TRANSCENDENTALIST • Transcendentalism is a formal word that

describes a very simple idea. People, men and women equally, have knowledge about themselves and the world around them that "transcends" or goes beyond what they can see, hear, taste, touch or feel.

• They believe people can trust themselves to be their own authority

• Nature is great.!• Don’t need wealth and status • ANYONE CAN BE A

ROBERT OWEN • Robert Owen founded

in 1825 a communal society in order to

seek human betterment, All Utopias FAILED

• Founder of New Harmony and Brook

NEW HARMONY

• New Harmony in Indiana 1825• Each person had their own view of a perfect community • There was only a 1,000 people • Community failed

BROOK FARM

60% of the community were men Unmarried women enjoyed same

freedom at Brook Farm that single women did in American society in general

Lack of family made Brook Farm hard to sustain in the long run

“plain living and high thinking’ collapsed in debt 1847

ONEIDA COMMUNITY • John Humphrey Noyes founded

the Oneida Community • Noyes believed that humans

can be kind, and that there was a possibility to a perfect Christian community

• Are free to love one another in complex marriage ( marriage between more than two people )

• They took care of each others children

OVERALL • Various groups, struggling under the pressures of

urbanization and industrialization so they came together to make their ideal Utopian communities. They challenged the traditional norms and social conservatism of American society.
