World Food Day is a worldwide event designed to increase awareness, understanding and provoke year-around action to alleviate hunger. It is

observed each October 16th in recognition o the ounding o the United

Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 1945. The Food and

Agriculture Organization is the lead agency o the United Nation system

or technical assistance, research and policy-making in world agriculture,

shing, orestry and rural development. The rst World Food Day was in

1981. In the United States the endeavor is sponsored by 450 national,

private voluntary organizations. World Food day is celebrated in 150

nations.

The theme o this year’s observance, United Against Hunger is chosen

to recognize the eorts made in the ght against world hunger at national,

regional and international levels.

United Against Hunger  becomes real when state and the rest o

the society—non government organizations, the private sector and

individuals—partner at all levels to deeat hunger, extreme poverty and

malnutrition.

In 2009, the critical threshold o one billion hungry people in the world

was reached in part due to soaring ood prices and the nancial crisis.According to FAO Director-General Jacques Diou, this is a “tragic

org.

There have never been so many hungry people in the world as on this

World Food Day 2010. Let us refect on the past and project to eradicatehunger in the uture. With willpower, courage and persistence—and

many players working together and helping each other—more ood can

be sustainably produced, saely stored and distrubuted into the mouths

o those who need it most.

Here in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the University o the Virgin Islands

Cooperative Extension Service has taken the lead in providing educational

and nutritional workshops on ood production to stimulate production

and availability o ood. The agency regularly partners with community

groups, schools, government agencies, businesses and media to hold

this special event, to increase awareness and understanding aboutthose who are hungry and undernourished. Our World Food Day Drive

actually eeds the hungry in the Virgin Islands.
