FINAL CHAPTER –

MAHAVIR BHAGWAN Observing the details of Bhagavan Mahavir’s twelve year period of spiritual practices it becomes evident that his practices combined four qualities-1. Deep and undisturbed meditation, 2. Rigorous penance, 3. Extreme tolerance of pain, and 4. Ultimate equanimity. It was the tenth day of the bright half of the month of Vaishakh. Twelve years five months and fifteen days had passed since the beginning of Mahavir’s spiritual practices. Prabhu Mahavir sat in mediation under a Saal tree in a garden on the back of Rijubaluka river. Sitting on both feet with knees touching his chest, he was feeling calm even in the scorching summer sun. Focusing all his physical, mental and spiritual energies he was engrossed in deep and pure meditation. Gradually the sun was setting in the west and within the soul of Bhagavan Mahavir the sun of omniscience was rising. As soon as the dark clouds of four deeply binding Karmas scattered, the all enlightening sun of omniscience dawned. The physical world was being envelop by the darkness of night but the spiritual would was being filled with the light of infinite rays of knowledge. The endeavor had reached the summit of success and attained the goal. Mahavir had become Bhagavan (God), Jina (Victor), Sarvajna (all knowing), and Sarvadarshi (all perceiving). As soon as he became omniscient a soothing light spread in the three worlds for a few seconds. The living world was filled with a strange feeling of hitherto unknown bliss. The First Discourse

After a twelve and a half year long period of extreme spiritual practices Shraman Vardhaman acquired the ultimate perception (Kewal Darshan), and ultimate knowledge (Kewal Jnan or omniscience). To greet and eulogize the first ray of the divine sun of Mahavir’s infinite knowledge, innumerable gods and goddesses from heavens landed on the earth. Doing Vandana of Prabhu Mahavir they celebrated the ultimate attainment (Kivalya). Traditionally a Tirthankar preaches the religion of equanimity (Ahimsa) immediately after his gaining omniscience. To take advantage of the first divine discourse of Mahavir the gods created the divine pavilion (Samavasaran) on the pious banks of Rijubaluka river. Numerous gods were engrossed in listening the discourse.

The gods may admire and eulogize truth, discipline, and virtues but they cannot do spiritual practices by taking vows. Only man is Capable of entering the discipline of spiritual practices. As such, it is aid that in absence of a human being the first discourse of Bhagavan Mahavir was a failure in context of spiritual gains as none of those present took any vow. From the bank of Rijubaluka river Mahavir came to Madhyam Pava. A divine pavilion was created in the Mahasen jungle. During that month of Vaishak Som Shrama had organized a great yajna. Eleven famous and great scholars with their 4400 disciples had come to participate in this Yagna. Thousands of people from far and near were arriving to behold the pious flames of the Yajna. Thus, Mhahyam Pava had become a place of pilgrimage. On hearing of the sudden arrival of Bhagavan Mahavir, Pandit Som Sharma become worried and disturbed due to the anti Yajan attitude of the Shraman culture. He went to the chief guide of the Yajna, Mahapandit Indrabhuti. They all confabulated but were short of ideas. Indrabhuti finally said, "Shraman Vardhaman is certainly a person to reckon with. He has the power of spiritual practice and fire of penance but still in knowledge he will prove to be no match for us. With out unmatched power of knowledge we should be able to defeat him now and subjugate a rising adversary in time. We need not worry. It is probable that this pious day may turn out to be the day of our ultimate victory." This hope filled assurance form Mahapandit Indrabhuti made all the other scholars happy. Som Sharma started dreaming of the victory of the Brahman Yajna organization. Indrabhuti with this 500 disciples proceeded to confront Mahavir. Indrabhuti and the Self

Indrabhuti’s mind got a shock the moment he put his first step inside the divine pavilion. His mind got agitated. From the distance he saw the astonishing glow on the face of Shraman Mahavir. When the powerful sun rays fall on the Himalayan ice caps the ice starts melting. Similarly Indrabhuti’s ego started melting. He felt as if streams of doubt and uncertainty had started emerging and flowing. "Indrabhuti Gautam! You have arrived?"

