• Imperfect indicates something that used to be done.– I used to play the clarinette.– She used to suck her thumb.– We used to do our homework regularly.

• It also can indicate something that was going on when something else happened.– I was washing my hair when you called.

How do you form the imperfect?

1. Determine the subject.2. Conjugate the verb in present for

the « nous » form, no matter what the subject chosen.

3. Drop the « ons » ending.4. Add the imperfect ending that

corresponds to the subject chosen.
