HISTORY

The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech)

dates its beginning from 1958, originally as the

Jamaica Institute of Technology. In 1959 the

name of the institution was changed to the

College of Arts, Science and Technology and it

became incorporated in the College of Arts,

Science and Technology (CAST) Scheme of

1959. This was validated by anACT of Parliament

in 1964. In 1986, the CAST Scheme was revised

in order to make the College a degree-granting

institution, and the College became legally

empowered to conduct affairs under a governing

Council and Academic Board. The institution was

formally accorded University status on September

1, 1995 as the University of Technology, Jamaica.The University of Technology, Jamaica Act 27-

1999, which makes permanent provisions for the

establishment of the University of Technology,

Jamaica was approved by Parliament on June 8,

1999 and signed into law by the Governor

General on June 19, 1999.

The history of the institution is intimately

connected with the social and economic

development of Jamaica. From just over 50

students and four programmes in 1958, UTech

has grown to become Jamaicas premier nationalinstitution with a student population of over

12,000. It now offers more than 90 programmes

at the certificate, diploma and degree levels

through its five faculties and three colleges.

The University has further expanded access to its

programme offerings to meet the demands of

business and industry by establishing campuses

and satellite locations across Jamaica. In

addition, several programmes are franchised

through links with community colleges, and mostprogrammes are linked to national and

international professional organisations.

Syllabuses are modeled on the English

polytechnic system, with emphasis on flexibility of

approach work-based learning and professional

linkages afforded through co-operative workbased programmes. Flexibility in the Universitys

academic programmes is reflected in the various

modes of course delivery, which include the

establishment of a Semesterised mode of

delivery introduced in academic year 1999/2000

and further adjusted and piloted in 2009-2010.

Under the System, the academic year was

restructured into three academic sessions and all

courses of study modularized. Several credit and

non credit courses are offered during the Summer

Session from mid-May to August.

UNDERGRADUATE

All applicants are encouraged to apply earlyfor prior ity consideration. There are twooptions when applying for admission, EarlyBird option and Regular option. Lateapplications are only considered if there isspace in the programme.

The Early Bird option is recommendedprimari ly for highly qualified applicants,summer applicants and internationalapplicants who would like an early decisionon their application. Any applicant mayapply during this period. Applications

submitted during this period will beconsidered for admission and given an earlydecision. An early bird applicant is one whohas submitted an application along withsupporting documentation by the stipulateddeadline.

The Regular option is the standardapplication option.

6. Complete all four (4) sections and submit

your application on-line.

7. Print application confirmation page.

8. Submit confirmation page and supportingdocuments (see other admissionsinformation on page 2) to the Office of

Admissions & Enrolment Managementwithin ten working days of completion of theapplication on-line but no later thanJanuary 29 whichever is earlier;

An applicant will be considered for a course of study if s/e meetste normal matriculation requirements and is at least 17 years ofae by December of te year of admission.

Applicants wit Associate Derees and Diplomas accredited by teUniversity Council of Jamaica (UCJ) or by any oter internationally

reconized accreditin body may articulate into courses of studyoffered by te University of Tecnoloy, Jamaica.

Students admitted to te University of Tecnoloy, Jamaica will berequired to do a Proficiency Test in Enlis. Students wo fail teProficiency Test will be required to do a non-credit bearinDevelopmental module, wic tey must pass before bein allowedto take te University level Communication modules.

Persons Exempt from the English Language Proficiency TestIf you ave a Grade 1 pass in CSEC Enlis A or an A in GCEEnlis; Grades 1 and 2 in CAPE Communication Studies or avesuccessfully completed an underraduate deree from a reconizeduniversity, a Diploma from a Teacers Collee or an Associatederee from a reconized tertiary institution, you do not need to sitte test. If you ave successfully completed te 1st yearcommunication modules at a Community Collee /Franciseassociated wit UTec or ave previously done Fundamentals of

Communication, Oral Communication or Communication 3 atUTec, you are also exempt.

Te University currently provides 503 bed spaces in seven residentialfacilities. Tere is one co-ed facility, namely te Dennis Jonson Hall ofResidence; sinle occupancy is not offered on any of te Halls.

Tere are two male Halls, namely Farquarson Hall, a triple occupancyfacility, and Hall F, offerin only double occupancy. Garvey Hall, Halls A,

B, and E are female residence. Double occupancy is offered only on HallsA, B, and E; Garvey Hall is a triple occupancy facility. Te Dennis JonsonHall of residence is a specialized facility used to ouse student atletesincludin te MVP club. Tis facility is co-ed and ouses up to six personsper room.

Eac all is equipped wit all te basic amenities for your comfort, and isprotected by an electronic security system. Accessibility is attained troute use of an electronic access card. Several developmental prorammesand activities are desined for your olistic development, and enjoyment.

Boardin fees are paid per semester; owever, full payment can be madeat te start of te academic year. Fees are paid prior to te start of eacsemester; te payment dates are communicated, and are in accordancewit te payment scedule deposit by te University. Accepted applicantsare required to pay a non-refundable Boardin Commitment Fee (BCF),wic is a percentae of te total boardin fee.

For students interested in livin on all, te application period is October1 to January 31. Students may complete tis process on line, byaccessin our website at www.utecjamaica.edu.jm. Click on prospectivestudents, and ten online services. Te completed application form must

All fees are cared on a per credit basis, and te cost per creditdiffers in eac Scool/Department. Tuition fee is estimated basedon te modules selected and te cost per credit of teScool/Department were te module is delivered. Te final costmay vary based on a students selection.

Tuition Fees for te Academic year 2016/2017 will not be availableuntil May 2016. In te interim, te existin cost per credit quoted inbooklet can form te basis for projectin te upcomin fees byaddin an additional 10% increase on te existin per credit rates.

Applicants offered admission to te University may request adeferral of teir reistration for a period of one academic year.

Requests for deferral sould be done in writin to te University