Page 7: UTH-N-YNG 35th Issue by JAY-HO

The deep resonant voice of Prabhu Mahavir fell on Indrabhuti’s ears the moment he entered the third gate of the assembly. "Mahavir recognizes me!" Indrabhuti was astonished; he thought, "Of course, he must have heard of me, the world famous scholar." "Indrabhuti Gautam, although you are a great scholar of Vedas, you are still doubtful of the existence of soul." When these words in the imposing voice of Mahavir echoed in the ears of Indrabhuti he was stunned. Prabhu sweetly uttered in friendly tone, "Indrabhuti Gautam, you doubt about if the soul is based on your knowledge of the Vedas. But the same Vedas contain undeniable proof of independent existence of the soul. Have you ever thought what is a soul? Who is it? and who is it that has this knowledge is the cognizant factor of soul. Soul is an entity that is formless and beyond the sensory realm, it can be perceived not through the sense organs but through direct intuitive experience . . ." Listening to the Vedic aphorisms and irrefutable logic of Mahavir about the existence of soul, Indrabhuti’s doubts were removed. His ego melted. With the rising of humility the divine ray of truth became visible. The darkness within Gautam was dispelled. With overflowing respect and curiosity Gautam fell at the feet of Prabhu Mahavir. "Prabhu, I came with a desire to be victorious, but now I am only a seeker of knowledge. Please bestow on me the infinite knowledge of truth. I wish to become a disciple and sit at your divine feet." "You are welcome, O beloved of gods!" Mahavir uttered equally. Indrabhuti Gautam became the first disciple of Bhagavan Mahavir. His five hundred disciples were also initiated by Mahavir into the order. The sky reverberated with sounds of hailing. The news of initiation of Gautam brought shadow soft gloom over the Yajna site where the scholars were waiting. But the second great scholar, Agnibhuti, summoned courage and said, "I will go and bring back my brother by defeating Mahavir." Agnibhuti also arrived at the religious assembly with hi five hundred disciples. As soon as he

entered the pavilion and approached Mahavir, Mahavir said, "Agnibhuti, your senior has his cobwebs of doubt cleared, he has now become unambiguous. Now you should also remove your quandary about the fruits of Karma. As the existence of soul is self evident, it is also established that it is soul that is the doer of the Karma (action) and the sufferer of its consequences (fruit)." The moment his doubt was removed the shackles of dogmas shattered. With the vanishing of ego a stream of faith started flowing within Agnibhuti. He also submitted before the omniscience of Shraman Mahavir along with his 500 disciples. The youngest brother of Indrabhuti, Vayabhuti, also decided to try his luck with his 500 disciples. As a thirsty person stops at a source of clean water, Vayabhuti stayed with Mahavir and along with his 500 disciples joined Mahavir’s order. Great scholars like Vyakta and Arya Sudharma also came and removing their doubts became Mahavir’s disciples along with 500 followers each. Similarly, Mauryaputra and Akampit with their 350 disciples each; Achalbhrata, Metarya, and Prabhas each with 300 disciples got initiated into Mahavir’s order. Thus, eleven great scholars were inducted with their 4400 disciples into Mahavir’s order during his first discourse.

Establishment of the Ford

The eleventh day of the bright half of the month of Vaishakh is considered to be the date of the historical glory of the Jain tradition. On the tenth of the same month, Bhagavan Mahavir attained omniscience, so the day is important as the occasion of his personal triumph. But from the view point of establishing the religious organization (Tirth/Ford) the eleventh is the most important day. It was on this day that the eleven great Brahman scholars rid themselves of their egos of superiority by birth and the misconceptions, and were initiated into the Shraman tradition based on equanimity and Ahimsa. They became the chief disciples or Ganadhars of Mahavir. In Jain tradition, the Ganadhar is the most exalted spiritual person after the Tirthankar. Thousands of other men and women were also converted, many of whom became ascetics and others who took vows for laity.

