Welcome to all new students for 2016 and welcome back to everyone else! We’re sure you enjoyed your longer than usual break and are ready for the action packed Semester One that we have planned for you!

Semester One has something for everyone. There’s Social Sports in the Ross Milbourne Sports Hall (RMSH), Eastern University Games and plenty of events for the non-sporty types as well. Make sure you know about everything coming up by checking the calendar inside (page 12) and heading to Facebook to like our page, UTS Sport.

Inside this issue, we go back to 2015 and cover a few events from last year, our night of nights, the Blues Sporting Awards, the Redbull Campus Cricket T20 World Finals trip to India and the Sports Clubs Bay Run! See what our sports clubs have on offer for 2016 and meet two of our Elite Athletes.

On page 9 we help you keep up with those New Year resolutions with tips on how to set goals for a fitter and healthier 2016. A great first step for those fitness goals is joining UTS’ very own gym, ActivateFit on Harris with special discounted prices for students!

The calendar for Semester 1 on page 12 and 13 is a great way to make sure you know when you can get involved. Get a team together for FREE events like the UTS Amazing Race and the UTS Sports Challenge. The prizes are always great too!

Eastern University Games will be in Wollongong this July and if you think you have what it takes to represent Team UTS, make sure you make your way down to the trials. All the details will be on our Facebook page.

That’s all from us for now and we will see you again in Semester 2 with even more events and activities to get involved in!

For anything sport at UTS, come and see us in the Sports Office in Building 4.

BLUES SPORTING AWARDS 11 December, 2015 saw UTS’ sporting elite swap their sports gear for formal wear to celebrate UTS Sport’s night of nights, the Blues Sporting Awards. The Aerial UTS Function Centre was transformed into an incredible setting to celebrate the achievements of Team UTS, our elite athletes and our sporting clubs.

2015 BLUES SPORTING AWARDS NIGHT WINNERS

The night begun with a recap video highlighting how wide spread and impressive the success of those involved with UTS Sport really is. With 33 sports clubs based all over Sydney, hundreds of students travelling to represent Team UTS at University Games and Championships, as well as elite athletes competing all over the country and internationally, the UTS Sport brand is well and truly getting out there.

ActivateUTS CEO, Liz Brett, was delighted to announce that UTS had finished 3rd overall in the Australian University Sport competition combining results from University Games and all the University Championships including snow sports, triathlon and distance running. After several years of finishing 4th, 2015 was the first time UTS was able to make the top 3 which is usually dominated by sporting powerhouses Sydney, Melbourne and Monash.

The number of award recipients on the night proves that UTS is in good stead to make the top 3 sporting universities in the country again in 2016. Not only do our elite athletes and teams make this possible but the support from all the clubs and talented sports administrators and managers involved with sport at UTS make 2016 prospects very exciting!

BROOKE LAWRENCE KENNETH TO

1 How are you enjoying UTS so far?I absolutely love UTS; I’m about to begin my last semester of my degree and will be sad to leave! The uni has provided me with so many opportunities over the last three years, and from each of them have met so many new people and made amazing new friends.

2 Tell us a little bit about your sport/what you do:I’m a netballer; so basically the female dominated version of basketball (for those who have no idea of the sport). I’m currently playing for the UTS St George Sparks in the Netball NSW Premier League Competition. We’re just about to begin our second block of pre-season training and commence our competition in April this year. I’m a WD / C / GD, and on the extreme occasion have also played WA (although am hopeless at it), and aim to be the starting WD for the Sparks in 2016. I’ve also played netball for UTS at EUG’s and AUG’s for the last three years.

3 How often do you train?Currently for the Sparks we are training around 2-3 times a week, although training schedules differ between players who have other training commitments. Personally I like throwing in an extra session or two on top of this regime each week, depending on injuries or other commitments.

4 What do you consider your greatest sporting achievement?Probably being part of the NSW team in under 17’s, 19’s and 21’s. Although I actually never won a gold medal with these teams, my biggest achievement would have to be playing in the U17’s nationals grand final in 2011. Yes it was a few years ago, and no we didn’t win; but it’s a moment I will never forget. Our team came out absolutely firing from the start of the game to just get clipped in the last minute by 2 goals. Although we only won silver, nobody in the competition thought we’d ever come close to beating the Victorian’s as we got annihilated in our round game, but we played out of our skin to stay in the lead for the majority of the game.

5 What do you consider your greatest non-sporting achievement?Getting through my university degree (almost). I finished high school without even considering coming to university, and now with one semester to go and a degree in my sights I’d have to say it’s a great personal achievement.

