Well, thats all I have for now.

Keep On Trucking Gary

Webmaster Don McCrary

I ’ m t a k i n g a m o m e n t t o passionately look back to the time of my service of nineteen years old, seems so long ago but yesterday.

Stationed at MCAS Beaufort S.C., the days were southernly laid back, town was pretty much like any small town USA, except for the noise of the aircraft when taking off and landing and the sound of the pump on my refueler as I was refueling the jets as each arrived.

The walk from the barracks to the motor pool, I couldn’t afford a used car at the time nor the insurance. That changed during my time there and I began to drive around areas located near the base and eventually sprouting my wings and started “swooping” with Bob Welling, my lifetime Marine buddy. We are still in contact to this day.

S o m a n y g r e a t t i m e s a n d memories that have been fixed in place.

T h e r e a s o n I m e n t i o n t h e memories and experiences is that a young Marine has died recently and was doing the same things I did at the same age, 19. Minding his business and hit head on, from another driver evading police and was traveling the wrong way into this Marines lane of travel

As I read the article, I instantly looked back. I felt the loss of this young Marine and the potential that laid ahead of him.

H e w a s s t a t i o n e d a t 1 s t Transportation Support Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 1, Camp Pendelton, CA.

The Marine Corps instilled many aspects of my life, love for a fellow Marine is one of the greatest I ever received.

Semper Fidelis, Lance Cpl. Matthew Adams, 19, from Orem, Utah,

God’s speed.

3rd Marine Aircraft Wing What it Takes to Move a Mountain: The Regimental Air Assault 18 DEC 2019 | Cpl. Levi Guerra 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing

Dec 16, 2019 EL CENTRO, CA - Four U.S. Marine Corps CH-53E Super Stallions with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron (HMH) 361, Marine Aircraft Group (MAG) 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (MAW), take off from a forward arming and refueling point during exercise Steel Knight at the Chocolate Mountain Aerial Gunnery Range in El Centro, Calif., Dec. 10, 2019. Steel Knight is an annual exercise that integrates 3rd MAW’s combat power and capabilities with those of 1st Marine Division. This exercise provides the Marines and sailors of 3rd MAW with realistic and relevant training and enhances their skills, tactics and combat readiness. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Julian Elliott-Drouin)

Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif -- In a magnificent display of combat power, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (MAW) demonstrated its ability to lift a regiment of Marines and their equipment over long distances in a very short period of time in Southern California, Dec. 10, 2019.

Muddy and exhausted with dark clouds looming, the Marines trekked across a rain-soaked field, their footprints embedding into the mud with every weighted step. They marched toward the distant sound of rotor blades. U.S. Marine Corps CH-53E Super Stallions and MV-22B Ospreys with 3rd MAW waited on the horizon, ready to fulfill their role and extract the warriors following a training event that began with inserting Marines f r o m 1 s t M a r i n e D i v i s i o n . Overhead, two UH-1Y Venoms secured an unseen 3-dimensional perimeter, ready to provide support if needed. This is what a regimental air assault looks like.

“The regimental air assault is part of Steel Knight 20, which is a 1st M a r i n e D i v i s i o n e x e r c i s e , ” explained U.S. Marine Corps Col. Wi l l iam J . Barto lomea, the commanding officer of Marine Aircraft Group (MAG) 39, 3rd MAW. “But of course, as Marines and as Marine Pilots, we are always supporting our brothers and sisters

on the ground. We’re involved because the Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) is better when all of its elements are put together.”

The regimental air assault used a variety of 3rd MAW Marines and machines and integrated each of their capabilities into an adaptable aviation maneuver, all working in support of the ground combat element.

“I think more than anything else, it provides versatility and flexibility,” said Bartolomea. “The air assault portion provides the ground element the ability to maneuver in three dimensions and bypass enemy strong points to get at enemy weak points. The flexibility and the range of fire power that 3rd MAW and MAG 39 bring in support of 1st Marine Division is critical to make sure they can achieve their objectives.” The regimental air assault is one of the many exercises 3rd MAW performs in order to provide realistic and relevant training in support of ground operations.

“Training like this is vital to individual and unit readiness,” said Capt. Valerie Smith, a pilot with M a r i n e H e a v y H e l i c o p t e r Squadron (HMH) 465, MAG-16. “Integrating aviation in the same manner that it would be used in a

MAGTF gives the Marines the training they need to remain aggressive, prepared and focused on operational excellence.” This tactic of combining the full power of the Marine Corps’ assets through maneuver warfare focuses on putting the enemy in a lose-lose scenario. “At the end of the day,” said Bartolomea, “this combined effort puts our enemies in a dilemma that gets our ground combat element to the objective they need, giving us a lethal edge on the battle field.” The Super Stallions and Ospreys lifted off from the rain-soaked field, their precise and graceful movements a visible testament to the rigorous training required of aircrews. The Marines, loaded in the fuselage, looked back on the landing zone as gusts from the rotors blew away all traces of them ever being there save for the muddied footprints they left behind as a reminder of their presence and the lethal capabilities of the force that moved them. Air assaults of this magnitude are and will continue to be a vital part of the 3rd MAW’s preparation as they train and focus on naval integration and ship-to-shore transport, connecting the naval force and i ts warriors. The regimental air assault is but one example of how 3rd MAW supports the Navy-Marine Corps warfighting team.