Page 8: UTH-N-YNG 35th Issue by JAY-HO

Princess Chandanbala, who had fulfilled the complex resolve of Bhagavan Mahavir, was also waiting for this auspicious day. As soon as she received the news of Mahavir’s omniscience, she was over-joyed. She reached divine pavilion by the fastest available means. She was also accompanied by many worthy women. After listening to the discourse she became the first woman ascetic disciple of Mahavir. Shankh and Shatak with many other rich and prominent citizens joined Mahavir’s order as lay followers. Sulasa and many other women also joined the religious family. Thus, the land of Mahasen jungle in Madhyam Pava and the eleventh day of the bright half of the month of Vaishakh became the blessed land and the blessed day respectively. The Achievements

The twelve year period of spiritual practices of Bhagavan Mahavir was the basis of his personal achievement of omniscience and the status of Arihant/Tirthankar. After his enlightenment the remaining thirty years of his life were devoted to the welfare of the living world. During this period he revolutionized human thought and shattered many long established misconceptions and curses of traditional dogmas. His deeds and achievements in the fields of human welfare and upliftment as well as his contribution to the storehouse of human knowledge may be briefly summed up as: 1. He opposed the wanton human and animal sacrifice and the misleading rituals in the name of religious Yajnas for benefits in the next life. As a more humane and rational alternative he showed the path of Ahimsa. 2. He broke the established tradition of depriving women in general and men of lower castes from the formal study of scriptures and indulging in many religious activities. He was bold enough to initiate people from this section of society into his religious order. he provided equal rights an opportunities to all for study and practice of religion. He successfully rooted out the caste system in his area of influence at social and spiritual level.

3. Under his influence the established norms of social status based on caste, wealth, power and grandeur were shattered and new norms of social status based on virtues and moral and ethical values were established. 4. He used Ardha-Magadhi, the lingua-franca of that period for his discourses. Giving importance to folk culture and language of the masses over Sanskrit, the language of scholarly few and the upper class, he preached in eloquent and attractive style. 5. For the ascetics of his school pursuing the path of detachment with the help of discipline, penance, chanting and meditation, he also prescribed regular indulgence in activities of social welfare. His order included people from all sections of the society-Indrabhuti Gautam and many others from the Brahmin caste; Shalibhadra, Dhanna, and many others from the Vaishya caste; Megh Kumar, Nandishen, etc. from the Kshatriya caste; and Maitarya, Arjunmali, etc. from the Shudra caste. Among women prominent in his order Chandanabala, Mrigavati, Kali, etc. were from ruling families and Subhadra, Revati, etc. were from the merchant class. 6. The Shravakas (householders) in his organization included people from all walks of life. Udayi, Shrenik, Ajatshatru, etc. were kings; Anand was a farmer, Saddalputra was a potter; and Sulas was a butcher. 7. The religious organization of Mahavir was founded on virtues like detachment, equanimity, knowledge and discipline. 8. The original contributions of Mahavir were Ahimsa as the basis of code of conduct and relativity of thought (Anekant) as the basis of spiritual purity and equanimity. 9. As Mahavir had millions, of admires and followers, he also had opponents like Gaushalak and decenters like Jamali. For 5 to 6 years Jamali moved with Mahavir as his disciple. But later, driven by ambition and lust for popularity he became Mahavir’s opponent. He projected himself as omniscient and Tirthankar. The feeling of envy burning within him made him attack Mahavir and try to burn him. But the great pacifying powers of a true Tirthankar defeated him. Compassionate Mahavir still forgave him and advised to work for purity of the soul.

The Liberation

At the request of king Hastipal Mahavir spent his last monsoon-stay at Pavapuri (Apapapuri at the age of 72 years. When about three and a half months passed he became aware that the end of his life is approaching. Ganadhar Gautam was overly attached with Mahavir. He may not be completely swept away by the sorrow of separation- thinking thus Mahavir directed him to go and enlighten Brahman Som Sharma. On The fifteenth day of the dark half of the month of Kartik Mahavir was observing a two days fast. He sat in the Samavasaran and gave his last discourse which became famous as Uttaradhyayan Sutra, Vipak Sutra, etc. Just before the hour of midnight he shed all his remaining Karmas and attained Nirvana. For a few moments the whole world was enveloped in darkness. Gods dispelled the darkness with the help of gems and humans lit earthen lamps to have the last glimpse of their savior. In memory of that day people celebrate the festival of lights or Dipawali. Hearing about the Nirvana of Bhagavan Mahavir, Ganadhar Gautam became sad and melancholic. But soon he came out of it and progressed on the path of purity with help of extreme detachment. Jumping the levels of spiritual purity he acquired omniscience the next morning. Gods and human beings celebrated jointly the events of attainment of Nirvana by Mahavir and omniscience by Ganadhar Gautam. After the Nirvana of Mahavir the responsibility of heading the large religious order came to his fourth chief disciple Arya Sudharmaswami. After Arya Sudharmaswami the order was headed by his disciple Arya Jambuswami. After the Nirvana of Arya Jambuswami (406 Before Vikram) the tradition of omniscients became extinct from Bharat area for this descending cycle of time.

