“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.”-----Edgar degas

How can people express their thoughts and feelings? There are thousand types of representation in the world. Art must be a most beautiful way to show people’s minds. The IB Art exhibition brought together 12 students with very high artistic values to people in Redtory. We can say, those students brought their own ideas and lots of energy into this exhibition. It was a good shrug of expression of ideas of these students, through art. ------From writer

EggArtist: ArpakonInspiration, sincerity and spirituality

This artwork shows the theme of “Belief”. The Egg is the symbol of love, it including how hard it is for a bird to breed a new life and shows that how much love the parents spend in a newborn. The flower inside shows life, and vitality; the blue feathers symbolized inspiration, sincerity and spirituality; at last, the butterflies were an expression of the result of upbringing. For a newborn, the parent always need responsibility, love and lots of energy, but in this process, we also can find supersize, happiness from it, like what it shows in the work.

Listen to me?Artist: Pauline

I'm ready to communicate with you

now.

This is a work that connects the

generation gap. For us, as the reviewed this

piece of art, The little boy on the left side is

screaming inside a cup phone or string phone,

he is trying to say something to the man on the left. But the man is

not listening, instead of holding the other end of the cup phone to

his ear, he is drinking from the cup, he has the wrong connection.

Pauline put the blue cut out pattern over the top to show that

what the boy is saying has value and that the adult should notice

him and listen to what he wants to say. Are you ready to bridge

the gap?

MemoryArtist: Jade Baek

The good things you make disappear, but the bad ones remains and disturb. Have you ever played Tetris? This was a

piece of work that is connected to it. Jade’s

work is focused around the theme of

“Potential”, this artwork also shows

human life. A human’s life is same as

playing “Tetris”. There are many different

kinds of squares in it, each one has a different meaning:

Depart, communication, eating, pets, fall in love and argument.

Sometimes, we think life is like Tetris;

they come in different sizes, shapes,

and colors. We have no control over

what comes our way. Just like we

don’t know what will happen

tomorrow, we don’t know what

piece will come at us next. We just

have to make the best of what we

are given. But, the main thing is how

can you run your own Tetris.

Model United Nations – Being an international member by. Emily KimModel United Nations (MUN) is a simulation of the United Nations organized by students and schools. The students, who participate in MUN role-play as the chairmen and delegates representing particular countries, or global organizations, discuss about current issues around the world and give resolutions. Our school has participated two MUN conferences this year. The first conference was THIMUN in Qatar during the end of January. The other one was BEIMUN (the 20th anniversary), which was held in Beijing of the middle of March. There were about 7~10 students chosen to attend MUN conferences. This year, the school represented Ukraine and Belgium in each conference. Every student was responsible for taking part in different committees. Such as politics, economics, military, environment and human rights.

the advantages above. “I get to meet a lot of people in the real conference,” said Jenna Kim, a year 11 student who represented the ambassador of Ukraine in THIMUN conference, “It is a great opportunity to get to know how other people think about world issues and how they could be solved.”Moreover, experience MUN inspires students to consider global issues and broaden their career consideration slated to international relations, politics, and economics and so on. “Attending MUN made me feel like being a diplomat, or a lawyer,” said one of the students participated in BEIMUN conference, “Though I need to spend my extra time researching on the country I representing and making reliable resolutions.”There is no doubt that Model United Nations has encouraged students to broaden their minds to be ” international members”.

Family Fun DayReporter: Keri Chak; Kelly Chou

Cameraman: Masahiko On April.14th, our school held a big event for both students and their families. This event aimed to build a closer relationship between children and their parents closer. There were lots of different stalls and activities, food, drinks, shops and games. As its name” Fun Day”, that was really a fun day! At 9:30, all the students who volunteered for this event met in the canteen to get familiar with their task. After about one and half of arranging the stalls, everything was prepared, as more and more people came into the school. The highlight of the day was the performance by the winner of the ‘Battle of the Bands.’ The band, Stigma, performed two songs on stage. They had confidence and the voice of the vocalist moved people’s heart that one of the parents was about to cry. The event was coming to an end, which meant the raffle would begin. Mr. Kent Highet came up on the stage and picked the names of the winners, one by one. People all stood right in front of the stage, waiting for their numbers to be called. The picking of lot went on for an hour, and we could easily tell if they won a prize or not by looking at expression of people’s face.

Page 13: Utile

The family fun day was awesome.. Everyone enjoyed his or her wonderful shows. The event is over but will be held again next year. What the Student Magazine thinks is that the Family Fun Day brought delightfulness and brightness to every family and created another unforgettable memory for the families. The Student Magazine members also enjoyed the event and looks forward to another successful and entertaining Family Fun Day next year.

Chinese Love Poetry------ By British Museum.

IntroductionThe three arts of poetry, calligraphy and painting are regarded in China as the “Triple Excellence”. Chinese love poems are far subtler and less spiritually intense than in the Western poetic tradition. Please enjoy those Chinese love poetry.

On a Summer Day Remembering West LakeBy Yu Qian (1389-1457)

Outside Yongjin Gate the willows are like smoke,

On the Lady of the West’s lake the water pats the sky.

Arms jade-whites and damask-skirted couples wave the oar,

Mandarin duck are drake fly near the lotus-pickers’ boat.

To…By Li Shangyin(813-58)

Hard it was to see each other-Harder still to part!

The east wind has on force, the hundred flowers wither.

