The UTS members of the Australian Team in Crete

SAILINGWorld University Championships

An Australian team consisting of two crews of five athletes recently competed in the World University Match Racing Championships in Crete, Greece. The championships included 13 crews from Greece (2), Great Britain (2), Poland (2), Ireland, Singapore, Italy, France and Denmark. The two Australian crews comprised of 7 UTS students with Jay Griffin, Hugh Tait, Kathryn Webb, Jackson Cranfield and Tara McCall (UNSW) winning the Silver Medal and Lucinda Whitty, Kathleen Stroinovsky, Kate Reddy, Jess Pollard (USYD) and Ted Hackney (USYD) winning the Bronze Medal. The top ranked British team sailed an almost flawless regatta to come away with the Gold Medal.

The round robin format saw each crew race each other with the top 6 going straight through to the Quarter Finals and 7 to 10 racing in the repechage for the final 2 positions in the quarter finals. The Australian team of Whitty secured their spot finishing the round robin in 3rd while team Griffin had to race off in the repechage after sitting in 9th place. Team Griffin won all 3 races in the repechage to make it through to the finals, along with Team Whitty.

The event was a great success for Australia and in particular for UTS. The athletes from all countries became friends over the course of the regatta and celebrated the success of a great event!

The UTS Sailing Club will be sending a team to the upcoming Australian University Games in Perth, where sailing has once again been included. The sailing competition has been split into two disciplines, Match Racing and Teams Racing and will be held over a 6 day period.

The club has recently confirmed the kind donation of 3 Tasar sailing dinghies from Northbridge Sailing Club which provides a good basis of boats to build from for racing and lessons.

The club is also actively involved with University of Sydney and University

of New South Wales clubs in holding Learn to Sail lessons at Woollahra Sailing Club in Rose Bay. This is open to students, staff, and alumni; with the opportunity for friends and family to join as well.

The attendance at their Men’s training and Academy sessions has been outstanding and the coaching staff of both groups has been really happy with the intensity and commitment thus far. The Selection Committee will be working overtime before Round 1 to identify the talent and organise the teams leading into the season opener in September.

SKI CLUBAUC Snow Spor ts

UTS will be sending a team of 20 down to Mount Buller on August 29th to compete in the Australian University Snow Sports Championships. UTS has a strong team this year, with representatives competing in every event on offer. Stay tuned for results in next month’s newsletter!

HOCKEYFinals action

With just three rounds to go in the regular season, half of the UTS Hockey Club’s teams are headed for finals action in September. Men’s 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades are safely in their respective top 4, with 3rds undefeated for the season so far. Having won the Grand Final in 2008 and 2009, they are hoping to make it a trifecta to cap off a perfect year.

In the Sydney Women’s Hockey League competition, UTS 1st Grade are also headed for the finals, aiming to win the Division 2 competition and earn promotion back into Division 1 for 2011. The 4th Grade girls are also clinging on to 4th spot, hoping to defend their Division 6 Premiership from last season.

The UTS Veterans team are also on track to win their Division 4 competition, and promotion back into Vets Division 3.

Over in the Sydney North competition, the 5th Grade team look Grand Final bound in A Grade, whilst the mighty U18 girls in C Grade will also be challenging for the silverware in a few weeks time, presently leading the minor premiership by a big margin.

UTS Hockey stars of the future took to the pitch a few weeks ago, competing in the Manly-Warringah Minkey Carnival. 25 kids entered, ranging in age from 4 to 9, in 3 teams. Well done to the players and coaches who took part. The Junior programme recently received funding from the Woolworths ‘Fresh Foods Kids Community Grants’. The money will go towards equipment and venue hire for our junior development programmes.

To hold this position has taken a huge effort from the club’s players, coaches and committee given the number of players unavailable due to injury, coupled with the fact that training has been washed-out for the past 4-5 weeks. As far as individual teams go, the 1st and 4th Grade teams are both in the top four of their respective competitions and 2nd and 3rd Grade are sitting just outside the four and still have a great chance of making finals.

HANDBALLWomen’s Junior World Championships

The Handball competition at Olympic Park is nearing the end of the season. Both men’s and women’s teams are preparing for the finals, with the women’s team currently placed second on the ladder.

On the 4th on July three UTS handball members; Rachel Lodewijks, Estelle Guyon and Verena Müller traveled to Coffs Harbour to compete at Eastern University games. The UTS team also had some players who had never played handball before. But with some training they picked up the sport very quickly. The team had lots of fun and UTS Handball was able to win the whole tournament and take home the gold!

The club would also like to congratulate UTS players Rachel Lodewijks and Sonja Miskovic for representing Australia at the Women's Junior Handball World Championship 2010. Janne Lilleeng, the UTS women’s coach, was the coach of the Australian Junior Women’s team. They travelled to Seoul, Korea on the 12th of July and played against Spain, Japan, Hungary, Brazil, Thailand, Hong Kong and Greenland. They were able to win a game against Hong Kong 27 to 19. This was a great achievement as they became the first Australian Women’s team to win a game at the world level.

Rachel Lodewijks said ‘I thought it was an amazing experience. It was a great feeling to represent Australia and an honor to sing the national anthem. It was also a humbling experience to play at such a high level and play against

professional handball athletes. I meet people from all around the world and found new friends. At the beginning I was quite nervous, but I gradually gained more confidence during each game. I think it has helped me to improve a lot as a handball player’

These results show that the two teams have been training hard, and are looking forward to taking on the competition in Perth in September.

AFLMinor Premiers

The Bats are preparing for an assault on the Sydney AFL finals, with their first three grades having booked a spot in the finals. Division 1 finished as Minor Premiers, Division 2 finished 2nd (up from 3rd in 2009) and Division 3 also finished 2nd (up from 4th in 2009). In what has been the highlight of the season, Fourths finished in 5th place in Division 4. The club has also been announced official Sydney AFL Club Champions for 2010, for the second year in a row.

On Saturday 21st August they also hosted a group of almost 100 UTS International students, who watched the Thirds thump Macquarie and the Firsts easily beat the North Shore Bombers. The students had a great day, learning the Bats team song and taking to the field for a ‘longest kick’ competition at half time.

SWIMMINGTelstra Austral ian Shor t Course Championships

The UTS Swimming Club has witnessed some great achievements over the past month. Most notably has been UTS Student Alexander Patrulescu's performance at the 2010 Telstra Australian Short Course Championships. There he represented UTS in the 50m, 100m, 200m and the 400m Freestyle. Competing against the likes of Eamon Sullivan, Alex did UTS proud with this demanding line up of events.

UTS Swimming Club also sent a team to compete at the regional Mounties Carnival at Homebush. There student and Club President Nicholas Bentley achieved a 5th in the Open 50m Butterfly and a 6th in the Open 50m Freestyle. The team saw many personal bests and used the carnival as warm up for the upcoming Australian University Games.

Over the next month the club will be training solely for the University Games, where they are aiming to achieve some high ranking finalist results.

VOLLEYBALLBronze for UTSSU Women’s Austral ian Volleyball League squad

UTS comes to the end of a very successful Sydney Volleyball League season, with all six teams qualifying for the final series. The four women’s teams and two men’s teams are to be commended on their success so far, and are wished all the best by the club for the business end of the season.

The club's Women’s Australian Volleyball League team, UTSSU (partnered with the University of Sydney) won the bronze medal in the 2010 finals, defeating South Australia at the State Volleyball Centre in Melbourne.