Within the Chennai region, Maharashtra stood in fifth position, after Goa, Karnataka, Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu. However, the total number of students appearing for this exam from Goa and Pondicherry were only 169 and 165 respectively. Many schools in Mumbai agreed their averages were better than last year. "This year, 33 of our students scored above 90%, which is much better than last year. Some students complained about not faring well in certain subjects but overall the results are better with every passing year. The fact that percentages have been replaced with grades has also helped reduce stress in students," said Deepshikha Srivastava, principal of Rajhans Vidyalaya in Andheri (W). N D Joshi, principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya, IIT Powai, said around 20 out of their

130 class XII students scored above 90%, an increase from last year. Prabhjyot Singh Sodhi topped in the Science stream at his school, Apeejay School in Nerul. MAKE YOUR OWN NAIL PAINT AT HOME How many times have you thrown away half-used eye shadow because it was too old? Or tossed a broken eye shadow pot cause it was too messy to use? If you’ve done either of those things before, this tutorial is for you! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sent old eye shadow to the trash because it was too old or broken into bits. Finally I’ve found a way to re-purpose old eye shadow by turning it into nail polish. Yes, you read that correctly. Nail polish. Before I start, let me tell you, this DIY was SO FUN. One of my absolute favorites. It wasn’t tedious and didn’t take much time at all and my nail polish turned out so amazing! Supplies:

Sacrificial eye shadow (I used E.L.F. eye shadows, $1 for each mini palette) Clear nail polish (NYC, $1, worked really well) Scissors Funnel made from scrap paper Napkin or paper plate to work on Q-tips Optional: Glitter How to:

1. Decide what colors you want to include in each nail polish bottle. The amounts I used for each color are as follows: Eggplant: bright blue and bright purple. Forest: Silver blue/gray and green. Crème: The three lightest colors. Shimmer: Glitter only. I did not use the bright pink color at all. 2. Once you decide what colors you want your polish to be, crush them in the palette with the scissors. Dump onto a paper towel or napkin and continue to pulverize them into dust. It’s fun! Crush, crush, and crush! 3. Remove the lid/brush from a clear nail polish bottle and set that aside. Place funnel in the mouth of the bottle and pour the crushed pigment into the bottle. Watch it float down! It’s really cool. 4. Stir the pigment with a Q-tip and mix well. Place the lid back on the bottle and shake to complete the mixture process. That’s it! Your personally concocted nail polish is ready to wear. Amazing! Step by step photos below:

HOW TO SELECT A GOOD

STOCK An excellent place to start when looking for a

stock to purchase is the list of dividend

aristocrats: stocks that have consistently increased dividends every year for at least 25 years. You can find this by doing an internet search. In order to find most relevant items , you can do google search.

From this list, emphasize stocks that have

consistently rising revenue and earnings every

year for at least the past ten years. This is easily found by looking at 10-yr financial summary on a financial website like money.msn.com. Stocks that can consistently grow their revenues and earnings have strong moats and have the ability to increase shareholder value through dividend increase.Though the exception occurs, it means there also could be a chance that you can loose here in spite of having an excellent research. You have to rely on your luck at some instant.

Also look for positive and growing free cash flow: a good indicator of a healthy company.

Check the balance sheet. Preferably, there are a lot more assets than liabilities. Debt to equity ratio should be less than 1. Cash and other current assets should exceed current liabilities and, if possible, be sufficient to cover the long-term liabilities as well. Also, look for 0 next to "Preferred stocks". Preferred stocks are an expensive way of financing for corporations, so they should be absent in a high quality company.