M A R I N E C O R P S B A S E QUANTICO, Va. —

The Marine Corps’ Utility Task Vehicles are undergoing several upgrades designed to improve the safety and performance of the vehicle.

Using critical feedback from Marines and taking inspiration spanning the automotive industry to desert racing, engineers and logisticians from the Light Tactical Vehicle program office at Program Executive Officer Land Systems have been working diligently to research, test , procure and implement changes to the UTV. These changes include high clearance control arms, new run-flat tires, floorboard protection, a r o a d m a r c h k i t , a c l u t c h i m p r o v e m e n t k i t a n d a n environmental protection cover.

“We bought the vehicle as a [ c o m m e r c i a l - o f f - t h e - s h e l f ] solution, so it’s not going to have

everything we want right from the factory,” said Jason Engstrom, lead systems engineer for the UTV at PEO Land Systems.

Since PEO Land Systems started fielding the UTV in 2017, Marines have consistently pushed the limits of their vehicles, said Engstrom, in many ways beyond what is expected or imagined with a typical off-the-shelf solution.

“Even though we’re in the operations, maintenance and sustainment phases with the vehicle, it ’s such a new vehicle and we’re seeing Marines constantly push the limits of the truck. Every day we’re seeing Marines come up with new ideas on how to use the truck.” Jason Engstrom, lead systems engineer for the UTV at PEO Land Systems.

High Clearance Control Arms

The first of these upgrades involves installing high clearance control arms on the vehicle—a crucial component of the vehicle’s suspension system.

“With the different types of terrain Marines cover in these vehicles, we noticed the [original] control arms were frequently getting bent,” said Engstrom. “Rocks were probably the biggest hazard, and that’s primarily where the Marines were driving.”

A bent or damaged control arm can disable a vehicle, said UTV logistician Rodney Smith. To address this issue, the team looked to industry and ultimately s e t t l e d o n a c o n t r o l a r m comprised of material about twice as strong as the original control arms and that provided an extra 2.5 inches of clearance.

With this upgrade, Marines are better equipped to drive off the beaten path while minimizing their risk of damaging the control arms on their vehicles.

Clutch Improvement Kit

The UTV team is also outfitting t h e v e h i c l e w i t h a c l u t c h improvement kit. The UTV’s clutch is an important component of the vehicle’s transmission system, which is essential in making the vehicle run.

“One of the things that came right from the factory was a belt-driven [transmission] system,” said Engstrom. “Just like with the control arms, a broken belt takes the whole vehicle out of action.”

T h e u p g r a d e d c l u t c h k i t reconfigures the clutch system, enabling it to better engage the belt to keep it from breaking, said Engstrom.

Floorboard Protection

T h e t e a m h a s a l s o b e g a n u p g r a d i n g t h e v e h i c l e ’ s f l o o r b o a r d , w h i c h s h o w e d evidence of damage after a recent deployment.

“When Marines deployed the vehicles to Australia, they found that high-density sticks and branches on the ground have the potential to pop up and puncture the plastic floorboard, which is a safety hazard,” said Engstrom. Upon receiving this feedback from M a r i n e s , t h e U T V t e a m researched and tested various potential materials to use in protecting the floorboard.

“We wanted to find a solution that kept the weight down because putting too much weight in the design of the vehicle—like a reinforced floorboard—impacts the amount of cargo Marines can

carry on it,” said Smith. “Every pound counts.”

Tires

For the UTV’s tire upgrades, the team turned to a novel source for inspiration: the Baja off-road racing industry.

“There’s a new approach to run-flat technology—called ‘Tireballs’,” said Engstrom. “Inside each tire are 16 inflatable cells, so if any one cell pops from running over a spike or nail, you’d still have 15 other cells full of air to continue driving on.”

This, said Engstrom, significantly enhances the UTV’s operational readiness for Marines, allowing them to go farther for longer in the UTV. Along with the Tireballs, the team selected an upgraded tire from BF Goodrich that is more durable than the previous, e x c e e d i n g p e r f o r m a n c e r e q u i r e m e n t s i n v a r i o u s environments that mimic the challenging terrains Marines face.

“The Baja racers are using these tires now while completing 1000-mile races out in the desert,” said Engstrom. “We decided it would be a good upgrade for Marines.”

Environmental Protection Cover

The Environmental Protection Cover, another upgrade to the UTV, provides Marines with protection from the elements while they’re out in the field.

