SHORT COURSES

Pleasure as Life’s Goal Philosophers Epicurus, Bentham and Mill argue that pleasure is the most natural goal for human life. Aristotle and Kierkegaard offer critiques of this claim, arguing that pleasure is too limited. Decide for yourself if pleasure-as-goal does justice to the full nature of the human being.

PRESENTERS

Julia Pandl “Julia Pandl Serves Up Stories from the Sunday Brunch” For Julia Pandl, the rite of passage included mandatory service at her family’s Milwaukee-based restaurant, where she watched as her father – who was also the chef – ruled with the strictness of a drill sergeant. Her witty, honest and exuberant “Memoir of the Sunday Brunch” marks the debut of a writer who knows that humor exists in even the smallest details of our lives and that the biggest moments we ever experience can happen behind the pancake station at the Sunday brunch. Pandl was born in Milwaukee, where she still lives and works. When she is not writing, she works for the Boelter SuperStore and moonlights as a stand-up comedian.

Dean Jensen “The Making of ‘Queen of the Air’” Set in the early decades of the twentieth century, “Queen of the Air” tells the story of aerialist Lillian Leitzel and trapeze artist Alfredo Codona, lovers and the most famous stars ever to perform beneath the big top. As in Greek tragedies, partly because of the intervention of gods, but also because of the protagonists’ human frailties, Leitzel and Codona would both come to violent ends, and the circus, maybe nearly an eternal institution, would never again be the same. For the last 25 years, Dean Jensen has been operator of a contemporary art gallery in Milwaukee, the eponymously named Dean Jensen Gallery, and before that, an art critic and feature writer for the “Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.” He is the author of four books, the latest of them “Queen of the Air: A True Story of Love and Tragedy at the Circus.”

Priscilla Kucik “Robert Burns: Poet Laureate of Love and National Poet of Scotland (and the World)” Scottish poet and songwriter Robert Burns (1759-1796) lived most of his life as an obscure peasant, never left his native country, published only one book in his lifetime, and died at the age of 37. Yet within a few years of his death, annual Burns Suppers were being held and he became the international poster boy for freedom (religious, sexual and personal) and the “Poet Laureate of Love.” His poetry has been published in several languages and many countries claim him as their own. Today, how many Milton Clubs are there? How many annual Shakespeare dinners are being held? Yet Burnsians are accused of bordering on a cult. How did this happen? Priscilla (“Pete”) Kucik is a charter member and president of the Robert Burns Club of Milwaukee, a member of the St. Andrew’s Society of Milwaukee and past Wisconsin commissioner for Clan MacLeod, she gives talks for the Celtic Women First Friday lecture series, and her favorite color is plaid.

J. Patrick Ronan “Estate Planning and Probate: Five Tools” Learn the aspects of administering the estate of a deceased person, including wills, trusts, financial durable power of attorney, health care power of attorney, federal and state gift taxes, federal estate taxes, living will, marital property law and elder law. J. Patrick Ronan is a graduate of Marquette University and has his law degree from the University of Wisconsin. He has served as an estate and gift tax attorney for the Internal Revenue Service and trust administrator for M&I Trust Company. Ronan has published articles in “Taxation for Lawyers,” “Indiana Bar Journal,” the “Milwaukee Lawyer” and “Wisconsin Bar Bulletin.” He has lectured at Cardinal Stritch, Marquette University Law School, Milwaukee Bar Association and State Bar of Wisconsin. Ronan concentrates his practice in areas of taxation, estate planning, wills, probate, trusts and elder care.

Mike Drew “An Afternoon with the Lunts” On a snowy February day in 1967, “Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (MJS)” critic-columnist, Mike Drew slid into a Genesee Depot ditch on his way to the most fascinating interview in half a century of them. Theatrical legends and longtime Wisconsin residents Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne invited Drew to their Waukesha County estate-escape for an extremely rare tour and dual interview just as their remarkable 55-year career on stage together ended. Drew recalls highlights from that day and shows video clips from some of their finest performances. Mike Drew has won prestigious writing awards and was recently inducted into the Milwaukee Press Club Media Hall of Fame. He has written a nationally syndicated column, taught and lectured widely and led two national associations of newspaper critics and columnists. He concluded a media column for the “MJS” in 2006, which ran in various forms, for 43 years. As a longtime music critic, Drew now contributes “MJS” and “Milwaukee Magazine” reviews and interviews in the jazz and classic pop areas.

Bob Dylan’s “Chronicles: Volume One”: The Autobiography of the Artist as a Young/Old Man Join Dylan enthusiast Gary Baughn in an exploration of “Chronicles: Volume One,” the elliptical, non-chronological autobiography of Bob Dylan, “The poet laureate of rock and roll. The voice of the promise of the ‘60s counterculture. The guy who forced folk into bed with rock. Who donned makeup in the ‘70s and disappeared into a haze of substance abuse. Who emerged to find Jesus. Who was written off as a has-been by the end of his career in the late ‘80s, and who suddenly shifted gears releasing some of the strongest music of his career beginning in the late ‘90s.” Please be at least halfway through this interesting account by the beginning of the first class.

“The Two Gentlemen of Verona” at the American Players Theatre Join us as we spend another wonderful summer day at the American Players Theatre. Enjoy a tasty picnic lunch and then take in an outdoor matinee performance of Shakespeare’s “The Two Gentlemen of Verona,” a comic tale of two gentlemen who seek travel, adventure and yes, love, with a complication or two thrown in along the way. “Two Gents” is a play written when Shakespeare himself was just a Bardling – call it his coming-of-age story. Pairs upon pairs, the boys, the girls, the servants and one emotive dog keep the comedy lively.