Look on Yahoo for some "Key Statistics". All things being equal, a P/E that is under 20, a PEG close to 1.0, and a price/sales ratio that is in the middle or lower in a company's industrial grouping is a plus. Check also for the short ratio, if the ratio is high, at least over 3.0, then this means there are a lot of short-sellers probably present, and this may result in a squeeze of short-sellers if the stock price rises and they are scrambling to cover their borrowed shares already sold with newly purchased shares.

Page 21: UTH-N-YNG 35th Issue by JAY-HO

Read the latest quarterly (10-Q) and annual

(10-K) reports. These are easily found on the Yahoo Finance website.

Look at a chart. Use stockcharts.com

Know when to buy a stock. If you have a portfolio, consider an internally generated signal to make a purchase. If you have recently sold a stock at a loss, do not rush to replace it. Rather sit in cash and wait for a proper buying signal. Know when to sell a stock. Keep losses small no matter how long you may have owned a stock. Sell your winning stocks slowly and piecemeal. Sell your losing stocks quickly and completely. Often that is enough to bias your account in a winning direction!

THE WOMAN INDIA BANKS ON

– CHANDA KOCHHAR One of the world’s most powerful women on fate and hard work the cornerstones of her career in the banking world.

Chanda Kochhar, The BlackBerry is in silent mode and the excel sheets are replaced by the Satyanarayan Katha every full moon night

when Chanda

Kochhar is on her way home. The MD & CEO

of India’s largest private bank prefers to use those 40 minutes in the car to read the verse, write Shyamal Majumdar and Somasroy Chakraborty. Not so long ago, she used to read the narrative on Lord Vishnu for half an hour every morning, but as the days got longer at work, she has switched to the fortnightly routine in her “mobile” study. Conventional wisdom has it that the Katha helps ordinary mortals overcome vices such as anger and ego. Kochhar’s perennially calm expression suggests the Lord has been extra kind to her. Mention that and Kochhar breaks into a hearty laugh. “I am religious, but not a ritualistic person. For example, I don’t lose sleep if I can’t go to the temple for more than a month. I also believe strongly in destiny,” she says. That’s understandable, given that destiny played a big role in her choice of career. As a child, she wanted to be an IAS officer, but life turned upside down when her father, who was the Principal of an engineering college in Jaipur, died when she was just 13. Her mother then shifted to Mumbai with her three young children (Kochhar, 49, is the youngest) just to stay in close proximity to her extended family. Among other things, that meant a huge adjustment in lifestyle. “In Jaipur everyone knew everyone; in Mumbai, it takes time for anyone to know anyone,” Kochhar says. In a way, she adds, the sudden loss of her father strengthened her determination to face life’s challenges. “One has to thank God and family for whatever I have

achieved. At the same time, I must say God can help you only when you work hard,” she adds, as the attendant serves fruit juice. Since she’s always on the wing, Kochhar doesn’t have the time to follow the standard “Lunch with BS” format of choosing a restaurant for us to host her. Instead, she’s invited us to the Emerald, the spacious dining room overlooking a carefully manicured garden on the top floor of the imposing 11-storeyed glass façade that serves as ICICI Bank’s headquarters. The lunch – a mix of Punjabi and Chinese dishes – is served in a hurry; no doubt the attendant knows that the boss wants this to be a brisk, working affair. Kochhar is a sparse eater, but judging by the frequency with which the attendant tried to refill our plates, a gracious hostess. The “culture of Mumbai” may have weaned her to a career in the financial sector, but the hard work was visible right away: she was a topper right through — economics graduation from Mumbai’s Jai Hind College to MBA in Finance from Jamnalal Bajaj, where destiny again played a big role in changing her life. It was at Jamnalal that she met Deepak, first her batch mate and then life partner, and a certain gentleman called K V Kamath who came for the campus interview in 1984. ICICI Bank was setting up leasing business and Kochhar remembers every single question Kamath asked. For Kochhar, who is the only banker in her family, the defining moment in her career came when she was asked to head the retail operations after running the corporate business for some time. It was a risky move — corporate loans at that time accounted for around half the balance sheet and an even larger portion of profits. Retail was less than one per cent of the business. But the hard work paid off — over the next six years, she ramped up the retail business to about 67 per cent of the bank’s balance sheet. “If you look at bankers, they either grow to be investment bankers or corporate bankers or retail bankers. So for me to be a corporate as well as retail banker was a great opportunity,” Kochhar says. She also remembers Kamath’s comments quite early in her career. As the head of ICICI’s