“ H a v e y o u e v e r b e e n i n a convertible on a hot, sunny day and put the roof up? That’s exactly what this is,” said UTV engineer Christopher Swift. “It’s necessary after being out in the field 8-12 hours a day in the hot sun, especially if it’s the only shelter available.”

Road March Kit

The team started fielding the U T V ’ s R o a d M a r c h K i t —comprising turn signals, a horn, and a rearview mirror—last March. Marines from III Marine Expeditionary Force requested these features be added for safety, especially when transitioning between training areas on roads also used by civilian motorists.

The Road March Kit upgrade, along with the other vehicle u p g r a d e s , u n d e r s c o r e s t h e i m p o r t a n c e M a r i n e s ’ u s e r feedback is to the acquisition p r o f e s s i o n a l s t a s k e d w i t h d e l i v e r i n g p r o d u c t s t o t h e warfighter.

“We try to meet customer needs w i t h i n t h e r e q u i r e m e n t [determined by Marine Corps C o m b a t D e v e l o p m e n t a n d Integration],” said UTV Team Lead Lorrie Owens. “If we can meet the customers’ need to make it more reliable and durable, we will certainly do so within the realm of the requirement.”

The UTV team is taking advantage o f t h e v e h i c l e ’ s g e n e r a l m a i n t e n a n c e s c h e d u l e t o implement the upgrades, which will be done alongside regular maintenance and services.

CAMP LEJEUNE, NC -- U.S. Marines with 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, took on a challenge as the first unit to navigate the newly-opened Leadership Reaction Course on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Jan. 7, 2020.

More than 60 Marines with 2nd AA Bn maneuvered through four different obstacles, some leading the path to victory and other to defeat.

“Marines gain a lot from this t r a i n i n g a n d m o s t importantly they gain the ability to think in a time c o n s t r a i n e d , s t r e s s f u l situation. There are frictions that are thrown at them, h a v i n g t o t h i n k u n d e r pressure, giving them the ability to problem solve on the move.” Staff Sgt. Donald McBee Jr., the mine countermeasure platoon sergeant with 2nd AA Bn.

The Marines divided into 12 teams of five, rotating through the different obstacles, each requiring critical thinking and problem solving skills to maneuver. Each station consists of its own rules and objectives: red surfaces couldn’t be touched, only the materials provided could be used and all Marines have to make it through the obstacle safely. The team also had to complete each station in less than 15 minutes.

At each obstacle, a new Marine was given an opportunity to lead by becoming the fire team leader for the group. That Marine’s responsibility was to form a plan, and organize and direct the Marines on hand to solve the obstacle in the time allotted. The o b j e c t i v e o f M a r i n e C o r p s leadership is to develop the leadership qualities of Marines to e n a b l e t h e m t o a s s u m e p r o g r e s s i v e l y g r e a t e r responsibilities. Regardless of

rank, every Marine must be prepared to lead.

“I gained a lot of experience about critical thinking that I wouldn’t usually get from my day to day work,” said Cpl. Arthur Lesso, a metal worker with 2nd AA Bn. “I most definitely would do it again. It helps leaders and people who wouldn’t be leaders to flex that muscle and just figure out a problem that doesn’t have an easy solution.”

According to McBee, 2nd AA Bn participated in the LRC as their Back in the Saddle training to start 2020 off right. The goal of BITS is to refocus Marines after the holiday and prepare them for the year ahead.

“The LRC is absolutely great training, and I am glad they brought it back,” McBee said. “I guarantee that we will be coming back to do follow-on training here.”

Almighty Father, whose command is over all and whose love never fails, make me aware of Thy presence and obedient to Thy will. Keep me true to my best self, guarding me against dishonesty in purpose and deed and helping me to live so that I can face my fellow Marines, my loved ones and Thee without shame or fear. Protect my family. Give me the will to do the work of a Marine and to accept my share of responsibilities with vigor and enthusiasm. Grant me the courage to be proficient in my daily performance. Keep me loyal and faithful to my superiors and to the duties of my country and the Marine Corps have entrusted me to. Make me considerate of those committed to my leadership. Help me to wear my uniform with dignity, and let it remind me daily of the traditions which I must uphold.

If I am inclined to doubt, steady my faith, if I am tempted, make me strong to resist: if I should miss the mark, give me the courage to try again.

Guide me with the light of truth and grant me wisdom by which I may understand the answers to my prayer.

Without fuss or bother, you have done your part. We hope you will give with a willing heart.

This is the end of our little tale, wishing success for our Bakeless Bake Sale.

April has been designated as our Bakeless Bake Sale month. This is a fundraiser for the Barrie O. Delp Scholarship Fund. In the month of April we would like for all who can, to donate a little something. All

tions are greatly appreciated for the worthy caudona se.

Thank you.
