Old Business:
Mary reported that our application for $2,000 grant request to Wal-Mart Community rewards
program had not been selected to receive funding at this time.
New Business:
Charlie, N8KZN asked for a show of hands on approving membership for Adam Peters, KD8VHS.
All were in favor.
Mary passed a copy of the application with the information about ham radio on the back. This was
a suggestion at our last meeting and we need to get some copies made so we can have a supply at
Universal. Minuteman will do on the heavier paper, two sided, 250 copies for $50. Ray, W8FLX
made motion to spend $50 for copies and seconded by Ralph, W8BVH. All in favor.
Rob, KD8DXC made a motion to authorize John, W8OF up to $600 for 500 ft. of LMR400 coax
cable, PL259’s connectors, and lightning arrestors to be installed on the antennas on waterworks hill,
seconded by Ray, W8FLX. All in favor.
Ralph, W8BVH made motion to spend $64.75 for t-connectors, jumpers, tape and other items
needed for antenna repairs, seconded by Rob, KD8DXC. All in favor.
Steve, KD8JLA mentioned that there should be an article appearing in the local newspaper, which
has been prepared by Donna Stalter, FMC Marketing Dept. dealing with the tri-county group and the
role of how our amateur club fits in. Steve also said that she would be contacting ARRL about
submitting an article. Donna is also a ham.
Charlie will take care of broken window in basement.
Rob, KD8DXC asked if he was still a member since he noticed that his name was not on the
membership posted on website. He sent the check last October for his membership and never received
anything saying that he was no longer a member. When he went to see the status of the check, it had
never been cashed. It was agreed all he had to do was pay his current dues and he would be a member.
Rob felt that members should be contacted when they do not renew their membership, which would
correct this issue.
Gary, W8GTS asked about the e mail from Brent, KD8MGR regarding William, KD8RNQ.
William’s hat was knocked off by a person behind him during pledge of allegiance at a previous
meeting. Just wearing a veteran ball hat does not constitute a uniform so all hats should be removed
during a pledge of allegiance to the flag. Regarding radio night, John, W8OF agreed to call and invite
him to the clubhouse again and take him upstairs and show him how to use the radios which are
available for all licensed members to use.
Ray, W8FLX made a motion to adjourn. Meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m. \
Respectfully submitted,
Mary Travis, KD8EEI
Secretary

Tip of the Week
Learn something by working special event stations.
One of the things I enjoy most is working special event
stations. Not only do they often offer interesting QSL
cards or certificates, you'll undoubtedly learn something
by working them. For example, today I worked three
special event stations down at WA2HOM this afternoon.
One of the was W2RC, which was operating from the
RCA Radio Central facility in Rocky Point, NY, shown in
the photo at right. I learned that RCA officially began operations at that
facility on November 5, 1921, and, at the time, it was the largest transmitter
facility in the world. I also worked W0I, which was commemorating the
sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
The ARRL website has a page devoted to special event stations. I visit it
nearly every week to find special event stations that I would be interested in
working. To get your special event station listed there, fill out the Special
Event Listing Form.

Lancaster & Fairfield County ARC is announcing that their 6 meter repeater is in full operation: Input is 52.09Mhz
Output is 53.09mhz
Gary Snider, W8GTS, shares a few
pictures of his latest ham radio
project. Gary acquired a 100’
commercial tower and had it
brought to his home in Hocking
County. This tower is solid steel
and as you can see in the pictures,
is bolted together at the three pads
per 20’ section. Even though not
all of us can have this type of a antenna system, it is surely
interesting to see what can be done.
Note: Even though Gary and Sandy live on a high hill in Hocking County, their home sits below the road level. This tower should help him with reception. Thanks for the photo’s Gary.
Nancy and I spent Thursday, September 19 aboard the
Queen Mary. The Queen is docked in Longbeach, CA and
is being used as a tourist attraction and a Hotel. We
planned this stop as the last one of our West coastline
adventure. Not long after we got into our stateroom I told
Nancy I was going to find the ship's wireless room
because they have a Ham station setup. We went up to the
Sport Deck, the topmost deck on the ship to the radio
room. After I introduced myself and showed them a copy of my license they invited me
in. There were 3 ham volunteers manning the station. There were 3 complete operating
stations and I said I wanted to operate CW so they set me down at one with a Bencher
paddle and put me on 7mc. The band was dead so we went to 14mc, still no luck. I had
CQed several times and after switching to 21mhz gave up. They arranged to set me up
to contact the ship's station using a local rig so that I would qualify for a QSL. We
chatted awhile and when I answered their question about how many years I had been a
ham and still a General class operator they insisted that I add a qualifier in the log. It
read " the oldest active General class Ham operator". I have no idea if this is true but
what hell I went along. W6RO is the station call and is staffed by the local radio club.
The antenna system is great, a multi band Yagi, a multi band vertical with 10 radials, a
couple wire antennas and a 2 meter vertical dipole. Nancy took a photo of me at the key
which is attached. 73. Ray W8FLX NOTE: This article was left out of the last months newsletter due to vacation. Sorry for the delay and
thank you Ray for sharing your ham experience.