Page 26: UTH-N-YNG 35th Issue by JAY-HO

Western Regional Office, she made a brief presentation to Kamath on the changes she has made in the functioning of the office. But Kamath’s question baffled her: “Who did you ask before making the changes?” Kochhar just about mustered enough courage to say, “No one”. Kamath congratulated her for her initiative. That’s something that also impressed N Vaghul, then ICICI chairman. When ICICI set up a commercial bank in 1993, she was only an assistant general manager. But Vaghul chose her to lead a team that would decide everything about the architecture of the bank — an experience she reckons was invaluable. “I was the employee number one in ICICI Bank,” Kochhar says — a satisfaction that prompted her to turn down many lucrative offers from competition. But all this has meant extraordinary hard work and having to live with the “guilt conscience” that every working mother suffers. “There is no past tense to guilt conscience. I have been living with it every single day — even now,” Kochhar says. She, however, has no regrets as ultimately, one has to make a choice in life and work around it. That explains her numerous “day trips” to New York on official work — she takes a late night flight so that she can reach her destination early morning NY time. After a day of back-to-back meetings, she is on the flight back home the same night. That means, though she is away for three days, it’s actually one day because of the time difference. “More than physical strength, one requires mental strength to do this day in day out.” But her “supportive” family has made it worthwhile. Her husband is a businessman, Aarti has finished her engineering and waiting to do her MBA, and Arjun is in Class 10. “I think they are proud of me,” she adds.

That must be a huge understatement going by her achievements in steering ICICI Bank through one of its most difficult periods soon after taking over

as Kamath’s successor in May 2009. After her appointment as MD & CEO was officially announced in December 2008 (the board had informed her two months earlier), there was a series of high-profile exits. But under her, the bank didn’t mind speaking a new idiom of “no growth.” That turnaround story has been well chronicled, but what has not been spoken about much is the tremendous effort the occupant of the corner office had to put in to bring everybody on the same page. The dessert arrives – fresh fruit and a chocolate mousse cake – but Kochhar prefers tea, and talks about the unspoken challenges. “It was an apparent contradiction. Our public stance was no growth. But internally, we had to grow dramatically. We were growing current account savings account (CASA) deposits (from 26 per cent to 41 per cent) and increasing our branch network. Similarly, we had to work very hard to reduce unsecured loans and grow secured loans. Still, at the end of the year, you had to publish a report card that said no growth in loans,” she says, adding the biggest challenge was to convince each one of her junior colleagues that this was necessary to set the foundation for a long-term profitable growth. Two years and many battles later, Kochhar reels out numbers to prove her point. Apart from CASA, unsecured loans as a percentage of total loans have come down from around 11 per cent in mid-2008 to less than three per cent. The net NPA ratio has come down from around two per cent to 0.9 per cent. Provisioning costs have come down from 2.2 per cent annually to 80 basis points every year. The number of branches has grown from 1,300 to 2,500 and still the bank’s cost to asset ratio is about 1.7 per cent. Finally, return on asset, which was less than 0.9, has crossed 1.3. There was no surprise, therefore, when Bloomberg last week named her one of the 50 most influential in global finance and when Forbes listed her as one of the world’s most powerful women.Although all this leaves little time to do anything else, Kochhar says she still finds time to watch the latest Hindi masala movies with family on weekends. “That’s a great stress-buster for all four of us who are super busy otherwise,” Kochhar says, as she sees us off till the lift.

MOVIE REVIEW – YEH

JAWANI HAI DEEWANI Opposites attract! He's charismatic, gregarious and passionate with an indomitable spirit to explore places. She's the archetypical seedhi-saadhi girl, Plain Jane actually, an academician who's focused on attaining what she's zeroed for herself as a career. Add two more characters who cross their paths in this beautiful journey called life. Now place these four straight-out-of-life characters in a bottle, shake with a swizzle stick and presto, a love story is ready to be served.