The silkworm dies in spring when her thread in spun;

The candle dries its tears only when burnt to the end.

Grief at the morning mirror- cloud-like hair must change;

Verses hummed at night feeling the chill of moonlight…

Yet from here to Paradise the way is not so far:

Helpful bluebird, bring me news of her.

News of Opera Giselle by Royal New Zealand Ballet

Reporter: Zi Yi

“I just loved it! To see a classical ballet that

had really been taken apart and put back

together again ... every single one of those

arabesques and every movement ... had a

reason and it showed.”

——Deirdre Tarrant, Radio New

Zealand Concert FM

“Giselle” must be one of the best ballet opera. “Giselle”

performed on 26th~ 27th of April at 8 p.m., when we come

to Guangzhou Opera house to saw this ballet shows, we

didn’t know, it will be kinds of memory in our mind, and it

will not never die.

The ballet tells the story of a lovely peasant girl named

Giselle who has a passion for dancing, and when she finds

out the man

Page 17: Utile

she loves is engaged to someone else she dies of a broken

heart.

Considered one of the great Romantic ballets of all time,

Giselle was first performed in Paris in 1841, and it has

become one of the most performed ballets in the world.

Disguise and revelation, love and jealousy combine in this

tragic tale. Now a new staging of this quintessential ballet is

co-produced by Ethan Stiefel, artistic director of the Royal

New Zealand Ballet, and Johan Kobborg, internationally

acclaimed principal dancer of London’s Royal Ballet. Since

its premiere in 2012, it has praised by the media as “One

of the finest Giselles I have ever seen” ... “A triumph for

the company in every way” (Ann Hunt, Radio New Zealand

Arts on Sunday). Giselle is the most dramatic and beautiful

of ballets and Royal New Zealand Ballet’s brand new

production; a must-see in 2013.production; a must-see in 2013.

Andy Warhol’s Quotation

“The best time for me is when I don’t have any problems that I can’t buy my way out of.”

“Don’t be pushy, but let everybody know you’re around.”

“It doesn’t mean if you don’t believe in nothing that it’s nothing. You have to treat the nothing as if it were something. Make something out of nothing.”

“That’s a three-part rule of mine: 1) Never complain about a situation while the situation is still going

on; 2) If you can’t believe it’s happening, pretend it’s a movie; and 3) After it’s over, find somebody to pin

the blame on and never let them forget it.”

Student’s perspective“All the good that a smile can do”

by Rei Kawamoto

“We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do”. These are the words of Mother Teresa. Personally I feel, a simple smile has incredible power too, as her words say.First of all, there is no one who can’t smile. A simple is one of the abilities that we are all given. Nowadays, smile has been scientifically proved to bring good to our lives. With this knowledge, we should smile more.

As I said, a smile has been scientifically proved to be related to good health. There are countless advantages of an effective smile. I would like to mention three advantages.Do you think about an unhappy event while you are smiling? I would say NO. You may think about something happy or nothing. While you are smiling, your heart is filled with a feeling of well-being. Then your breathing, pulse and blood pressure will be regular and calm. Also you will be able to relax at that time. To relax is a great relief for stress. A smile has effects stress reduction.

Human beings have about five billion of Natural Killer cell (NK cell) which is a cell for immunity. It is increased if you smile. Therefore a smile can protect us from disease such as cancer. For example, there was a patient who has a cancer. He periodically watches comedy shows then relaxes and laugh within that period of time. After that his number of NK cells was much higher than before. It inhibited his cancer cell growth. So a simple, smile

Page 22: Utile

can improve our immunity and protect us from getting diseases.A smile makes you beautiful not only from within but also from the outside. When you smile, you must use facial muscles of expression. You might get tired of using it but it has a tightening effect and acts as a wrinkle defense. You must keep smiling for your future!!The first impression is a lasting impression. From these words, it’s not too much to say that the first impression is the most important for our entire life. When you meet with someone new, if he/she doesn’t smile, it wonder he/she is narrows or in a bad mood. Our basic concept of smiling is when you feel happy. Let’s break the fixed concept. If you are even in a sad situation, you must try to make smile. Then you might feel better than just feeing sad. The person who can smile in any situation can be able to think things positively. Being positive can certainly change your life. When I belonged to a cheer dance club, we had to smile even if we felt tired and didn’t want to dance any more. At first, we just were pushed to smile compulsorily, however we could feel the fun after a few minutes because of smiling. In my experience, a smile has a psychological effect that enables you forgot every bad thing.A simple smile has incredible and countless influences on health, impression and mind. These things are only one part of the influences. As Mother Teresa said, we shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do and it is certain that every effect is great for every single person. Finally, a smile is free to use! Also if you smile, not only yourself but also the other person can feel happy and be positive. So, a smile is the best way to make someone happy!!

QuoteLife’s like a play; It's not the length, but the excellence of

the acting that matters.

At last it dawned on method there is no way to happiness.

Happiness is the way.

Has not been difficult, the does not have attains.

When either your joy or your sorrow becomes great, the

world become small.

Life is tiring. If you are not tired now, you will get more tired

later.

Better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.

Don't judge my path, if you haven't walked my journey.

To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also

dream. Not only plan, but also believe.

The fool has his heart on his tongue; the wise man keeps

his tongue in his heart.

The secret to happiness is this: Let your interest be as

wide as possible, and let your reactions to the things and

persons that interest you be as far as possible friendly

rather than hostile.
