C ONFERENCE H IGHLIGHTS UUMN Notes Unitarian Universalist Musicians Network Professional Development Day An optional pre-conference session on Wednesday features Rev. Leon Dunkley. The topic will be “Music as Story: Gazing into Mystery, History, and Beyond.” Leon has a PhD in ethnomusicology from the University of Pittsburgh and is currently Associate Minister at the UU Church of Silver Spring, MD. This session is required for Music Leadership Credentialing candidates and highly recommended to all with a separate $75 registration fee. Wednesday Evening Program & Dessert Reception The conference begins with an opening celebration at 7 PM at the hotel followed by a dessert reception with cash bar. The short program will be a lively prelude to the conference including group singing, merrymaking and welcoming newcomers and guests. You will want to eat dinner beforehand. There is a dining area in our hotel and several restaurants nearby. Workshops & Lunchtime Sessions Six workshop slots offer opportunities to enlighten, inspire and enhance your music ministry. Along with a contemporary music track, offerings include beginning conducting, worship technology, healing power of music, handbells. Informal lunchtime sessions provide networking opportunities for a variety of interest groups: small, medium, large church, troubadours, music committees and more. See our website for a complete list. Think Like a Filmmaker: Lessons for Worship Design from Film with. Dr. Marcia McPhee Much has been written comparing worship to theater, however Dr. McFee believes it is the art of filmmaking where we “worship artists” can learn valuable lessons. As the church begins to claim the power of the arts and to practice this in ever more complex ways, worship designers need more tools for their artistry. Dr. McFee will guide us through her process of worship design in this Friday plenary session. Bookstore Space Limited bookstore space is available for $25 for half a six foot table. Conference Clinician – Ruben Valenzuela Ruben Valenzuela, founder and Music Director of the Bach Collegium, San Diego since 2003, will rehearse the conference choir daily and lead us on Sunday morning. Ruben is experienced in the music of the Renaissance, early and high Baroque, through music of the early Classical era. He will also lead two Conducting Master Classes for which there are several participating conductor spots available. If interested contact David Blazer [email protected] . Daily Worship Three vibrant, inspirational worship services are planned. Thursday morning the Program Directors will lead us in “Singing Our Covenant”, a joyous musical celebration of the seven UU principles. On Friday, inspired by a trip to South Africa, Amanda Thomas and Marty Swisher will present a worship based on Nelson Mandela’s message of hope. Participants in their Thursday workshop will prepare and present music in the South African style at this service. Our annual Service of Remembrance, led by Joyce Poley on Saturday will give us an opportunity to reflect with gratitude on the lives of UUMN members who have died and also on personal losses we may have experienced in the past year. Contemporary Worship Band There has been a good response to the invitation for participants in the conference band. (See 4/1 email or website.) There is still a need for bass and drum.