6 What are your goals for 2016 and beyond? For the year ahead my goal is to play consistently each week for the Sparks in Premier League, anything on top of that will be a bonus!

1 How are you enjoying UTS so far?Having started my degree in 2015, I’ve spent 1 full year at UTS so far and have enjoyed it immensely. Studying full-time, I completed all 8 of my core business subjects and made a bunch of friends through class which have made my life at uni a fun experience. Exam and assessment periods have been busy no doubt, but with the support of some incredible staff I’ve been able to juggle all my uni requirements successfully - thus far!

2 Tell us a little bit about your sport/what you do:Outside of academic life, I’ve been fortunate to have had quite a successful career in my sport of swimming. I started this pursuit from a very young age and have mainly competed in the 200m Individual Medley, but as this race encompasses all 4 strokes I race in a lot of 100m stroke events plus relays too. To date I have represented Australia at 4 World Championships, the Commonwealth Games in 2014, and am hoping to race at the Olympic Games in 2016.

3 How often do you train? As a sport, swimming is definitely considered one of the most gruelling to train for. We don’t have any ‘off-season’ so we end up training all year round to maintain our fitness levels. On an average week I would swim 40-50km total over 9 x 2 hour pool sessions plus do 2 x 1.5 hour gym sessions. We spread this evenly over the week so we can recover and back up for the next session - which is very often the afternoon that day or next morning!

4 What do you consider your greatest sporting achievement? My greatest achievement in the sport would have to be winning the male overall point score of the Swimming World Cup in 2012. I was leading on the point score from the start and was able to hold my composure over the course of 3 months in competitions across 8 different cities to win the title. It was my first taste of big success in the sport and has always reminded and motivated me as I continue forward with my swimming pursuits.

5 What do you consider your greatest non-sporting achievement? My greatest non-sporting achievement to date I would consider to be the ATAR score of 97.80 I was able to achieve in my final year of high school. I was 17 back then and elected not to do Pathways but instead train plus study as hard as I could for the full year and I was glad it paid off. To this day I can’t really fathom or explain just how busy I would have been and think I have my high school, Trinity Grammar, to thank to be able to help me through it all.

6 What are your goals for 2016 and beyond? As swimming is an Olympic sport my primary goal for 2016 is clear; and that is to represent Australia at the Olympic Games in Rio later this year. Having narrowly missed the team due to appendicitis in 2012, it’s the only major event I have not competed at yet is the biggest stage in our sport. To be able to prove myself there would be great, and then beyond that continue to improve onward to the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 2020 Olympics.

We are a Northern Sydney based NSW Athletics club which prides itself on being one of the strongest performing athletics clubs in Australia in all age groups including Juniors, Open and Masters Athletes. There are a number of programs at the club in conjunction with the UTS EAP to develop our juniors locally and our UTS Students into potential World Class athletes through top quality coaches and facilities based around the Rotary Athletics Field in Lane Cove.

Our season runs all year round, with the season starting in October and finishing with the winter season in late August/early September. This includes the club premiership which runs over summer, the state and national championship events from March to April and the Winter Season which focuses primarily on long distance, cross country and road running.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT OF 2015

Our best achievement of 2015 was winning the Summer Premiership of the 2014/15 athletics season, taking it out from traditional rivals Sydney University.

PLANS FOR 2016

We are already on track to win consecutive Summer Premiership titles, so a big goal is to secure that title. But the club is also committed to improving coach development for the calendar year and expanding our number of elite level athletes.

ONE SOCK

You can help give a voice to the elephant in the room.

ONE GOAL

@batyraus

What is 'Batyr'? Batyr is a for-purpose organisation (not for profit) that aims to engage, educate

and empower young people to speak out about mental health issues. Batyr uses young

speakers with a lived mental health experience to encourage other young people to reach out

for help when they need to.

What we do: Batyr offers school (Batyr@School) and university (Batyr@Uni) programs that use

young speakers with relatable, lived social or mental health experiences to educate students on

the support networks and services available to them and empower them to reach out when

needed. Since its conception in 2011, Batyr has reached over 16,000 students through its

programs, and 100 young people have been trained through the Being Herd Program to share

their journeys of mental ill health and seeking help.

The One Sock One Goal campaign encourages young people, individuals and teams to wear

one bright blue Batyr sock with one of their own team socks at sporting events. The aim is to

start positive conversations around mental health and raise awareness of mental health issues

facing young people. The money raised goes towards ensuring more young people get access

to Batyr's preventive mental health programs.

