranked Nebraska squad, 19-7. The win over the Cornhuskerswas the last o a series o exciting, gutsy victories in 2010. The season included threeHusky wins decided on the very last play o the game (Oregon State, USC and Cal), plusanother in which the winning score came inside the nal minute (WSU). Sarkisian wasintroduced as the new head coach o the Washington ootball team on Dec. 8, 2008.From the start, Sarkisian made it clear that he didnt think it would take long to turn the

program around and get it back to the high level o success that UW ootball has en-joyed throughout its history. In his rst season, 2009, he seemed to prove that he wasright. Washington, which posted a winless season or the rst time in school historythe year beore Sarkisian signed on, surged to a 5-7 record in 2009, an improvemento ve victories over the previous year. No BCS-conerence school in the nation couldboast such improvement in terms o wins in 2009. And, Sarkisians Husky squad pulledo that eat against a schedule that included 10 opponents who ended the seasonbowl-eligible. Sarkisian came to the UW with a wealth o experience as a quarterbackscoach and oensive coordinator. His string o success is nearly unprecedented as, dur-ing his time at USC, he coached two Heisman Trophy winners and oversaw one o thenations most consistent and dominant oenses. Sarkisian spent 2007 and 2008 as theTrojans assistant head coach and oensive coordinator. He had also previously servedas assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach (2005-06), quarterbacks coach (2002-03) and as an oensive assistant (2001) at USC, or a total o seven seasons there. Dur-ing his seven seasons as a member o the Trojans sta, the team posted a combined74-15 record. As oensive coordinator, his record was 22-3. Aside rom his variousroles at USC, Sarkisian also spent one season as quarterbacks coach or the OaklandRaiders in 2004 and as QBs coach at El Camino College in Torrance, Cali., in 2000, hisrst coaching job. Sarkisian starred at the quarterback position at the prep, collegiateand pro levels. Ater his standout career at Brigham Young University, he was playedor the Saskatchewan Roughriders o the Canadian Football League or three seasons(1997-99). He had a record-setting two-year (1995-96) career at BYU, playing underlegendary coach Lavell Edwards. Sarkisian completed 549-o-824 passes (66.6 percent)or 7,755 yards and 55 touchdowns in his career. His 162.0 career passing eciencyrating ranked third on the all-time NCAA list. As a senior in 1996, he led the nation inpassing eciency (173.6, No. 7 all-time) as the Western Athletic Conerence champion

Cougars went 14-1 and won the 1997 Cotton Bowl. He was the WAC Oensive Playeo the Year in 1996, and earned second-team All-America honors. Sarkisian transerred

to BYU rom El Camino Junior College, where he played two seasons (1993-94). Hewas a rst-team Junior College All-America selection as a sophomore and earned allconerence honors in 1993. He also played baseball at El Camino in 1993. He originallenrolled at USC as a baseball player, spending the all o 1992 on the Trojans rosterSarkisian was a standout ootball and baseball player at West Torrance (Cali.) HighHe earned his bachelors degree in sociology rom BYU in 1997 ater receiving his associates degree rom El Camino in 1994. Sarkisian was born March 8, 1974. WASHINGTON vs. STANFORD STANOFRD STADIUM OCT. 5 , 2013 7 :30 P.M. PT (ESPN)

COACHING STAFF: Washingtons assistant coaching sta welcomedjust two new members in 2013 as ormer graduate assistant JordanPaopao was elevated to tight ends coach and legendary Husky quarter-back Marques Tuiasosopo returned to Montlake to coach quarterbacks.Oensive coordinator Eric Kiesau also made a move, switching rom quar-terbacks to receivers coach (while maintaining his coordinating duties).Nearly all o the UWs nine ull-time assistant coaches have some sort otie to the Northwest and many played or then-Pac-10 ootball programs.

