Boundaries
● The state is bordered by Rajasthan to the west, Haryana, Himachal
Pradesh and Delhi to the northwest, Uttarakhand and Nepal to the north,
Bihar to the east, Madhya Pradesh to the south, and touches the states of
Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh to the southeast.

History of Uttar Pradesh
● It was created on 1 April 1937 as the United Provinces of
Agra and Oudh during British rule, and was renamed Uttar
Pradesh in 1950.
● On 9 November 2000, a new state, Uttarakhand, was carved
out from the state's Himalayan hill region.
● President's rule has been imposed in Uttar Pradesh ten
times since 1968, for different reasons and for a total of
1,700 days.

● Sarojini Naidu was the first governor of Uttar Pradesh.
Geography
● Uttar Pradesh is India's fourth-largest state in terms of land area and is
roughly of same size as United Kingdom.
● The larger Gangetic Plain region is in the north; it includes the Ganges-
Yamuna Doab, the Ghaghra plains, the Ganges plains and the Terai. The
smaller Vindhya Range and plateau region is in the south.
● The state has more than 32 large and small rivers; of them, the Ganges,
Yamuna, Saraswati, Sarayu, Betwa, and Ghaghara are larger and of religious
importance in Hinduism.
● The election to the 17th Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly was held from
11 February to 8 March 2017 in 7 phases.
● Bharatiya Janata Party won this election by an overwhelming three-quarter
majority of 325 seats.
● On 18 March 2017, Yogi Adityanath was appointed the new CM of Uttar
Pradesh.
● UP BJP Chief Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma were appointed
as the Deputy CM.

General Facts
● It is the most populous state in India as well as the most populous country subdivision
in the world.
● The two major rivers of the state, the Ganga and Yamuna, join at Allahabad
(Prayagraj) and then flow as the Ganga further east.

6 Monuments declared of national importance in 2018 by ASI
The Ministry of Culture announced that Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)
declared 6 monuments as ‘protected and of national importance’ under the
Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958, in 2018.
