2013 Utah Science Olympiad Forestry Event There will be 20 stations in this competition, each with two questions to be answered: identify the sample at the station and answer an additional question about the sample or a general question about trees or forests. Make sure the station number you are at corresponds to the answer line on your quiz sheet. Participants are allowed to have two field guides with them, a copy of this tree list, and a double sided sheet of notes. Participants will have two minutes at each station to answer the two questions. They then will go to the next station and repeat the process. At the end of the 40 minutes participants may go back to stations where they need more time until the event ends. Tree List The tree list for the Utah 2013 Science Olympiad is below. It contains 72 species. You will be expected to identify 20 of them by examining samples or other materials. Organization and classification roughly correspond to the “Audubon Field Guides of North American Trees”. Most trees are in one of those guides but some are not. Look also in “A Guide to the Trees of Utah and the Intermountain West” by Michael Kuhns from USU Press. Participants are expected to know scientific names (genus and species) and common names for the event as they are shown below, but not family names. Spelling and capitalization errors will be deducted-for as well as punctuation (hyphens). If a common name includes “or” then either common name is acceptable.