The oensive side o the ball is led by second-year assistant Kiesau, whocame to the UW rom Caliornia. A ormer QB at Portland State, Kiesauhad spent the previous decade at either Cal or Colorado. Idaho grad DanCozzetto is in his th season as the UWs run game coordinator and o-ensive line coach. Cozzetto grew up in Spokane, Wash., and was also theWashington line coach in 2003. He came to the UW rom Arizona State.Paopao, who played at San Diego, had spent the previous two years asa GA at Washington, is the son o ormer BC Lions assistant coach TonyPaopao. Assistant head coach, running backs coach and special teamscoordinator Johnny Nansen is a th-year coach at the UW. He grew up inLong Beach, Cali., but played ootball at Washington State and spent theprevious ve years at Idaho beore moving over to the UW. The deensivesta saw no changes ater the 2012 season. Coordinator Justin Wilcox

grew up in Junction City, Ore., and spent our years as a deensive back atOregon. He came to the UW rom Tennessee and, prior to that, coached atBoise State, among others. His ormer college roommate, Peter Sirmon, oversees the UW linebackers. A our-year starter at Oregon and a nativeo Walla Walla, Wash., Sirmon played in the NFL or seven years beoremoving on to coaching. Ater stints at Central Washington and Oregon,he worked with Wilcox at Tennessee beore coming to Seattle. The de-ensive backs coach is Keith Heyward, a our-year letterman at OregonState. An L.A.-area native, Heyward has coached at OSU six o the lastseven seasons. Deensive line coach and deensive run game coordinatorTosh Lupoi had spent his entire playing and coaching career at Calior-nia beore moving to the UW this in 2012. A ormer Cal deensive line-man, hed coached the line at his alma mater the last our years ater twoseasons as a GA. Washington has our new graduate assistants: ormerHusky wide receiver DAndre Goodwin, Kenyon Blue, Connor Knowles andDanny Razore.

VIEW FROM THE OTHER SIDELINE: While the Huskies ull-time coach-ing sta includes just one UW graduate (Marques Tuiasosopo), nearly allo them have some tie to the state or to the Northwest and a surprisingnumber have actually played or their alma mater against the Dawgs. Headman Steve Sarkisians only loss in a 14-1 season as a senior at BYU in 1996came to the UW at Husky Stadium. Deensive coaches Justin Wilcox andPeter Sirmon both aced the Huskies during their playing careers at Oregonrom 1996 to 1999. Former Washington State linebacker Johnny Nansen, now the Huskies running backs coach and special teams coordinator, wason the opposite sideline or several Apple Cups in the early-to-mid 1990s

and new deensive backs coach Keith Heyward played in a ew barnburnersvs. the UW or Oregon State rom 1997 to 2000. More recently, deensiveline coach Tosh Lupoi squared o with the Huskies during his time as ad-lineman at Caliornia at the start o the last decade. And while oensiveline coach Dan Cozzetto ever aced Washington during his career at Idaho,he grew up in the Evergreen State (Spokane), while tight ends coach JordanPaopao spent some o his childhood living in Vancouver, B.C., when his dadcoached with the BC Lions o the CFL. Finally, new oensive coordinatorEric Kiesau has also never played against Washington, but did play hiscollege ootball just across the border at Portland State.

HUSKIES vs. DUCKS HISTORY: Washington leads the all-time seriesagainst the Ducks with 58 wins, 42 losses and ve ties. While the serieso games played in Eugene has the Ducks enjoying a 16-12 edge all-time(Oregon's home games vs. the UW were played in Portland or many years)the Huskies are 31-20-4 against their cross-border rivals in games played inSeattle. Washington has been a requent visitor to Eugene in recent yearsThe 2009 game in Seattle was just the third in the decade while they'vemet at Autzen in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2010. The Ducks have

had the edge o late, winning 14 o the last 18 against the Dawgs. TheHuskies, however, have won 15 o the last 31 and 21 o the last 38. Lasseason in Eugene, second-ranked Oregon beat No. 23 Washington, 52-21In 2011, in the nal game at the old Husky Stadium, the Ducks beat the UW34-17. In 2010 in Eugene, UW QB Keith Price made his rst college startin a 53-16 Husky loss. Oregon led 18-16 in the third quarter beore pullingaway. Three years at Husky Stadium, Oregon won, 43-19. Four seasons agoin Eugene in the season-opener or both teams, Jeremiah Masoli came othe bench and led the Ducks to a 44-10 win. In 2007 in Seattle, the Huskiesand Ducks were tied at 31-31 ater three quarters beore Oregon pulledaway in the nal period or a 55-34 win. The Huskies' last win over Oregonwas in 2003, when Shelton Sampson and Kenny James both rushed oover 100 yards in a 42-10 Husky victory. Washington and Oregon rst me

on the ootball eld in 1900, a 43-0 Oregon win in Eugene. The Huskiesgot their rst win in the series in the next meeting, a 6-5 victory in 1903From 1974 to 1993, Washington won 17 o 20 meetings. The series alsoeatures one o the biggest year-to-year turnarounds in college ootbalhistory as the Ducks beat the Huskies, 58-0, in 1973 and then lost at theUW, 66-0, the ollowing year.