Come to think of it, Ayan Mukerji's second outing YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI is akin to his accomplished directorial debut WAKE UP SID. Yet diverse! The characters in both, WAKE UP SID and YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI, undergo a metamorphosis and transform into mature individuals with the passage of time. Life is a great teacher after all. At the same time, YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI is dissimilar from films of its ilk -- and conventional love stories too -- because Ayan's characters never embark upon the run of the mill, mundane route to express feelings towards each other. Like all rom-coms, YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI sparkles with romance, merriment and heartache, is brightly glossy and boasts of crackling chemistry between its lead actors, but Ayan makes sure the heady concoction never waters down. The best part is, he never borrows from romantic cliches that most love stories depend upon and that, in my opinion, is this film's biggest strength. Expect no unwanted melodrama, no unwelcome characters, no earsplitting background music to accentuate the proceedings... the best thing about YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI is that it's refreshingly unique within the conventional Hindi film format.

YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI narrates the story of four characters -- Bunny [Ranbir Kapoor], Naina [Deepika Padukone], Aditi [Kalki Koechlin] and Avi [Aditya Roy Kapur] -- as they navigate through their youth... from their carefree laughter as they set off on a holiday together in their colleges days, until their bittersweet tears as they watch the first of their bunch get married.

Ayan exhibits immense growth as a raconteur. His understanding of life, the characters, the road blocks they encounter, the resolution... radiates tremendous maturity. He nurtures his characters well, garnishing the narrative with episodes that have a lot of heart and which capture the energy and silence astoundingly. The message that Ayan attempts to convey is wonderfully real: There's more to life than conquering peaks and achieving targets. Sharing the precious

moments with your loved one is what matters eventually. Although the film is targeted at youth, the film speaks a universal language and holds appeal for people of all age-groups.

Although the narrative congregates vigor, melodrama and gloss dexterously, the only time it totters is when the pacing slows intermittently. Besides, the narrative is stretched towards the middle of the second half. Nevertheless, notwithstanding the trivial blemish, the writing manages to hit the high notes for most parts of the enterprise. Also, it never goes overboard with the drama. The strings tie up really well towards the resolution and the conclusion is sure to leave you buoyant, grinning from ear to ear.

YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI is embellished with a youthful and crazy score, with Pritam belting out popular, energetic numbers. 'Badtameez Dil', 'Balam Pichkari' and 'Ghagra' are high-on-energy tracks that have already hit the popularity charts. 'Kabira' oozes melody and has rich lyrical value. The choreography of 'Badtameez Dil' in particular is super, with Ranbir gyrating to the tunes with delight. Madhuri's presence in the 'Ghagra' track adds credence too.

V. Manikandan's cinematography is pure art in motion. Every frame is simply spectacular, with the DoP capturing the varied colors and landscapes with brilliance. Dialogue [Hussain Dalal] are unusual, but fascinating and have a lot of clever hilarity entwined in them. The writing is enhanced by the performances! Ranbir is the show-stopper, the film's major muscle, the jewel in the crown, no two opinions on that. He is pitch-perfect, managing to be maddening, exasperating, childish and endearing in a flash. He captivates you with his gaze, his tone of voice, his chuckle and those itsy-bitsy gestures that make Bunny so so so lovable. Post COCKTAIL, Deepika nails her part yet again. The actress makes her character distinctive, blending grit, courage, compassion, sensuality and buoyancy with flourish.

Aditya continues to climb the ladder. Post AASHIQUI 2, here's yet another act that gives ample evidence of his fine talent. Kalki infuses poise in her part, holding her own despite the film clearly belonging to Ranbir and Deepika. Farooq Shaikh, as Ranbir's father, is simply outstanding, more so towards the final stages of the film. Kunal Roy Kapur is competent, as always. On the whole, YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI is a revitalizing take on romance and relationships. A wonderful cinematic experience, this one should strike a chord with not just the youth, but cineastes of all age-groups. Watch this celebration of love and get mesmerized!