Head to www.batyr.com.au to find out how.

The team was founded in 2012 with the reintroduction of the AUS triathlon program involving a men’s and women’s Olympic Distance Championship. UTS came away with the men’s pennant and an overall second place to the University of Sydney.

In 2013 the competition expanded to include 4 races in each calendar, again in the men’s and women’s Olympic distances. After establishing a strong male cohort in 2012 the boys were able to once again take out the premiership after a second place finish in the ACT event, a first place in the QLD event, and a first place finish in the NSW event. Importantly in 2013, UTS had a strong influx of female athletes willing to give triathlon a shot. This lead to UTS winning both the men’s and women’s pennant in 2013 and taking the overall Championship.

TEAM UTS TRIATHLON

From 2013 the student run team and program has grown ever stronger offering students the chance to give their first triathlon a go or develop their passion for triathlon further. 2014 returned another male and female premiership for the UTS Team. In 2015 AUS has expanded the championship to further include a sprint series as well as an Olympic series. UTS responded to the expansion of the event with an ever growing cohort of eager athletes and finished with wins in all 4 categories.

Never too far from the university classrooms or the local pools and parks you can find members of the team studying and training hard. If you have ever thought about giving a triathlon a go or picking it up again UTS is the place to do it. Search for the group on Facebook ‘UTS Triathlon Team’ or visit the sports office and ask for Alex.

WATER POLO

Just past the half way point in the Australian Water Polo League and UTS is currently sitting 6th in the Women’s competition and 10th in the Men’s competition. With the top 6 teams making finals in the Australia wide competition both teams are still in with a red hot chance of making finals. UTS has a strong tradition in Water Polo with both the Women’s and Men’s teams competing in the Division 1 competition at the Australian University Games.

FUTSAL

Just 3 rounds left in the NSW Premier League Futsal competition and UTS Northside Futsal Club is sitting in 6th position overall in the NSW Club Championship points race. The Premier League is the highest level competition of futsal in the state with each club submitting teams from under 12’s right up into the open age group. Once the Premier League season concludes the UTS Futsal club then turns their attention to recruitment for the Eastern and Australian University Games for 2016.

NETBALL

2016 marks the first season of the new NSW Premier League Netball competition. UTS was one of 8 franchises to be granted a license into this competition and also the only University club to make the grade. The competition is set to begin in April 2016 but you will already be able to see the girls training hard on campus every Monday and Wednesday night at the UTS Ross Milbourne Sports Hall in building 4 of the UTS City Campus.

HOCKEY

Pre-Season training is up and running for 2016 and the UTS Hockey Club. VOLLEYBALL

The UTS Volleyball Club will be holding open trials for Men and Women over the month of February and March. As one of the elite clubs at UTS, the UTS Volleyball club competes in the Sydney Volleyball League and Australian Volleyball League, the premier competitions in NSW and Australia. The club also runs one of the largest social volleyball competitions in Sydney on Thursday nights at the UTS Sydney Boys High Stadium.

KENDO

The UTS Kendo Club is currently preparing for the Hong Kong International which will be held at the end of February. After dominating the 2015 Australian Kendo season UTS has been granted a special invite to this prestigious Kendo competition which is only usually reserved for state or national bodies. The club has been training 5 times a week at the UTS Ross Milbourne Sports Hall over the past 2 months in preparation for this competition and will be going over in great shape.

AFL

The UTS AFL Club is all go for 2016, with their pre-season training starting in January. The UTS AFL Club is one of the premier Aussie Rules Football clubs in NSW playing in the Sydney AFL competition. The Club has 4 senior Men’s teams and 1 senior Women’s team. The 2015 Sports Clubs Bay Run saw 59 runners (and a puppy) take on the 7km bay run track starting at the UTS Haberfield Club. The day went really well with 13 runners coming in under the 30 minute mark, with special mention to Ruairidh MacDonald (UTS Norths) who took out the event in an amazing 22:54 minutes! After everyone had finished, all of our runners and helpers were treated to a BBQ breakfast at the club. As a result of the day, almost $3000 was raised for UTS Sports Clubs!

October 2015 saw 15 UTS Cricketers head to Dehradun, India, to compete in the Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals. The boys had a tough pool including Bangladesh and India but were able to finish 3rd with an impressive win over Bangladesh setting the target for 119 and holding them out with some impressive bowling. Not only did the boys get a chance to play some international cricket, they also had a few days to explore their impressive surroundings.
