A Message from the Administrative Team
The beginning of September has been very busy and we have had a smooth start to the school year.
The Buttonville staff have worked very hard to ensure a smooth transition and our students have
settled in well. Throughout the year we will continue to build strong relationships between home and
school in order to support our children in reaching their full potential.
One way that we can work together to ensure our students’ success is by supporting the develop-
ment of learning skills and work habits. It is important to encourage your child to take responsibility
for their learning while providing support. The development of learning skills and work habits begins
early and are often an indicator for future success.
This month our students will learn about responsibility and stewardship. Our students will learn that
they have an important role to play as empowered citizens who will shape the future.
Please stay tuned for information regarding our upcoming Curriculum Night as well as an invitation to
be a part of our school council.
We look forward to hearing from you, please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or con-cerns.

A Message from School Council
On behalf of the Buttonville School Council we would like to welcome new and returning families to the
2019/20 school year. Our council is made up of parent volunteers; our aim is to encourage and promote
positive interactions within the school, the parent body, and the community at large. The success of our
School Council is only as strong as the volunteers associated with it, and we would love for you to share
your time by volunteering at a school activity. Whether it’s helping to deliver lunches to the students at
lunch time weekly or monthly, or coming out at night and volunteering at many of our school functions,
any help is greatly appreciated!. With our last year activities, we managed to raise enough money to
purchase or fund the following items: various forms of technology for the school, phys ed equipment
and flexible seating. We also funded visits from The Lice Crew and finally gave a contribution towards
the Grade 8 Graduation.
We have many school events already scheduled for this school year such as: lunch days from Mr. Sub,
pasta from Mother’s Deli, and Mine Sushi as well as new lunches from Astoria Greek and Swiss Chalet!
Please purchase the lunches you are interested in ASAP via School CashOnline so we can start next
month. The lice crew will be visiting Sept. 17 and revisiting Sept. 20 as well. As you will see, School
Council promotes a lot of fundraising throughout the year via Dance-a-thon, Investment in Education,
End of the year BBQ, popcorn cookie sales and the list goes on. We look for support from the Button-
ville Community so we can continue to purchase materials for the school and the students. We look for-
ward to seeing you at future gatherings and hope you can help out.

Please join us for our first School Council Meeting which will take place on Wednesday September 18, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. in the
school library where we will be electing our new School Council Executive Members.
Sincerely
Neely Noticewala and Imma Petrou

Message from Our Trustee
A Message from School Council Cont…..
I am so pleased to welcome all of our new and returning families to another school year. As your school board trustee, it is my role to advocate for quality public education in York Region, and to ensure that our students remain at the centre of all of our decision making. The Board of Trustees makes policy and budget decisions, and communicates with the public, among other re-sponsibilities.
We are also responsible for setting direction for the school board, through our Multi-Year Strategic Plan. This plan sets out four priorities: Foster Well-Being and Mental Health, Build Collaborative Relationships, Champion Equity and Inclusivity, and Empower Ethical Leadership.
As we start the new school year, I want to highlight the importance of relationships. We want to build and maintain relationships with our families that are built on trust, respect and responsive communication. To support that, I will continue to keep you in-formed of our work and priorities, and I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. You can also find the message from the Chair of the Board on the Board’s website.
In addition, I invite you to share your feedback on our Board policies. Policies govern everything from field trips, school volun-teers, equity and inclusive education, student discipline and much more, and we greatly value input from families on these im-portant matters. We regularly post on our website the policies that are under review and available for comment as well as infor-mation about how to share your feedback. I hope you will take a look.
I know school staff are excited to welcome back students, and I look forward to meeting more of our families throughout the up-coming school year. I encourage you to build a relationship with the staff members and community at your school. There are so many different ways to get involved and support your child’s education. I hope you have a great start to the school year and wish you a happy, safe and successful year ahead.

TERRY FOX RUN AT BUTTONVILLE
WALKING or CYCLING to SCHOOL
Walking or Cycling to School
As we start the 2019—2020 school year, we would like to remind and encourage families to consider walking or cycling with children to and from school. There are many benefits to walking and cycling to school. It:
Improves student academic performance by making children more alert and better prepared to learn.
Contributes to the daily goal of 60 minutes of moderate or vigorous activity for children, improving their health and over-
all fitness.
Reduces traffic congestion and improves safety for everyone in school zones.
Promotes life-long habits that foster independence and active lifestyles, preparing children for their future.
For those who can’t walk or cycle to school every day, choosing active travel once, twice or a few days a week can still provide benefits. You can also consider parking a block away from the school and walking the rest of the way. Include active travel as part of your daily rou-tine!
Terry Fox Run T-Shirts!
Coming up on September 27th, Buttonville will be participating in our 19th annual Terry Fox School Run. When you buy a Terry Fox Run T-shirt, you are helping to keep Ter-ry’s Canadian legacy alive as well as supporting cancer research. It’s also a great way to help reach our school’s fundraising goal and show support for our Canadian hero on Run Day.

HALLOWEEN—LET’S MAKE IT SAFE
Here are some helpful tips from York Regional Police and Health Canada to keep in mind as your
children head out to trick or treat:
Parents should know the route that older children are going to take
Tell your children to stay in a group, walk slowly and communicate where they are going
Wear reflective clothing or reflective stripes on dark costumes
Don’t wear masks that can restrict vision. Face make up is a better choice
Carry a cell phone in the event of an emergency
Children should remain on well-lit streets and always use sidewalks
Remind kids to never enter a stranger’s home or car for a treat
Throw out any treats that are not wrapped, those in torn or loose packages, or any that have
small holes in the wrappers
Discard homemade candy or baked goods
Remember, when it doubt, throw it out
HALLOWEEN COSTUMES
Each year, many of our students celebrate the long-standing tradition of Halloween. Students cele-
brating this occasion in costume at our school must comply with the Safe School’s policy. Costume
accessories including, but not limited to, toy guns, knives, axes, swords, etc. are not in com-
pliance with York Region District School Board’s Safe Schools Policy #668.0. Please DO NOT
send these accessories to school with your child. Please note that this policy applies to all
students at all levels, including Kindergarten. Thank you for your understanding. We look forward to
having a safe and enjoyable Halloween.

Please make sure your child has a pair of indoor shoes for school. With wet and slushy weather, outdoor shoes track in mud into the hallways and classrooms. If the students are able to change into indoor shoes when they are in the building it will
contribute to a cleaner school environment for us all.