WASHINGTON-OREGON TIES: Washingtons coaching sta includestwo coaches who were our-year lettermen at Oregon. Both UW deensivecoordinator Justin Wilcox and linebackers coach Peter Sirmon lettered rom1996 to 1999. Both joined the UW sta prior to last season. Several currenlongtime members o the UO coaching sta were working at Oregon at thetime that Wilcox and Sirmon played there. Sirmon was also a grad assistantwith the Ducks in 2009. Additionally, UW oensive coordinator Eric Kiesauworked on the same Colorado sta as Ducks head coach Mark Helrich inthe late 2000s. Washingtons current roster includes just two players romthe state o Oregon: junior OL James Atoe (The Dalles-Wahtonka) and reshman OL Andrew Kirkland (Portland/Jesuit). The Ducks roster lists only twoWashingtonians: Andy Mattingly (Spokane/Mead) and Aaron Lee (FederaWay/Decatur). A ew Huskies and Ducks went to the same high schoolHusky Gregory Ducre and Duck DeAnthony Thomas (Crenshaw); HuskyKendyl Taylor and Ducks Tyler Johnstone and Reggie Daniels (Hamilton)Kirkland and Ducks Keanon Lowe, Doug Brenner & Matt Pierson (Jesuit)Husky Kevin King and Duck T.J. Daniel (Bishop ODowd); and Husky ErikKohler and Duck Connor Johnson (Oaks Christian).

DAWGS AND THE NORTHWEST: Washingtons most-played rivalries

are against the other three other northwest Pac-12 schools. The Huskieshave aced Washington State 105 times, Oregon in 105 games and OregonState on 97 occasions. Washington owns the advantage in all three series. The Huskies lead the Ducks 58-42-5, Washington State 67-32-6 andOregon State 59-34-4. Combined, Washington has a 184-108-15 (.624record against its northwest rivals. Washington has played all three o theNorthwest teams in a season on 84 prior occasions. Over those 84 seasonsin which Oregon, OSU and WSU were all on the UW schedule, the Dawgshave swept all three 28 times. In the meantime, the Huskies have lost toall three in the same season on only seven occasions.

T E A M N O T E SSANKEY ON TOP: Washington junior Bishop Sankey put his name onthe map last season when he ran or 1,439 yards, the third-highest total inWashington history. This season, his prole continues to rise as he entersthis week as the nations No. 4 leading rusher at 146.4 yards per game(despite carrying the ball just our times or 77 yards vs. Idaho State). Overhis last 10 games, dating back to last season o course, hes rushed or1,501, an average o more than 150 per game over that stretch.

DEFENSE ON THE RISE: Washington's deense made tremendousimprovements in 2012 as compared to the 2011 totals, and those strideshave continued their ascent in 2013. Last year, the Huskies were betteron deense across the board, but most notably improved against the pass, where they went rom the 116th (out o 120 teams) ranked unit in the nationto the 23rd . Here's a look at where the UW's per-game average and NCAArank in all o the major team deense categories in 2011, 2012 and throughthe rst six weeks o 2013:

1,000-YARD STREAK: Husky sophomore tailback Bishop Sankey breachedthe 1,000-yard mark or the 2012 season in the win over Utah. He nishedthe season with 1,439 yards, third-most in UW history. Sankey was just the11th dierent player in UW history to rush or 1,000 yards and his seasonwas the 16th 1,000-yard season in school history. In our years under headcoach Steve Sarkisian, the UW has produced a 1,000-yard back each year.Chris Polk reached the benchmark each o the last three seasons and Sankeytook over the streak in 2012.

THREE BOWLS IN FOUR YEARS AFTER WINLESS SEASON: Byreaching a bowl game last year or the third season while just our yearsremoved rom a winless season, Washington pulled o a rare eat. TheHuskies were just the third team in the last 50 years o major college oot-ball to have gone rom winless to three bowl games within our seasons. The only other programs to accomplish that eat are Indiana (winless in1984; bowl games in 1986, 1987 and 1988) and Florida (winless in 1979;bowl games in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983). In 2011, the UW became oneo just eight teams ever to go to two bowls within three seasons ater ano-win season.
